Richie: Hey wanna be friends?!
Stan: No hablo inglés
Richie: ¡¿Hablas español?! ¡Yo también! ¡Ah! ¿De dónde eres? ¿Te gustan las siestas?
Stan: I don't speak Spanish, either
Richie *laughing*: You’re funny

Steve, five years old, going into his kindergarten classroom and his sight is suddenly covered by the glowing face of a boy his age who introduces himself as Sodapop.
Steve, five years old, walking home with the boy and his mother, who seemed surprised when he said no one was coming to pick him up.
Steve, six years old, going over to Sodapop's house for the first time, confused when he sees everyone sit down at the dinner table together.
Steve, seven years old, legs swinging as he sits next to Sodapop on the porch railing.
Steve, eight years old, starting to learn about cars and telling Sodapop every new fact he finds out and Sodapop smiling, trying to ask questions that might be interesting.
Steve, nine years old, getting intensely jealous as he watches Soda marry a girl on the playground.
Steve, nine years old, hating this girl — Katie's her name — who is now everywhere Sodapop goes, holding his hand and laughing at his jokes.
Steve, nine years old, telling Soda that no, he doesn’t have a crush on Katie, and Soda insisting that it's fine, that they shouldn't let a girl come between them.
Steve, ten years old, watching his mother slam the door behind her. Her curses echo around the house for days.
Steve, twelve years old, sleeping over at the Curtises', telling Soda in the darkness that he still can’t hear anyone speak Spanish without thinking about her.
Steve, thirteen years old, staring at Soda with wide eyes because he just said "vamos a casa" instead of "let's go home".
Steve, fifteen years old, saying "di esn iz take gut" to return the favour, voice barely above a whisper, but Soda hears and turns to him, eyes sparkling, and tells him to say it again so Mom can hear him.
Steve, seventeen years old, trying harder than ever to become a source of comfort, to be able to do something to help Soda through Mom and Dad and Sandy and Ponyboy and Johnny and Dally and failing, utterly failing every time because who ever taught him how to be human?
Steve, seventeen years old, dragging Soda to bed so he can sleep because he was just about snoring at work, but now that he’s home he’s convinced he has to help Darry with something.
Steve, seventeen years old, slinging an arm over Soda to "make sure he doesn't run off".
Steve, eighteen years old, getting home from graduation with an unopened letter burning a hole in his pocket, settling down on his bed, chest swelling with disbelief at every line.
Steve, eighteen years old, dialing at the phone faster than he ever has before, not waiting to see who picks up because he knows he'll be waiting by the phone.
"Do you mean it?"
Steve, twenty-one years old, watching Soda hug his brothers one last time before they get in the car, leaving the city against all odds.
Steve, twenty-three years old, in an uncomfortable plastic chair, gripping Soda’s tightly, praying for the first time since his mother left because he doesn’t know how he would go on without him.
Steve, twenty-three years old, heading home with Soda in the seat beside him, not sure whether to laugh or cry in incredulity.
Steve, twenty-four years old, letting the afternoon pass him by, letting the sun heat the sticky air, fingers intertwined with Soda’s as they lay on the bed, eyed fluttering open and closed, doing nothing but feel the other's company.
Steve, twenty-six years old, pretending he can’t hear Soda sobbing on the phone with Ponyboy in the other room because he can’t comfort him, it's his own fucking fault — never quit smoking, convinced nothing would happen to him. Look at him now.
Steve, twenty-seven years old, not sure how much time is left and trying his best to appreciate life while knowing it could end tomorrow and there's so much he hasn’t done and it’s not fair and how does he make it all worth it and maybe it's the uncertainty that’s the worst of it all.
Soda, thirty years old, walking into a graveyard alone, bouquet of supermarket flowers in his hand.

little joys of learning Yiddish: knowing the author of the Tevye stories wrote under a pen name that’s basically “hello” (literally translated “peace upon you”)
in honor of this I shall henceforth be writing under the name Halen Welmet

Is the Hebrew and Yiddish "r" like the French "r"?
Jumblr- do any of you that speak Hebrew or Yiddish and trill r’s in your throat have tips for learning to roll r’s like they do in Spanish or Italian?
I’ve been trying for literal years and do not understand. I can only do the uvular trill.

Has anyone else noticed the weird appropriation of Yiddish for specifically anti-zionist spaces? It makes me deeply uncomfortable.
