So ive been using linux for a good while now, and its now officially my daily driver. Windows is now permabenched in a removed hhd in a drawer unless something awful happens. (Good riddance, havent truly enjoyed windows since xp)
And from this I think that people urging others to move to linux are not doing so in the correct way.
Instead of trying to push a friendly distro and insisting it will work for everything and everyone, instead check if the hardware they are using specifically is good for linux and if so what families.
One computer will be a breeze with any distro, another could have a few quirks but be basically fine, however another of the same year and manufacturer could be an uphill battle thats straight up unusable even for someone who knows how to do the kernel edit workarounds for all but specific distros, if that.
My desktop took linux mint like a dream, 100% painless with no fucking about to make it work and even no need for an ethernet cable to get things started. My dinosaur laptop (may it rest in peace after other components died) had a few issues but also worked very well with little effort with mint. My current junk laptop is an uphill battle that will require arch AND edits to the kernel paremeters to work without being filled with screen flashing and full system freezes at random and im still gearing up the gumption to give it another few attempts to actually pull it off.
Each of these computers is a VERY different experience, and if your prospective switcher is using a computer that doesnt play well, its NOT going to work, they will get frustrated, and they will give up. They have to work with what they have.
Instead of going right to telling them to switch and that anything is good, Encourage people to search up their pc+linux compatibility if they are looking to switch to determine if its viable for a newbie who doesnt want to struggle, then offer a distro that has a live usb/dvd version if possible for them to test without install, and a big enough userbase that troubleshooting is as painless as possible.
If its a laptop, archwiki has lists of those by maker (linked in the page given) with notes on what has been tested in that family of linux.
This, I think, above all, is the most important thing when trying to get people to switch:
MAKE SURE THEIR HARDWARE IS GOOD FOR IT
Not just the pc, but the peripherals too; their mouse, their mic, their webcam, their keyboard- these things are not always supported well.
Linux can be fast, easy, and really comfortable and painless with little to no troubleshooting or tedious workarounds to get your stuff to work; but you have to be using the right hardware.
Yes, make sure you have alternative programs lined up that are actually good (stop reccing gimp when krita is a way better P$ alternative for people trying to draw digitally), and maybe consider talking about how to run wine in a newbie friendly way for things they might need for work reasons that dont work on linux normally(and accept that it might not work even with wine), but above all, make sure that its not just being phrased as 'a you problem' when it might be their system that is the issue there.
For prospective switchers that tried but gave up because of glitches or freezes or things otherwise not working: It wasnt you being bad at computers. Sometimes it just doesnt work with that hardware well and there is nothing you can do. People dont warn you about this, but its a very real issue.
If you still want to try linux, when you eventually get a new computer in the future, look for one that seems to be supported by linux well- some pcs even come with linux preinstalled for you even (dell does this with ubuntu and ubuntu has skins that looks windows esque). Asking specifically for linux compatible or linux preinstalled computers signals to developers to make more computers that work with linux, and makes it easier to get linux friendly stuff.
If not, there are windows 11 neutering tools out there in the wild that are very useful and are a plenty fine alternative to switching. You should only switch if you want to switch.
#wayward rambling#long post#linux#rebloggable#its also worth assessing for their ability and desire to debug themselves via google fu and command line instead of taking it to A Guy#but number one is checking the hardware!! You cant do shit if the hardware isnt good for it!!#this sort of went in whatever direction oh well

When designing an interface, imagine that your program is all that stands between the user and hot, sweaty, tangled-bedsheets-fingertips-digging-into-the-back sex.
Command Line Fu [Explained]
Transcript Under the Cut
[Two men talking.]
Cueball: Last night I was watching videos with this girl and my monitors kept turning off - even though I had disabled power save. Friend: Odd.
Cueball: However! I wrote a command to jiggle the mouse pointer every couple minutes to keep it from going idle.
Friend: Not the first hack I'd try, but see? Linux has problems, but it gives you the tools to deal with them - and save your date! Cueball: Actually, I was half an hour into the pointer scripting documentation when she got dressed and left.

PSA regarding Win11 13th August update and Ubuntu partitions
Just in case any other simmers (or anyone using Win11 and Linux Ubuntu on the same device) are experiencing this: After installing the latest update for Windows 11, I could not boot my Linux system, instead getting a message saying "something has gone seriously wrong - security policy violation." Using F12 boot options, I managed to get back onto my Windows desktop - but all my Sims stuff is on Linux, so...
Here's how it can be fixed. With some help from my mum's incredible librarian google-fu, I discovered that pressing the F12 key while starting up your PC to access setup options, then going to the Boot option and disabling Secure Boot, was the necessary fix for this issue. I'm on my Linux desktop now, typing this up for anyone else having the same issue.
Note that I did not figure this out myself. My mum did the search for fixes and found someone else who'd had and resolved the same problem, so full credit to them for finding the solution. I wish I had the link, or at least their online name, but just to repeat: this is not my fix. (Edit: Mum also found the name: Berry Win) Either way, I'm putting this on my blog so that anyone else experiencing this can (hopefully) sort it too.

