Some Oscar predictions for fun: in bold is what I think the Academy will pick. In italics is what I'd pick. If I leave italics off, I have no opinion or I don't think any of the nominees were that great. If I cross them out, I'm wondering why they were mentioned in the first place (Top Gun? Avatar? Really?).

Reblogged with the actual winners.
The only big surprise was Jamie Lee Curtis, but I guess they just had to give it to a white chick instead of Angela Bassett who has been shut out of a win for like, 30 years.
And Jimmy Kimmel can keep his day job. The Will Smith jokes were tasteless and too much tonight underlined all the racist/anti-Black sentiment out there (wasn't helped by that Entertainment Weekly set of anonymous interviews this past week).
But EEAAO making a clean sweep? Outstanding.

HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
August 15, 2022 (Monday)
Today, President Joe Biden congratulated the people of India on their 75th anniversary of independence, calling out the relationship between “our great democracies” and “our shared commitment to the rule of law and the promotion of human freedom and dignity.”
Yesterday, he lamented the recent knife attack on writer Salman Rushdie, calling out Rushdie’s “insight into humanity,…his unmatched sense for story,…his refusal to be intimidated or silenced,” and his support “for essential, universal ideals. Truth. Courage. Resilience. The ability to share ideas without fear. These are the building blocks of any free and open society. And today, we reaffirm our commitment to those deeply American values in solidarity with Rushdie and all those who stand for freedom of expression.”
But the news today is full not of the defense of democracy, but of those trying to overthrow it.
Emma Brown, Jon Swaine, Aaron C. Davis, and Amy Gardner of the Washington Post broke the story that after the 2020 election, as part of the effort to overturn the results, Trump’s lawyers paid computer experts to copy data from election systems in Georgia. The breach was successful and significant, although authorities maintain the machines can be secured before the next election. Led by Trump ally Sidney Powell, the group also sought security data from Michigan and Nevada, although the extent of the breaches there is unclear. They also appear to have worked on getting information from Arizona.
Georgia prosecutors have told Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani that he is a target in the criminal investigation of the attempt to alter the results of the 2020 presidential election in Georgia, letting him know it is possible he will be indicted.
Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has tried to quash a subpoena requiring his testimony before a Fulton County grand jury investigating Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election in Georgia, but today a federal judge, U.S. District Judge Leigh Martin May, said he must testify. She said that “the District Attorney's office has shown ‘extraordinary circumstances and a special need for Senator Graham's testimony on issues relating to alleged attempts to influence or disrupt the lawful administration of Georgia's 2020 elections.’"
And yet, the Big Lie that Trump won the 2020 election is still spreading. Amy Gardner in the Washington Post reports that 54 out of 87 Republican nominees in the states that were battlegrounds in 2020 are election deniers. Had they held power in 2020, they could have overturned the votes for Biden and given the election to Trump. In the 41 states that have already winnowed their candidates, more than half the Republicans—250 candidates in 469 contests—claim to believe the lie that Trump won in 2020.
In the issue of Trump’s theft of classified documents from the National Archives and Records Administration when he left office, over the weekend, Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush reported in the New York Times that last June, one of Trump’s lawyers signed a statement saying that all classified documents that had made it to Mar-a-Lago had been given back to the National Archives and Records Administration. But, of course, the FBI search of Mar-a-Lago last Monday revealed that assertion to be incorrect.
The statement was made after Jay I. Bratt, the Justice Department’s top counterintelligence officer, visited Mar-a-Lago on June 3. The House and Senate intelligence committees have asked Director of National Intelligence Avril D. Haines to provide the committees with a damage assessment of how badly Trump’s retention of top secret classified documents in an insecure location has damaged national security.
Today, the Department of Justice has asked a judge not to unseal the affidavit behind the search warrant for Mar-a-Lago, saying that it “implicates highly classified materials,” and that disclosing the affidavit right now would "cause significant and irreparable damage to this ongoing criminal investigation." CNN, the Washington Post, NBC News, and Scripps all asked the judge to unseal all documents related to the Mar-a-Lago search. But, “[i]f disclosed,” the Justice Department wrote, “the affidavit would serve as a roadmap to the government’s ongoing investigation, providing specific details about its direction and likely course, in a manner that is highly likely to compromise future investigative steps.”
Legal analyst and Harvard Law professor Laurence Tribe commented: “This suggests [the Department of Justice] wasn’t just repatriating top secret doc[ument]s to get them out of Trump’s unsafe clutches but is pursuing a path looking toward criminal indictment.”

