9 of December of 2024
With little, children create a lot. It's not the first time I've said something like that. Their originality and creativity goes beyond what we can imagine.
Where do they get their ideas? Painting your body is normal, what child or adult has never done it? But do we know what they want to convey or represent? Can you see where these 8-year-old children, from a public school in Porto, Portugal, got this idea? A heartbeat just like in a hospital machine.
Do you realize, parents, how attentive your children are to everything that happens around them?

Summer, Music + Radio in 3017
My name is Matthew Perez, and I study music composition at Cal Arts where I will start my 3rd year there in the fall. I have lived in Southern California my entire life. I love baseball, film, traveling, my friends, family, and music. I hope to pursue a graduate degree in Music Composition after my bachelors. My dream is to become an independent composer and artist that makes and preforms music of multiple genres. I am half way through my internship at Able ARTS Work, so it feels like a good opportunity to reflect on the time I have spent here so far.
When I first applied for the Able ARTS Work internship, I quite frankly didn’t know anything about the organization, its mission statement or what it really did for that matter. I saw it under the long list of Los Angeles County Arts Commission internship positions and noticed a position that read Able ARTS Work ArtBeat Radio Intern, a title that I thought would fit pretty well with my current studies at Cal Arts and with the community service work I have done prior, so I decided to apply. A few weeks later, I did an interview, and after some time waiting I found out I got the position and was elated. The next thing I know it's my first day of work and I start to get a little nervous. I get my first opportunity to see the artists at TAP II, and many of my attempts to communicate with them went unanswered, or so I thought at the time. I began to feel quite uncomfortable and think to myself, “What have I gotten myself into? I am not ready for this.”
Thankfully that moment of panic was brief.

I knew if this was going to be a successful internship, I would have to adapt, learn from and open myself up to the artists, and I think I have done just that so far.  Even after growing comfortable with the artists it took some time for me to be able to read their moods and to be able to understand what was the best way to work with them.
I also started to work with the artists every day on my projects which primarily have focused on making a podcast and a community concert that will bring the artists at TAP II  together with communities outside of Able ARTS Work. An important part in planning the concert was seeing TAP II go on their field trips and trying to bring a similar experience to our event. That means having to share a space with non-Able Arts Work members and giving the artists an opportunity to interact and learn from people that are not a part of their community. Overall it has been tiring. The commute hasn't been fun (waking up at 6 everyday isn't exactly a college student’s dream), and trying to keep the artists engaged everyday can be exhausting, but it's been pretty great. The artists and faculty have supported and guided me every step of the way and shown me such kindness and love. Their energy has kept me motivated, and I feel I have definitely learned a lot about love, patience, empathy, and communication from them.
Many of the obstacles I have faced during my internship were not ones that came from a lack resources,  a lack of cooperation, or from any induvial issues with the artists or faculty, rather the obstacles I faced came from my own attitude and approach in how I presented myself and my goals.  I learned I could not do everything the way I originally wanted or do everything by myself, and that I would need to ask for and accept input from the staff and the artists to be successful. The project quickly shifted from one where I was an artist trying to create my own vision to one where I was a leader ready to listen and adapt and utilize everyone's abilities to create a strong piece we all contributed to.
I remember one of the first ArtBeat Radio workshops I led, I made an entire lesson planned that revolved around using technology in class. However, on that particular day the group was not very engaged or interested in using technology. Luckily my supervisor was there to suggest I change gears, so I dropped my lesson plan and tried to make the class more interactive and began to record and sing with them. That day went so much better than it could have possibly went with my lesson plan, it ended up being tremendously fun and, equally important, very productive and I began to understand how the artists communicated and how I could listen better.
While working with the artists, I was reminded how powerful music and the arts can be, something I definitely forget at times in the heavily art saturated environment that is Cal Arts where even I sometimes take the arts for granted. I was surprised to see how each and every day the artists at TAP II would be so eager to create and experience the art, music, and activities that TAP II provided. I believe many of the artists at Able ARTS work not only enjoy the art and music they offer, but use it as a means to connect more deeply and interact further with the world around them which to me was very amazing. This internship has reassured me on my choice to pursue a career in the arts, and I am very grateful for that. I am even more grateful of the reminder of how EVERYONE (and I cannot emphasize the word everyone enough) has intrinsic worth, abilities, and deserves to be loved and treated with respect, something that is a core part of the Able ARTS Work mission, and seems to be too often forgotten about in everyday society. I have to thank the students, faculty and The Los Angeles County Arts Commission for giving me this opportunity and for making it such a great and welcoming experience so far. I am excited to finish my internship here.
