Studying Japanese at university. What’s it like?

I've just recently started my third year at university, so it has been two years I've been studying Japanese with a non-self study approach. And a lot of things have changed since then. 

When I was in middle school, right after my final exam, I decided to start studying Japanese, but there weren't many books and resources available in Italy in 2012. I was living in the countryside of a small city in Northern Italy and Milan was too far for me at that time! I had to rely on a little website and a couple of apps that I could download on my first smartphone. During high school I started to study some bit of Japanese during the summer, not much honestly, but I had a very solid foundation.

So in September 2017 my journey into the Italian academic system started and I was a bit scared. I had kanji class, grammar class and exercise class with a native teacher. During the first year I liked the organization a lot, and my native teacher structured the class in a way that was involving and guided me throughout the entire week, from Monday to Sunday. The results were satisfying.

But last year my native teacher changed and I felt completely lost (oh we started to have a classes of translation too, only in the first semester tho and 0 kanji classes). Well I'm still feeling a bit lost, but I think I've figured out a solid plan to achieve my goal: be able to speak Japanese.

Here's how my week is structured:

- MONDAY: japanese grammar class, translation of example sentences, revision of vocabulary
- TUESDAY: revision of kanji and vocabulary + flashcards 
- WEDNESDAY: exercise class + revision of vocabulary
- THURSDAY: exercise class + revision of kanji
- FRIDAY: revision of kanji and vocabulary
- SATURDAY OR SUNDAY: reading + revision 

The second year was a really tough one, but I was one of the lucky ones who was able to pass the exam at my first attempt, a huge satisfaction even tho I'm aware I have lots of empty spots in my brain about some parts of the syllabus. In fact during this last trimester of 2019, I will work hard to catch up with the things covered last year! It will be a rush, but I know it'll be worth it!
