APH Russia – Headcanons I
Tumblr media
I would like to point out that I originally wrote this before 24.02.2022 and didn’t publish this until now due to current event. Now I have decided just to go ahead these are low-budget anime characters that I’m talking about and f anybody who links this to ongoing geopolitical events
Is surprisingly proficient in German and French. Both were court languages of his at the one or the other point in history, his German also being spread amongst the wider populace and influencing Russian. Speaks both languages with a bit of an accent, yet if he puts enough effort in it, his accent can be nearly untraceable.
As for other languages – he is also fluent in Tatar and Mongolian, although in the later he is far better with speaking and listening than writing. This is also the case with all the other languages spoken in his territory. This is due to his past under the khans. As for English and Chinese – with both he tends to be on the very formal side, with his speech precise and usually devoid of slang and abbreviations. It is because he learned much of those two languages from literature or also scientific reports.
When it comes to Russian he can be very eloquent, having a preference for puns and other plays of words. Can and will criticise others for their grammar, although if he is public and in a formal setting, he would be more tactful and quiet about remarking it.
Has a penchant for literature and opera and plays. Visits the theatre regularly and knows all the ballets by heart. Personally keeps a small notebook where he critiques and rates books and performances. Sometimes he sends them in to a newspaper or an online site.
Writes poety in his free time and sends some of them to his sisters or humans that are close to him at the time. Can also recite all of Pushkin’s poems in his sleep.
Aside from that, he has a love for fairy tales. Not the sanitised, censored versions that Disney and the Grimm brother’s have made so popular, rather the cautionary tales as they were actually intended, The brutal versions where people suffer and suffer and suffer.
Else has written multiple essays and the human condition, often taking characters for classics to elaborate on his points. These are texts that near nobody has seen. Ivan has split them up and hidden them on his various properties.
Tumblr media
Has taken formal dance lessons in ballet and the classics. Loves to dance at balls and is surprisingly elegant while doing so for somebody his size. However, he really shies away from dancing tango, salsa and other dances where both partners get really close and even handsy with each other. If at all, he would have to be really close to his dance partner to even contemplate to doing the Latin American dances.
Other than that, he is also good when it comes to folk dances and possess enough stamina to dance dances such as the Barynya for hours. Has the appropriate leg muscles and flexibility.
Surprisingly, (or not) his dancing skills translate into his fighting style. Can go on for hours without taking any enhancements or sleeping, all while remaining smooth and precise in his movements, like they been choreographed and practised time and time again. He can make difficult movement seem easy.
For centuries he favoured combat with a sword. One of his favourite ones was a curved sabre – a kilij – that he stole as a war trophy from Turkey when the latter was the Ottoman empire. Later, he evolved to be a crack shot with the pistole – he got caught up in a lot of duels when they came into fashion. During the WWII, he was part of a tank crew. Due to the tight space of the T-34, he often suffered sore joints and cramps in his muscles. Also developed an especially thick skull during this time, both literally and metaphorically.
Ivan has participated in the making of multiple movies as an advisor. He makes sure that historical films are historically accurate. Seeing that Russia is big on war movies, Ivan has a lot to do.
Tumblr media
Additionally, he is quite a patron for the arts. He has multiple oil paintings in his old mansion. Personally, he paints either an impressionist art style or in the vividly coloured art styles that are native to Russia, such as Gzhel, Khokhloma and Zhostovo.
Adding on to that – there is nothing in his homes that is really plain. He has a sense for the aesthetically pleasing and even opulence. The woodwork is carved and whittled, the ceramic adorn with paintings and the metal work ornate. His living surroundings might have been a bit plainer during Soviet times, however I think he would have pulled a few strings that would have allowed him to keep his old possessions.

Daily Check-in: April 17, 2024 🎀
today was a decent day up until the end, when I got upset and emotional over some things and ended up crying again. I swear, I've cried the last 6 out of 7 nights, and I'm so tired of it. here's to hoping things finally get better soon because this emotional stuff is seriously affecting my productivity, motivation, and discipline.
