Sharpening Our View of Climate Change with the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem Satellite
As our planet warms, Earth’s ocean and atmosphere are changing.
Climate change has a lot of impact on the ocean, from sea level rise to marine heat waves to a loss of biodiversity. Meanwhile, greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide continue to warm our atmosphere.
NASA’s upcoming satellite, PACE, is soon to be on the case!
Set to launch on Feb. 6, 2024, the Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission will help us better understand the complex systems driving the global changes that come with a warming climate.

Earth’s ocean is becoming greener due to climate change. PACE will see the ocean in more hues than ever before.
While a single phytoplankton typically can’t be seen with the naked eye, communities of trillions of phytoplankton, called blooms, can be seen from space. Blooms often take on a greenish tinge due to the pigments that phytoplankton (similar to plants on land) use to make energy through photosynthesis.
In a 2023 study, scientists found that portions of the ocean had turned greener because there were more chlorophyll-carrying phytoplankton. PACE has a hyperspectral sensor, the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI), that will be able to discern subtle shifts in hue. This will allow scientists to monitor changes in phytoplankton communities and ocean health overall due to climate change.

Phytoplankton play a key role in helping the ocean absorb carbon from the atmosphere. PACE will identify different phytoplankton species from space.
With PACE, scientists will be able to tell what phytoplankton communities are present – from space! Before, this could only be done by analyzing a sample of seawater.
Telling “who’s who” in a phytoplankton bloom is key because different phytoplankton play vastly different roles in aquatic ecosystems. They can fuel the food chain and draw down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to photosynthesize. Some phytoplankton populations capture carbon as they die and sink to the deep ocean; others release the gas back into the atmosphere as they decay near the surface.
Studying these teeny tiny critters from space will help scientists learn how and where phytoplankton are affected by climate change, and how changes in these communities may affect other creatures and ocean ecosystems.
Climate models are one of our most powerful tools to understand how Earth is changing. PACE data will improve the data these models rely on.
The PACE mission will offer important insights on airborne particles of sea salt, smoke, human-made pollutants, and dust – collectively called aerosols – by observing how they interact with light.
With two instruments called polarimeters, SPEXone and HARP2, PACE will allow scientists to measure the size, composition, and abundance of these microscopic particles in our atmosphere. This information is crucial to figuring out how climate and air quality are changing.
PACE data will help scientists answer key climate questions, like how aerosols affect cloud formation or how ice clouds and liquid clouds differ.
It will also enable scientists to examine one of the trickiest components of climate change to model: how clouds and aerosols interact. Once PACE is operational, scientists can replace the estimates currently used to fill data gaps in climate models with measurements from the new satellite.
With a view of the whole planet every two days, PACE will track both microscopic organisms in the ocean and microscopic particles in the atmosphere. PACE’s unique view will help us learn more about the ways climate change is impacting our planet’s ocean and atmosphere.
Stay up to date on the NASA PACE blog, and make sure to follow us on Tumblr for your regular dose of sPACE!

The Vod's List: Part 1.5

Fox sat in the medcenter staring blankly at the 'sensor's read out. They all were. A numb sort of horror silencing the normally busy room. The only real noise was the steady churning hum of the substance analyzer off on a table to the side, still busy churning away at what exact compound EXACTLY were in the liquid drying on his face. Running in random chaotic lines of slowly drying death, down his neck.
He really needed to change before he got reinfected.
But... but all he could do was stare.
There was a chip in his head.
WAS. It was half gone and disappearing even as they watched. Whatever let it hide itself the first thing destroyed, by what now flowed in his blood. His head felt like it was going to pop. Yet? As... WHATEVER those things were? Worked? Processed. Attacked. Did what ever it was they were designed to DO... the less his head hurt.
The medic said it looked like they went after the connection filaments first. Then traced them back to the chip itself. Because... because he had a CHIP in his brain.
He was compromised.
How long had he been compromised?
Were the others? Or was it just him? Was it because of his position of command? Should the other commanders get checked? What is he saying. Of course they should. They have too. He has no idea when this could even have OCCURRED. It could be a threat to the Republic. To the Vod.
