THE BONE WEAVER explores grief, otherness, and reconnection in a second-world fantasy. Toma was raised by undead but is forced to find connections with the living when her sister is stolen by soldiers as a curious specimen. She travels with Mikhail, the displaced Tsar, and Vanya, a commoner with magic.
Because Toma was raised by undead for a large portion of her life, there are a lot of things where her reasoning gets her to a workable solution by a very strange route. Her traveling companions don’t usually try to correct her, as her worldview is so fundamentally different from theirs they might not even know where to begin. In matters of the undead, she eventually gets them more comfortable. In matters of society, war, and prejudice, the tsar and the commoner tend to vehemently disagree while Toma listens to them both and makes up her own mind. Vanya is part of a persecuted minority, his situation made more precarious because he has magic. This would be fine if he were noble, but commoners with magic are thought of as unclean or cursed, somehow fundamentally different than nobles with the same powers.

Kosas Brand Review | The Brand All Over Your Social Media
Kosas Brand Review | The Brand All Over Your Social Media
Every time a new brand launches, I compulsively have to add at least one product to my cart. It’s like an out of body experience, and I can’t recall the order until it arrives on my doorstep. Ok; I’m kidding. But I am someone who wants to try every new beauty brand to come on the scene. My first product from Kosas was their Revealer Concealer. And if you’ve been around for a bit, you’ll know how…

bunny i’ve seen that you answered a few asks about clean makeup or just better makeup that doesn’t have talc and toxic stuff in them. do you have any products that you personally use?
Do you have any idea how long I waited for an ask like this? It’s my chance to preach like Jesus 😭✋ It’s a little long (but organized!) so everything will be below the cut:
There are several brands that come to mind for clean makeup; 100percentpure, kosas, lilah b., rituel de fille, RMS, kjaer weiss, cover fx, glossier, and milk makeup. Although the cost of the products are a bit high, you are actually spending less over time as many of the products can be used multiple ways AND without a brush! Also, you’re not harming your skin thus you don’t need more makeup to cover skin damages in the future!
All of these brands are cruelty-free and vegan and most of them are available at Sephora or Beautylish. Glossier, Rituel De Fille, and 100PercentPure are only available in their respective websites/stores.
I don’t wear mascara, setting powders/setting sprays, and foundation/bb cream so unfortunately, I can’t give you any reviews for long-term use. I am actually currently trying to replace my NARS radiant creamy concealer (which I bought a year ago before I went completely clean and minimal beauty) with a cleaner alternative. Although I only use concealer, I tried out some face products at the stores!
(Also, just a disclaimer, some of these brands have products with silicone (anything that ends with -ithicone in the ingredient list) since it is a vegan ingredient so just beware! It’s safe to use but I have heard that it doesn’t let the skin breathe as much!)
My Experience with Brands:
I tried out the Kosas tinted face oil in 5.5 and 6 and LOVED IT. It looks like skin, has between light to medium coverage, and does not feel greasy or heavy. I also tried the 100PercentPure fruit pigmented healthy foundation in peach bisque and LOVED that because it doesn’t feel heavy and warms up to the skin well. There is better color selection for Kosas than 100PercentPure. They are both around ~$45 which is a steep price so I recommend going with 100PercentPure as a little goes a long way and you can dilute it with moisturizer. You would run out very quickly with Kosas.
I am currently using Milk Makeup’s lip + cheek in perk. It’s a peachy color that looks gorgeous and radiant on the skin. I was a huge fan at the beginning but now, not so much because there is a small bit of coconut oil in the ingredients that is lifting my concealer (also, I recently learned that coconut oil clogs your pores so don’t use it on your face!). It isn’t opaque enough to show up on darker skin tones and it also makes hair stick to your face or lips. Overall, even though the color is pretty and the price is great for the amount you get, it’s a tad bit too greasy.
I have the most experience with Glossier. I own two generation g lipsticks in cake and like and I own boy brow in black. I’ve also tried the cloud paint blush in dusk but only once. All of these products are super wearable, buildable, and doesn’t feel heavy. The only fault is that it’s not great for deeper skin tones. I love the boy brow and the little tube lasted me almost a year now without drying out (still going strong)! I don’t need any other brow product except that one for a natural look which I do almost anytime I wear makeup. The blush is on the sheer side but if you layer twice, it looks seamless with your skin. The same applies to the lipsticks as well! I would say almost all of their products start off sheer and can be layered easily. Would give this brand a solid 8/10.
For liquid liner, I use Kat Von D’s tattoo liner in trooper black. It’s the best liner hand’s down; doesn’t smudge, doesn’t fade, doesn’t transfer (esp if you powder it a little), and easy to remove without tugging on your eyes. I’m not sure if Kat Von D is a clean beauty brand but all of her products are cruelty-free and vegan and the liner is 100% allergen-free. I don’t like Kad Von D as a person so I don’t invest in her other products but I have yet to find a liner as perfect as this one. Also, the liner lasts about 9 or 10 months. I don’t do makeup daily so if you do, you might have to buy this twice a year but it’s worth the money.
I only own one eye palette and that is the Anastasia Beverly Hills modern renaissance palette. I’m not sure if ABH is a clean beauty brand but this palette is 100% allergen-free. It’s on the warmer side but the eyeshadows are very wearable for all skin tones. I don’t like wearing heavy eyeshadow so I would use colors like golden ochre, warm taupe, or buon fresco as clean base for my liner. Cyprus umber is a great color for your eyelid crease and for lightly contouring your nose with whatever is left over on your finger/brush. I use tempura for my inner eye corner and vermeer or primavera on the lids if I’m feeling fancy. On some special days, I’ll use a super light wash of the bolder colors for monochrome looks. It’s a very versatile palette and it’ll last you a long time!!
My Observations for Brands I Haven’t Tried Personally:
Rituel de Fille is honestly the most gorgeous makeup brand I’ve ever seen (just go to their site, just do it). I love the aesthetic, the quality, the service, EVERYTHING. It’s a bit expensive so I definitely will have to save up to get these but from what I’ve seen so far, it has it all; a great color selection for all skin tones and multi-use products. You can use blushes as a lip color or eye color. The same applies to bronzers and highlighters (I’ve NEVER seen highlighters that look THAT gorgeous). When I stumbled upon that brand, I regretted every other purchase I’ve ever made because I wanted everything!! Their makeup is so unique, it’s almost alien. Also, they have a service where you can send your photo and they’ll help you color-match and give you advice on which tones will fit you the best.
RMS and 100PercentBeauty are two of the best and well-known clean beauty products on the market because they’re very transparent about the production quality with the public. I personally gear towards 100PercentBeauty because they have everything you need for makeup and skincare and all of their products work well from reviews that I’ve seen. I love RMS’s uncoverup concealer, lip + cheek tints, and eyeshadows but the price is a bit too steep for the amount you get and the reviews are a bit more mixed. I feel like the RMS concealer, although it has cleaner ingredients, is comparable to Glossier’s concealer so I wouldn’t reach for it despite the popularity.
Kjaer Weiss and Lilah B. has great selections and gorgeous packaging (esp KW) but they don’t stand out to me. There are several reasons; the price for KW is just too much for what you get, Lilah B. makeup does not have many options for darker skinned people, and both of these brands have cheaper alternatives (in formula and colors). However, they still carry very beautiful products!
I hope this helped!

