Lemon Blueberry Shortbread
A Lady Ruth Charity Zine fic, featuring art from @letraspal
Summary:
Two afternoons of learning to cook a family recipe, thirty years apart.
Part 1: Cooking with Lucy
Tumblr media
Ruth
“No, darling, don’t cut the blueberries!”
Lucy drops the slim knife and pulls her hands back in startlement. At eight years old, I’ve only just started letting her cut things, and then only soft fruits with my dullest knife.
“Why not, mummy?” she asks. “We cut the blueberries last week!”
I sigh and smile. This is part of it. This passing on of hard won knowledge. That the methods that suit one occasion aren’t meant to be applied to another. This is the reason that I was so thrilled when Lucy decided she wanted to learn to cook. Thrilled and relieved.
It’s been far more difficult, being a mother, than I ever envisioned when Andrew and I set out on this journey together. I’d thought that my girl would be much like I was; fond of home comforts and domestic pursuits. I thought I’d wile away many a happy hours sewing or cleaning or crafting with my daughter.
Well, best laid plans and all that.

Well hello, friends. I am emerging from my cave of existential dread to remind you all that submissions for the Lady Ruth Charity Zine organized by @skeedelvee are due today! Here's a little peek at one of the fics I'm submitting:
***
Simon
“You know there are recipes on the internet, right, Snow?”
I huff and turn to wipe my hands on a tea towel hanging off one of the drawer handles.
“And if you use an online recipe, you can check the reviews and see if it actually works, and if people liked it, and–”
Baz stops abruptly with an undignified squeak, because I’ve grabbed him by the hips and lifted him off the worktop.
“Snow!” he protests, wrapping his ridiculously long legs around me and clinging to my shoulders.
I grin.
“You could have just asked me to move.”
“Didn’t want to interrupt,” I say, carrying Baz out of the kitchen, “and besides, I prefer a more hands-on approach.”
***
I have been tagged many times over the past few weeks, and I'm extremely grateful for each and every one. I love seeing your wips, y'all are truly brilliant and wonderful and I thank you for not giving up on me <3 Here are some tags back to kick off your Wednesday :) @palimpsessed @martsonmars @tea-brigade @krisrix @aristocratic-otter @stardustasincocaine @ivelovedhimthroughworse and @ionlydrinkhotwater

Welp. I’ve cracked open ye ol’ tablet this past week-because guess who’s doing some arts for a very special Lady Ruth Charity Zine??
Tumblr media
No Brian Cranston! Not you!
( you’re looking decidedly fabulous by the way. )
Me!
Its a bit on the sad end of looks at the moment (ie. in progress) as you see :
Tumblr media
Hopefully it’ll land somewhere along the lines of this picture in terms of finish:
Tumblr media
And since i did that like 2-3 years ago and haven’t done a-lot with the iPad in terms drawing… good luck to me.
In other news- i got called a pill today (still unsure of this is good or bad but eh ) and yesterday my daughter fell asleep in a grocery cart after a full day of dance and preschool.
Tumblr media
It was picture day and she decided that fancy dress was a must. And despite my protests to change once pictures were done, i found her sitting in the dirt with her dino boots and fancy skirt covered in dirt/ sand, pouring more dirt on her legs. My perfect little dirt gremlin. 🥰.
Anyways hope you’re feeling hydrated, well rested and hungry for this zine!
Love ya all !!

Everything you need to know about the Lady Ruth's Recipes charity zine:
What is it?
It's a Carry On themed charity zine supporting Planned Parenthood! There are over 20 recipes (submitted by people within the fandom) and each recipe is accompanied with either a fic or a piece of art (and sometimes both!) that features the food from the recipe. It will be available in digital form only.
The stories and art cover a wide range of characters and relationships from the Carry On universe. And the entirety of the content is rated G or T.
When does it come out?
The zine will come out on December 1st, 2023. Pre-orders will be open from now until the release date. The zine will also be available for 4 weeks after that date. After December 31st we will no longer be fulfilling orders, so if you want a copy, get it before it's gone!
How do I order a copy?
We're asking people to make their donations directly to Planned Parenthood (or your country's equivalent for reproductive care services, if that is easier). After doing so, send a screenshot with proof of your donation to [email protected] and your pre-order will be submitted! A minimum donation of $20 USD is required, but you are welcome to donate more. The minimum donation is $10 for the final 2 days of December! If you are buying copies for more than just yourself, please note that in your email and list out the extra email addresses that those copies should be sent to.
Who contributed to the zine?
We have many contributors that made this whole project possible! We'll be teasing everyone's work in the weeks leading up to the release of the zine, but here's the big list of everyone involved!