ON THIS PRIDE MONTH PLEASE URGE YOUR SENATOR TO PASS THE EQUALITY ACT
If passed, the Equality Act would ban discrimination on the basis of sexuality. The immediate implication: lgbtq+ people could not be denied service on the basis of who they love.
You can read the full text of the Equality Act Here.

Name: Abigayle “Gayle” Whittemore
Story: Holy Trinity
Species: Fae Princess
Face claim:  Jenny Boyd
Love interest: Scott McCall & Allison Argent
Summary: When Abigayle Whittemore was young, she had been abandoned in a tree stump in the forest. However confusing that was, Abigayle decided to put that behind her and to lean on the certainties of her life. She had an adoptive brother with who she was attached to the hip; his girlfriend was her best friend, and, together, they all ruled over the school with iron fists. Everything was perfect, until sophomore year came and messed it all up. Scott McCall got hot and challenged Jackson’s place on the lacrosse team, a new girl showed up and took away all of Lydia’s attention, Lydia and Jackson broke up, and, as if that weren’t enough, they were all nearly murdered in the chemistry lab. And that’s before the truth about why she was abandoned in the forest begins to unravel.

After a chance encounter with Derek Hale, Adrien realizes just how far gone his aunt is, and he knows that he needs to stop her. Even if it means calling Jackson Hunter for help.
Tumblr media
Name: Adrienne Argent
Story: Sharp Teeth
AO3 | FFNet | Wattpad
Species: “Witchwolf”
Face claim:  Danielle Rose Russell
Love Interest: Liam Dunbar
Summary: Adrienne Argent had plenty of expectations when her family moved to Beacon Hills.  She’d expected to struggle with making friends; she’d expected it to take a few weeks to get to know the woods; she’d expected Allison to be immediately beloved; she’d expected to be cast aside once again.  She hadn’t expected to be attacked by a monstrous wolf on her first nightly jog; she hadn’t expected to grow claws and fangs and be able to move things with just a thought; she hadn’t expected her entire family to try to kill her; and she definitely hadn’t expected her only support system to be the one person who hated the Argents as much as she did.
Tumblr media
Name: Alcyone St. Stevens
Story: Seafoam (In My Veins)
Species: Siren
Face claim:  Kat McNamera
Love interest: Derek Hale
Summary:  Alcyone St. Stevens would love to say that she was fine, she really would, but being Kate Argent’s prisoner for five years really didn’t qualify as fine.  Ever since her powers presented themselves on her sixteenth birthday, the psychotic hunter had been torturing and experimenting on her.  She had given up on ever being rescued, when suddenly an unfairly attractive werewolf was thrown into the basement to join her.  Great, she figures, at least she can have some company while she’s tortured for the rest of her life.  She didn’t expect him to break out, let alone to take her with him, and now Alcyone owes Derek Hale a life debt - a debt she will find a way to repay, whether he likes it or not.
Tumblr media
Name: Alexis Argent
Story: Red Riding Hood
Species: Hunter
Face claim:  Nina Dobrev
Love interest: Lydia Martin, eventual Lydia Martin & Scott McCall
Summary: Alexis Argent loved to move, she really did.  New people, new places, new beginnings.  While her sister immediately fell in with the most popular kids in the school, Lexi preferred to fall into the background, observing.  After all, there had to be something behind why those two boys–Ally’s new boyfriend and his best friend–were acting so strange all the time.  And really, did they think they were subtle?  When her Aunt Kate showed up only a few days after they did, Lexi knew that something had to be up, and it took very little digging to learn about the family business.  But ignorance really was bliss, and it was time for her to decide.  Was her loyalty to her family, or to doing the right thing?

Face claim:  Camila Mendes
Love Interest: Lydia Martin
Summary: All Amara wanted to do with her junior year of high school was shop, hang out with her best girl Percy, and flirt with the cute boys on the opposing lacrosse team. She didn't want to find herself on a dead pool of supernatural creatures, transfer to the school of cute lacrosse boys, or find out that her "long dead" father was actually a god. But, at least Percy is with her every step of the way.