Natural Makeup List / Possible Future Purchases - work in progress
Tumblr media
These are makeup brands and products that I have found to not contain the following ingredients and are also cruelty free;
Paraben
Sulfate
Alcohol
Silicone
Mineral Oil
Synthetic Perfume
As notated in my “skin care ingredients” post, I opted to leave out silicone, due to people with sensitivity and rosacea (IE me) having negative reactions.
I have yet to purchase from these sites, but I do plan on it, so a review will come later. I am also still working on researching all the finer details.
Helpful Notes;
Always check your ingredients! Some sites contain all natural products, while others only have a few select options as natural.
I would avoid going to makeup retailers like Sephora and using their search option. Even though I picked the options for silicone-free, it still gave me results for products that contained it. And most of them don’t carry natural makeup, even if they *say* they do - some even had a dedicated section! - and it was not even natural. I mean, lol?
The sites are as follows;
Free the People
Items; All.
100% Pure
Items; All.
Kryolan
Items;
Foundation; Coloring vision palette 18 colors, cream color circle, illusion, supracolor series, supracolor palette series, tv paint stick, all of the ultra foundation series (not including ultra fluid foundation).
Concealer; Concealer circle, concealer cube, dermacolor concealer, erase stick.
Powder; Anti-shine powder, blot powder, blot powder palette, translucent powder.
Blusher; Illusion.
Highlight and contouring; HD living color, holographic pigments, illusion, illusion palettes, satin powder,.
Body;
Under base;
Nuest Cosmetics
Items;  Magical Jelly Highlighter.
I have contacted the site multiple times about the ingredients for their cushion, and had no response. A bit sketchy as they do not list it on there site! No customer support! And it seems to be only one color?!
Green Alley Shop
Items;
Foundation; isoiBulgarian rose cover fit foundation pact Spf30/PA+++
Eyes; Bulgarian Rose Natural Eyes
Lips;  Bulgarian Rose Lip Treatment Balm,  Bulgarian Rose Natural Lip Color
Alima Pure
Items;

Sugar Pill
Items;

Items;
Winky Lux
Items;
IT Cosmetics
Items; Your Skin But Better™ CC+™ Airbrush Perfecting Powder™ SPF 50+
Sites to avoid;
Amazon. They are a good go to for every day household items, but DO NOT buy beauty products on this site. Skin care, makeup, body washes, etc. A lot of items are dupes of the originals (even if the item is a dupe from a name brand, that dupe is duped by low cost Chinese companies), or just plain scam - not even containing similar ingredients, because they often are swapped for a harsh, cheaper version. Good signs that indicate this are; different label, products look opened/damaged/used, the product causing adverse reactions, and missing ingredient list. A Google search will yield you the same information about the Amazon product scam. Do yourself a save, and just purchase from reputable sites and or directly from the manufacturer!

Products were gifted by the brands and BeautyTap. I was especially excited for all of the Kosas products. I can always use more lip care products! My favorites were the Kosas collagen lip mask and the hyaluronic Hotliner product. The lip mask was super moisturizing if you use it overnight, but it also doubles as a sting free lip plumping product. So it’s suggested to use in the day time as well, not just a night time lip mask. The Hotliner is a super smooth formula, so I didn’t have issues with it breaking during application. Last but not least is the Ren acid based toner which helps you battle dead skin. Full reviews can be read here.

