नये साल पे कुछ लिखने की सोच रहा था। अचानक मन किया कोई नयी हिन्दी मूवी देख लेते है फिर लिखेंगे। मनोज की कहानी हॉटस्टार पे देखी। वाक़ई में क्या फ़िल्म बनाई है। पूरी फ़िल्म देखते वक़्त पता नहीं कितनी बार मेरे आँखों में आंसू उतरे। नाम से ऐसा लगता था कि शायद मेरी कहानी हों। में भी १२ वी में फेल हुआ था। पिताजी की ज़िद थी इंजीनियर बनूँ , विषय बदला ओर बड़ी मुश्किल से आर्ट्स में ग्रेजुएशन हो पाई। दिल्ली…

TT, are you following kunal's show about partition? He's playing an outright negative character and his fan girls are justifying the character's villainous actions in pretty poetry. If this doesn't normalise abuse, I don't know what else does.

Broken and lonely ,she sat inside the cave ,

Reluctantly waiting to be reminded again ,of how she is his slave .

Days would go by and the darkness only grew ,

Her mind now a captured city ,

Through which no birds ever flew.

No questions as to why she faces this pain ,

The answers she knew would all be in vain ,

He wasn't an animal ,just a tamer she self-convinced,

The hours of "training" and Making her do tricks ,could never really be rinsed .

But commiseration wasn't a feeling she was accustomed to ,

"Maybe life just has to be this way", for the outside world she never knew .

Dears,That begs the question:why do so many people appear to be scared of poetry? Whereby we always told that poetry is about emotions recollected in tranquility and the gentle expression of sentiments? Or about beauty,which ought to be desired and cherished,about daffodils and Nightingale's that are far removed for many from their immediate contexts?sometimes, in childhood, it felt like a conspiracy to equate the ornate or the decorative with the poetic as if the only purpose of poetry were to soothe agitated souls and offer relief from the vagaries of life. Reflecting upon this narrative about poetry in my childhood, I am filled with outrage.Only later,when I began to read and understand poetry on my own terms.did I realize that dissent or protest is at core of poetry.Poetry has always been anti hegemonic. Dissent,however, must be broadly understood in this context.It could surely mean raising your voice against oppressive powers or ills that prevail in the social structure. In poetry,or any art from for the matter,dissent or protest could also be interpreted as braking boundaries, creating new forms,genrs and vocabulary of expression and thus looking at the world with a fresh pair of eyes and sensibility. Poetry has always done that .Filmmaker Ritwik Ghatak used to say"Poetry is the art of all arts" Art doesn't adhere to set standards.In defiance, it seeks self_renewal.If poetry is art,how can resist defiance. The political events of today suggest that that poetry is spontaneous reaction to our time.It is more adaptable to forms of protest and performance. These events also show that poetry is deeply historical.It bears testimony to the times we live in and serves as a reminder of our past.A large contingent of our religious dogma.Is there any other way of reading Kabir? 30 for 30 – Decolonization through Poetry, Day 5

Day 5 – What is the magic you were taught to forget, but you are remembering and practicing?

Looked me in my eyes,

And leaned in, almost conspiratorially.

“It is possible that a big, beautiful brown man

Can walk freely and proudly in this world.”

I stared back, disbelief in my eyes at the words I just heard.

Firmly, confidently, he repeated himself again:

“It is possible that a big, beautiful brown man

Can walk freely and proudly in the world.”

And again, he repeated.

And a fourth time,

And a fifth, and so on, until a cloud began to lift

And, entranced, I joined in with him,

Nervously chuckling every couple of words first,

But slowly evolving into shaky confidence with every repetition.

Until the the phrase became a chant that followed me into the world,

A mantra firmly implanted in my mind,

A clarity spell revealing the magic within me,

Or rather, the magic that was me.

“It is possible that a big, beautiful brown man

Can walk freely and proudly in the world.”

And so now I do.