Summary: Arianne Martin left Beacon Hills with her dad when she was just thirteen years old.  A youtube video went viral, she got a recording contract, it was her dream come true.  But when her big sister is attacked and left for dead, neither hell nor high water will keep her away.  What’s supposed to be a short, relaxing visit soon becomes anything but, and clearly Arianne has to figure out exactly why those two dorks in her sister’s class keep whispering about her with her best friend–and now there’s an inhumanly attractive clique in leather jackets taking an interest too?  What happened to the Beacon Hills that she knew, and why does LA suddenly seem calm in comparison?

Or so she thinks, until she heads out onto the preserve and finds her best friend.  Only, instead of being sixteen, Derek is almost twenty-three, and the fire happened six years ago.

Love Interest: Sylvia Hale
Summary: "Men are soldiers, women are leaders." Avril Argent had known that, had always known what was expected of her. That was why she stayed with her family, even after her twin left. But when Adrien joins them in Beacon Hills, followed by their Aunt Kate, and then the last of the Hunters, Avril knows that she needs to step into her role and lead her family. If only Sylvia Hale weren't making her second guess everything she'd ever thought

Love Interest: Stiles Stilinski
Summary: It’s not that Belle Serpico never knew that she was different - after all, most people didn’t have to wear contacts for an eye condition that their parents refused to explain - but she never thought that she wasn’t normal. At least, not until her parents packed up their lives in New York and dragged their only daughter to Beacon Hills, California to start her sophomore year of high school. Not only does Belle learn that she isn’t normal, she might just be one of a kind.

Of course, after seven years without seeing him, Scott is nothing like she remembers. Gone is the scrawny asthmatic from her youth, now there’s a hot lacrosse captain in his place, but Carmen knows that there’s something more than just puberty behind the change. Her determination to solve the mystery of Beacon Hills takes her further down the rabbit hole than she ever expected, but by god she needs a new hobby.

Tumblr media
Name: Eden Dunbar
Story: Running With Wolves
Species: Redacted
Face claim:  Kaylee Bryant
Love Interest: Theo Raeken
Summary: It wasn't that Eden was particularly attached to Devenford Prep, she really wasn't.  She just resented that she was being sent to public school because of Liam's expulsion.  Still, there were some upsides; she was still with her twin, she could play lacrosse, and the workload was definitely more manageable.  Really, the only downsides were, well, public school, and the weird group of juniors who had become a bit obsessed with her brother.  Fine.  She would manage.  Surviving Liam's chaos was her area of expertise, it would be fine.  Or so she thought, until she found out that her brother was a werewolf, and her completely human name showed up on a supernatural hit list.

Face claim:  Lili Reinhart
Love Interest: Scott McCall & Stiles Stilinski
Summary: Elsa Lahey considered herself a pretty rational person. She believed in facts, and only facts, and she could always count on that. And then things started to change. First Isaac, stronger and more confident than she'd ever seen him; then her dad, dying of unnaturally natural causes; Matt Daehler takes her hostage while controlling a weird lizard monster; werewolves are real. And then Elsa Lahey dies. And wakes up.

Name: Fiona Krasikeva
Story: Haunted
Species: Human
Face claim:  Madison McLaughlin
Love Interest: Stiles Stilinski & Scott McCall
Summary: As a child, Fiona had never believed in the Krasikeva Doppelgänger stories that she’d heard; not until she realized that she was the spitting image of her cousin Paige. And if she were the first Doppelgänger in centuries, that meant that the rest of the stories had to be true too: werewolves and druids and hunters and more. And then Paige got murdered by a werewolf, killing any doubt that Fiona could have had. For the next eight years, Fiona spent every day training herself as a hunter, and finding hunters to train her. She knew that one day she wouldn’t be the only, well, non-human in Beacon Hills, and she wanted to be prepared.  And when she sees Scott McCall stumbling out of the woods one morning, she knows that day has come.

Tumblr media
Name: Jax Hunter
Story: H(a)unt
Species: Hunter
Face claim:  Dominic Sherwood
Love Interest: Adrien Argent & Derek Hale
Summary: The Hunter family was, unsurprisingly, the original family of hunters. Long before the Argents came into the picture, the Hunters had been ruling Europe with a different code. Protect the innocent and hunt the guilty, regardless of species. And Jackson - Hunter - had always abided by that. He would just as soon protect innocent supernatural creatures from guilty hunters as he would protect innocent humans from guilty supernatural creatures. After his parents were killed - and he had his suspicions about that - he'd spent years on his own. And that's when he met Adrien Argent. The two spent several months together, hunting and learning how to live without their parents. They'd parted ways amicably, with a promise to come if the other needed them. But Hunter never expected Adrien to call him to Beacon Hills to help him deal with Kate Argent - the same woman who he suspected of murdering his parents.