🩷 What I Accomplished:
studied chapter 6 of Latin American Spanish on Busuu
listened to 3 podcast episodes in Spanish
completed and submitted my lab report and pre lab quiz, also did my pre lab notebook prep
went to my last chem lab for the semester
went to chem lecture
had a meeting with the Dietetic director to map out some classes for the upcoming semesters
washed dishes
attempted a phone call with my boyfriend for the first time in a week (relationship issues + long distance × love ÷ dating for 2 years = an emotional rollercoaster, and lots of frustration)
washed laundry, did not put away yet
scheduled a therapy session for tomorrow morning
completed a 7 minute pilates abs workout from Madeliene Abeid
completed the 11 minute wake up yoga from Yoga with Adriene
started to do the 5 min daily stretch from Pamela Reif but my dad called me so I didn't finish it
downloaded a pdf of a Spanish textbook
rescheduled my italki lesson because I need to study for chem
scheduled 2 study rooms to study for chem with my chem lab partner
completed the pre class assignment for chemistry
walked ~8k steps
🩷 Good Things That Happened:
saw my dad this morning, who then took me to the campus library a bit early (I love getting to see my dad, I don't get to see him too often since he lives on the opposite side of town)
passed my lab report and pre class assignment
finished my chem lab super fast
had pizza rolls for dinner (I needed something quick and simple cause I've been tired)
got more practice with the chemistry lecture content
woke up esrly enough to do my morning routine
did a complete night routine, including skincare (-didn't read tho, couldn't decide on a book )
more good things happened, I just honestly can't remember them right now. but today was not a bad day.
💗 Stuff For Thursday:
psyc doc appointment
therapy appointment
supplemental chemistry class hours
make sure I'm caught up on homework
apply to/write essays for some scholarship applications
check hours worked if possible to determine next week's paycheck
study Spanish!!! dedicate a good chunk of time to it
do my morning and night routine as best as possible
Thursday is definitely going to be an interesting day, thats for sure. I don't feel as tho I'll have as much to do, but I'm going to find things to do, like studying my Spanish, etc.
til next time lovelies 🩷
ps. check out my depop shop <3
💕 Song of The Day -
Le Sserafim - Antifragile
this has been a long time fave of mine

y’know that annoying thing when, like, a 20th-century wildlife illustration, especially those produced for either children or a generalized US audience, would inaccurately depict a bunch of stereotypical “jungle animals” together in one scene, even though the creatures do not live anywhere near each other in real life? like, placing a tiger (from South Asia or East Asia) in the same scene as an anaconda or macaw (from the Americas).
certain of the date, due to the location. i was eight years old. i’m watching Predator (1987; excellent score composed by Alan Silvestri).
with an adult family member. (too young for a viewing? maybe. my favorite movies at the time were the classic Hollywood Gothic monster films, so parental figures were lenient.)
at this age, i carried notebooks. era before search engines. go to school early, sit in the library, open books, take notes on creatures. specifically reptiles, dinosaurs, sharks, bugs, and their habitat. i was really into habitat and geographic distribution ranges. had a bunch of field guides, would just stare at the maps. whenever Attenborough, Nat Geo, Wild Kingdom/Wild Discovery, whatever other nature programming was on TV, sit on the floor and take notes.
so, at the time, already had a pet peeve: creatures being depicted blatantly out-of-place. in a book, movie, or whatever media. and the big one? “jungle” scenes. y’know, tropical rainforest scenes. like when an illustration or story would show jaguars (the Americas) with gorillas (Africa). or toucan (the Americas) with orangutan (Southeast Asia). or Boa constrictor (the Americas) with chimpanzee (Africa). or capybara (the Americas) near a rhinoceros (Africa and South/Southeast Asia).
