Let's take a moment to remember my imperfect, but ever useful portable XP powerhouse, the Toshiba Satellite P25-S507. Probably my favorite laptop of all time. It's old, but hardly vintage yet. I was given one as a hand-me-down after it grenaded its own RAM a year after it was purchased.
I used it as my music jukebox, played a ton of Command & Conquer games on it, did my high school and college school work, talked with my friends on AIM, Skype Teamspeak and IRC, edited videos, programmed on it, did image editing in photoshop.
Pentium 4 @ 2.8GHz, 512MB DDR SRAM stock (mine was upgraded to 1GB and later 2GB), ~60GB hard drive, 17" WXGA TFT LCD, Windows XP (Home, but we upgraded it to Pro), ethernet jack AND wifi, DVD burner, SD card slot, all coming in at just shy of 10lbs of computer.
I either had it sitting on my desk next to my desktop computer (P4 or Phenom II x4), or used it sitting on my bed with a wooden board under it to give it sufficient ventilation so it wouldn't overheat or burn my legs. I disassembled that laptop several times over its lifetime, and replaced:
keyboards twice
the screen once (for the backlight)
4 hard drives
RAM once to upgrade from 1GB to 2GB
sound card subsystem once
battery twice
DVD drive once
Eventually after it destroyed TWO IDE SSDs (yes, those are a thing you can buy) after a shorter than normal lifespan, I realized it was a losing battle and gave up the fight. I realized that it no longer served as a laptop, it couldn't keep pace with newer versions of Skype (before Discord was a thing), and sure as hell wasn't going to run Discord. It got slower and slower at running simple websites like my email, or youtube -- things that it used to handle just fine.
The form factor was limiting, and it was outmatched for the times, so I finally gave up and decided to retire it in favor of building a dedicated power-house XP desktop to do the jobs that it excelled at.
I bought a spare for parts to supplement it, so maybe one day I'll install a fresh hard drive (either spinning rust, or an IDE to m.2 adapter), and bring it back to a working state.

Chapter 222 Trivia (Part 2)
(Previous part)
The liquid crystal display (LCD) shown in the chapter is a simplification of true LCDs. In reality, LCDs have 6 layers, which, when put together, do what Senku explains with the twisted light ray.

The polarizing layers (1+5) align the light, layer 2 is the screen's structure (e.g. a watch's face or RGB pixels) and takes the electronic input, layer 3 is the liquid crystal and 4 completes the input's circuit. Layer 6 is the backlight, as none of the layers make light.


The touchscreen on the smartphone isn't the type you'll see these days, but rather one with discrete buttons similar to having an invisible keyboard grid over the screen. This means Taiju won't be able to do things like scrolling, but he'll be able to press buttons just fine.

The smartphone's logo is of course Senku's logo, but with a bite taken out of it, similar to Apple's logo.

Spacecraft are built in clean rooms to ensure the rocket is not contaminated in any way, either from bacteria or dust particles. It's a controlled environment.
Senku & Xeno are wearing what's known as bunny suits. If you're going to look them up, don't forget the keyword "NASA".


The Apollo 11 cockpit barely had any screens, whereas SpaceX's Dragon is mostly touchscreens. There's advantages and disadvantages to both designs, but SENKU 11's design is closest to the Space Shuttle orbiter, but with the Multi-function Electronic Display System (MEDS) upgrade.

Watching Twister and I finally just learned that the SGI laptops were fake:

This was nowhere more evident than with the SGI "laptops," which of course didn't exist. With the tireless dedication and help of Dan Evanicky at SGI, we were able to design and build two different fake laptop shells around the SGI Corona LCD flatscreen displays, with seven functional and seven dummy cases for each design, we had a handful to take care of; each "laptop" had a powerful custom backlight run off a separate 12-volt DC power supply and multiple cables which ran back off the set (often through mud and puddles) to the Indy CPUs which fed them.”

A Color LCD (part 1)
Many years ago, I pulled an LCD out of a GPS unit from the days before cars and smartphones having navigation features. This LCD is a color LCD with a backlight. It’s a very different technology, and much more challenging to interface to. I can’t even find a proper datasheet for the module.

There are datasheets available for modules with similar part numbers. Based on the circuitry in the above picture, this looks like the closest pinout:
B&W LCD modules usually have a built-in charge pump to generate their needed voltages. Unfortunately, the datasheet also says this module needs those voltages supplied externally, and they’re a bit weird.
VDH: +8.3–+8.7 V @ 3.3 mA
VGH: +16.2–+17.0 V @ 0.23 mA
VGL: −8.35–−8.0 V @ 0.17 mA
VCC: +2.5–+3.3 V @ 0.22 mA (this is actually a normal voltage)
Fortunately, I don’t have to design and build a boost circuit myself; you can Just Buy voltage boost modules easily from many places. Getting a module to generate that negative voltage, however, is a lot harder. But it turns out that charge pump chips are A Thing you can Just Buy on Digikey. Sadly, charge pump chips tend to have fairly low output current capability, so while charge pumps could produce the high voltage for the backlight, it would require several and be kind of awkward.
So last week and this week, I finally sat down and learned enough about PIO on the Pi Pico to produce suitable timing signals for the module.
Great! I have a power circuit, I have logic signals, I have a suitable connector, now to see if I can display a picture. Well, one problem: I haven’t built something to hold the LCD. I don’t have a 3D printer, nor any CAD skills, so tonight’s project is to design in Adobe Illustrator a case for the module made of cardstock.

Robots who act like 90s laptops. Yeah they still work, but they had to have their hard drive swapped out. They can't be used portably anymore because their original batteries are long dead and no one makes replacements anymore. They have memory issues when they first wake up because their cmos battery died, and leaked, and the corrosion means they can't hear out of their right ear anymore.
They can't interact with the modern world without some assistive devices, because they were built in an age of dial up modems. They don't know what ethernet is, let alone wifi or 5g. But they're still kicking! Their vision may be a little blurry, they've got an old LCD with some backlight problems, but they manage.
They just need to be careful. Their plastic is getting brittle in their old age. They're not worried about the yellowing, of course. They could try retrobriting it but they consider it a badge of honor. It shows they've been around a while.