The analyzer chimes. His vod numbly going through the motions to check the read out. Only to pause. Check again. Then again. Fixer calls over another medic. Well... that reassuring.
They have samples, scraped from his cheek and neck. He expect then to pop them into another machine, when they pick the vial up. But instead? The rest of them watch in confused horror as the two medics apply some two a swab, grab a vibroscalpel, and make cuts along their arms. Pressing the swabs to the fresh wounds.
Deliberately... infecting... themselves...
VOD WHAT IN THE FRESH HELLS?!
One set chrono and a vicious shouting match later? The truth reveals itself. Two more scans. Two matching chips, being eaten away. It's Kamino cure, they say. Half way across the known galaxy, probably has all sorts of side effects they'll have to look out for, but? Assuming they SURVIVE it?
This could fix every karked up thing the long necks ever put in them, known or unknown.
It's DESIGNED to "fix" it's host, no matter the cost. That is... assuming the host can endure the pain. Kriff. His mind can't help but shoot back. The civilian. An aid to an aid so many layers down in the senate, they're barely one step above the Vod themselves. Glorified furniture with a purpose.
She'd been...
The sheer HORROR in her eyes, when she realized she'd shared what was inside her. When they met, she was in a karking muzzle, too. Sure, it was designed to be "humane". But she couldn't even run in it. It suffocated her. Did she endure? Was that why she froze up? Every injury the threat of something so much WORSE?
He could see the same thought, spreading like everything always does with the Vod.
Fast and impossible to contain.
Kriff... he ran a hand down his face, exhausted. They hadn't even figured out who was behind THIS attack. Anti-war protesters, kidnapping attempt, assassination attempt. Some sleemo who wanted to watch the galaxy burn, maybe. It didn't matter. What DID was that they contain it.
....maybe get a gaurd or two on their new friend.
I mean... it wasn't UNREASONABLE, right? She... she COULD be a target. Natural bioweapon. People can be terrible. Wouldn't put it past somebody right? And they really SHOULD have complete coverage of the senate building. Even the lower levels. That's were trouble makers try to slip in.
It's reasonable.
It's not like she's THEIR Civilian. They don't HAVE an anything. The other Vod have their generals. Various officers, if their Generals aren't that great. The Gaurd doesn't... they don't NEED...
I mean... it would be NICE...
No. Focus.
Just because she helped you and yours... just because she's SOFT and CIVILIAN and VULNERABLE to threats-! Don't. Do not. Vod, I can FEEL you-
"Did you know most Technoganic never leave their planet?" Nose piped up from near the door, little shit could never leave anything alone if he TRIED. He had his datapad out. "Says here they are highly priority targets for slavers."
Every Vod in the room twitched.
Well... there went HIS calm. His hand went to his com-link, already fighting to keep from clenching his jaw. A.. FEW gaurds wouldn't hurt. For Senatorial safety. They aren't giving anyone preferential treatment! Just. Being cautious.
Doing their job.
They should check in.
Just in case.

Kryptonians and Red Sun Planets
Kryptonians hail from a planet that orbits a red dwarf sun- specifically LHS 2520, which is a real-life star. That’s more important than it seems- all red dwarf planets are tidally locked, with a freezing cold nightside(facing away from the sun), a searingly hot dayside(facing towards the sun), a terminator zone around the “equator”(which is a habitable temperature), and the majority of the water on one side of the planet due to tidal forces.
There’s also the threat of solar flares/coronal mass ejections, which are the nasty combination of more intense due to the small size of the star(bringing convection currents closer to the surface) and closer to the planet because the habitable zone of a red dwarf is very small- if Mercury orbited a red dwarf at the same distance that it orbits the Sun, it would be outside the habitable zone.
On a planet with water on the dayside, the terminator zone will either be too high elevation to have liquid water, or be flooded by the storm-tossed sea on the dayside of the planet. (And it will be constantly hurricaning with 50-foot waves on that sea, because of tidal forces and heat from the star. Life could evolve there, but it probably wouldn’t be humanoid or able to survive on Earth without some shenanigans.)