i’d  seen this so many times that i, at that age, thought of it as a “common” mistake or annoyance. like a child’s growing understanding, a glimpse of how the US just generalized all tropical environments. anything unusual or strange, especially from the humid jungle, was simply exoticized, and jumbled together in the psyche, all vague threats hiding in an Orientalist jungle.
so Predator (1987) is set in Central America. playing on Reagan-era fear-mongering about Latin American “drug lords” and US xenophobia and racism, there is some kind of vague Latine(?)-Indigenous(?) resistance movement that is somehow “bad” and the CIA contracts the good guys to, uh, go make things right or whatever. early in the movie, the hyper-masculine aggressive military commando protagonists are making homophobic jokes and tracking the bad guys or whatever. they don’t yet know they’re up against an extraterrestrial visitor. the protagonists talk about tracking “the guerillas”.
except, to my ears, as an eight year old child, i think they’re referring to “gorillas”.
so i shake my head, and say to my parental figure something like: “nah, come on, they are in tropical rainforest in Central America. no gorillas here. gorillas actually live in Africa. lazy generalization.”
and my parental figure was like: “good, very proud of you for knowing that, but actually, they’re not talking about apes. they’re using a different word: guerillas.” and they kinda explained how “guerilla” was basically meant as shorthand for, like, resistance movements.
so i thought about it. and was like: “ohhhh, so Arnold Schwarzeneggar and these other military clowns are actually the bad guys? invading Central America? shooting up the rainforest habitat with a mini-gun? so the titular Predator creature is humbling them? the Predator is actually the hero?”

books can describe a person, or can they?
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.express.co.uk/entertainment/books/617196/Chelsea-footballer-author-Frank-Lampard-favourite-books/amp
omg, i had never seen this particular book rec list of his--i LOVE this, here are my thoughts
of mice and men--he cites this as one of his favorite books a lot and i'm just like jeez--i hated this book when i had to read it for 7th grade english, it's so fucking depressing, okay emo boy
tom's midnight garden--i've never heard of this but this sounds like the kind of kids' book i would have really enjoyed...something old school and quietly imaginative, it's sweet that he includes it
the making of modern britain-- "I have an interest in politics and history and I’m proud of being British" adfkad;jdfk;gkdlj this killed me... also "My father began life in post-war east London and this helped me to imagine him growing up." frank lampard go 5 minutes without talking about your dad challenge
A BOOK ABOUT ABRAHAM LINCOLN? *needle scratch* nerd alert! "Americans don’t expect you, as an Englishman and a footballer, to have knowledge of their history so it’s good for dinner party conversations." this threw me...i highkey love that he recommended a book on abraham lincoln lol i think when he said his favorite subjects in school were history and latin he wasn't lying
andrea pirlo's book...i like that he's reading it while playing with pirlo at NYCFC, that's cute lol
a crime/spy/terrorist thriller? "I love to read crime thrillers when I’m travelling with the team and this is one I didn’t want to put down." omg this reminds me of some other interview where he talks about everyone on the chelsea bus playing video games and him writing in his little notebook !
i feel like you can legit analyze these choices so hard hahaha and also if you know anything about franko they make a lot of sense

I feel like dark academia is so focused on Americans that there are stuff that have no sense to a European, what do I mean? Easy, for example I just say a pin that is a repost from here, Tumblr, it said "study the history of the ancient Rome", here in Europe or at least in the countries that have been under that rule that is something so basic, you start learning it at age 7 or 8, it's nothing grand.
"Try learning latin" girl that was a subject at school, and has been compulsory in my country for YEARS, like all my teachers had studied latin, nothing big you know?
These things seem so foreign and stranger and exotic, so cult and majestic to the American eye, that has been cultivated in such a strange way, so isolated historically, I may not be very knowledgeable of all the presidents and so on, but I know more about America and it's history than most Americans on European history.