Best of 2019: The 49 Beauty Products That I Loved Most This Year (Makeup, Haircare and More)
Now that you're up to speed on my favourite facial skincare of 2019, it's time to share the rest—all the makeup, haircare, hair tools and bath and body products that I used and loved this year.
The Best Beauty Products of 2019
Best Primer
Tumblr media
REN Perfect Canvas Clean Primer
I don't use primer that often, but when I do, I reach for REN Perfect Canvas Clean Primer. I love that it's silicone-free, feels fresh on your skin and helps to mattify the T-zone a little bit. The ILIA True Skin Radiant Priming Serum is also great, but perhaps a tad more prone to pilling.
Best Sheer Foundation (Liquid)
Tumblr media
Sappho New Paradigm Essential Foundation
I've never found a liquid foundation that I like better than Sappho New Paradigm Essential Foundation. (I wear the shade Leisha.) I hate the feel of most foundations on my skin, but not this one. It's super light, with sheer coverage that's buildable to a medium. I'm obsessed with the clean ingredients, fresh scent, and how it's virtually undetectable on your skin. You need to try it!
Best Sheer Foundation (Cream)
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up
On a day-to-day basis, I almost always wear RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up in shade 00. It's a hybrid concealer and sheer foundation, and I just find it easy and quick to use—and so natural-looking on my skin. (See my application tips here!) I love that it's made with all-natural oils, which have never once broken me out.
Best High-Coverage Foundation
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up Cream Foundation
I'm not a full-coverage or even medium-coverage foundation person, but I've been testing out the new RMS Beauty "Un" Cover-Up Cream Foundation. If you like a really perfected skin look, this dense cream does the job without looking mask-like on the skin. I just find it leans a little more yellow than the original "Un" Cover-Up.
Best Tinted Moisturizer
Tumblr media
Omorovicza Complexion Perfector
Even though I only wear it in the summer, since the shades run a bit dark for me, the Omorovicza Complexion Perfector is probably the best tinted moisturizer formula I've tried to date. It's silicone-free, lightweight, and gives good light coverage (more than the bareMinerals Complexion Rescue, my other favourite).
Best BB/CC Cream
Tumblr media
Sappho New Paradigm CC Cream
Just like the brand's Foundation, Sappho New Paradigm CC Cream feels light and fresh on your skin. I think this one is best for oilier types, as it has more of a semi-matte finish. Despite the mousse-like texture, I'd describe the coverage level as light. The Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream, which I also wore quite a bit, is much more sheer and dewy.
Best Foundation Brush
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Foundation Brush
The right foundation brush can make the difference between a streaky application and a flawless one. The best I've found is RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Foundation Brush, which I usually use with "Un" Cover-Up, but also works with liquid formulas. Something about the bristles buffs the product into your skin so it looks super natural!
Best Concealer
Tumblr media
W3ll People Bio Correct Multi-Action Concealer
I've long been searching for a high-coverage, opaque concealer like Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer, but with more natural ingredients. I finally found it in W3ll People Bio Correct Multi-Action Concealer (and not a moment too soon, because Make Up For Ever just discontinued my shade!). The only problem is it does tend to separate and go watery after a few months, so I'll have to keep buying replacements. For that reason, Make Up For Ever, along with Sappho New Paradigm, Glossier and Surratt Beauty were also in my concealer rotation this year.
Best Concealer Brush
Tumblr media
Kevyn Aucoin The Concealer Brush
The secret to concealing spots and blemishes is a tiny brush—that way, your concealer is only going on the discolouration, not the surrounding skin. I swear by Kevyn Aucoin The Concealer Brush.
Best Powder
Tumblr media
ILIA Soft Focus Finishing Powder
To set my makeup and tame any excess shine (especially when I use "Un" Cover-Up), I love ILIA Soft Focus Finishing Powder. This is a cornstarch-based translucent powder that does a great job of mattifying, but doesn't leave your skin dried out or weirdly slippery, like pure silica powders can. It's also silicone-free and talc-free.
Best Cream Blush
Tumblr media
Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek
After trying and loving their Lip Balms, I bought a few shades of Lilah B. Divine Duo Lip & Cheek this year, and they're equally good. Although the ingredients are not as natural as the RMS Beauty Lip2Cheek collection (which I also wore a lot), the colours, texture and finish are beautiful. I also still use the Olio E Osso Balms (reviewed here).
Best Powder Blush
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Pressed Blush
It had been a while since I was wowed by a powder blush, until Rose-Marie Swift herself painted my face with RMS Beauty Pressed Blush back in the spring. I never would have chosen the shade Mooncry for my fair skin, but it creates a gorgeous realistic flush that will work on any skin tone (just vary the intensity of your application).
Best Bronzer
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer
For bronzer, I find creams look a lot more natural than powders, so I like RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer for a sun-kissed glow. I also use RMS Beauty Contour Bronze, which is a little deeper and more brown-toned. With both, I just brush them across my nose and cheeks—I never contour!
Best Blush Brush
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Blush Brush
I used to apply cream blushes and bronzers with my fingers, but the RMS Beauty Skin2Skin Blush Brush has made such a difference. You get a much more light and even diffusion of colour.
Best Luminizer
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Living Luminizer
For me, the OG luminizer, RMS Beauty Living Luminizer, is still the best for my skin tone. (And when I met Rose-Marie, she confirmed that it's my perfect shade.) This stuff always gives my skin a healthy sheen that doesn't look like makeup.
Best Freckle Pen
Tumblr media
Freck OG The Original Freckle
I first heard about Freck OG The Original Freckle when the product was still in development, and have wanted one ever since! I finally got my hands on a tube in 2019, and I have to say, it really is the best for creating faux freckles. The only catch is that you need to take your time with it. When I'm in a rush and I still want that cute sun-kissed look, I use Stila All Day Waterproof Brow Color in the shade Light.
Best Eyeshadow
Tumblr media
Kosas 10-Second Liquid Eyeshadow
The shade range needs expanding, but I was really impressed with Kosas 10-Second Liquid Eyeshadow this year. Even though it's a clean formula, it doesn't crease or slide around, and you can easily blend it with your fingers. I just think they need more neutrals, because I only like the shades Globe (champagne) and Astronaut (silver), and the latter is only available in the Mixed Metals Trio. In addition to this brand, I also wore a lot of RMS Beauty Eye Polish (evidently I've been more into cream eyeshadows than powders).
Best Eyeliner
Tumblr media
Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner
In 2019, I started feeling like all my eyeliners were looking too dark and harsh—even the browns. But it's not so easy finding lighter shades! Fortunately, a random Internet comment led me to Stila Smudge Stick Waterproof Eye Liner in Lionfish. It's a metallic bronze, and a great choice for people with light skin, eyes and hair.
Lash Serum
Tumblr media
neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum
After finishing my last bottle of Latisse, I switched to neuLASH Lash Enhancing Serum this year. I don't think the results are as dramatic, but I think it does the job just fine!
Best Eyelash Curler
Tumblr media
Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler
I switched from Shu Uemura to the Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler, and it seems to fit my eyes better. It always captures all my lashes, never pulls or pinches, and the curl has a nice, gentle curve and is long-lasting.
Best Mascara
Tumblr media
Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara
I hate looking in the mirror mid-day and seeing mascara smudged under my eyes, so now I only use tubing formulas that won't budge. Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara is the ultimate—a shiny, jet-black formula that volumizes and lengthens without clumping, and stays put until you want to remove it (with just warm water).
Best Brow Mascara
Tumblr media
Glossier Boy Brow
I don't know if I've found the perfect brow mascara yet, but the one I used the most in 2019 was Glossier Boy Brow in Blond. I like the colour, which has the right amount of ashiness; I just wish it had more hold. Truthfully, I want to go back to Maybelline Brow Drama, but I can never find it here in Canada in Blonde (even though it's still on the brand website).
Best Tinted Lip Balm
Tumblr media
Lanolips Rose Gold 101 Ointment
I have a million tinted lip balms, so it's hard to pick a favourite, but I probably wore Lanolips Rose Gold 101 Ointment the most. You get all the healing benefits of lanolin with a flattering, warm pinky-red tint. But there are so many others I love, too: Kosas, Lilah B., Henné Organics (reviewed here), Dior, French Girl (reviewed here), Cocokind, Tata Harper (reviewed here), Olio E Osso (reviewed here) and COOLA (reviewed here).
Best Colour-Adjusting Lip Balm
Tumblr media
Buxom Powerplump Lip Balm
The new Buxom Powerplump Lip Balm is the best colour-adjusting lip product I've tried (and I've tried a few—remember when they used to be a big thing?). Because it's in a balm, it doesn't dry your lips out like its predecessors. On my lips, it turns into a pretty sheer rose shade, which suits me perfectly because I don't like to look too lipsticky. When I want a brighter pink, another good one is the Winky Lux Flower Balm.
Best Lipstick
Tumblr media
Kosas Weightless Lip Color Lipstick
Just like I stopped wearing dark eyeliner, I'm also in a no-lipstick phase lately. Most of them just feel like too much—except for Kosas Weightless Lip Color Lipstick. The three lightest shades are the closest thing to "your lips, only better." My favourite is Stardust!
Best Lip Liner
Tumblr media
RMS Beauty Lip Liner
I rarely wear lip liner because I prefer my lip colour to look dabbed on, not so precise. But sometimes I like to build up my thinner top lip a bit with RMS Beauty Lip Liner in the shade Nighttime Nude (reviewed here). It's the perfect match for my lip tone, and it has a lot of "grip."
Best Shampoo
Tumblr media
Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Shampoo
I wash my hair daily, and Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Shampoo was my shampoo of choice in 2019. It's clear (not creamy), so it doesn't weigh my fine hair down, and it's sulfate-free.
Best Conditioner
Tumblr media
Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Conditioner
I also used the matching Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Conditioner, which is silicone-free. It's fairly light, so I think it's best for fine hair that doesn't need a lot of detangling.
Best Comb
Tumblr media
Mason Pearson Rake Comb
Out of the shower, I comb out my hair using the Mason Pearson Rake Comb. Supposedly, this is for "very thick, curly or tightly permed hair," and mine is none of those things. But I like it because it's so gentle on wet hair.
Best Brush
Tumblr media
Mason Pearson Junior Mixture Nylon & Boar Bristle Hair Brush
I'm still using my trusty Mason Pearson Junior Mixture Nylon & Boar Bristle Hair Brush (reviewed here) to brush my dry hair. I've had this brush for more than a decade, so that's how well it holds up!
Best Heat-Protecting Spray
Tumblr media
Philip Kingsley Perfecting Primer
Usually, I let my hair air-dry, but when I do use a blowdryer, I protect my hair from the heat with the Philip Kingsley Perfecting Primer. It doesn't have the cleanest ingredients (I'm still on the hunt for a more natural version), but I like that it leaves my hair soft and full of body.
Best Volumizing Spray
Tumblr media
Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Spray
For a little lift at the roots, I've been using Briogeo Blossom & Bloom Ginseng + Biotin Volumizing Spray. I love the ingredients, and it doesn't feel like you've got product in your hair.
Best Hairdryer
Tumblr media
T3 PROi Professional Hair Dryer
I'm pretty sure the T3 PROi Professional Hair Dryer is being discontinued soon, but it sure has served me well these last few years! I've always trusted this brand's hairdryers because they last forever and never damage your hair. This is the best dryer I've ever owned, so I can't wait to see what they replace it with!
Best Flat Iron
Tumblr media
Drybar The Tress Press
Meanwhile, the best flat iron I've ever owned is Drybar The Tress Press. I use this daily to touch up my bangs and the ends of my hair, and it takes literally two minutes. It never creates dents and always glides smoothly through my hair.
Best Dry Shampoo
Tumblr media
Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo
After looking for a cleaner, non-aerosol alternative to Dove, I settled on Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo this year. It's not perfect (the packaging sucks), but I feel like it's a lot better for my scalp and the environment!
Best Texturizing Spray
Tumblr media
Playa Endless Summer Spray
For creating beachy texture, I bought Playa Endless Summer Spray, and I like it well enough. It's made with natural ingredients like sea salt and aloe vera, and isn't super moisturizing, which is a plus in my books. (I find some beach sprays weigh my hair down too much.)
Best Body Wash