Name: Luna Hale
Story: Beautiful Ghosts
Species: Werewitch
Face claim:  Danielle Campbell
Love interest: Isaac Lahey, eventual Scott McCall
Summary:  When the Hale House burned down, Cora ran.  Laura and Derek ran too, the other way.  They didn’t even check for survivors; but there were two.  Peter Hale, barely conscious, shielding his then seven year old niece with his body.  While Peter would be comatose for almost a decade, Luna only had to heal from the burns and smoke inhalation, before she was immediately taken in by her godmother–Claudia Stilinski.  She changed her name to Stilinski, of course, in case any hunters tried to finish the job, and most of Beacon Hills didn’t know that she’d ever been anyone else.  And she could have maintained that illusion for the rest of her life, had her idiot brother not dragged she and their best friend Scott out to look for a body.
Tumblr media
Name: Natasha Reyes
Story: Rebirth
Species: Redacted
Face claim:  Zoey Deutch
Love Interest: Derek Hale
Summary: Despite expectations, Natasha Reyes had never resented her sister. Yes, her parents paid a lot more attention to Erica, but Erica was also sick and needed a lot more help. She would never blame Erica for that, and she was perfectly fine with the way things were. At least, until Erica suddenly stopped being sick, got super hot and bitchy, and started treating Natasha like shit. But just when Natasha started to get used to the new status quo, she got hit by a car. And Natasha Reyes died.

Tumblr media
Name: Percy Flowers
Story: Eternal
Species: Demigoddess
Face claim:  Vanessa Morgan
Love Interest: Scott McCall
Summary: When Percy said that she wanted to end things with Brett, she didn't mean that she wanted him to be nearly murdered by supernatural assassins, thank you. But nonetheless, the near assassination set her off on a path that she never could have seen coming; a path of family mysteries, cute werewolves, dead pools, and an impossible heritage. Her only comfort is knowing that Amara is in the same boat as she is, even if it means that they're both on a hit list now too.
Tumblr media
Name: Raegan Stilinski
Story: Regrets Collect
Species: Human
Face claim: Jennifer Morrison
Love interest: Chris Argent
Summary:  Raegan Stilinski had never planned on moving back to Beacon Hills.  She had graduated high school, and then fled to pursue her dream of working for the FBI.  She kept in touch with her older brother, went to Claudia’s funeral, and Stiles spend a month every summer staying with her, but Beacon Hills was in her past, and Raegan was looking forward.  Until her latest assignment sends her straight back home to investigate the recent oddities in the usually quiet small town.  Stiles being in the middle of it doesn’t surprise her in the slightest but coming face to face with her ex boyfriend Chris, and finding out that he’s somehow involved in the whole mess?  Well, that might be a bit of a surprise.

Story: (When We Fall) We Rise Again
Species: Redacted
Face claim: Lucy Hale
Love Interest: Isaac Lahey & Scott McCall
Summary: The Stilinski twins are survivors, they always have been.  Sure, roll your eyes, the spastic nerdy loser and his vapidly popular twin sister, survivors?  But they are.  They survived losing their mother.  They survived their father’s period of alcoholism.  They survived being on opposite ends of the social ladder in high school.  And now Stiles is pulling away from Scout, and keeping secrets for the first time in their lives.  But, they’ll survive that too, even if it’s the last thing they do.  The Stilinski twins have survived everything life has thrown at them, they can survive werewolves, hunters, and long lost family secrets.
Tumblr media
Name: Selena McCall
Story: The Moon And Her Wolf
AO3 | FFNet | Wattpad
Species: Human
Face claim:  Emeraude Toubia
Love interest: Derek Hale
Summary:  The moment she turned 18, Selena McCall was out of Beacon Hills and on her way to New York. Religion, mythology, and occultism had fascinated her ever since she found out about the werewolves in Beacon Hills and it was a no brainer to choose NYU, with one of the best programs she could find. Imagine her shock, though, when she sits next to Derek Hale on her first day, the same Derek Hale who’d been her best friend right up until the point he disappeared off the face of the Earth. It took no time at all to rekindle their bond, or to find a second family with the last surviving Hales. Everything is perfect. Then Laura goes missing. Selena is right by Derek’s side the moment he starts for California, determined to find her pseudo-sister. Except, back in her home town, nothing is how she left it, and Selena finds herself torn between her baby brother and her best friend, with no clue how to keep either, let alone both, of them alive.