"Learn about classical composers and their lives", girl, that's how I learned to make PowerPoints, you start learning that in music class in 4th grade or earlier and they make you write about them and color pictures of them in your notebook.
Stuff that seems so basic to me is the nurture of Dark Academia, which at the same time is eurocentric in it's aesthetic mostly, in the buildings, in the art, in the music but is curious about the European culture in an unequivocally American eye.
This is exactly why the aesthetic is tiring to some extent, it looks the same, it's really homogeneous which is kind of what you seek in an aesthetic but that makes it loose the magic and spark that comes with nuance, that is one of the reasons why I love Desi Dark Academia, or Dark Academia focused east Asia or Africa ( I haven't seen much African Dark Academia but it's really interesting, look it up). They are so culturally different and bring so much value to Dark academia as a whole and are often overlooked because the aesthetic "isn't about them" which is so wrong, Dark Academia is for learning and feeling cool while you are at it.

When Astrology Meets Aesthetics
I can't seem to get away from the exploration of aesthetics or just general navel-gazing about how I present myself to the world in my day-to-day life. So I've decided to lean in and continue the exploration until I bore myself to death and move on.
In this post, I engage in pairing astrology with aesthetics and where I think my lifestyle reflects my astrological vibration. (So if you're into aesthetics, but not astrology or astrology, but not aesthetics, this post may not interest you.)
A quick note: Some of the traits, colors, or activities I do on a regular basis aren't mentioned below because it's something I think all of the aesthetics I embody are known for, so it doesn't really belong to just one of them. (For example, eating in or hanging out in cafes while reading, writing or people watching. I feel that activity really belongs to all of the aesthetics below.)
Enough introductory explanation, let's dive in ...
Pisces Sun

It involves a more cozy, almost autumnal view of urban areas and emphasizes having a cultured lifestyle of visiting museums, cafés, and thrift shopping with a laid-back attitude and admiration for the music and visual culture of that community.)

Can you tell more about 'Chłopiec z gitarą' but Luisco, fanfiction from Spanish lessons, Dark!Avalor, and all of marvel ones?
Aasjkajsaksj sure
"Chłopiec z gitarą" as you probably know is a Polish song but I'll link it for the foreigners. The singer basically sings how what she wants in a boy(friend) is just for him to play the guitar and since some of the lyrics are literally "Even if there was/A prince or a higher noble/I'd never join my life with him/Unless besides the title he'd have/A guiter and would play it" and we know that both Francisco and Luisa play the guitar, and he's a noble... I've connected the dots. And imagine how funny it'd be if Luisa had previously brushed Francisco off as just "some pompous noble" but later fell in love because of his music skills?
Luísa huffed, still fuming from her interaction with the previous client. She took a deep breath, straightened her apron and finally answered: "Some noble. Extremely pompous and extremely irritating." "A noble? What did he want? He didn't look exactly like a client." "Yeah, because he wasn't. He just… came to invite me to tonight's dance."
"Fanfiction from Spanish lessons" is called this way because I've started writing it on the front of my Spanish notebook XD The core idea is that Luisa is cooking a recipe from a cookbook she has after her mother, who got it after her mother and it brings back a lot of her memories. At one point though, Esteban enters the kitchen, at first worried because she's crying, but later asks if he can help her cook. Of course Luisa doesn't want to agree at first, but she was just reminescing the times when her grandchildren were little and everything was easier and so convinced by nostalgia she lets him stay. After a moment Isa and Elena also find themselves in the kitchen and finally, when the food is almost ready Francisco enters as well, absolutely offended that they're spending family time without it! It was supposed to follow a recipe for a dish I've found online (since I sadly don't know any Latin American dishes first hand) and intertwined with many, many retrospections.
Okay this fragment is a little long but I'm so proud of this scene.