REN Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Anti-Fatigue Body Wash
REN Atlantic Kelp and Magnesium Anti-Fatigue Body Wash was my main shower gel this year, and I love the jelly texture and spa-like scent.
Best Body Scrub
Tumblr media
Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub
Every few days, I buff away dry skin in the shower with Indie Lee Coconut Citrus Scrub (reviewed here). Not only are the ingredients all-natural, but it's so moisturizing, you can get away without body lotion.
Best Acid Exfoliant for Body
Tumblr media
Paula's Choice Clear Acne Body Spray
I invested in Paula's Choice Clear Acne Body Spray to prevent sweat-induced body breakouts in the summertime. The spray makes it easy to reach your back, and it has two percent salicylic acid in a fast-absorbing liquid (so you can get dressed right away).
Best Body Lotion
Tumblr media
Odacité Perfect Nutrients Body Lotion
I'm the pickiest person when it comes to body moisturizers, because there's so much product being absorbed over a large surface area—so the ingredients need to be top-notch. Odacité Perfect Nutrients Body Lotion is basically perfect, because it's a blend of aloe vera, coconut oil, glycerin and jojoba oil. If you need more moisture, I'd layer a body oil on top.
Best Body Oil
Tumblr media
Monoï Tiki Tahiti Huile Parfumée
When I want to transport myself to the tropics, I slather on some Monoï Tiki Tahiti Huile Parfumée, a fragrant monoï oil made the traditional way by steeping tiare flowers in coconut oil. Otherwise, I just use plain Kopari Coconut Melt.
Best Body Sunscreen
Tumblr media
Love Sun Body Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Fragrance-Free
The body sunscreen I was most impressed with this year was Love Sun Body Natural Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30 Fragrance-Free. It's waterproof, silicone-free and 100 percent natural, with 20.4 percent zinc oxide as the active ingredient. And unlike most mineral SPFs, it's not whitening at all (even on darker skin)! You could use it on your face as well, it's just a little on the dewy side.
Best Deodorant
Tumblr media
Schmidt's Ylang-Ylang + Calendula Natural Deodorant
For deodorant, the formula (and scent) I like best is Schmidt's Ylang-Ylang + Calendula Natural Deodorant. Great ingredients and it works!
Best Fragrance
Tumblr media
Lush Sikkim Girls
If you're a long-time reader, you might remember me gushing about Lush Sikkim Girls back in the day, when it first launched. I don't know why I ever stopped wearing it, but this year I went back to it and realized it's the closest thing I have to a signature scent. It's frangipani and other white florals, but mixed with incense and vanilla. Very feminine, natural and Bohemian. I adore it!
Best Nail Buffer
Tumblr media
Revlon Crazy Shine Nail Buffer
If you don't have the time or inclination a manicure, Revlon Crazy Shine Nail Buffer is the best thing ever. It makes your nails so shiny, it looks like you're wearing clear nail polish!
Best Nail Polish
Tumblr media
Nails Inc. NailKale Nail Illuminator
I love a sheer pearly nail polish, like Nails Inc. NailKale Nail Illuminator, which I wore all through 2019. Unfortunately, it now seems to be discontinued... hopefully they bring it back!
Best Hand Lotion
Tumblr media
Lano Coconutter Hand Cream Intense
Just like lanolin has healed my chapped lips, it's also made a difference for my hands. I love all the Lano hand creams, especially Lano Coconutter Hand Cream Intense because it smells like coconut. And it doesn't leave you greasy!
Best Cuticle Cream/Foot Cream
Tumblr media
Lansinoh Lanolin Cream
I also use Lansinoh Lanolin Cream, which is a 100 percent lanolin ointment, to moisturize dry cuticles and even feet. It also doubles as a lip balm. (If you want cuter packaging, get the Lanolips 101 Ointment!)
Best Foot Peel
Tumblr media
Baby Foot Exfoliation Foot Peel
Every couple months or so, I do a deep exfoliation using Baby Foot Exfoliation Foot Peel (reviewed here). If you're prone to calluses and thickened skin on your heels, nothing is more effective at getting it off!