Story: H(a)unt
Species: Werewolf
Face claim:  Claire Holt
Love Interest: Avril Argent
Summary: After her family was brutally murdered in a fire, and her father left comatose, Sylvia Hale never wanted to set foot in Beacon Hills again. No, she would have happily spent the rest of her life on the other side of the country with Derek and Laura. But then Laura has to go back, and goes missing, and Sylvia finds herself back in the one place she swore to never return to. She thought that she could handle it, that they could find Laura and go home. But Laura is dead, and the Argents are back, and Sylvia wouldn't know how to handle any of that without Avril Argent coming into the picture.
Tumblr media
Name: Terra Smith
Story: When The Kill Time Comes
Species: Elemental
Face claim:  Shay Mitchell
Love interest: Stiles Stilinski & Scott McCall
Summary: Terra Smith barely remembered her life before Eichen House. She has one, she knew that much, but in her earliest, her parents were dropping her on the front steps of the asylum, where she would spend the next decade being experimented on with no hope of reprieve.  No hope, that is, until the mysterious Stiles Stilinski shows up one day.  She doesn’t talk to him, she’s not allowed out of her room, but apparently he noticed her, and soon she finds herself out of Eichen House and among his friends.  Before Terra can even get over the shock of being free for the first time she can remember, she’s learning that not only do supernatural creatures exist, but that she is one, and that the lifetime of experiments was Eichen House trying to find out what she was.  She’ll deal with that mystery soon enough, but first apparently they need to figure out who’s behind this apparent Dead Pool of supernatural creatures.
Tumblr media
Name: Willa Morgenstern
Story: Silver Moon
Species: Redacted
Face claim:  Olivia Holt

No matter who wins the 2020 presidential election, they won’t be able to get much done if their party doesn’t also win the Senate. Historically, the presidential election results in a given state have tracked closely with the Senate outcome there, and the two are only coming into closer alignment (in 2016, for example, the presidential and Senate outcome was the same in every state). But partisanship isn’t the only factor in Senate races (yet); a senator’s popularity can still make a difference. That’s why, today, we’re unveiling a metric of a senator’s political standing that takes both partisanship and popularity into account.
With the help of Morning Consult, which polls the approval ratings of U.S. senators every quarter, we’ve created a statistic that I’m playfully calling Popularity Above Replacement Senator (PARS). It’s based on the same premise as my Popularity Above Replacement Governor (PARG) statistic1 — that it’s a good idea to think about politicians’ popularity in the context of their states’ partisanship. PARS, like PARG, is calculated by measuring the distance between a politician’s net approval rating (approval rating minus disapproval rating) in her state and the state’s partisan lean (how much more Republican- or Democratic-leaning it is than the country as a whole).2 Take West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin as an example. According to the latest Morning Consult poll, which covered the first three months of 2019, Manchin had a +5 net approval rating. That may not look like anything special, but it’s actually quite impressive because Manchin is a Democrat in one of the reddest states in the nation (R+30). Accordingly, he leads all senators with a +35 PARS.

