Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings)

            Margaret of Burgundy was the Queen of France and Navarre, and was the first wife of King Louis X and I. She was a princess of the House of Burgundy, the oldest daughter of Robert II Duke of Burgundy an Anges of France (who was the youngest daughter of Louis IX of France). In 1305, Margaret married her cousin Louis I and had their daughter Joan.

            In 1314, the Tour de Nesle affair was revealed, it was a well-known scandal for the French royal family. The daughters-in-law of King Philip IV, Margaret, Blanche, and Joan were all accused of adultery. The three women were said to have conducted their affairs with Norman knights in a tower in Paris.

            It was Isabella of France (wife of King Edward II of England) who became a witness against those involved in the affair. Isabella had given her sisters-in-law a purse, the Norman knights were found in possession of them after the three ladies had given it to them as a gift The affair was exposed and the knights were tortured and then executed.

            Margaret, Blanche, and Joan were found guilty and imprisoned. Margaret spent the last two years of her life in prison. The women were imprisoned in poor conditions and mistreated, which resulted Margaret catching a virus and passing away. She died aged 24 or 25. Joan’s paternity became in doubt after the affair.  

            Margaret of Burgundy is one of the characters in Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings) by Maurice Druon and was portrayed in the miniseries 1972 and 2005.

It took me over a year but I finally managed to find the first volume of The Accursed Kings AND it did not cost a fortune! The Del Duca edition, because my relationship with this series started long before I was born, when 11yo mum received the sixth volume from her French teacher. This obviously meant I had to find the rest of the series and complete the collection, and while volumes 2-5 were surprisingly easy to find, volume 1 was either ridiculously expensive or simply wasn't at all. What can I say, thank you old French bookshop I randomly stumbled upon on ebay, may you thrive.

Hello ! Unfortunately no, I've only ever had the books as the same old copies I stole from my mum when I was a teen (and admittedly I haven't read them in a very long time). I do use Audible for my other audiobooks, so apart from looking into your local libraries, I'm afraid I can't help much.

do you have access to INA’s site. if not i can give you my access codes. if yes you must absolutely watch les rois maudits pour jean piat. he’s constantly dressed in red like some of femme fatale. he’s the funniest mf around. he’s constantly plotting against his aunt (who’s equally funny and matches his freak) that he hates and who hates him as much as he does to get his land back. he doesn’t hesitate to use violence for his plots and sometimes they make him look more massive than he is irl. in one episode he’s got his shirt very opened and the rolled up sleeves. he’s respectfully flirting at all times with isabelle de france (one of the most beautiful women of this show), and he has bagged for ten minutes marguerite de france (the other one of the most beautiful women of this show). he’s also doomed to fail and he deadass started the thousand years war. the show in itself has insanely good characters (mahaut, tolomei, guccio, the guy who will become the pope, philippe V of france, charles de valois the comedy relief, mortimer and isabelle the serious love couple doomed to fail…..) and it looks more like filmed theatre than an actual tv series. so if you haven’t go watch it it will fulfill your piat dreams

            Robert III of Artois was a French nobleman from the House of Artois. He was a male descendant of the Capetian dynasty, his father died early from wounds during a battle in 1297 against the Flemish. After the death of his grandfather in 1302, his aunty, Mahaut (Mathilde) inherited the County of Artois by custom as she was his oldest child. At the time Robert was too young to challenge this, but as he got older he became more competitive.

            Robert became an important figure during the succession of his brother-in-law Philip VI of France as his advisor. In 1309, he received as appanage the county of Beaumont-le-Roger in the County of Artois. When Mahaut died in 1329, the title to Artois went to her daughter Joan II.

            In 1329, Robert was found guilty of forging his dead fathers will, which lost his hope of gaining Artois and he failed to appear before the king. To avoid arrest and execution he left France and lived with his nephew John II. He left behind his wife and two sons, who were both imprisoned in Normandy in 1334.

            The king compelled the duke to give Robert up; Robert fled France to England to the court of Edward III of England. Robert urged the English king to go to war with France, and became part of the English council. Robert spilled France’s secrets to the English, which influenced the Hundred Years’ War.

            He succumbed to dysentery after being wounded in 1342 and died, aged 54 and is buried at Blackfriars Church, London, today his tomb is now at St Paul’s Cathedral.

            Robert is a major character in the book series Les Rois Maudits (The Accursed Kings), historical novels by Maurice Druon. He was also portrayed in the French miniseries in 1972 and 2005.