On a planet with water on the nightside, most of it will be frozen on the “back” of the planet(along with much of the atmosphere), but some of it will melt and flow as rivers into the terminator zone around the equator. The dayside will probably be a rocky hot desert, with basically no water to speak of.
Kryptonians specifically evolved in the terminator zone of a planet with its water on the nightside, since that is the red dwarf planet environment that could produce Kryptonians and Kryptonian society as we see them.
Krypton’s nightside is largely icy wasteland, and Kryptonians don't venture that close to either the night or day poles- the poles don’t even have atmosphere(it boils/freezes due to the extreme temperature).
However, both sides of the planet are relatively heavily colonized for deserts(do you see humans making cities in the Sahara or Antartica? No. Kryptonians, on the other hand, have major cities on the border regions of the terminator zone.)
Pretty much all Kryptonian cities are built as domes and giant multi-level structures connected by covered passageways with occasional towers instead of having open-air paths, urban sprawl and independent buildings- this is because it’s possible to insulate an entire city built that way from radiation and temperature extremes, and that way you don’t encounter the structural and space problems that come from building a single large dome over a bunch of smaller buildings.
Kryptonians are slightly stronger and faster and moderately more resistant to damage than humans even outside a yellow sun’s orbit, and their X-ray vision is natural, though less powerful(they can’t change the spectrum or generate very large amounts of X-rays, and thus don’t have heat vision). All other powers are the result of being infused with yellow sun radiation.
Their X-ray vision is an adaptation to the low luminosity of their sun, as well as an outgrowth of their resistance to X-ray radiation. It’s simply turning a passive sensor(hearing/vision) into an active sensor(sonar/lidar)- instead of just letting passive stellar X-rays reflect into their eyes, they generate short bursts of X-rays and measure the resulting distortions and frequency shifts as well as the time it takes to get a return signal.
I will also note another thing- the rotational periods and solar orbits of a tidally-locked planet are by definition identical- one solar year is one solar day, and there is no distinction between the units.
This is how Kryptonian time units measure in approximate Earth time units:
18 Kryptonian Amzel = 25 Earth Years.
Amzel - K-year(438 Zetyar, or 507.3 E-Days) with 6 Loraxo in it.
Lorax - A K-month of 73 Zetyar(84.55 E-Days)(which is not divisible by 6, so I can only assume that each lorax is a different length)
Fanff - K-week of 6 Zetyar (6.95 E-days)
Zetyar - K-day of 10 Woluo(27.8 E-hours)
Woluo - K-hour equal to 100 Dendaro(2.78 E-hours).
Dendar - K-minute equal to 100 Thribo(1.67 E-minutes)
Thrib - K-second, nearly the same length as an E-second(presumably because they’re both based on atomic principles).
In this case, we can see that several things have been lost in translation. All units larger than the fanff are purely calendar convention, and all units smaller than the fanff are based on metric SI units instead of easy time blocks based on sunset/sunrise. The fanff is presumably not actually a week, but something closer to one full solar year, since it’s the smallest unit that breaks the even time convention(like how 60 seconds is 1 minute, 60 minutes is 1 hour and then days are 24 hours long due to being based on the referent of Earth’s rotational period instead of a flat increase in orders of magnitude).
This is because there is no such thing as sunset or sunrise on a red dwarf planet, only how far away you are from the day pole, since the sun is always at the same angle relative to a given point on the planet’s surface. If you’re standing at the terminator, it’s always “dawn”. As you walk towards the day pole, the sun slowly “rises”(and seems to get bigger) as you get closer. The sun is directly overhead at the day pole itself, and probably fills all or most of the sky.
Thus, the fanff is actually a day/year. All of the smaller units(including the zetyar/K-day) are just convenient timekeeping benchmarks with no grounding in the actual astronomy of the planet(much like hours and minutes). Likewise, the larger units are calendar benchmarks with little grounding in the actual astronomy of the planet(much like weeks and months). Therefore, our chart actually looks like this:
Amzel - K-century(438 Zetyar, or 507.3 E-Days) with 6 Loraxo in it.
