The Minotaur in the Labyrinth
The Minotaur in the Labyrinth stands as one of the ancient stories that has survived the test of time and continuously appears in mainstream entertainment. Most understand that this concept began with the story of Theseus of ancient Athens and how he navigated the labyrinth and slayed the beast within, but many don’t know the inspiration of this idea.
Nearly a millennia before Classical Greece rose to the height of its power (500-350 BCE) the two leading cultures of the Aegean Sea were the Mycenaeans on the mainland and the Minoans on modern day Crete, and it is on this island that we find the labyrinthian structures of Bronze age Greece.
The Bronze Age Palace at Knossos: Plan and Sections by British archaeologist Sinclair Hood and Canadian archaeologist William E, Taylor, Jr., was published as Supplementary Volume No. 13 of The British School at Athens in 1981. It shows the archaeological remains of one of the many Minoan Palaces. Though mostly destroyed and crumbling, we can still see the complex layout of halls and rooms that twist, turn, and abruptly end. Beginning with the excavations of Sir Arthur Evans in 1900, scores of theories have been raised about the purpose of such confounding architecture, from a form of defense to a means of controlling foreign visits.
Besides the confusing architecture, though no depictions of minotaurs were found, Minoan Palaces such as the one at Knossos did contained several pieces of art that depicted bulls. Upon further inspection, the symbol of the Bull was quite prominent throughout the ancient culture from sports, such as bull leaping, to religious sacrifice.
When looking to those who lived in the past, one should remember that we are not the only ones who inquired about archaeological remains. These ruins would’ve been seen by the Classical Greeks, but by that time their imaginations about the great Palaces and Bull iconography of the Minoan civilization was transformed into the myth of the Minotaur in the Labyrinth.

I remember when she told me
She cried in shame
I told her not to worry
We can do anything
I told her one day we’d be beautiful
And maybe we could start a band
‘cos I was born to sing
And she was born to dance

Thought I liked it but I don’t think I did. It was alright, where was josh? Why did he disappear? Also, the whole Gen situation still makes no sense to me. We hated her in the first movie and now we have to feel sorry for her? It’s a huge switch that makes no sense to me especially cause Peter doesn’t tell Laura Jean and I never thought about how Gen got the video of them in the hot tube but I guess she was meant to be doing the dirty with Peter. John was an interesting character but I never felt like he was going to get Laura Jean. Look, I loved the first movie and it reminded me of me as a teenager besides reading unrealistic love stories. I liked Stormzy, she was a good addition to the movie. To me, it was a skip through type movie. #toalltheboysivelovedbefore #toalltheboyspsistillloveyou #lovestory #romance #drama #laurajean #peterkavinsky #johnambrosemcclaren #johncorbett #irishblogger #irish https://www.instagram.com/p/B8uj5HAgn7o/?igshid=1rjlwqb9a9uly

The Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius
The Eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE remains one of the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Not only did the volcano destroy the economically powerful city of Pompeii, but Herculaneum, Oplontis, Stabiae were also buried and thus lost to the Roman Empire. The number of victims is unknown, but given the size of the four cities, estimates have reached over 18,000 individuals.
Today only one first-hand account of this horrific event survives in two letters from Pliny the Younger to the Roman historian Tacitus. They are preserved as letters 6.16 and 6.20 in the collected Epistles of Pliny. Among our holdings of the works of Pliny is this 3-volume set of the Epistles with William Melmoth’s 18th-century translation edited by Clifford Herschel Moore, and printed by the Harvard University Press in an edition of 405 copies for members of The Bibliophile Society, Boston, in 1925.
While the term ‘volcanic eruption’ evokes scenes of lava and fire, the reality is much more frightening. Curiously, there is no word for volcano in the Latin language. While ancient Romans were aware of the destructive power of volcanoes, there’s some debate about whether they were aware that Vesuvius was a volcano before its eruption. Signs of the eruption began back in 62CE with a great earthquake that caused much of the city to collapse. Smaller earthquakes continued over the next 15 years until one was accompanied by the rise of a column of smoke from Mt. Vesuvius in October 79 CE.
The hot gases that made up the column of smoke began to cool, darkening the sky, and not long after a rain of pumice began to fall, and after 15 hours ceilings began to collapse. Nevertheless, many residents chose to take shelter rather than flee. At 4am the first 500C pyroclastic surge barred down the volcano, burying Herculaneum. Six more of these surges occurred before the end of the eruption, destroying Pompeii, Oplontis, and Stabiae.
The 17-year old Pliny was in the port town of Misenum across the Bay of Naples from the volcano at the time. Pliny’s uncle, Pliny the Elder, commander of the Roman fleet at Misenum, launched a rescue mission and went himself to the rescue of a personal friend. The elder Pliny did not survive the attempt. In Pliny the Younger’s first letter to Tacitus, he relates what he could discover from witnesses of his uncle's experiences. In a second letter, he details his own observations after the departure of his uncle.
Mt. Vesuvius is still active and according to volcanologists, erupts about every 2000 years, which would be right about now. Who will be our next Pliny the Younger?
Our copy of The Epistles of Pliny is another gift from our friend and benefactor Jerry Buff.