A Democratic senator with a net approval of +2 in an R+7 state has a PARS of +9 (2+7 = 9). If the same state had a Republican senator with the same approval rating, the PARS would be -5 (2-7= -5).
Independent Sens. Angus King and Bernie Sanders are considered Democrats for these calculations.
Shaded rows denote senators whose seats are up in 2020, excluding those senators who are not seeking reelection.
* Partisan lean is the average difference between how a state votes and how the country votes overall, with 2016 presidential election results weighted at 50 percent, 2012 presidential election results weighted at 25 percent and results from elections for the state legislature weighted at 25 percent. The partisan leans in this article were calculated before the 2018 elections; we haven’t calculated FiveThirtyEight partisan leans that incorporate the midterm results yet.
Sources: Morning Consult, media reports
Like we did for PARG, we can use PARS as a tool to assess the 2020 Senate elections — specifically, to give us clues about which of the senators whose seats are up in 2020 might be poised to over- or underperform their party’s presidential ticket.
That conversation starts with Sen. Doug Jones, who comes in at No. 2 in PARS with a score of +33. Jones is a Democratic senator in R+27 Alabama, so he’s fighting an uphill battle. And if he is able to maintain a positive net approval rating (it’s +6 currently), that will be a sign of life for his candidacy.
Republican Sen. Susan Collins is another senator who hopes to overcome the partisan lean of her state (Maine is 5 points more Democratic-leaning than the nation) to win reelection. Her net approval rating in the Morning Consult poll has been on the decline over the past two years, but she still has a solid +13 net approval rating. The question is whether the results in 2020 will be closer to her net approval rating or Maine’s light-blue partisanship; splitting the difference yields a race that leans (or tilts) Republican, which is exactly where major election handicappers have it.
Similarly, if you were to look at state partisanship alone, you might assume that Democratic Sens. Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Mark Warner of Virginia and Tina Smith of Minnesota are electorally vulnerable. But PARS reveals why the handicappers aren’t so sure. They all sit in closely divided states (from R+2 for New Hampshire to D+2 for Minnesota), yes, but they are all also quite popular. Shaheen has a +21 net approval rating, Warner has a +19 net approval rating and Smith has a +18 net approval rating.
Unlike this trio, there are some senators whose electoral fates probably do hinge on the presidential race. Those include Republican Sens. Cory Gardner of Colorado, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Thom Tillis of North Carolina and John Cornyn of Texas. Each has a PARS between +1 and -3, indicating that their net approval rating is in line with their states’ partisan lean. If the Democratic presidential nominee carries their states (admittedly, this will be easier for Colorado than for Texas), the party may get a Senate seat as a bonus.
Finally, the senator who ranks last in PARS is also up for reelection in 2020, and it’s a big name: Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. McConnell manages just a -13 net approval rating despite inhabiting an R+23 state. It’s not crazy to think he could be vulnerable in 2020. Democrats are reportedly trying to recruit former Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath, who raised $8.6 million for an unsuccessful 2018 congressional bid, to run against him. But it’s worth remembering that Lucy has held this football in front of Democrats before. In 2014, McConnell also had popularity problems, and Democrats thought they had a top candidate to challenge him in Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes. McConnell beat Grimes 56 percent to 41 percent.
Check out all the polls we’ve been collecting ahead of the 2020 elections.