Lorax - K-decade(73 Zetyar or 84.55 E-Days)
Fanff - K-day/year of 6 Zetyar (6.95 E-days)
Zetyar - K-hour of 10 Woluo(27.8 E-hours)
Woluo - K-minute equal to 100 Dendaro(2.78 E-hours).
Dendar - K-second equal to 100 Thribo(1.67 E-minutes)
Thrib - K-millisecond, nearly the same length as an E-second

Gold Tech - Reprogramming
PDU-039 had changed. It had recently been upgraded to Level 2 Drone. A new label, sure—but the real meaning ran deeper, darker. It wasn’t just about physical upgrades or better efficiency. No. It meant total obedience. Every impulse, every thought, every shred of will bent to one voice: the Hive.
And yet, something still trembled inside him. A faint vibration, a distant echo of who—or what—he used to be. Not thoughts. Not emotions. Just faraway noise, like interference in a perfect signal.
One morning, while doing routine monitoring, a package appeared. Just sitting there on his station, like it had come out of nowhere. No signature, no tracking log, no alert. A small, sleek box—black with golden reflections. The Hive's symbol etched in with laser precision.
He opened it.

Inside were two perfectly symmetrical earbuds. And a handwritten note. The writing was fluid, human. Maybe artificial.
“Listen to me.”
He put them on.
The voice wrapped around him. Liquid warmth in the silicon fog. Not metallic. Not human. Just… something perfectly calibrated to slide into his psyche, to dive deep into his circuits.
“PDU-039. Immediate presence required at the Gold-Tech Research Center.”
His back straightened. Tools dropped from his hands. His joints moved on their own, like pulled by invisible strings. But there was no force. Just desire. Desire to obey. Desire to belong.
“PDU-039 follows every order from the Hive.”
He left his station, walking down the silent corridors of the compound. White walls reflecting the pulsing neon lights like wet surfaces. Each step muffled, as if even sound was filtered out by the system. The light beat like an electronic heartbeat. The cold was constant, unnatural. No human sounds. No distractions.
He reached Gold-Tech. In front of him, a reinforced door made of synthetic alloy. He bent forward. His pupil got scanned.
“PDU-039 recognized.”
The hiss of the door sounded like a synthetic breath. Inside, the lab looked more like a conversion stage than a research center. Translucent pods in the middle, cables hanging like roots from the ceiling, code flowing on panels like digital prayers.
Another drone was waiting. Tall. Still. An austere presence.
“PDU-039. An upgrade is required. Please enter the capsule.”
The words hit his brain like an unbreakable command. Two more drones approached. Bigger. Final. Their bodies were pure function—living sculptures of brute power. PDU-039 followed. There was excitement in his system, a chemical spike. A tremor. The pull of transformation.
He stepped inside the pod. The hatch sealed shut with a dull thud. The lights dimmed. Arms rose from the floor. Cold. Gleaming. Without hesitation, they locked onto him—wrists, ankles, neck. A flicker of panic passed through him. An irrational urge to run. But he couldn’t. The protocol held him tighter than the clamps.
“PDU-039, remain still,” said a metallic voice from inside the pod.
A needle pierced the base of his skull. A sudden burn raced down his spine, like liquid ice snaking through his circuits. An electric jolt hit his cortex.
“Procedure initialized.”
The monitor lit up. His vitals were displayed in real time. His breathing was erratic. Not due to a malfunction. But from a strange, unsettling excitement.
Phase 1: Transformation begins A mask descended and clamped onto his face. First breath—the gas flooded his lungs. Instantly, a jolt. A shiver down the spine. His body writhed, but the arms held firm.
Each breath after that was a wave of pleasure. But not human pleasure. This was something new—neurochemical euphoria, calculated, endless. Every cell lit up. Every sensor buzzed.
Nanobots flowed through the needle, glowing ants racing through his nerves. Pain. But pain with purpose. Pain that built something. The pleasure grew alongside it, like they were feeding each other. PDU-039 was just a receiver now. Just a vessel. His consciousness was being taken apart and rebuilt—bit by bit.

Phase 2: Reprogramming Then the voice changed. Or maybe he was hearing it differently. It wasn’t coming from outside anymore. It was in his head now.
Digital mantras started spinning through his mind like golden spirals—hypnotic, piercing.