Cascadia Grains Friday: Deconstructing Dinner at The London Plane
(Buckwheat, Spelt, Oats, Wheat and Quinoa) A paired dinner at the London Plane exploring the historical and nutritional aspects of PNW grown grains in celebration of the annual Cascadia Grains Conference. Featuring Chef Zarah Duncanson from The London Plane, Dr. Laurajean Lewis from the WSU Food Systems Program, Micaela Colley from the Organic Seed Alliance and Valerie Segrest from the Native American Agriculture Fund. An intoxicating journey from seed to plate, this evening kicks off with a deep dive into domestication and origin and evolutionary story of each species. Tasting grains grown in the maritime Northwest, our gastronomic journey continues by focusing on the cultural significance of grain and how food has always been at the intersection of cultural identity, throughout history. We will round out the evening with deliciously paired courses, and discuss current efforts to nourish and support all communities in the Pacific Northwest, including nutritionally dense breeding programs that work collaboratively with farmers and communities. Hosted by the London Plane, this event pairs unique courses with small-batch, locally malted brews and distilled spirits. Hosted by London Plane (300 Occidental Ave S, Seattle, WA 98104) Cost: $90 includes courses from Finnriver, Nash's Organic Produce and Barn Owl Bakery and paired alcohol from Fremont Brewing and Copperworks Distilling & Tasting Room

Sara’s Sweet Shop
As you meandered through Elwynn, something incredible wafted under your nose. For some, the sweet smell of childhood memories, for others a reminder of their rumbling stomach. Either way, it smelled delicious. You looked off the road to the East and what you saw was a quaint sandwich board sign that read
Sara’s Sweet Shop! Entrance around back- come on in!
As you wandered around to the side of this curious building facing away from the road, you saw beautiful sunflowers planted out front, with another sandwich board sign denoting the daily specials. There were bowls of cat food left outside, as well as a few of those feline visitors lounging about in stray rays of sunshine.
The sweet culmination of cinnamon, vanilla, chocolate, cheeses, and Light only knows what else drew you in through the doors finally, where a rather eager redhead greeted you, “Morning!” she’d chirp pleasantly, “Welcome to Sara’s Sweet Shop!” A freckled hand moved to gesture to herself, “I’m Sara.”
Tumblr media
To her right was a counter protected by a shield of glass, rows of pastries behind it- all of them labeled. Looking past the counter, you saw a handsome production kitchen in which- if you arrived early enough- you might watch these tempting creations come to life. On the left of that kitchen behind the counter, a staircase lead upward to the next floor.
You finished ordering and turned to find yourself a spot in the cozy dining room. A small number of tables and chairs would fit in the area, allowing you to take in the decor. Plants on hangers littered the ceiling, all of which were full of aromatic herbs. Sketches of birds inside frames were strewn about the walls, and a fireplace laid dormant, leading you to believe this would be a lovely place to stop in on a chilly day.
