YOUTUBE BULLSHIT: a channel I'm subbed to made a really awesome video essay on the retro game "Baroque" made for the Sega Saturn in 1998 -- but because he used the word "murder" in it, YouTube decided to age restrict the video which removes it from searches and recommendations. Basically, YouTube killed any reach his video might have had, and as such he's been forced to reupload it with a sprinkling of tiny audio edits.
Dungeon Chill put a lot of time and effort into this really well crafted video and it must be sooo sore to have YouTube unfairly rip that away -- SO, maybe if cryptic surreal games are up your alley, or if you're into obscure/forgotten games in general, OR if a thoughtful retrospective on Baroque (1998) sounds interesting to you... perhaps you could watch the video, throw in a like, or a possible sub 👉👈🥺 etc.
I'm watching it a second time anyway, because it's genuinely just that good!

Realizing that I'm probably gonna need to make a different godot scene for each different card so I can have each have its unique stats and effects. Why did I decided to make a card game again?

Withering Rooms is now one of my favorite games I've ever played. The lore, the NPCs, the vibes are all immaculate. It's incredible that it was largely developed by a single person, Troy West (@witheringrooms). Additionally, the music and foley are top tier. The auditory and visual ambience and the dynamically changing environments and lighting give the game atmosphere second only to the best horror games (Dead Space comes to mind). The mechanics are an amalgam of roguelite, RPG, survival horror, and Metroidvania and are so thoughtfully crafted that they never feel like they get in their own way. The dev credits the community who helped play test and make suggestions during the year and a half in early access on PC for the impeccable polish on the full release. If you like any or all of the genres listed as part of Moonless Formless's spooky masterpiece, I'd recommend giving it a shot. The dev has also put an extensive outline of walkthrough hints and puzzle solutions/strategies on the official game site, so there will be little to no searching the internet for obscure posts about specific puzzles. In conclusion, this is one of the best polished, most user friendly, and most compelling games I've played all year and is in contention for my personal game of 2024. Go play it!!!

Uncover an Epic Sci-Fi Story with Star Deck Roguelite RPG
Tumblr media
Star Deck deckbuilding sci-fi roguelite RPG game aiming to release on Linux and Windows PC, but has a playable Demo. Developer Psyched Studios dedication and creativity are the driving forces behind this project. Working to make its way onto Steam. Let's dive right into Star Deck, the upcoming release from Psyched Studios. Where you take on the role of a space smuggler, navigating a galaxy under The Federation's control. Your mission? To save your kidnapped brother. The game is a mix of adventure and strategy while blending elements from popular titles like Slay the Spire and Smash Up. The unique twist in Star Deck is the rogue-lite approach. You're not just going through a linear storyline. Instead, every run is a new experience with randomized levels and diverse settings. The demo's already out, giving us a taste of what's to come.
I'm intrigued by the ideas of a Linux launch. I'm developing with Unity, but if it's as easy as it is to port to Mac, then sure, why not!?
Developer Alex Elkman, who has no prior experience with Unity 3D and Linux support, but intends to create a native build for his project. Which is impressive, since he's working solo on Star Deck. No word on Steam Deck, yet. In the demo, you've got two main tools at your disposal: the Blaster and the Ice Hammer. Each offers a distinct style. The Blaster is all about managing your ammo for those swift, impactful hits, while the Ice Hammer leans towards defense, freezing your foes in their tracks. And it's not just about these weapons. There's a whole array of non-weapon cards you can collect from events or shops, adding layers to your strategy. Very playable on Linux, via Proton.
Star Deck - Trailer

Combat is where it really shines. You're not just mindlessly attacking; it's about making smart choices. Since you've got vulnerability factors, counterattacks, healing – all the good stuff from RPGs. The world is alive with unique enemies, intense boss battles, and intriguing events. What's really unique is how you'll start each run in the Star Deck full release. You'll choose from 5-6 weapons, each with its deck of over 30 cards. You can also equip two weapons at a time, blending their styles. As you progress, you'll collect more cards, either as battle rewards, event gifts, or shop buys. Due to let you tailor your deck to suit your strategy, experimenting with different combos for the best results. So, what do we have in a nutshell? Star Deck is a sci-fi adventure where you play as Rowan Lightstorm, the smuggler hero. You're trekking across 4-6 unique levels, each with its own challenges and settings. Your toolkit? A pair of weapons, each with a unique approach, backed by a rich selection of cards. The combat is deep and strategic, bringing in classic RPG elements. Plus, the risk / reward of facing off against tough enemies adds to the thrill. And let's not forget: you're earning credits, grabbing consumables like the Health Flask. All while navigating this vibrant, challenging universe. Star Deck is a journey of strategy, risk, and adventure, set against a backdrop of space intrigue and brotherly rescue missions. Keep an eye out for their Kickstarter coming up for the deckbuilding sci-fi RPG game in March 2024. While the full launch is due in Q2 2025 on Steam. Coming to Linux and Windows PC. So make sure to Wishlist it.

Gamers suck at naming genres so badly.
What's that game? *oh its like that game doom I played so I guess I'll call it a doom like*
What about this? *oh that's just like that super old game rogue but a little less so it's a roguelite*
And these!? *that's an rpg because they used to have game mechanics like that for games where you played a role... but now you don't play any role and we just never bothered naming them.*
😠
