just read that article from new york magazine, "Everyone Is Cheating Their Way Through College - ChatGPT has unraveled the entire academic project."
didn't reveal anything new to me about the use and functioning of the plagiarism-grown, glorified auto-predict, language models that were rolled out so irresponsibly it means now anyone can waste water instead of their own time and effort. but was still fascinating to read, in a bleak way.
it's so interesting because cheating and corner cutting will always exist in education, whether out of desperation or laziness, it will always be there. but by university it truly is wild how many people are not actually there to learn, because at that point if you have a program do all your work for you you are fully not there to learn so why waste your time and money playing pretend at a degree. a degree you aren't qualified for because you did not do enough.
we aren't in a post-capitalist universal basic income world where the idea of a few individuals lightly supervising automation is feasible. the technology is not there and the culture and economic stability is not there. so when a professor in the article reasons to students “you’re not actually anything different than a human assistant to an artificial-intelligence engine, and that makes you very easily replaceable. Why would anyone keep you around?” that is not hypothetical. and in terms of the degrees just because the on paper grade says you passed doesn't mean you passed it means you curated automated responses that pass with no actual guarantee of comprehension or retention of information on your part.
and there are tools and templates and minor automations that can be used to supplement your own efforts! they take longer but not that significantly, and more importantly they are less likely to impede the actual practice of learning to implementation.
that's what a lot of people who cheat or use these tools in this way seem to miss.
let me pull out three paraphrased statements of possible justifications from this article:

these are all experientially true to my experience of education at various points. and the first point exacerbates issues with 2 and 3 to where students can feel overwhelmed or underprepared or frustrated for various reasons. however where i differ personally from the choice making of these students, is that while i never had access to such a powerful tool i still never chose to cheat or cut corners with things like chapter summaries instead of reading a book, or getting someone else to write for me, or any other obvious forms of cheating/plagiarism.
and the reason for this is not lack of frustration or feelings of antagonism towards the system or confusion over content or lack of organisation skills (all issues i had). it's that throughout my education, i am talking back to primary school, i always tried to figure out WHY we were doing the work assigned to us. what in our studies is it trying to get us to engage with, what methods does it force us to put into use to communicate that knowledge, and how much of the information have we comprehended and retained. some assignments are bad at the execution of these goals but if you can see what the goals are you can still benefit from attempting to achieve them while meeting the requirements enough to pass. IMPORTANTLY the process of doing this frustrating and often inefficient process helps not just critical thinking skills but also is how you actually learn things.
no one else can know stuff for you. it makes sense to outsource a basic sum to a calculator app on your phone, but this means you are not a mathematician. if you use a chapter by chapter summary to write a book report you have not read that book. if you read the wikipedia article for a movie you have not watched that movie. all of these are more verifiable sources of information than language models.
if you get a transcript of a lecture you did not attend and use a chatbot to make notes for you then you did not attend that class- if you read the transcript and take notes and then use the chatbot and compare the difference at least then you used your capacity for thought to process the information and assess it through comparison.... but it would be better to find a classmate and compare notes with a peer so you both have the opportunity to not only check how well you understood the lecture/refresh the information covered, but also a much lower stakes chance to try out communication skills than the group assignments and oral presentations often assigned for this purpose. and on top of that you get to socialise and network with someone in your field of study in a way that benefits both of you.
i'm not even against the use of machine learning models generally, i think they are useful in a repetitive task automation and data scanning context. but why are we delegating things like Knowing Stuff and Human Connection to the 1 and 0 machine that might as easily sell our info as have it leaked to hackers. what kind of cyberpunk surveillance dystopia are we shrugging lazily into? you do not have to pay all that money to pretend to be a competent professional. and if that sounds harsh it's because it is. there are enough scammers and barely qualified people succeeding in this world.
you do not have to dedicate your life to labours that you are not capable of, at the very least be honest with yourself of your own capacity for thought and action. genuinely try to figure out if you are using this technology because of a 'can't' or a 'won't'
it's not a tool if it knows more than you- it's a tool if you could do the job without it.