Oh, snap! MAC at Ulta!? Yup, pretty soon you’ll be able to stroll into an Ulta store and snag a stick of Costa Riche. MAC is going to be carried on the Ulta website and in 25 Ulta stores starting in June.
Dear Ulta: now please add a restaurant so I can grab a grilled cheese and a latte while I’m there. Thx.
In this piece about why women need their girlfriends even more as we get older, author Kari Kampakis gets some great advice from a group of older gals, and I’m taking it to heart. “Don’t ever lose touch with your girlfriends, sweetheart. The older you get, the more you’ll need them.”
Did you ever wear Love’s Baby Soft? Here’s the fascinating (and sometimes full-on creepy) backstory of one of our most iconic fragrances.
Two words: magnetic lashes. Who’s the glorious genius who invented these potentially life-changing doohickeys, and can I shake her hand?!
I REALLY want to try these ASAP, and I’m desperately hoping they won’t weigh down my lids.
Some makeup-minded thieves recently stole $4.5 million in eyeshadow palettes… Holy cosmetics criminality, Batman!
Apparently, foundation is really gross. I wanted to look away when I saw the title of this post (“Here’s How Much Bacteria Is Actually On Your Makeup Products”), but you know how it is… Curious kitty and all.
I printed out this article and put it into a file I have of tips on raising Connor Claire (I’m nerdy that way, and I like to be prepared): “Want to Raise Empowered Women? Start in Middle School.”

