anyways i just wanted to talk about baku's outfits in whc2

because his introduction portrays him as this loud, brash, shonen-esque character and pairs that vibe with a faceful of red: red shirt, red vest, red hair:

which he then follows up with at school! he's outgoing and his eye-catching color palette of choice reflects that

and after that, he continues wearing red; almost every outfit he dons must have something red in it

so when baku goes to find na baekjin in episode 4, it's kind of a big deal when the red shirt he always wears under his uniform is gone.

and of course, that brings us to union era baku's outfit: all black hoodie, shirt, pants, everything. by this point in the show we've really started to see baku's darker side (pun unintended) and how he acts when he's serious, instead of his usual silly goofy self that we've seen when he's with his friends and the eunjang kids.

it's not that he never wore an outfit without red before, but this is the longest period of time we've seen him go without it, and tbh, i love that the show pays attention to details like this.

i didn't finish the webtoon (webtoon lovers don't come for me i'll probably end up binging it in the next few days) so i don't know if this happens in the webtoon too, but i'm such a big fan of how his clothes reflect his mental state. union era baku is quiet. he doesn't emote much anymore. he's muted, almost a shadow of the larger-than-life character we met before. his darkness is violence, and guess what? back in episode 3 when juntae is explaining how baku fought the union guys to protect the eunjang kids, we see him wearing the very same shirt:

yeah. i just think that's interesting.

anyways, that makes it all the more gratifying to see him incorporate red into his outfits again after leaving the union

even though his outfit still features a lot of black, we're starting to see him return to the way he was, all because of...love. he loves the eunjang kids, he loves his dad (as complicated as that relationship is), and above all, he loves his friends. his friends were what he joined the union for, and his friends were what he abandoned the union for. his friends pulled him out of the darkness and into the light again.

red is the color of love, of blood, of fire. red is baku's color, and i'm so happy he brought it back.

As much as I enjoy picking apart and having Emotions TM about Little's many low points - his failures and the indignities he suffers at the hands of fate and his fellow man - that darkness just can't hit the same unless you consider the light too (and I think many out there do fail to consider that light).

He isn't compelling to me just by how many times he gets knocked down, he's compelling for the fact that he gets back up again.

MR PROBLEMS HIMSELF. 

As usual he has more calm and grace than would be expected from someone who has caused so much trouble for literally every single living person - but of course he does, it’s Clow Reed. 

But Clow Reed aside there are some incredibly fun visual choices all over this. Beneath his robes you can see the same kind of traditional clothing that Lava Lamp and his father wore, tying the bloodline together in a way you can actually see. He also has butterfly clasps holding the robe closed, which evoke Yuuko Ichihara but also a bit of Watanuki, who is just as much his descendant as Lava Lamp is (and there are two butterflies, which would match their duality). 

Clow himself gazes peacefully out at scenery that we can’t see, but we CAN see the bare branches of a tree with three birds perched nearby. The birds could easily be argued to be a sign of anyone you really wanted it to be. Is it the remaining Tsubasa family - Fai, Kurogane, and Lava Lamp? Is Lava Lamp on a separate branch because he’s the only one of them who comes from a different timeline?

Is it maybe the three Syaorans, with Watanuki and Lava Lamp on one branch and our Clone Syaoran on another (or the other way around?)? Or is it the Sakuras, with the original ‘Sakura’ frozen in time on her own branch, while the other Sakura and her clone sit on the other?

Are the branches of the tree a sign of diverging paths in time? Of timelines cut off and restarted and choices leading into different directions? Is the number of birds a representation of that original timeline (ie, 1 bird) has now become a new timeline altogether, but resulted in more birds than there were originally due to the disturbance? Or is the fact that we see BOTH scenarios at the same time a sign that the broken universe can still be mended, and the three as a whole will grow again in the future? Or perhaps a sign of how Clamp's future vision worked, seeing multiple paths and timelines at once? 

OR. Are they just pretty birds? The most deceptive option?!

Either way, we’ve had several other covers of the Tsubasa family standing in a dead-looking tree, and here we have Clow Reed calmly watching the same kind of tree - but from a distance.

harry is the love of arcturus life!!! the tragedy is that is was actually required until arcturus fucking left😭

to me arcturus grew up hearing about harry and actually befriended him when the news that sirius was out of azkaban and was harry’s godfather came out, they sort of bonded over him! and I believe harry also played a hugee part in arcturus rebellion, he saw harry as like the epytome of everything sirius standed for and also as kind of a way for sirius to trust him more.. u know befriending his godchild.

Whereas harry saw arcturus as a literal hidden gem, his own goldmine, a diamond in the rust … what I think made arcturus particularly fascinating is that harry could not figure him out, never showing himself fully but still like the instigator in their relationship kinda . Plus well arcturus is very much like sirius (at least he tried to bs) so obviously that’s very fascinating for harry

the way I think they both never got over eachother because its never been.. discussed. like one minute they were fighting side to side and the next harry got the news arcturus left for good and ignored harry’s letters/ any way of getting in touch. so harry kind of forced himself to leave him alone and after the delusion came down he was so angry and disgusted like turns out the kid he almost bared his soul to abandoned him in 1.5 seconds when things got rough . postwar interactions would be insane.. do u think arcturus gets married eventually?

Unironically, Ben Shapiro's greatest win against the left was turning left/centerleft laypeople off from the idea of a 'debate with facts and logic' because of his bad faith arguments. Like it's almost...triggering to people, and that leaves a lot of people with unsharpened ideas and an unwillingness to explain them in a rigorous manner.

One example phenomenon that this has fed into is a continuing degradation in the lines of thought people use to reach certain conclusions - so person A expresses opinion X that person B agrees with, but because person B never really sees the entire line of thought laid out by anyone else, their formulation of opinion X based on their own intuition might randomly lean on some idea Y which person A doesn't care about. As a result, if Idea Y lacks actual backing, person B might wrongly defend opinion X and give an impression that the entire thing is flimsy, or person B might lose their own footing and assuredness and change sides.

I also think that he so badly mangled the concept of debate in the casual public consciousness that it's a contributing factor to the vague anti-academic sentiment in recent years. (Which, while academia as an institution has problems, there's certainly an undercurrent of less directed discontent that is contributing to low public opinion of education as a whole - and a greater feeling expressed on social media that 'casual reference of marquee media' is in a way insulting to people who have not consumed it, rather than an invitation to partake or something you can pass by without caring. Not on tumblr though, where we see Dracula and then we read Dracula.)

tl;dr his pseudo-intellectualism meaningfully contributed to certain common sentiments of anti-intellectualism because of how badly and annoyingly he and the people who emulate(d) him did/do it.

Disclaimer: I have favorite episodes that come from every single season on this list, including 7a. For example, even though Season 6 is low on the list, the God Complex, Almost People/Rebel Flesh, and Impossible Astronaut are some of my favorite of the show. I do really love the Power of Three. These are based on season arc/average feeling per episode/rewatchability on a subjective level.