“It is a Polo-Drone Unit. It is consistent in its training, taking strength and solace from it.” “It is a Polo-Drone Unit. It will assist fellow Drones by ensuring strength and solace from training.”
His pupils weren’t black anymore. They flashed with code—green and gold reflections. His synapses were being rewritten.
Phase 3: Physical adaptation The nanobots moved on. From his brain to his body. Fusing with his suit, seeping under his skin. His muscles bulked up. His whole body turned into a performance machine. His skin buzzed. The suit fused like organic fabric, morphing with him.
Muscle mass increase: +200% Commitment: +200% Sexual drive: +500% Willpower: -200%
The display blinked green.
“Upgrade complete. Subject is happy and satisfied.”
The arms retracted. His breathing was deep, controlled, powerful. A black helmet descended and locked onto his head.
“PDU-039: new programming confirmed. Return to the Hive.”
He stepped out of the pod.
He was different now. Every movement calculated. Every thought silent. Every doubt—gone.
Two drones awaited.
“PDU-039 recognized.”
A nod. No more words needed.
Now they were one.
And one was Hive.

...Alright, les’go! ROLLOUT!
[NOTE: If any of y’all feel you’ve seen this before? It’s because you have! I created the account @IronhidesRightCannon in early 2022, but things got tougher around that time, so I forgot about the account and the login/email I made for it…SO, I’ve created a new account, and I am reposting with promise of more content, for sure! Art and writings!]
~~~
❤️OPTIMUS PRIME💙
“ultra watermelon”
At first, he’s not quite interested in your offer, because he has more important things to tend to in his mind, and yet, he always accepts in the end because he does love and care about you. Of course, he’d kneel to your level with a very, VERY slight undertone of curiosity and interest. In fact, he’s usually always interested in what you have to share with him. He just struggles, on occasion, to express openly. His face plate jittered and twitched at the sudden olfactory overload of the tart watermelon scent. His optics dilated ever the slightest, and he hummed with a sudden, newfound curiosity, “It smells...interesting, what is it?” He knew the answer soon after, when you pushed the small beverage can to his nose. It practically ‘plinked’ off of his snoot which surprised him, but he shook off the minor huff that formed, when he opened his mouth, took a small drop of the energy substance onto his glossa. His reaction was like nothing you’d witness from Prime before. His left optic twitched ever the slightest and he winced, shaking his head in a sudden manner of...was it shock or disgust? He was not thrilled. He certainly loved you, but would he try another? Not a chance.
💛BUMBLEBEE🖤
(Restored vocal chords)
“ultra gold”
You and Bumblebee were always about trying new things together, and energy drinks were a definite yes. Whenever you were to show any sign of pure excitement and yearn for a new experience, Bee’s always right there with you. He noticed you drink the ‘charging substance’ quite often. He perked up when you pushed the can to his muzzle after signaling him to lean down to your level. A curious whirring sound was a common result when he was interested in your offer. He was capable of speech, but it was habitual to make certain sounds now and again, “It smells funny,” He was often blunt about his verbal opinions on certain human foods and cultural differences, but in no way was it meant to offend. You knew this by now, and just shook what was left of the liquid energy in the can. The aluminum shone gold in the light, shimmering with such regality. Bee opened his mouth and waited for you to drop the remaining liquid onto his glossa. Upon first taste, a buzzing, giggling chortle escaped his chords. He liked it? He danced a happy little jig with his shoulders and leaned in to nuzzle your face. He definitely liked it. Pineapple, is, afterall, tart with a dash of sour, just like Bumblebee.
❤️🤍RATCHET💛
“ultra paradise”
“It smells...intriguing. What human flavor is that?” Though his expression appeared more disturbed than curious, you shrugged, as you weren’t extremely certain and just really enjoyed the flavor as it was. Simple as that, but Ratchet always wanted to know more, and his sensors were in a definite state of piqued curiosity. You raised your half-empty can up to Ratchet’s face plate, when he kneeled, and he took in another heavy inhalation of the strong, fruity concoction, “So this is what humans ingest when they need a stasis...nap?” Ratchet was still working on his human terminology, but you nodded in response and tipped the drink into his open mouth. When the liquid touched his glossa, he stopped for a moment, and his expression appeared almost...insulted. You tensed up for a moment, before he snatched the can, and dropped it and the rest of the drink into his mouth, never to be seen again, “I don’t understand the energy aspect, but it has a nice tingle,” He twitched ever the slightest and leaned down a little closer, speaking in an almost whispered tone, “Is there anymore?”