Ever heard of a skincare brand called Scaf?Whoever did their packaging gets a high-five from me!

And from earlier this week on MBB…here’s a little look at a neat indie luxury brand called Kosas Cosmetics.
I also played with a few new things from Too Faced, namely the Natural Love Palette, the Love Light Prismatic Highlighters and the Peanut Butter & Honey Palette.
In other news, Benefit has some new contouring products and a spiffy pink highlighter, and here’s what it’s like to wear Urban Decay’s HBIC lash trios.

Wow… THIS IS BREATHTAKING! One of these days — I swear — I’m going to learn how to ride a horse!

The most realistic makeup tutorial to EVER hit YouTube! My favorite part? “My everyday makeup routine generally starts with a primer. I use this MAC primer that a lady sold me against my will. She was really attractive, and I was threatened by her, so I was just like, ‘I’ll just buy it because I’m intimidated by you.'”

Ooh, I’m going to try this combo with MAC Swiss Chocolate and Heroine Lipstick!
I keep trying to convince my body that’s it’s OK to sleep in a little on Caturdays, but it’s like, “Nope! Not gonna do it. WAKE THE EFF UP ALREADY.”
So I’m up early…but on the #glasshalffull side, maybe I can get my chores done early. That way I can finish marathon-ing the second season of Love on Netflix. I’ve got a box of Pop Secret and a couch ready for my butt, LOL!
I may or may not also run a few miles on the treadmill…but we’ll see about that.
I hope your coffee is already on its way to your tum, my friend. May adventure find you.
Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Switching to Clean Makeup? Here’s Where to Start.
New Post has been published on http://healingawerness.com/news/switching-to-clean-makeup-heres-where-to-start/
Switching to Clean Makeup? Here’s Where to Start.
I will be the first to admit that the clean makeup world can be overwhelming. I feel like you’re first introduced to it and then you want ALL of your products to be non-toxic! Which is totally understandable… the facts about conventional beauty really do make me want to do a complete overhaul. But might I suggest a better, less wasteful way to switch to clean makeup?
There is a strategy to switching to clean makeup, one that I’ve implemented and that has helped so many of you switch to cleaner makeup to. But first it starts with an audit…here’s how to switch to clean makeup!
How to Switch to Clean Beauty
1. Start with surface area.
This could look different for everyone depending on how much/what makeup you wear. Which of your most used products cover the most surface area on your face? This is foundation for most people but if you aren’t a foundation gal, maybe the product that covers the most surface area for you is concealer, blush or bronzer. This is is specific to you!
I suggest this as the first step because sure, it could be great for you to switch out your mascara but if you’re obsessed with your conventional mascara, keep it for now. It covers such a small part of your face, we can start with the bigger hitters first.
2. Transition products that are running out.
If you know you’re almost out of blush, make a mental note to buy clean next time! I love this method because it is far less wasteful than doing a full makeup kit swap. As you slowly work through your conventional products, aim to buy clean.
3. Invest in multi-use products.
If you’re tight on budget look for things that are multi-use. Lip and cheek products are a great option, as are bronzer and eyeshadow. Get creative! If you’re working with limited funds try to reach for products that offer a variety of uses.
4. Adjust your expectations.
Clean beauty has come a long way and honestly, many clean makeup brands are making products just as good as conventional, however you cannot expect a foundation made without preservatives to last as long or not experience any kind of separation. Sometimes products take a little bit of extra work or won’t last as long. That’s the price you pay for using something that is good for you.
Where to Find Clean Beauty
There are a few stores I love and trust when it comes to clean beauty.
Credo Beauty – Credo takes the cake when it comes to favorite places! I’m slightly biased because they have a store in SF that I love but I also just think they’re a great company. They have high standards for the products they carry and they have my full trust! If you’re shopping remotely, they have amazing customer service support online. They can even recommend shades for you based on other products you own and love!
AILLEA – This company started in Denver and has expanded to six locations across the country! Their product range reminds me a lot of Credo. Worth seeing if there is a store near you but like Credo they also offer online products.
Detox Market – Detox Market carries a lot of the same brands that Credo does but casts a larger net. They have more products which is awesome but also means you have to do a little research on your own.
Sephora – Yep, Sephora is upping their game when it comes to clean beauty! They carry Kosas, ILIA, RMS and Tatcha which all have my stamp of approval. I will say, they carry a lot of other brands that they consider “clean” which are actually brands that are greenwashing (*cough* Tarte *cough*).
Now before you ask me about Beautycounter, I’ll direct you to my Beautycounter review and let you decide if it’s worth the investment….hint: I don’t think it is!
Trusted Clean Makeup Brands
The world of clean beauty is rapidly growing which is amazing but also means you have to weed through the brands and products available a little bit. If you’re feeling completely overwhelmed by the options out there, I wanted to share my tested and approved clean beauty brands and products.
Vapour Beauty – I’m really impressed with this brand as a whole. Here are my top picks:
Foundation – I fell in love with this medium coverage foundation last summer. It leaves my skin with the perfect amount of coverage and a dewy glow that I’m obsessed with.
Bronzing Stick – I love this bronzer because it’s compact and perfect for on-the-go! Use on your cheeks and eyelids for a pulled together, bronzed look.
Highlighter – This highlighter leaves my skin looking glowy and dewey while still looking super natural.
ILIA – While not all of their products work for me, I’m full on obsessed with the ones that do. Here are my faves:
Tint Skin – This is a new-to-me product that I cannot get enough of! I’ve been wearing this for the past two months straight – I can’t quit it! It combines skincare with SPF with light coverage and I’m in love.
Concealer – A really solid concealer option. Similar to Vapour, it is an affordable option that is great quality and long lasting.
Color Haze – This multi-use stick has become another one of my go-to’s! I love the natural flush it adds to my cheek as blush and is also gorgeous on the lips and eyelids!
Mascara – This is one of my all-time holy grail products. If you’re scared to give up conventional mascara, get this one! Trust me.
HAN Beauty – This seems to be a lesser known clean beauty company but I have been really impressed with these two products:
Bronzer – This powdered bronzer is the first HAN product I tried and fell in love with. I can’t say enough good things about this product. It’s super long lasting, affordable and has great ingredient.
Blush – Since I loved the bronzer I had to try the blush and it’s a fave as well! I have the shade “bloom” which is a soft rose pink and gives the most refreshed, natural flush look that lasts all day long.
A few other mentions: Maya Chia, Juice Beauty, Kosas, Gressa, 100% Pure, Lily Lolo
Unsure about a product? Think Dirty, Skin Deep, and Good Guide are three apps designed to give you unbiased information about cosmetic and beauty products and can help you make more informed decisions about the safety of your products.