I don't think "people will literally retain zero information" - but already, a lot of them are certainly not retaining enough of it to learn effectively, and it's not far-fetched to assume that the ubiquity of A.I will worsen that problem ("why bother to memorize anything, when I can just ask ChatGPT whenever I need to?"). Studies show that many people have huge problems with reading comprehension, and part of this is due to limited vocabulary - people don't have enough material knowledge to make sense of technical terms, and if you have to look up every second word of a text, most people are already exhausted before they get to the critical thinking part. What a lot of these people do instead is give up in the first place ("I don't like reading") or content themselves with what they consider an approximate understanding ("Ah, I get the gist, that will do"), which is however often shallow, as vague as to be unuseable, or plain mistaken. But alas, lots of people don't see the value in learning definitions anymore, because the public discourse on education has been undervaluing memorization for a while now, and the discourse on A.I is obviously intensifying that problem (as demonstrated by the comment I was replying to).
I'm not even that bothered that most people won't learn how to write with A.I. - maybe writing skills really are optional; A.I. prose is servicable enough for most non-creative purposes.
But I really believe there's no critical thinking without reading skills and in order to acquire those, you have to read original sources, not just A.I summaries. Never trust a summary you didn't make yourself! Summarizing a text is already the first step of deeper engagment with the material; if you outsource that to the A.I, you are learning less - you are less likely to retain material knowledge in the long-term, because your engagement with the text was too shallow, and you cannot critically assess the accuracy of the A.I summary because you can't process the original source. By only being spoonfed the key facts (eg. just those bits of the text you need to answer the essay question), you lose a lot of context that could help you connect the new information to the information you have already stored, which is a prerequiste for you actually being able to access that information on future occasions when you might have opportunity to actually apply it to a practical problem. You also lose the opportunity to practice your analytical skills - being able to summarize something requires to identify the key building blocks of an argument and how they are linked.
Of course this problem is not entirely new. People were always tempted to take short-cuts. In the past, someone not seeing the value in actually doing the reading, taking their own notes and writing their own summaries would just ask to copy the notes from a neighbour or read the Reader's Digest/Spark-Notes version of the text. And the results were probably not great (because you just don't think about the material as much as you would have to, if you did the work yourself) but often good enough to pass. People have not been doing the reading since basically forever and they have been passing exams and getting degrees anyway and then mourned the meaninglessness of degrees. If someone absolutely wants to go through to school without actually learning all that much, there has never been a way to stop them. So in a way, A. I may no be changing all that much indeed.
But people would generally get worse grades with that strategy. Because if you have to do your own writing, a shallow understanding of the material only based on Sparks-Notes/Reader's Digest summaries usually shows - in the structure of the argument, the relevance of evidence chosen to support it, the general cohesivness of the text. Before the widspread use of generative A.I, writing assignments used to be a pretty fair approximation of testing understanding. Now they are basically useless. Because A.I will usually produce a cohesive, well structured argument supported by not completely irrelevant evidence demonstrating understanding of the material that would merit at least a C or even a B if produced by the students themselves. With A.I, you can no longer use writing as a test of understanding.
Hence the move to oral exams. In this setting, it's easy to check that people are not using A.I. when answering question. They can try to anticipate possible questions, have the A.I answer those at home and memorize the answers, but since I do see a value in memorization, that's not nothing after all. And trying to anticipate potential exam questions is actually a useful intellectual exercise.

"Are you kidding?" Ji'Ren stared at her, if she'd just said she wasn't willing to give him a room he'd be fine with that. Him and Delphine didn't exactly end their working relationship on good terms. But pretending to have no rooms available? That was just low. When had she even returned to the inn, anyway? He had thought she was too busy with the Blades to still run this place.
Ji'Ren still had quite a ways to travel to get to where Urag had most recently heard of some ancient and powerful book. He had just hoped to sleep in a bed at some point during the journey.
"I'm not. I have no rooms free at the moment, I'm sorry but you'll have to find someplace else to spend the night." Delphine stated, glaring at him, "Maybe somewhere outside of Riverwood would be best."
"No need for that." A familiar voice was heard approaching, and much to Ji'Ren's surprise, Nazir of all people walked over, "He can stay with me, he's a friend of mine."
"... Your room only has one bed." Delphine stated, "Are you sure about that?"
"He carries a sleeping bag." Nazir stated, "I'm not letting you send him back into the cold."
"... Fine." Delphine seemed less than pleased, but Ji'Ren really didn't care what she thought. He was thankful for the warm place to sleep however, little thanks to her.