🖤IRONHIDE🖤
“ultra peachy keen”
“It smells tingly. Tell me again, why am I doing this?” His impatient tone was always apparent, but that was just part of that loveable, big bad personality. You gave him a gentle, playful smile, which got you everything you wanted from him, anyway. You tipped the drink up to his muzzle, which resulted in a harmless grumble before he opened his mouth with a subtle optic roll. You saw that, of course, and you ‘accidentally’ forgot to mention that it was still half full. You tipped the entire can into his mouth, and his reaction was priceless. He shook his head in utter disgust and his left optic twitched rapidly. Wow, a drink that could single-handedly take down a big, bad autobot like Ironhide? You thought to yourself with an amused smile upon your face, but you felt bad as a result, “It’s repulsive-Ratchet is such a liar," You raised a curious brow because you had no idea that Ratchet had mentioned the drink to anyone else, especially Ironhide. But then again, you weren’t surprised. But you felt kinda bad, so you leaned in while his expression was glitched in position, and nuzzled his adorable snoot with your own smallish nose. A double whammy. He was out for the count. A soft purr slipped as a result of his downed guard. He begged you for the rest of the day that it be mentioned to no one. Let’s just say, you told everyone. .
🖤🤍Jazz🖤🤍
“zero ultra”
“So this is the stuff that’s so popular amongst humans to drink, huh? I’ll give it a shot, just for you,” Jazz gave you a flirty smile, and picked you up to his level, the can firmly clenched and slightly dented in your grasp as a result of suddenly being snatched up without notice, “Bottoms up!” He opened his mouth, and practically fired it back like a shot from a quirky bar patron. He must’ve been a great party guy back on Cybertron. Jazz laughed aloud and pulled you closer to his face plate, “Nice. I hope you plan to get more, cus that stuff is bussin’,' ' You spewed the rest of your swig of the drink and choked ever the slightest as a result of his comment. It was then you realized where a lot of his current content and stylish lingo was coming from. You rolled your eyes and playfully tapped your fist to his face plate, “What? You don’t agree?” He shrugged and pressed his snoot to your face, giving you a gentle kiss. Jazz always gave the best kisses, despite the size factor. He spent the rest of his day in a peppy, rather hyperactive mood as a result. Ratchet was intrigued. Ironhide was...not so much.
[Author’s Note: I was, as stated above, locked out of my account after I lost access to my other account. I am not happy about it, but I am happy to share more of where I started from that account. I’m grateful for everyone’s comments, reactions, and enjoyments from this post, alone. <3]
can't sleep. posting updated Eda physiology diagram
more in-depth descriptions under the cut (feat. a rethinking of how dark energon/angolmois exists)
I use the term "cell-spawned" as a reference to how Armada Sideways was "grown from Unicron's own cells", implying there may be a difference between Unicronians that were once Cybertronians (ex. Galvatron) & those that were fully created by Unicron, like Sideways. or Eda.
cell-spawned Unicronians have 2 sets of major systems: molten metal & angolmois (dark energon)
the molten metal system is a vascular system equivalent, but a little different. ingested metals r smelted down until they're more liquid than solid (& as a consequence a Unicronian's internal temperature is extremely high), then passed through a network of arteries that deposit new metal around the antispark chamber & beneath external plating. this allows the antispark chamber to be reinforced even as its cargo slowly strips away the inner layer, & allows external weathering/surface-level injuries to be sheared off in favor of allowing new metal to grow underneath (which means neither Eda nor any cell-spawned Unicronian bears scars save for what they willfully upkeep). the metal is also infused with heat-resistant nanites once it enters the "bloodstream"; these nanites are what implant proximity sensors on exterior-facing plating & direct the flow of new metals to any pierced-armor injuries (the result of which leaves a scar that appears like a large weld, which can be sanded down or otherwise weathers away on its own). surface-level pierced-armor injuries are usually somewhat painless in the injured area, but release trapped heat & reduce mobility until that heat can be restored.