There are so many amazing beauty brands, classics and new and emerging, but I only have one face and money doesn’t grow on trees, so there are many brands on my radar which I’d love to try myself one day. I’ve created a little wishlist (who am I kidding, it’s kind of long hehe) of brands I’m hoping to try in 2020… let’s begin!
********************
Kosas Cosmetics
Kosas has intrigued me for quite some time now, I love the back-story… L.A.-based artist, chemist and all-round cool girl Sheena Yaitanes created her makeup collection informed by colour theory. The range has ultra-flattering shades which are supposed to suit every skin tone and are enriched with botanical formulas…
I’ve heard glowing reviews about the Kosas cream blush and highlighter duos, lipsticks and most recently their 10-second liquid eyeshadows. Although if I’m being honest, I’ve heard quite a few mixed (and not so good) reviews about the LipFuel Hyaluronic LipBalm and the formula and application of their Tinted Face Oil.
I especially love the 10-second liquid eyeshadow in the shade ‘globe’, it’s the perfect shimmery finish and sounds really simple and quick to apply… you had me at hello 🙂

Glow Recipe
I recently listened to an interesting interview with the co-founders of Glow Recipe, Sarah Lee and Christine Chang, on the Second Life Podcast. The story behind the brand is fascinating, the ingredients they use are fabulous and the packaging is so lovely!! I’d particularly love to try the Watermelon Glow face-mask.

Go-To Skincare
I’ve always loved the branding, packaging and marketing of Go-To Skincare, created by beauty guru Zoe Foster-Blake. I love the tongue-in-cheek names and descriptions of her collection and have read lots of glowing reviews. It’s also cruelty-free, natural and an A-beauty (Australian beauty) brand, so it really ticks all the boxes hehe. When I finish my current face oil, I think I’ll treat myself to ‘Face Hero’, but everything else looks amazing too hehe!

********************
Nudestix
I discovered Nudestix through Instagram and now see it in one out of five beauty photos on Instagram. The creamy formulas sound nourishing and create a natural look which I love the sound of. I have my eye on their cream stick blush in the shade ‘cherry blossom babe’ and also was really hoping to get my hands on their collaboration with Estee Lalonde, but the cost of postage to Australia from Selfridges was extraordinary, what a shame! I honestly think the products are a bit on the pricey side considering the very small size of the products, but I am interested to try them haha. Do you think they’re worth the ‘hype’?

I’d love to know what makeup and skincare brands are on your wishlist this year. Also, if you’ve tried any of the brands I’ve mentioned, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts 🙂

Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss Review
Kosas Wet Lip Oil Gloss Review
Despite owning dozens of lip glosses, most of them sit in my drawer collecting dust. While I love the glass-like finish these products give me, they’re usually too sheer for my tastes and feel heavy on my lips. However, the chic architectural packaging and skin-enhancing formula of the Kosas Lip Oil Glosses ($27) intrigued me enough to give another one a try.
The brand describes the product as a…