"Fantastic! Well, I'll be settling in for the night, Ji'Ren you're free to join me." Ji'Ren didn't care to linger around his old work partner, so he followed Nazir.
Once the door was closed Nazir locked it, then tested it to ensure it was locked correctly.
"What are you..."
"She threatened you." Nazir no longer sounded cheerful, dead serious, eyes locked on Ji'Ren.
"It was hardly a real threat, Delphine is all bark no bite, you do not have to worry for this one... Ji'Ren does appreciate you letting him share the room, however."
"She should learn to keep her bark to herself. Anyone within listening distance could guess what she meant telling you to leave Riverwood." Ji'Ren was... Surprised that comment had Nazir so upset, honestly.
"She lacks the follow through. Or the connections to outsource such a thing." Well... That second part may not be true. But Ji'Ren was sure he could handle anyone she may throw at him, if her words held anything beyond anger. He didn't truly believe she held any real malice towards him. She wasn't one to burn bridges in that way. To his knowledge.
"... For her sake I hope you're right." Nazir stated, but walked over to his bag in the corner, pulling out some sleep clothes.
"Ji'Ren did not expect you to care so much." He couldn't help but be the slightest bit amused by the show of protectiveness.
"What's the deal with you two anyway?" Was that... A hint of a blush? Ji'Ren decided he must be imagining things, and allowed the topic change.
"... Ex work partners, more or less. We parted ways because of a... Difference in viewpoint, and she resents this one for it." Ji'Ren found a nice spot on the floor to roll out his sleeping bag. "It is of no concern to Ji'Ren, she required his assistance far more than he requires hers."
"Unless you need an inn in Riverwood." Nazir mused.
"Unfortunately." He laughed. When he looked up from setting up his sleeping area he was a bit surprised to see Nazir without his turban, in the process of taking off his shirt.
Ji'Ren hadn't expected Nazir to just. Begin changing. Right in the same room as him.
And he was trying his best not to watch but, well, that man was everything you'd expect of an assassin and more... Ji'Ren couldn't help being entranced by the movement of his muscles as he removed the shirt, the way the lighting of the room reflected on his skin, like a piece of art.
A masterpiece Ji'Ren would love to get his hands on-
He shut down those thoughts quick, just as he noticed Nazir glance back towards him, and faced the wall, convincing himself not to sneak a glance to see if Nazir was still in the process of changing.
"I take it you like what you see?" Ji'Ren didn't have to face Nazir to perfectly envision the smirk on his face as he said that.
"This one simply did not expect you to start changing in front of him." It wasn't a lie, fully. Ji'Ren hadn't expected that.
"And you decided to watch the show? How direct."
"This one was not watching!"
"Would you like to?"
"What?!"
"I mean you wouldn't be on the list of people I'd regret letting see me in the nude." Nazir was trying to kill him via embarrassment. He couldn't kill the dragonborn in a head on fight so he was going to fluster him to death. That was surely it. Nazir just wanted to see him lose his composure. "Nothing to say, dragonborn?"
"Ji'Ren is not gracing that with a response."
"What a shame." He heard a chuckle, "I'm dressed, by the way."
He turned and-
"Put a shirt on, Nazir."
"I don't sleep in shirts." Liar. Ji'Ren saw the sleep shirt lying on the bed untouched. He was doing this on purpose.
"Do you delight in seeing this one suffer?" Ji'Ren glared at him, not that seeing Nazir shirtless brought up any feelings close to suffering. Pretending the sight was anything less than entrancing, however? He got up, thinking of leaving the room momentarily, get some fresh air, recollect his thoughts. Gets his thoughts off of how badly he wanted to be far closer to the man in front of him.
"Oh no, I quite enjoy it when you aren't suffering actually. Seeing you squirm however? That I relish in." That gods forsaken grin on his face. Way too at ease for what it did to Ji'Ren's heart rate. "And if all it took to make you of all people lose your nerve was a little exposed skin..." Why was he walking towards him? Ji'Ren backed up without thinking, felt his back connect with the wall, and Nazir, all too gently, placed a hand under Ji'Ren's chin and raised his face so their eyes met. "I'll have to take advantage of that."
Ji'Ren felt practically frozen in place, for the thoughts he was having of closing the distance between them earlier, now that it had actually happened he found himself utterly lacking the confidence to do much more than just stare.
