Review: Opera, Chamber, and Orchestral Music @ Spoleto Festival USA
By Perry Tannenbaum
Recognition of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement and the We See You White American Theatre manifesto (issued by a coalition of BIPOC artists in 2020) were certainly on Nigel Redden’s mind when he decided that the 2021 Spoleto Festival USA would be his last as general director. ~ “This stunning Claymore, (Claidheamh M dir, or ‘Great Sword’ in Gaelic), more than 500 years old called the ‘Great Sword of Dunvegan’, is preserved and displayed on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, at Dunvegan Castle, home of the ‘famous’ McLeod clan since the 13th century. The sword is dated around the late XV or early XVI century, indicative of its presumed depiction on the tombstone of the 8th Clan leader Alasdair Crotach MacLeod, dated 1528. The blade is three feet (about 90 cm) long, and the steel it was forged with, normally imported from Germany, in this portfolio was manufactured in Scotland. For the forging, it appears to have been manufactured by the MacLeod of Suardal, blacksmiths of Dunvegan. The Isle of Skye, or simply Skye (/s k aɪ/; Scottish Gaelic: An t-Eilean Sgitheanach or Eilean a' Che ile; Scottish: Isle of Skye), is the largest and northernmost of the largest islands in the Inner Hebrids of Scotland. The island's penis radiate from a mountainous centre dominated by Cuillin, whose rocky slopes offer some of the most spectacular mountain landscapes in the country. Dunvegan Castle is Scotland's oldest continuously inhabited castle. Since 1933 it has been open to the public, leading to a substantial increase in tourism in the area. The castle has been visited by numerous prominent personalities, including writers Walter Scott and Samuel Johnson, Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and Emperor Akihito of Japan. Clan MacLeod (/m Mac ̪ɣ k l a / d/; Scottish Gaelic: Clann Mhic Le çid [ jkhl Cã aton n v coçkj ətj]) is a Scottish Highlands clan associated with the Isle of Skye. There are two main branches of the clan: the MacLeod of Harris and Dunvegan, whose head is MacLeod of MacLeod, are known in Gaelic as Siol Tormoid (’seed of Tormod’); the MacLeod clan of Lewis and Raasay, whose head is MacLeod of Lewes (Scottish Gaelic: Mac Ghille Chaluim), known in Gaelic as Siol Torcaill (’seed of Torcall’). Both branches claim to be descended from Le olod, who lived in the 13th century.“ ~

Ruth Inge Hardison (February 3, 1914 – March 23, 2016) was a sculptor, artist, and photographer, known for her busts entitled "Negro Giants in History". Her collection called "Our Folks", which features sculpted portraits of everyday people is of note. Her artistic productions surround historical African American portraiture, and she was interested in representing the unspoken voices of the African American past. She was the only female in the Black Academy of Arts and Letters. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia, her family moved to Brooklyn. She acted in the Broadway Productions of "Sweet River" and "Country Wife". She began sculpting as a hobby. When she took part in the year-long "What a Life" production, she created a sculpture of its cast, which was displayed at the Mansfield Theatre. She studied Music and Creative Writing at Vassar College. She studied at the Art Students League of New York and Tennessee State University. Her works begin as clay, wax, or plaster molds, and were cast into cast stone or bronze. Her first bust in that series was of Harriet Tubman, which measured eight inches in height; she has created busts of W. E. B. Du Bois, Paul Robeson, George Washington Carver, Frederick Douglass, Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Sojourner Truth, and Mary McLeod Bethune, among others. Her bronze Douglass bust, for example, was unveiled at Princeton's Firestone Library. Other public works include a 7-foot abstract figure called "Jubilee" which stands on the campus of Medgar Evers College, a series of 18 children on an outdoor wall of I.S.74 in Hunts Point in the Bronx, and a five-foot mother and child given to Mount Sinai Hospital to express her gratitude for their help in delivering her only child. She created a series of Ingenious Americans, little-known African American inventors and other notables commissioned and sold by Old Taylor Whiskey. The series of nine busts included Benjamin Banneker, Charles Richard Drew, Matthew Henson, Frederick McKinley Jones, Lewis Latimer, Garrett Morgan, Norbert Rillieux, Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, and Granville Woods. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence https://www.instagram.com/p/CoMzVt-rWfN/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

"Dems" Who Endorse Third Party Candidates Are Monsters. Zero Exceptions.
"Dems" Who Endorse Third Party Candidates Are Monsters. Zero Exceptions.
Back in 2018, when I was still living in Berkeley, I was really having a difficult time deciding who to vote for in a D-on-D assembly race between Buffy Wicks and Jovanka Beckles. Both seemed like solid people I'd be happy to have representing me in Sacramento, and I struggled to find much distinguishing the two.
Until I learned that Beckles had voted for Jill Stein in 2016. Suddenly, a hard choice became very easy. Wicks gets my vote (and she went on to win the election).
Fast forward a few years, to 2022. I now live in Oregon, a pretty reliably blue state. Except this year, our gubernatorial race includes not just the standard D-R matchup between Democrat Tina Kotek and Republican Christine Drazan. It also includes a well-financed "independent" candidate -- former Democratic State Senator Betsy Johnson,* well-known as among the most conservative Democrats in the caucus. Johnson, who has called Portland a "city of roaches", ran expressly because she couldn't tolerate a more liberal Democrat being the party's standard-bearer. Polling suggests an extremely tight race, and Johnson 's presence on the ballot could let the Republican slip into the governor's mansion with barely 30% of the vote.
The very thought makes me livid. The idea that in Oregon, in 2022, we might have a Republican Governor because some egomaniacal blue dog Dem just couldn't back her party's nominee is outrageous.
Among Johnson's endorsers is outgoing Democratic Rep. Kurt Schrader, in an obvious sore-loser move after he lost his primary to challenger Jamie McLeod-Skinner. I couldn't vote in that election -- I now live in Schrader's district, but I moved here a few weeks after the election -- and I certainly understood the pragmatic argument in favor of Schrader in a swing-y district. But Schrader himself? Absolutely dead to me. I shed zero tears for his demise.
There is nothing I have more contempt for than a nominal Democrat supporting a third party in a contested general election. It is terrible if it is a "from the left" protest vote for a middle-of-three-evils like Jill Stein. It is terrible if it is a "from the center" chin-stroker vote because the Democrat is "just too radical".
The current iteration of the Republican Party is a hairsbreadth away from being actual fascists. Stopping them from attaining political power is a moral obligation of the highest order. Very, very few things can trump that obligation. I can think of essentially no significant Democratic figure whose views or practices are so noxious as to trump that obligation. Yes, that includes every single member of the Squad. Yes, that includes Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema and Henry Cuellar. I don't care how annoying you find them. I don't care how valid your grievances are against them. None of them are worse than your typical 21st century Republican. If they are the general election nominee, and they're running against a Republican, you vote for them, and you do it with a smile.
* In researching this post, I learned the ultimate terrible fact: Johnson is a Carleton College alum. She also got her J.D. at Lewis & Clark. I am devastated.
