7 boozy treats you must try in Tyrol
7 boozy treats you must try in Tyrol
A homemade Zirbeler is a real delicious treat. The Austrian region Tyrol is most famous for its winter sports and ski resorts in winter and its hiking and cycling trails in summer. The idyllic mountain sights and landscapes of thick forest and ‘Almenland’, the traditional summer farms where cattle and sheep are kept in meadows above the tree line. However there’s a third type of tourism possible…

it wasn't on the WIP folder list but I'm dying to know more about this "turnip booze" and the context behind it
Hello there!
I will tell you about the turnip booze! This is a part of the Question of Trust WIP worldbuilding
A few weeks back I was doing some worldbuilding. I started by creating the peninsula where most of the main characters are from and where the location of the story (a village named Tiangosa) is located. (I now have a map of the entire empire even if it´s still lacking towns, trade routes, etc.)
Now, I was creating the peninsula and one of the first things I noticed is how very north it is and how some specific parts are really really fucking cold. Another part is, that the middle region of the peninsula is a bloody cold desert because of the mountain ranges around it.
With that in mind, I had to figure out what they eat, what they make and what they have to trade.
It is a universally agreed fact that no matter where you go, one of the first things people figure out is alcohol. And since several of the main characters drink, I had to figure out what they drink.
Baltasar, was easy. He´s rich, he can afford imported alcohol. Others, however, cannot.
That started a debate with my brother about what could people that far north possibly drink, that would not be expensive to make. Now, the people in the desert (Barenas) don´t grow that many crops (onions, carrots, cabbage, turnip,...). The southern part does not have enough arable land for any substantial amount of wheat, although they know how to make beer and mead. Other than that, there is very little they can actually grow, which is a problem for the whole peninsula.
Turnip is not difficult to grow. It´s actually very easy to grow and tolerates a wide scale of soil. It grows the best in autumn and can also be grown in spring. They thrive in colder weather and hot weather will turn them bitter. You can eat both the greens and the root. They mature very fast too. Given that the peninsula is so cold, they can be grown for about 3/4 of the year.
Therefore, there is a lot of turnip on the peninsula. The question is, can you make turnip into alcohol?
The answer is yes, obviously. There are several real-life proofs that turnip can be turned into booze. Turkish Şalgam, for example, although that one has more ingredients than just turnip. Austrian Turnip Schnapps (Wildschönauer Krautinger), however, is simply distilled turnip.
Upon learning this, I´ve decided that turnip booze is a great idea that needs to be a part of my story. Now westernmost peninsula is known for drinking liquified turnip.

Wildschönauer Krautinger: Austria’s Turnip Schnapps
Wildschönauer Krautinger: Austria’s Turnip Schnapps
The union of Alpbach and the Wildschönau, an Austrian community in the Kufstein district of Tyrol, has created one of Austria’s prettiest and friendliest ski areas. Relatively low-cost, Ski Juwel is a place to target if you don’t like touristic places of the big-name resorts. But this isn’t the only feature of the area. In Wildschönau Valley locals have been distilling a strong turnip liquor…