"I'll miss living here," she said to her mother who had just entered the room. "You both will always be welcome here mijita, it'll always be your home," she said, pulling her daughter into a half hug. "But now you should go, and start your own." Luisa unwittingly rubbed the wedding ring, still so unfamiliar on her finger but so pleasant. "And as your abuela used to say," her mom continued, smiling softly at her. "There isn't a good home…" "... without good food" Luisa finished. She could hear her abuela's voice in her head. "That's why I want you to have this." Her mom broke from the hug and pulled out the notebook seemingly out of thin air. Luisa gasped and covered her mouth with both her hands. "Mamá, I can't take it…" "Your abuela started this notebook when she married your abuelo, then gave it to me when I married your papá," She explained, putting the notebook in Luisa's hands. "Now it's your turn to have it." Luisa closed her in a tight hug. "I love you, mamá." "I love you too, mijita."
As for "Dark!Avalor"... this is one story I'm almost sure I won't ever write x) The basic idea spawned once on the discord server, as a fun Reverse/Dark AU and honestly brainstorming it all was extremely fun, but when one would try to actually write it... well I realized the story would be too dark so headcanons in the groupchat it shall stay.
Thank you for this second ask! I'll put the marvel ones in a seperate post, cause this one is already extremely long.

Carmen Teresa's house rocks to the beat of Salsa music as grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and neighbors from all over Latin America arrive in their Silver Spring, Maryland home. Together, they cook, gossip, play dominos, dance, and enjoy the warmth of this special New Year's Day celebration.
When Dona Josepha gives Carmen Teresa a blank notebook as a present, the guests suggest that she fill it with stories that they remember from their own childhoods. And from there, everyone from this charming cast of characters has a unique story to tell.
When everyone is finished, Carmen Teresa has her own idea of how she will fill her book. She has enjoyed everyone's stories. But since she loves to cook, and each storyteller has mentioned foods associated with the particular occasion in their stories, she decides to create a cookbook and write down all of their recipes. And, of course, recipes are included at the end of the book.
The stories and recipes represent five Latin American countries, including Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina, Guatamala, and Peru.

Complementary colors: Orange
The stamped square draws emphasis to the orange and blue which are each other's complementary colors. There's a salt shaker, an orange, and part of a box of crackers. The blue creates shadow and dimension while the orange emphasizes.
Analogous colors: Kleenex tissue box.
The range of green hues in this box depicts the different colors of different types of plants. There's a yellow- green, a blue-green, green, and a darker shade of green. The use of these analogous colors are also used to separate each branch and leaf from each other.
Cool colors: glitch/animal poster
This poster is predominantly green and variations of the color. It has hints of yellow here and there but it also has hints of purple and blue in the glitching effect. I believe that the use of green is mainly to depict nature in the animals, but the hints of purple and blue in addition to the variations of the blue-green accents, it's meant to depict technology and the pixels of lights that make up a screen and its display.
Warm colors: Corn nuts
This packaging is using strictly reds and yellows. Its flavour is barbecue, which is typically a brown-red color and since corn is typically yellow, I believe that they wanted to keep that aesthetic of warm colors to convey a flavor and to relate it to the origin of the ingredients.
Contrast in color: MSU dialogues
This poster uses color to convey a contrast by using a bright and light color such as yellow as its background but adding big, bold, dark green letters to emphasize what the message is. The bright yellow definitely catches your eye but the dark shade of green is what you read first without straining your eyes. The dialogue bubbles are different colors to add dynamic to the poster but they range in opacity and even in gradience.
Gestalt principles: Stamped notebook
This cover has a few gestalt principles including closure and continuation. Some of the cloud-like shapes are overlapping with other elements but the stars and lines inside give the illusion that they are continuing. There's some lettering at the bottom-right corner that depict closure even in the absence of certain parts of the letter.
Figure-ground relationship: Asymmetry
This piece of art really plays with the subject and the background. Its body blends and distorts into the surrounding elements such as the background and the asymmetrical shapes. But even so you can distinguish there's a person/subject in the focus and you can place the hands and feet that gives you a better perception of where the rest of the body lies.