But 49 senators—fully half the upper house that represents our grand republic—do not. So, hey, you go out there and burn whatever carbon you want to? Not sure what to make of that. BREAKING:Trump Wins Florida, Locked In Other Tight Races With Biden.
Tumblr media
Trump additionally guaranteeing the landmarks of Ohio and Iowa while Biden won Minnesota and Iowa, two unassuming prizes the president had would have liked to take.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Races were too soon to bring in some of other savagely challenged and basic states on the guide, including North Carolina, Georgia and Pennsylvania. The president, by early Wednesday, had held numerous states he won in 2016 and, as since quite a while ago anticipated, the race to some degree appeared to lay on the three northern modern states where Trump most shocked the Democrats long term back Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Biden, quickly showing up before allies in Delaware, asked persistence, saying the political decision “ain’t over until each vote is checked, each polling form is tallied.”
“It’s not my place or Donald Trump’s place to announce who’s won this political race,” Biden said. “That is the choice of the American public.”
Trump additionally tweeted that he planned to say something.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
A great many citizens overcame their stresses over the infection — and some long queues — to turn out face to face, joining 102 million individual Americans who casted a ballot days or weeks sooner, a record number that spoke to 73% of the absolute vote in the 2016 official political decision.
Early outcomes in a few important landmark states were in motion as political decision authorities prepared a truly enormous number of mail-in votes. Leftists regularly outflank Republicans in mail casting a ballot, while the GOP hopes to make up ground in Election Day turnout. That implies the early edges between the competitors could be impacted by which sort of votes — early or Election Day — were being accounted for by the states.
Florida was the greatest, wildly challenged milestone on the guide, with the two missions engaging over its 29 Electoral College votes.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Trump received Florida as his new home state, charmed its Latino people group, especially Cuban-Americans, and held meetings there unremittingly. As far as concerns him, Biden sent his top substitute — President Barack Obama — there twice in the mission’s end days and profited by a $100 million vow in the state from Michael Bloomberg.
Control of the Senate was in question, as well: Democrats expected to net three seats if Biden caught the White House to oversee all of Washington without precedent for 10 years. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky won re-appointment in an early triumph for the Republicans, and GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a nearby Trump partner, fended off a furious test to cling to his seat.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
The gatherings exchanged a couple of seats other early outcomes: Democratic previous Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper vanquished officeholder Sen. Cory Gardner, and in Alabama Republican Tommy Tuberville knocked off Sen. Doug Jones. The House was required to stay under Democratic control.
As the outcomes came in, the country prepared for what was to come — and a result that probably won’t be known for quite a long time.
Biden was watching from home with family and close helpers. Trump was watching the outcomes come in with a little gathering of partners in the White House home as other staff and guides drifted between a gathering at the White House living arrangement and different workplaces all through the chief manor complex.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Outside, another enemy of scaling wall was raised around the White House, and in midtowns from New York to Denver to Minneapolis, laborers barricaded organizations in case the vote lead to agitation.
With the most exceedingly awful general wellbeing emergency in a century still furiously present, the pandemic — and Trump’s treatment of it — was the certain concentration for 2020.
For Trump, the political decision remained as a judgment on his four years in office, a term wherein he twisted Washington to his will, tested confidence in its establishments and changed how America was seen over the globe. Seldom attempting to join a nation partitioned along lines of race and class, he has regularly gone about as a radical against the administration he drove while sabotaging the country’s researchers, organization and media.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
Biden went through the day a minute ago battling in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he was conceived, and in Philadelphia with several neighborhood stops in Wilmington, Delaware, where he was spending Election Night.
The energy from early democratic conveyed into Election Day, as an invigorated electorate created long queues at surveying locales all through the nation. Turnout was higher than in 2016 in various districts, including the entirety of Florida, practically every area in North Carolina and in excess of 100 areas in both Georgia and Texas. That count appeared sure to increment as more districts detailed their turnout figures.
Electors overcame stresses of the Covid, dangers of surveying place terrorizing and desires for long queues brought about by changes to casting a ballot frameworks, yet seemed determined as turnout showed up it would effortlessly outperform the 139 million voting forms cast four years back.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push();
No serious issues emerged on Tuesday, outside the average glitches of an official political decision: Some surveying places opened late, robocalls gave bogus data to electors in Iowa and Michigan, and machines or programming failed in certain districts in the milestone conditions of Ohio, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Texas.
The online protection organization at the Department of Homeland Security said there were no outward signs by noontime of any noxious action.
The record-setting early vote — and lawful skirmishing over how it would be checked — drew unsupported claims of misrepresentation from Trump, who had consistently wouldn’t ensure he would respect the political decision’s outcome.