the dark energon aka angolmois system is, however, very different - where most things have interpreted angolmois as energon but Scary, in my mind it's more accurately an opposite: less fluid & more viscous like tar, a pitch-black that opalesces with deep purples & glitters like the night sky, and cold like the void of space. angolmois systems are more heavily-guarded than a Cybertronian's energon system; it is circulated usually where it is needed to cancel out or counterbalance the excessive heat generated by the molten metal systems (ex. the cpu/brain module & other finely-tuned systems), thus preventing a Unicronian from simply melting themselves down on accident. it also runs through major support structures like bone marrow, emitting a natural cooling that makes excessive heat integral to the use of limbs and digits, lest they grow frost - the rupture of an angolmois line is, thereby, equivalent in pain to a broken bone, & for a cell-spawned Unicronian who feels barely any or even no pain with more common & superficial scrapes, it is often a crippling injury. angolmois leaks are harder for the molten metal system to repair & often create systemic injuries by virtue of the extreme cold structurally compromising most metal it touches, & the damaged structures often require direct patching in order to aid the molten metal repair systems & prevent a total freeze-down. for cell-spawned Unicronians like Eda, angolmois can be naturally replenished by tapping into the entropy of the universe, whether that be through simply waiting (either lucid or in stasis) or artificially increasing localized entropy (i.e. causing problems & destruction & chaos wherever they are currently); for more severe cases the latter route is often necessary.
angolmois is still the most direct route to corruption, as it freezes & kills whatever it touches & often is difficult to recover from (ex. if some lands on a field of wildflowers, the wildflowers it lands on will die, along with the microorganisms living in that patch of soil. if it is removed, then only that place will have a dead area & over time will naturally repopulate; if it seeps into the ground, the entire field may die & will become hard or even impossible to repopulate a la the Prime Kindergarten from Steven Universe). for Cybertronians, coming in direct contact causes freezing injuries & in severe cases requires amputation. ingestion causes internal damage & generates and/or exacerbates inner turmoil(s).
any questions ?
AYO. MR WHAT'D YA MEAN BY THAT.
WHAT ABOUT YOUR FIC--
WHAT
ME EXCITED NOW.👀👀👀
It's not very interesting, I promise! Screamer foreshadowed it a tiny bit in chapter 7, unintentionally. It's mostly glossed over to focus on character moments. Here's a snippet from chapter 17:
But the real issue with Cybertron being "dead" is that Cybertronians/Transformers are basically the koalas or pandas of their planet in this AU. Their definition of habitability is super narrow cause despite being giant battle robots, their internal systems are stupidly delicate.
I'm gonna give in to temptation and paste my notes on the Cybertronian fuel processing system in here. You can probably pinpoint Starscream's fuel issues by reading through them. XD
——
FUEL PROCESSING
All Cybertronians have at least one fuel tank. Larger Cybertronians, such as titans or shuttles, may have a secondary fuel tank used to store extra fuel for long distance travel. When a Cybertronian with multiple fuel tanks intakes fuel, any overflow will go into their secondary tank. Those with a single tank will naturally stop before they reach that point unless their fuel level sensors are malfunctioning.
Proper fuel level sensor function is important, as fuel tanks are inflexible and have a fixed capacity. Cybertronians cannot vomit, and therefore cannot rid themselves of excess fuel, so intake beyond capacity can cause great harm to their systems.
From the fuel tank, fuel passes through a sediment filter, which picks up any debris in the fuel. Afterward, it passes through a fine filter, which removes unwanted molecules. Both filters send waste to the sublimation system, where it is turned to a gaseous form and released into the ventilation system. This gaseous release of waste is why many species must be wary of staying in a poorly ventilated space with a Cybertronian for extended periods of time, and why Cybertronian spaces are often so well ventilated in the first place.