Historical: Latinx Film Festival
This poster has a red color background with yellow typography which is generally associated to colors associated with Latin America. Many past posters about a Latin film festival are usually using a similar typography and similar colors. For example, the 2022 San Diego Latino film festival or the AFI Latin American film festival poster which uses similar reds and yellows.

More than a year later it might be but Chapter 2 of my houseshare au is now up!
****
‘Man in flowerbeds.’
Alison frowned at the spreadsheet in front of her. No amount of tweaking, no amount of ‘Well, maybe we can cut back on-’ was helping. Even changing it all to a fancy font hadn’t helped. Would a more naturally mathematical brain come in handy at times like this? Perhaps, she reflected, it might make things worse: perhaps someone with a more mathematical brain would just be able to see even more clearly how very expensive it was to maintain a huge house that also happened to be falling to pieces.
She and Mike assumed that inheriting it with rent-paying tenants in situ would have made things easier.
‘Man still in flowerbeds.’
They had been wrong.
Perhaps they could find a way to make friends with the gas meter man and wrangle a reduction in price?
‘Man in-’
‘Oh my god, Robin! You’re meant to be checking the mouse traps I put down!’
Robin looked back at her placidly from where he was sitting cross-legged on the floor beside the windowseat, a plate of half eaten toast beside him, his shaggy brow just level with the window sill.
‘But there a man in flower beds.Thought you might want to know.’
‘No there isn’t.’
‘Is.’ Robin took another bite of toast. ‘Crush heuchera. Lady B not be pleased.’
‘What?’
‘Coral bells.’
Alison looked at him blankly. She had assumed, when first meeting Robin, that the main difficulty in communicating with him would stem from the obvious language barrier: one person raised with Latin, of all things, as their first language due to a misguided but very well meaning set of hippy-scholar parents and one person who, due to skiving most of GCSE French, could speak only English.
It turned out that was the least of it.
‘Nice plant,’ Robin explained patiently. ‘Also got cut himself on Cortaderia Selloana.’
‘Hm?’
‘Sharp plant.’
‘Oh.’
There was a pause and Robin took another bite of toast.
‘Man still in flowerbed.’
Alison rolled her eyes.
‘Oh yeah? Like how Megan Markle was at the Co-Op last week?’
Robin nodded sagely.
‘She there for stock up on marmite before fly back to America. I tell her, good for you, no put up with press intrusion. You deserve better, you go be happy with orange man, make many babies and give stupid American names, no worry what people say-’
‘Right ok.’ Then her eyes drifted towards the window. ‘Oh my god, there’s a man in the garden!’
‘Tell him be careful for heuchera!’ Robin called after her helpfully. Then he went back to pushing toast crumbs into the heating vent. His mouse family would breakfast well later.
*
‘Excuse me!’
Alison strode across the lawn and waved a hand at the man crouched beside the low garden wall, camera in hand.
‘Can I help you?’
He smiled amiably and nodded up at her.
‘No, you’re alright love. I’m champion here.’
‘Are you aware you’re in my front garden?’
The man squinted.
‘Is this Button House?’
‘-Yes’.
‘Then yes!’ He beamed at Alison cheerfully as if this was information they should both be pleased about.
‘WHY are you in my front garden?’
The man blinked at her.
‘Well, I’m waiting for him to come out, aren’t I? The besmirched back-bencher. The tainted Tory- Oh that’s good, I should write that down…’ He began scrabbling in his pockets and pulled out a grimey notebook. ‘Got a pen, love? He’s got to come out sooner or later and I’m happy here until he does… unless you want to maybe give him a little nudge for my sake, eh? Let me get home early enough that the Missus doesn’t give me grief again?’
‘What? No!’ Alison suppressed the urge to smack his notebook out of his meaty hand. ‘Look, this is private property: I could call the police!’
‘Yeah, s’pose you could do that, aye.’ The man didn’t look in the least concerned and Alison bristled.