The 13 Races That Will Determine The Senate Majority
— NPR | October 29, 2020 | Susan Davis
Tumblr media
President Trump campaigned with Sen. Martha McSally, R-Ariz., in Prescott, Ariz., this month. McSally is a top target of Senate Democrats, who are hoping to flip her seat blue on Election Day. Alex Brandon/AP
Republicans hold the Senate 53-47. (There are two independents — Angus King of Maine and Bernie Sanders of Vermont — but they caucus with Democrats and therefore should be counted that way in the math for Senate control.)
To flip the Senate, Democrats would need to net-gain four seats outright or three seats and control of the White House, because in a 50-50 Senate — which is possible this year — the vice president breaks the tie. Republicans can lose up to three seats and hold the majority, as long as President Trump wins reelection.
Democrats are forecast to gain two to six seats. Control of the Senate remains a jump ball days out from Election Day. These are the races that will decide it:
Democratic-held seats (Republicans favored to gain one seat)
Alabama: Sen. Doug Jones is the only Democratic incumbent in a tough race this year. He is expected to lose to former Auburn University football coach Tommy Tuberville, the Republican challenger. Trump remains wildly popular in Alabama, and it would be very difficult for Jones to overcome that advantage in a nationalized political climate. A Republican pickup here would mean Democrats would need to pick up four GOP-held seats and win the White House for Senate control.
Republican-held Seats (Democrats Favored to Gain Two to Six Seats)
Arizona: GOP Sen. Martha McSally is running against Democrat Mark Kelly, the popular and well-known former astronaut turned gun control advocate after the 2011 Tucson shooting of his wife, then-Rep. Gabby Giffords, D-Ariz. Kelly has led in all but one public poll in 2020. Kelly has also significantly outraised McSally.
Colorado: Republican Sen. Cory Gardner is running against former Gov. John Hickenlooper, a former 2020 Democratic presidential candidate. Hickenlooper initially indicated he was not interested in a Senate run but jumped in after his presidential campaign faded. He has run a lackluster campaign, but the overall Democratic pull of the state is probably enough to carry Hickenlooper to victory.
Iowa: First-term GOP Sen. Joni Ernst is running against real estate developer Theresa Greenfield. This race has gotten increasingly competitive in the closing months of the campaign. Ernst had been the early favorite for reelection, but the race has become a toss-up in the close.
Maine: Republican Sen. Susan Collins is running against Democrat Sara Gideon, the state's House speaker. Few others have seen their political stock fall as fast as Collins has. Once one of the most popular senators in the U.S., she now ranks at the bottom. The polarization of the Trump era has done no favors for centrist moderates. Collins is a savvy campaigner and knows her state and how to win, but Gideon has been able to capitalize on Collins' sinking political clout and anti-Trump sentiment.
Montana: Republican Sen. Steve Daines is running against term-limited Democratic Gov. Steve Bullock, arguably the only Democrat who could make Montana competitive for the party. Bullock is well-known and has generally been given decent marks by voters for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic. Montana is a red state that wants to stay that way, and that helps Daines. A Bullock victory would be a telling sign of a broader Democratic wave.
North Carolina: Republican Sen. Thom Tillis is running against attorney Cal Cunningham, a former state senator. This is widely viewed as the tipping-point race — whoever wins here will likely represent the party in control of the Senate. Cunningham had all the advantages, but late-breaking reports of marital infidelity will test whether old-school political scandals still register with voters.
Potential Election Night Surprises
Alaska: GOP Sen. Dan Sullivan is running against orthopedic surgeon Al Gross, who is technically an independent but will appear on the ballot as a Democrat. Trump won Alaska by 16 points in 2016, and Sullivan should be able to pull out a win. But Gross has run a surprisingly strong campaign aided by waves of grassroots Democratic fundraising, including after the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. There isn't regular or reliable polling in this race.
Georgia 1: Republican Sen. David Perdue is running against Democrat Jon Ossoff, best known for running and losing a high-profile 2017 special election for a U.S. House seat. Perdue has been a Trump loyalist in a state that is increasingly more purple than red. Republicans are bullish that Perdue can win reelection, but the risk of a Jan. 5 runoff is real unless a candidate wins at least 50%. A third-party candidate, Libertarian Shane Hazel, is complicating that path.
Georgia special election: Appointed GOP Sen. Kelly Loeffler is running to serve out the term of former Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson, who retired early for health reasons. Loeffler is a wealthy businesswoman. If no candidate gets at least 50% — which is unlikely — the top two vote-getters go to a Jan. 5 runoff. Loeffler has to fend off both a Republican challenge from Rep. Doug Collins and the top expected Democratic vote-getter, Raphael Warnock. Warnock is a civil rights leader and pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, the same church where Martin Luther King Jr. served. If control of the Senate comes down to Georgia, it might not be known until January 2021.
Kansas: This is an open-seat race because Republican Sen. Pat Roberts is retiring. Republican Rep. Roger Marshall is running against doctor and state Sen. Barbara Bollier. Marshall is the GOP establishment's pick and is favored to win. Bollier is a Republican turned Democrat who has focused on her medical background during the pandemic.
South Carolina: Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham is running against former Democratic congressional aide Jaime Harrison. Trump won South Carolina by 14 points in 2016, and Graham has transformed from Trump critic to Trump champion since then. Harrison has been able to turn a long-shot bid into a well-funded campaign that is polling competitively. The conservative roots of the state keep Graham as favored to win. A loss could be an indication of a massive Democratic-wave election.
Texas: Republican Sen. John Cornyn is favored against Democratic challenger MJ Hegar and has consistently led in public polling. A Democratic victory here would be a major upset and would likely be contingent on a surprise Joe Biden win in the state. Texas is also seeing a surge in voter turnout across the state, fueling Democratic hopes that the polls are wrong and 2020 is the year Texas goes blue.