Nazir was attractive, confident, charming, it wasn't as if Ji'Ren hadn't noticed all of that ages ago by now. But it was easy enough to ignore most of the time, it wasn't like he hadn't caught himself watching the assassin, it wasn't as if his love for their sparring matches didn't partly come from the thrill that came with one of them ending up at the other's mercy in a controlled environment, but it was simple and easy to pretend it was all normal and platonic when Nazir didn't notice it.
The gods apparently had ran out of clemency for him however. And this? This was more than Ji'Ren could handle.
"Nothing to say?" He sounded so amused. He was having the time of his life with this. And it was a very sudden very harsh realization that that is all it was.
Nazir did just want to see him squirm.
It likely wasn't meant to be harmful, he was genuinely just trying to catch Ji'Ren off guard, playfully tease him the way he always had, just with a new method.
Nazir didn't care if Ji'Ren saw him change.
Because Ji'Ren was absolutely nothing more than a friend to him, and would not be anything more. He likely didn't actually think Ji'Ren had any feelings for him either, just assumed Ji'Ren didn't know how to handle being called out like this, and had continued from there with absolutely no idea that it was so much more than usual embarrassment causing Ji'Ren to act like he was.
And that really shouldn't hurt so bad but it did.
Thankfully, while Nazir did technically have Ji'Ren backed into a wall, he wasn't truly blocking him from leaving in any way, and Ji'Ren pushed Nazir's hand away, tried to ignore the pain in his chest at the laugh that earned, and rushed past him, struggling for a bit too long with the lock on the door, and ignoring Nazir's confused call after him as he rushed out.
He rushed out the door of the inn and around to the back, letting the cold winter air ground him.
He breathed in deeply, staring at the shrubbery. Maybe he shouldn't have stopped here, he should have made camp somewhere along the way. This was a terrible mistake.
He hoped Nazir didn't look too far into what had happened.
He hoped things could continue to be normal.
He held his face in his hands, leaning against the wall, willing his chest to hurt a bit less. Why was he so hard to ignore?
The distance Ji'Ren had kept between them before the incident with the poison was... Not worth it, but it did make it easier to shake off any inappropriate affections.
But since then? Since Ji'Ren not only almost lost him, but started to genuinely make the effort to know him and be a friend to him?
Nazir did not take attachments lightly, Ji'Ren had noticed. And it was hard not to be flattered when a man who strategically picks who he allowed himself to be close to seemed to care for Ji'Ren as easily as breathing.
But Nazir didn't know Ji'Ren's ever growing, ever annoying, feelings. And that was for the best. He greatly valued Nazir's friendship and was genuinely fine with that being all that was between them. It was just hard to handle being flirted with when he knew it wasn't real.
He took a deep breath, calmer now that he had some space from the situation- from Nazir's hand cupping his chin like that, so delicately almost, so tender of a touch from a man who made his living from murder.
He stayed out there for a few moments more, before making his way back inside, and back to the room, knocking on the door.
"You don't need to knock, Ji'Ren. It's your room too." It actually wasn't. But he let himself in anyway.
When he walked in, Nazir was actually wearing the sleep shirt, much to his relief.
"Ji'Ren is... Sorry. For earlier."
"Don't apologize, I took things too far." Nazir said, "I backed you into a wall."
"... We spar, regularly, Ji'Ren can handle being against a wall near you." You'd expect so, anyway. If he could handle being pinned to the ground by someone, being against a wall with them in front of him should be no issue. Yet somehow Nazir throwing him around was easier to handle than a gentle touch. "This one was just-caught off guard."
"... Okay." Nazir didn't seem convinced, but let the topic drop. "Which way are you heading tomorrow?"
"West."
"Care for some company?"
"You are welcome to join, but do you not have to head back towards Dawnstar?"
"They'll live if I'm gone for a few more days. Besides, you're traveling alone."
Ji'Ren raised an eyebrow, "So?"
"So, you have a knack for finding danger, and as much as I do love death, I don't think I'd be nearly as fond of yours." Nazir's voice had a soft edge to it, "Besides, it's easier to know you're safe when I'm the one ensuring it."
Oh.
That was... Sweet.
This man was going to be the death of him, wasn't he?