The Agency of Visible Women
The Agency of Visible Women is a fictional institution made flesh for the period 17 February to 14 April 2018 at Beecroft Art Gallery, Southend.
At the Agency of Visible Women we aim to explore the ways that we can address Women’s concerns for their visibility even within the intersects of our feminist communities.
We carry out important work at the Agency and our members represent the breadth of our expertise through their extensive department roles.
You may find your first point of contact at the Agency will be with our Human Resources Officer, Fanny Von Beaverhausen. During office hours Fanny can discuss your concerns about your visibility as a woman or femme. Out of hours you are welcome to relax in Fanny’s office as you watch Agency approved infomercial ‘Blips and Lips’.
Should your interests lie in Public Relations, Amani AlThuwaini’s work addresses public misconceptions about the agency of Middle Eastern Women through the medium of traditional embroidery and poetry.
If you’re concerned about more down to earth things (literally), you can head to our Highways and Maintenance Officer Lu Williams to examine her proposed solutions for public highway drainage in her series of exquisite (wo)manhole covers.
Or perhaps you’d like to View Eliza Soroga’s proposal for effective Pedestrian Management in her collaboration with B Hanusova in the short film entitled ‘Breakfast’?
Alternatively our Assistant Architect Dana AlJouder can lead you on a haunting tour through Singapore’s high rise development HDB, where she brings the functional and monotonous to life with her presence.
In our online resource department you’ll find our Data Analyst Damien Robinson. Here Damien calculates the unpaid labour that women perform and produces beautiful visualisations based on that analysis of data.
Overseeing the online presence of women falls under the remit of Digital Content Curator, Stefania Woznarowycz. Woznarowycz works hard to challenge the male centric view of women through careful digital corruption of stereotypical imagery of women online.
Hard at work in the public eye, Cultural Advisor Elsa James addresses a televised reply to Ron Liddle’s infamous claim that the African Caribbean communities in London possess no culture but violence, goat curry and rap music.
Perhaps you’re finding yourself a little tired after visiting all these departments. ‘Pause’ and replenish yourself with Emma Edmondson the Agency’s favourite Tea Lady, where making is a way to disengage from the catastrophic world events that take place around us.
After your break you can take a stroll over to our Botanist Leyla Pillai. Here you can examine Pillai’s research specimens in close detail.
From here you might like to pay a visit to Hygiene Facilitator Charlotte Hamilton, where frivolous self care and social media get cleaned up with these large scale bath bomb portraits. They’re scented, too!
The serious matters of childcare and motherhood can be sensitively explored with our Parent/Teacher Associate Kim Ralston. She puts her craft skills to good use to understand the problems of motherhood and it’s impact on women’s bodies.
If you’ve the time for a stop with our caretaker Ruth Jones, you can examine how to take space, share space and take care as a woman.
And don’t forget to exit through the gift shop, where you can find Agency made paraphernalia to help you be more visible as a woman.
The Agency of Visible Women takes its role in the community seriously and has partnered up with the non-fictional charity the Essex Feminist Collective. Any donations made by visitors will go to a zine making workshop for survivors of sexual abuse at Southend-on-Sea Rape Crisis.
The Agency of Visible Women
17 February – 14 April 2018 At Beecroft Art Gallery Victoria Avenue, Southend on Sea, Essex, SS2 6EX Open Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 5pm