This is horrible news, though it is not surprising. And it's about to get much, MUCH worse. Next year, Microsoft will kill Windows 10, and 11 has a much more strict set of hardware requirements. Just in my org alone, I know how much shit we're going to have to throw out. Many are perfectly fine computers (would make excellent Linux boxes), just a 7th gen CPU is "holding it back."
MEANWHILE, those motherfuckers at M$ have the audacity to greenwash themselves when they're actively making the problem so much worse. AND WINDOWS 11 CAN RUN ON "UNSUPPORTED" HARDWARE.
Don't get me fucking started on Apple either and the parameters for which something is "obsolete." It's going to be bad when they kill off the Intel Macs, I'm sure.
I know I'm screaming into the void here, but this shit is killing me inside and all I can do is complain while corporations fuck our assholes wide open.
I also understand that hardware cannot be supported forever. There has to be a cutoff. But I do not believe there are legitimate reasons for this cutoff. I have installed Win 11 on "unsupported" hardware MYSELF. I know that it is a lie, and that the push to force people onto newer hardware is financially motivated and not due to impossible technical limitations.
I know that I sound like a tinfoil hat conspiracist. I am rambling out of frustration, after all. But, what I have said here is all provable. If you are interested in this topic, please research further and don't just take my word for it. Sorry again for the rant.

Cassandra Crossing/ Archivismi: archiviamo Cassandra, parte prima
New Post has been published on https://www.aneddoticamagazine.com/it/cassandra-crossing-archivismi-archiviamo-cassandra-parte-prima/
Cassandra Crossing/ Archivismi: archiviamo Cassandra, parte prima
Prosegue poi su altre testate come Zeusnews.it, talvolta in parallelo.
“Madornale errore”, come usa dire Jack Slater.
562_Cassandra-Crossing — Archivismi — l-organizzazione-dei-documenti-in-Internet-Archive.html
Capirlo a grandi linee è sufficiente.
# Procedura per la preparazione all’archiviazione degli articoli # di Cassandra Crossing # # inizializzazioni varie _base=”./tuttocassandra_elaborazione/” _base2=”./posts/” _base3=”./markdown/” _base4=”./temp/” _base5=”./html/” _base6=”./pdf/” _temp=”temp.txt” # # cambio directory di lavoro, creazione directory e pulizia file cd “$_base” mkdir markdown html temp pdf rm ./markdown/* ./html/* ./temp/* ./pdf/* cd “$_base2” rm “$_temp” _dfiles=”*” # # inizio loop principale for f in $_dfiles do rm “$_temp” # # estrazione del numero dell’articolo g=`grep -Eo -m 1 ‘\([0–9]+\)’ $f | tr -d ‘()’` g=”000″$g g=`echo $g | rev | cut -c 1–3 | rev` h=`echo $f | cut -d ‘_’ -f2- | rev | cut -d ‘-’ -f2-| rev` # # formazione del nuovo nome del file e copia col nuovo nome i=$g”_”$h echo “ — -> Identifier: $i” cp $f “../$_base4$i.html” # # conversione in formato markdown, ripulitura e riconversione in html pandoc -f html -t markdown “../”$_base4$i”.html” > “$_temp” grep -v “^:::” “$_temp” |sed -e ‘s|#.*||g’ > “../”$_base3$i”.md” pandoc — self-contained -f markdown -t html “../”$_base3$i”.md”> “../”$_base5$i”.html” pandoc — pdf-engine=xelatex -f markdown -t pdf “../”$_base3$i”.md” > “../”$_base6$i”.pdf” # # pulizia e fine ciclo done rm -rf “$_temp” “../$_base4”

All of this amazing is made possible thanks to the creative and tireless work of the folks at Statera Studio. Still available to try on Steam. Statera Studio has a free trial of their newest creation, Pocket Bravery. This is also a great chance for you to test it out. You should all be able to play for a bit longer since it is a Next Fest Linux Demo. Pocket Bravery is your ticket to a battle with friends or the PC using four unique characters. These battles take place in unique locations around the globe. Ranging from the streets of Porto and Glasgow. Or a Training Room to polish your combat skills. What's so great about Pocket Bravery? It's a tribute to some of the best and most loved fighting games from the 90s. Such as Street Fighter, Fatal Fury, and The King of Fighters. It even draws inspiration from the charming design of Pocket Fighter and others from the 'Neo Geo Pocket Color' series. But don't get it twisted, Pocket Bravery is not just a copy of these classics. It's a brand new retro-inspired fighting game, full of original characters, vivid colors, and a powerful battle system. If you're into competitive fighting, this is your jam, and it's easy to get started.
Ultimate Smackdown: Pocket Bravery Tournament
youtube
Let's talk about the characters you can try out in this trial version: First up, we've got Nuno. This dude has a fiery fighting style that uses Thai Boxing techniques. Like low kicks, elbow attacks, and knee strikes. The story mode shows how Nuno learns about himself and his special powers. Since he can transform his negative feelings into a fierce attack on his rivals. Then there's Mingmei. Interestingly, Mingmei was not a fan of martial arts and preferred to chill on her PC. But things changed, and she's now a Kung-Fu expert. This wasn't just hard work and dedication. She stole an ancient artefact that gave her 'Dragon Energy,' which boosted her training. She now feels the guilt of stealing and wants to use her powers for good in Pocket Bravery. We also have Arshavin, a dude who's all about fame. He wants to the honour of being the greatest fighter, and with his impressive strength, he doesn't know any limits when it comes to a good fight. But being famous can sometimes lead to trouble. Arshavin uses his strength to toss opponents around in his fights. Lastly, there's also a surprise. Pocket Bravery PC players, for the first time, have a chance to discover a legendary mystery character. Who you will know from the classic 'Breakers' series during this Demo on Linux. In short, Pocket Bravery is a a solid retro-inspired fighting game. Letting players step into a world of epic battles, intriguing characters, and vibrant scenarios. Whether you're a competitive fighter or just someone who likes a good battle, this is a chance for you to dive in and fight. So get ready to engage in epic battles, explore new worlds, and find your bravery in your pocket. Also be sure to Wishlist on Steam and GOG. Since its is coming to Linux, Mac, and Windows PC in 2023.