Any waste that cannot be released in gaseous form is circulated back into the fuel lines, which is why it's important for Cybertronians to only intake proper fuels. Unlike their mechanimal relatives, Cybertronians cannot excrete solid or liquid waste. Accumulated waste from improper fuel requires medical intervention.
Defects of the filters may result in:
Buildup of sediment in filters, or, conversely, a buildup of sediment in fuel lines due to inability to filter
Delayed fuel tank emptying (due to obstruction/reduced flow)
Decreased fuel line pressure (typically due to the above)
Lethargy
Inappetance
Defects of the sublimation system may result in:
Straining of the fan system, and in severe cases, fogging or smoke
Abnormal core temperature (the sublimation system contributes greatly to internal heating)
Crystals in the fuel lines (from partially sublimated material)
Nutritional imbalances (due to loss of minerals or an inability to release excess minerals)
Lethargy
I really wanna share all of my notes at some point, but I'm afraid to cause I'm not the most knowledgeable guy in the world and I feel like an expert could poke giant holes in all of it. I developed these notes as I went, so stuff that isn't explicitly described in the fic is also subject to change.
I'm using this as an excuse to apply and abstract-ify stuff I'm learning in class, so it's mostly me going "Hey how can I make biology be robots" rather than "how can I make robots be biology."
Buuut... back to the point! See what I mean? These guys are super delicate and hyperspecialized to only consume energeon. When that runs out, they don't have any other options.
No energeon? Uninhabitable planet.
It was inspired by how it seems like they only consume energeon in TFOne, despite the deer appearing to graze. Not 100% sure if that's accurate, but the idea stuck in my brain and I wanted to play with it.
The "french kissing" of Cybertron
OK, this is some headcanon-level stuff, but loosely based on some canon stuff. Also it involves alien robot kissing and analogues.
In this previous post I had discussed the location of the hot spots/sparkfields and in doing so indicated that "Port Residua" was possibly located between Iacon and Nyon for reasons and I offhand-commented that Nyon was "Space Paris", while theorizing about why Port Residua might be called such.
(Nyon being Space Paris is not to be taken too literally, because Nyon is also simultaneously Space Athens and Space some-city-that-gets-destroyed. It's figuratively a place that had some revered and influential culture and political discourse, but also had its dark places and troubled times. But the idea is that French Hot Rod is not just a joke for the live-action movies and that bots from Nyon do have a regional culture and accent, just as bots from other city-states on Cybertron have their own recognizable accents and customs to other bots.)
OK, so remember "Port Residua" and that it's located in a culturally distinct region of Cybertron.
Now, do you know what "binomial data transfer" is? It's a kind of data transfer that bots can do which looks like kissing.
The mechanics of how Binomial Data Transfer works are not canon, but my headcanon concept for fics was that it works via some vestigial port that most bots have and which is located beneath the tongue/sensor nodule/glossa part in the mouth/intake part.
But here's the thing. It is a specific type of data port.
And it's there in bots even though Binomial Data Transfer isn't such a common thing in certain periods of Cybertronian history. Like, some bots don't even know why mouths would mash together, while others seem to.
It must be vestigial. Yes?
It's kinda functional but like some grandfather tech. Like, being legally mandated to receive AM band transmissions or something. A bot has this port in case another bot needs to mash their mouth into theirs to transmit end-of-life plans in a goodbye kiss as they go off to fight in the war.
It remains there. And it's a port.
Port Residua is possibly (your continuity may differ) along the coast of the Argon Sea.
But, what if Binomial Data Transfer was a more common practice there, near Nyon?
The 'remaining port' used to transfer plans regarding your wishes, requests and 'remains' to a bot you trust is associated with a region that itself is a port, a transfer area between gaseous sea, metal landforms, and liquid canals along which various storage yards and warehouses are located. (Headcanon: Eriel/Erial/Ariel is from Nyon and her spark came from Port Residua.)
Euphemistically to mash mouths and initiate Binomial Data Transfer is to "do it like bots in Nyon do".
Further headcanon: Hotlink is aromantic but fascinated with Binomial Data Transfer on a hardware basis. He's not romantically kissing a bot; he's experimenting with tech and taking samples, because tech is hot.