Thank y'all for not forgetting me even as I've been too swamped in work to reply back! I've finished my replies now and I feel justified in posting some of my own WIP stuff, but first, thank you to all y'all who tagged me in the last two weeks:
@basiltonbutliketheherb, @cutestkilla, @artsyunderstudy, @yeonjunenby, @bookish-bogwitch, @ivelovedhimthroughworse, @erzbethluna, @whogaveyoupermission, @moodandmist, @ionlydrinkhotwater, @larkral, @fatalfangirl, @prettylightsbigcity, @whatevertheweather, @nightimedreamersghost, @johnwgrey, @tea-brigade, @ileadacharmedlife, @facewithoutheart you're all amazing!
I've got lots of words, because I write in bits to take breaks from my work, so I'll paste them under the cut, cause this'll be huge.
From fic #1 for the Lady Ruth Charity Zine:
I’ve barely opened my mouth to say his name when Baz is upon me. He sweeps me up into his arms and gives me an extremely thorough and expert kiss. His mouth tastes like peppermint, not blood. Of course Baz would take tooth cleaning supplies on a vampire hunt, the nerd.
The kiss goes on far longer than is probably appropriate for midday in front of my grandmother. He takes me apart with his mouth, and I’m at risk of developing an extremely inappropriate physical response. All of Baz’s kisses are like that, these days. I taught him everything he knows about kissing, and now the student has become the master.
I may swoon.
From fic #2 for the Lady Ruth Charity Zine:
I peruse the recipe again, for the third time, and I can’t figure out what there is in the ingredients that would make the brownies turn purple. That leaves only one possibility.
“Violet!” I shout.
“Yes, daddy?” my little girl asks, appearing like magic from under the kitchen table.
“Did you add something to the brownies?” I try to keep my tone gentle, but I’m exhausted and frazzled, and I’m sure that shows in my voice, because Violet’s face falls into a pout.
“They were ugly, daddy! All brown and lumpy. I wanted them to be pretty for the cake sale!”
I rub at the spot between my eyes where my family is definitely causing me premature wrinkles. “Show me what you put in the batter, Violet.”
From my potential 2023 COTTA fic:
His familial library has got to be the eighth wonder of the world. Bookshelves line the room floor to ceiling. That might not seem like much, but the room is the size of a dance hall, and the ceiling is at least three stories high. There are actual sliding ladders you have to climb to get to books on upper shelves.
While I gaze around, starry eyed, Basil strolls over to a record player placed on what must be an Edwardian end table. He pulls a record out of a paper sleeve and puts it on the turntable. The music that emerges from the speakers is pretty. And somehow familiar, though I couldn’t tell you where I’ve heard it before.
“Is that the record you told me about?” I ask, diverted from my fascination with the book wonderland around me.
Baz nods and hands me the paper sleeve. “Yeah. That’s his picture on the front. I ran into him again, did I tell you? I found out his name. It’s–
“Simon,” I whisper as I run one finger over a beloved face pictured on a piece of cardboard.
From Raising Dragons:
I do enjoy the Tate even if Simon and I get some very confused looks. Or, I should say, I do. Because I don’t bother to hide the fact that I’m chatting with Simon, but with his camouflage, nobody can see him. We considered using a disguise spell or a ‘Nothing To See Here’, but I wasn’t sure my spells would last the whole time, and Simon’s dragon invisibility is pretty much infinite now, so long as he doesn’t actively wish to look like himself again.
So I look like some lunatic, talking to thin air.
I don’t care. The opinions of these people don’t matter a whit to me. All I care about is my lovely boyfriend, who is strolling by my side, commenting amusingly on art that I know he despises. I’m frequently convulsed with laughter at his incredulity at what can be called ‘art’, but I had the foresight to cast a “Children Should Be Seen, But Not Heard” on the pair of us, so no passerby hears two voices where there should be one.
Of course, that means I look like I’m speaking inaudibly to noone. Well, it’s not like it makes me look any crazier.
And finally, from Playing With Fire, Treading Thin Ice:
I meet Baz’s cousin Dev and Dev’s lover (and apparently Baz’s best friend), Niall. Dev slaps me on the back after Baz’s introduction and crows, “Thank you!”
“For what?” I’m baffled.
“For dating my cousin and therefore making sure I’m not the only queer Pitch here today,” he laughs. “You can’t imagine the pressure this takes off of me. You’re a lifesaver, my friend.”
I’m genuinely confused, and I take advantage of Baz’s trip to the loo to question his cousin.
“Shouldn’t the pressure be the same? I mean, why should Baz’s coming out make things easier on you?”
Dev shakes his head and throws an arm over my shoulder. “You have much to learn, young Padawan. I may be a Pitch,” Dev confides, “but Baz is THE Pitch. His queerness is of much more note than mine because his position in the family is much higher than mine. Therefore everyone will be staring at and gossiping about you, and Niall and I will finally have some peace. So thank you,” he concludes dramatically.
“You’re welcome,” I say sourly.
Who's left to tag? And I can't believe that I actually beat midnight.
Tagging @fight-surrender, @angelsfalling16, @bazzybelle, @carryonsimoncarryonbaz, @dragoneggos, @foolofabookwyrm-activated (happy birthday!) , @giishu, @gekkoinapeartree, @krisrix, @kherub, @messofthejess, @otherworldsivelivedin, @raenestee, @subparselkie, @technetiumai, @urban-sith, @you-remind-me-of-the-babe

It's late, I'm tired. I've written a lot, but I'm just going to give you six sentences from each of my Lady Ruth Zine fics as a little taste.
Thank you to @bookish-bogwitch, @whogaveyoupermission, @you-remind-me-of-the-babe, @larkral, @artsyunderstudy, @ionlydrinkhotwater, @ivelovedhimthroughworse, @confused-bi-queer, @nightimedreamersghost, @palimpsessed and @erzbethluna for the tags.
Zine fic #1:
Baz
Thank Crowley that I bought all those duplicate ingredients.
I can’t fathom why Lady Ruth said this was an easy recipe. This is the third batch I’ve tried. The first one, admittedly, failed through no fault of the recipe—it burnt to a crisp when I had to talk Ebb down off of the ceiling after Nat teased her to the point of tears.
The second batch smelt…funny. And not good funny.
Zine fic #2
Ruth
“No, darling, don’t cut the blueberries!”
“Why not, mummy?” she asks. “We cut the blueberries last week!”
I sigh and smile. This is part of it. This passing on of hard won knowledge. That the methods that suit one occasion aren’t meant to be applied to another.
It's far far too late for Sunday, so tag backs to all the folks above, and tags for Wednesday to @angelsfalling16, @bloodiedpixie, @carryonsimoncarryonbaz, @dragoneggos, @fatalfangirl, @facewithoutheart, @frjsti, @ileadacharmedlife, @johnwgrey, @krisrix, @prettylightsbigcity, @raenestee, @tea-brigade