Before you sit to read this blog post for whatever reason you’ve decide to, may I make a humble recommendation? Brew yourself a holiday blend coffee and add a little bit of pumpkin pie spice into the grounds. You’ll thank me later. You’ll also note that I labeled this post “beauty edition.” I’m also going to write a more general post about food and life, people and such. Stay tuned.
There have always been things in my life that I wish I could like better– like This American Life or bubble tea– but for some reason I just end up feeling “meh” about them. I feel like I could live without them, but then when I hear other people rave about them and squeal “Oh, I love bubble tea so much! Let’s all go get bubble tea” I wonder if I could integrate this into my life on the regular. Really, I want to bond with people over these thing. But somewhere deep inside, I know that I will just never listen to This American Life and those tapioca bubbles feel like guppies swimming around my mouth. Sorry.
But I digress, this blog for the large part is about beauty and for the small part about the gross number of coffee shops I visit. So here are a few beauty products that I wish I liked more. I don’t hate them, I just don’t understand why they are so popular. So I lined them up to look vaguely like the movie poster for Empire Records (something else I wish I liked better).
In the words of Bianca Stratford from 10 Things I Hate About You “I know you can be underwhelmed and I know you can be overwhelmed… but can you ever just be ‘whelmed’”? Yes, the following makeup and skincare products are just whelming me.
Glossier Skin Tint
*shaking head side to side like a disappointed parent* Glossier, glossier, glossier… what am I going to do with you? That’s what I think whenever I see this skin tint waving at me from my makeup drawer. I want to love her, but I feel like she’s just a limp handshake waiting to happen. I’ve tried to make this skin tint work so many ways on so many days. I used a brush: fail. I used my hands: fail. I tried two layers: not much of a difference. I could mix it with another product but then, I’m just putting a band-aid on it.
Could someone please tell me how to use this or how to like this? Because she was not cheap. On another level, I wish I liked everything from Glossier because my name is Grace and having a big “G” stamped on all my makeup and skincare feels very personal.
To me, this skin tint is the makeup equivalent of a the Emperor’s New Clothes. Do you see it? Do you? It’s fashion– but it’s just not there.
RMS Beauty Eye Polish in Magnetic and RMS Living Luminizer MultEYEtasker
I was so excited to get this Eye Polish because I like one-swipe eyeshadows. I just love something that I can dig my finger into in the morning, swipe on my eyes, add mascara, call it a look, and be out the door to work. But this shadow makes me look like I got punched. It is so greasy and creasey, and perhaps it’s just the shade that I picked up or the batch or the fact that my eyelids have more oil than the Saudi’s, but she’s just not working for me.
The color “Magnetic” is suuuuch a pretty purple/brown/greige when I swatch it on the back of my hand. Maybe I’ll try putting it on top of a powder primer? Or set it with a powder? But again,  is that just a band-aid?
On the other hand, I have nothing good to say about this little Living Luminizer stick. Maybe because it’s winter and this texture needs to be warmed up with finger that this doesn’t work for me. But, frankly, someone didn’t think this product through. Living Luminizer is one of RMS’s earliest, most foundational products in pot form. In fact, I still have the one I picked up four or five years ago from ABC Carpet and Home.
IN FACT when ABC in Union Square started stocking RMS, Rose Marie Swift used to stop by often and just hang out there. I had many a lovely conversation with her about life and organics and coconut oil. I felt her enthusiasm for this product. So it really is a damn shame that this stick is a let down, but at the same time, it makes a lot of sense for the formulation. If you have to warm it up with your fingers, then applying it in a teeny tiny stick directly onto your eye would surely make it break and crumble.
Enough said. I recommend the UnCover Up and the blush un Demure. And the OG Living Luminizer. Just, apply everything with warm finger tips.
Briogeo Scalp Revival charcoal + tea tree scalp treatment
For a product with such good reviews and such a lofty $32 price tag for an ounce of product, I really wish I noticed more of a difference with this. I want to like her. She was supposed to be my gateway drug to Briogeo so I could justify spending money on the scalp scrubbing shampoo. But geez, what a letdown. It’s such a thin, watery formula that it feels like it’s doing nothing to help my scalp.
First off, I had high hopes because I love charcoal and tea tree. I use tea tree oil on my skin, hair, cuts, etc. I also use it to add to home made cleaning products. It’s so good for you and it’s antibacterial– even if one whiff will have you saying “That’s the power of Pine Sol, baby!” Charcoal is also ideal for detoxing skin and whitening teeth. Love it.
But, and I tried to take a picture of this for you, all of the charcoal and good goods stick to the bottom of this bottle. I shake and shake, but they don’t budge.
Just, don’t bother. There’s not even enough for you to evenly coat your scalp. I felt like I was counting the pennies as I emptied pipet after pipet onto sections of my scalp. I’m going to finish this, but I just wish I liked it better…
4. Weleda Skin Food
This will likely be my most controversial pick of the bunch. I see soooo many people who rave about this. Trust me, I want to be on that bandwagon more than Jonathan Van Ness wants to get his hands on a beard. Women on Into the Gloss are always saying wild things about this like “I use it on my hair, nails, face, elbows, knees, I EVEN USED IT TO GREASE MY BIRTH CANAL AND I HAD A NO PAIN PREGNANCY.” Ok, so maybe not the last one, but I know that it blew up after Katie Jane Hughes started using it on her face as a primer.
But I have oily skin and Weleda Skin Food is Thiccc. I mean, just look at the dollops that I put in the photo. It’s too hard to spread all over my body and it’s far too sticky for me to want to do that. I do like it for cracked and split lips because it’s very soothing (heads up, it tastes gross). I do like it for my elbows and knees as well, but if ever anyone could be “just whelmed”… I mean, she’s ok.
5. Physicians Formula The Healthy Lip Velvet Liquid Lipstick
Dear Physicians Formula,
Have you ever heard of the word “brevity?” Because that’s a long-ass name, friends.
Love,
Grace
Actually these lipsticks are beautiful colors and they wear beautifully on the lips. This shade in particular, Tu-Lip Treatment is a gorgeous poppy, tulip spring red. It feels comfortable and stains nicely, but I rarely use it. …. it smells gross. For a product that’s going to be right under my sniffer, please make it a neutral smell. This smells synthetic and perfume-y. This is also my qualm with Maybelline lipsticks. Makeup brands should follow suit with M.A.C. and Kosas (the M.A.C. of green beauty), vanilla is a safe smell.
6. isoi Pore Tightening Tonic Essence
I wanted a toner. I wanted an essence. What I got: a glorifed rosewater spray that might have made me break out? I can’t say for sure. I bought this at Whole Foods. It’s in a gorgeous glass bottle and at $22, it’s one of the cheapest items in this all-natural Korean skin care brand’s line. I can’t find a good link for you to buy this online, but it carries some heavy claims.
“Pore tightening” and “sebum controlling” are just a few of the promises that the isoi website offers. I didn’t experience either. I’d rather just buy Heritage Store Rosewater and transfer it to this gorgeous, frosted-glass bottle. I’m guessing the bottle is where my dollars went, anyway.
7. Essence Volume Stylist 18hr Lash Extension Mascara
Panda.
Panda. PaNdA. PANDA. PANDA. I got broads in Atlanta. Twistin’ dope, lean, and the Fanta.
… yeah this mascara gives me panda eyes. I really want to like it because the brush is really good but I think I’d need a waterproof formula. I’ll likely give this to a friend or my sister.
xx
Grace