‘I could!’
‘I know, love.’ The man shook his head pityingly. ‘But you know how hard it is these days- chronically underfunded, you call them and then you have to be put through and then they have to arrange to send someone round and a big, out of the way place like this…. Well, you know they’d end up getting lost, then you’d have them calling, you’d have to spend ages on the phone directing them and by the time they get here… Well, I’ll probably have packed for the day!’ He patted her hand reassuringly. ‘Do yourself a favour, love- save yourself the hassle!’
‘I could just make you leave! By force!’
‘Could you? I’m a big bloke, me- I don’t mean that in a threatening way!’ he added hastily. ‘I’d never, you know, fight a lass. But I’m a heavy bugger to try to drag and you’re a skinny little thing so-’
‘Or my husband could!’
‘Mmmm.’ The man glanced across the lawn. ‘That him?’
Alison followed his gaze and sighed. Did Mike and Obi really need to have picked this moment to be trying out the sumo suits?
‘He could! He really could!’
‘I’m sure he could, love.’ The photographer gave her a gentle smile. ‘I’m sure he could.’
*
Alison vented her feelings by slamming the front door as hard as she could. A shower of plaster chips drizzled down on her.
‘Oh it looks like it’s snowing! In May!’ Kitty looked up in delight from her Leaving The House checklist (permanently blu tacked to the front door after Kitty had locked herself out for the fifth or sixth time and painstakingly updated by the others after every new incident: it now stretched over two sheets of paper, beginning with #1 Check You Have Your Keys, continuing on to cover any and all electrical items and taps poentilly left turned on, and ending with #13 (in the Captains neat printing, added only two days ago) Check You Haven’t Put Your Keys Down While Attending to Items 1-12). ‘Do it again!’
Alison opened her mouth to respond but was saved from the potential back-and-forth of Kitty pleading and pouting by a brisk knock, leaving her to wonder if she’d accidentally slammed the door in someone’s face.
If it was the photographer asking for a drink of water or to use the loo, she decided she was absolutely going to say no.
But it wasn’t the photographer.
A sharp faced woman stood on the doorstep, clad in black leather and holding a motorcycle helmet under one arm.
‘Um hello?’

productive economy and the regional and intercontinental trades stemming from the archipelago. In their private undertakings, the employees of the Company —most of whom were peninsulares—set up important networks of collaboration with Philippine traders, and were active in the regional “country trade,” that is, the Western private trade in Asia, mostly British (Permanyer-Ugartemendia 2020, 128-130). Hispanics in Asia provided means of access to sources of silver and to Philippine credit, which helped in developing the Western trade in Canton and the opium traffic in particular. As will be shown in Permanyer’s article, Spaniards were heavily involved in the boom in the opium trade between India and China in the 1820s.Despite the commercial developments experienced during the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, the fait accompliforced the Philippines to reorient its economic model after the Latin American republics were established (Legarda 2002). In the process, the Philippines consolidated its integration in the Asian —and particularly Southeast Asian—economy (Elizalde 2020) while the trans-Pacific link became secondary. As shown in Permanyer’s article here introduced, right after the end of the Galleon in 1815 the trans-Pacific tradecontinued on behalf of the Philippine traders until 1821 (Legarda 2002; Pérez Lecha 2014; García Gimeno 2017), in an iteration of the secular route, where textiles were exchanged for silver —yet by the late 1830s textiles will be mostly British fabrics, and old imperial coins would eventually be replaced by new republican coins (Permanyer-Ugartemendia 2013, 365-366).7The problems in resuming the trans-Pacific trade from Manila prompted the Spanish traders to use Canton instead, yet this trade would becomesecondary in the redefinition of the 7Between 1826 and 1828, the wide circulation among Filipino merchants of independent Hispanic-America’s coin led the Manila Government tothe decision of countermarking them “habilitado por el Rey N.
