Shoutout to the A5E/Levelup5e team. I found out about them recently and I really like what they have going on. Not only do they redesign a lot of base D&D 5E, but they're also removing a lot of the problematic gunk that's being described here.
"Monk" is now "Adept", "Barbarian" is now "Berserker", and "Paladin" is now "Herald". Just to give a quick example of the changes they're making. They're also very open about their use of cultural consultants and the diverse team working on it.
It's also backwards compatible! So you can still use your old 5e stuff like subclasses and 3rd party content. Cannot recommend checking it out enough just from what I've read so far.
If you're interested this is their website :)
If you wanna know how DnD is doing, in an effort to be less racist monk's now don't have ki they have discipline and use discipline points. Barbarians are fine as they are though I guess <3
obviously it is good to change 'class that punches people' away from being flavour-bound to weird orientalist mysticism shit but it is v. funny to do that and keep the barbarian class and also keep calling them that

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XV - Herald
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XV - Herald They've renamed the paladin, which is fine. I like some of these options, but I've not played as or with a paladin in ages, so not sure how it would go different to 5e. #ttrpg #dnd #levelup5e #playtest
Another class rename here – the paladin has become the herald. It makes some sense, and fits squarely the the genre of fantasy that the designers seem to be aiming at. Things that stay the same up to level 10:Divine Sense and Lay on Hands at level 1, Divine Smite at level 2, Oath features at levels 3 and 7, ASI at levels 4 and 8, and Extra Attack at level 5.Things that are gone:Spellcasting…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XIV - Warlock
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XIV - Warlock I play a lot of warlocks. This playtest packet was a little bit hit and miss for me. Some good ideas, some I really didn't like #ttrpg #dnd #levelup5e #playtest
Time to move on to a fun one – I play a lot of warlocks! Hopefully that means I’ll se both good and bad in the playtest. Let’s see shall we? Things that stay the same up to level 10:Otherworldly Patron features at level 1 (and 6 and 10) and Pact Magic at level 1 (though some changes with spells, see below), Eldritch Invocations at level 2 (though some changes going on thereafter), Pact Boon at…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XIII - Cleric
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XIII - Cleric Some cool abilities in this one, but a couple of mistakes that stood out, and I'm not sure about all the design choices. I'd still play this version of a cleric. #ttrpg #dnd #levelup5e #playtest
I may have been a bit lax keeping up with the playtest bundles for April, but there’s also been a lot more of them. So another burst of comparisons are coming your way over the next couple of weeks! Unlucky 13 brings us the Cleric. Let’s see what changes have been made. Things that stay the same up to level 10:Divine Domain and Spellcasting at level 1, Channel Divinity and a Domain Feature at…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XII - the Bard
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XII - the Bard This time we see the Battle Hymns and Art Masteries of the bards in full force. Some cool stuff in here, but there's abilities missing for two levels. #levelup5e #ttrpg #dnd
Hopefully this will catch me up with the playtest packets! So, on to the bard. I’ve played bard’s before, and after a quick look at the changes, I’d say they still hold my attention with the new options. Things that stay the same up to level 10:Bardic Inspiration and Spellcasting at level 1, Jack of All Trades at level 2, Bardic College at levels 3 and 6 (and a new one at 9th… That’s not going…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XI - The Wizard
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest XI - The Wizard In a complete change of pace, these new options really made me want to play a wizard - something I didn't think I'd say any time soon. Weird but fun options here. #dnd #levelup5e #playtest #ttrpg
Still running behind, here’s what’s going on with the changes to the Wizard. So I haven’t played a Wizard in a long time. After reading through this playtest packet, I think I might give one a go. I like that couple of big changes they’ve made here. So, without further ado: Things that stay the same up to level 10 (admittedly, not a lot to change with a Wizard):Arcane Recovery and Spellcasting…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest X - Adept
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest X - Adept Time to check out the hand-to-hand combat of the playtest's answer to the monk. I like the name change, I like most of the features, but can't assess it fully without subclasses. #dnd5e #levelup5e #playtest
I’m running a bit behind on these, so let’s see if I can catch up quick! It’s another new class! Sort of.The Adept replaces the Monk, since the latter has some weird connotations regarding monks and leans into some orientalist tropes. The Adept is a focussed unarmed fighter in all regards, using different fighting styles. First of all, a quick few of notes. The term ki that monks use in various…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e playtest IXb – Warlord again
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e playtest IXb – Warlord again Another additional playtest redux. This gives one extra ability at level 3, and explains followers and strongholds. They could have just skipped it, less changed than the ranger redux. #dnd #ttrpg
Much like with the ranger playtest previously, the warlord also gets an immediate variant. This time it didn’t feel like it was to shoehorn in mechanics for using magic, instead we’ve got a tiny change and some more explanations of how stuff works. At level 3 there’s a new ability called Mark Foe. Bonus action to give allies that can hear you an expertise die on attacks against a target in 30…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e playtest IXa - Warlord archetypes
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e playtest IXa - Warlord archetypes Some fun things in here and one badly written ability that needs a strong edit to fix. Gambling General, Peasant Lieutenant or the Tactical Commander are the choices. #ttrpg #dnd5e #playtest
As promised, let’s look at the warlord archetypes. The Gambling General is a go big or go home sort. Daring Commander at level 3 gives options of Daring Assault or Daring Charge.Daring Assult lets allies in the Commanding Presence roll attacks with a -5 penalty in return for a potential bonus 2d6 damage (going up to 3d6 at level 15).Daring Charge gives allies that start in the Commanding…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest IX – Warlord
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest IX – Warlord Part 1 of the look at this new (ish) class for 5e. I didn't compare the 4e class, maybe I will once this is out of playtesting? Quick review: I'd definitely play one. #ttrpg #dnd5e #levelup5e #playtest
It’s finally time to go beyond levels 1-10, and with a new class no less! The Warlord is a new build of the 4e core class of the same name. That class was a fighter who could buff their allies in a similar way to bards but without magic, and had some cool battlefield control effects.Let’s see how this version stacks up. So, as masters of tactics, they look pretty interesting, They’re built as a…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest VIII – Berserker
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest VIII – Berserker LevelUp 5e replaces barbarians with berserkers - which makes sense, but I'm really not sold on this version of the character class.
I messed up and scheduled this for the wrong date – this should have gone up on Saturday 9th but I’m just going to enjoy taking a day of time to relax a bit and work on other projects instead of stress and try and scrabble something together to get ahead again! I think it’s fair to say that the term ‘barbarian’ has some negative connotations, and that’s probably why we’re now looking at the…

Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest VIIa – Ranger Again
Thoughts on the LevelUp 5e Playtest VIIa – Ranger Again They added spellcasting back in, and you can hurt a horse to spare yourself now. #ttrpg #levelup5e #playtestreview
So the good folks at LevelUp 5e have issued another playtest for the ranger. I presume this is because of spells? Let’s take a look. Yup, spells. Because there are ranger subclasses that have spells, and LevelUp is supposed to be compatible with based D&D 5e, someone had to add a ruling on this.Seems like a pretty big thing to miss. And they really nerf them. You can only cast spells once per…
