Fashion question! If it's cold out and your outfit is going to be covered up by a big puffy coat, is there anything you can do to have fun with how you look?

See, this is exactly why I hate winter. But if you have to add a coat to an otherwise perfect outfit, consider: there are loads of other things you can add!

Some winter accessories that you can mix and match as you like:

Hats, and not just beanies! I love a good winter beret-- it can be cute and très français, or moody and intellectual, or a touch of polish for a rock & roll fit.

Gloves. Knit or cashmere are fine but I'm partial to leather, and bows or shearling trim can take it up a notch with very little effort. Don't be afraid to consider a fun, classic print like houndstooth that goes with everything!

Scarves. Wrap it around your neck and tuck it into your coat, or throw it over your shoulders and pin it with a big ol' fancy brooch or something. This is another great place to add a pop of color-- match it to the coat and hat for a monochrome look, or use it to introduce a fun contrasting hue.

Earmuffs. An underrated winter accessory!

Umbrellas. Yes, the umbrella counts. Make sure it's on point.

Leg warmers?? Controversial, but I have a friend who swears by them, especially with dresses and sheer tights, or even tucked into boots. Not gonna lie... I'm intrigued.

It's also worth considering if a different style coat would make you happy. I understand the practicality of having a big puffy coat for really bad days, but would it also be worthwhile to have on hand a sleek, sophisticated wool peacoat for nice days that just happen to be cold? Or a trench coat, especially in a great color like red or cream, for mild rain? I've found that having a small (3-5) collection of coats goes a long way toward making me feel like I have options that match my outfit.

Imo the ideal coat collection is:

Black

Brown

White or cream (optional, but incredibly sophisticated and you will get so many compliments you will feel like a supermodel)

A color (I love red or pink, but navy, green, or a print would work just as well. My current "color" coat is actually yellow/green/orange/brown plaid and it RULES)

A "weather" coat (for really bad days, depending on where you live)

And these don't all have to be separate coats! A trench works just as well as a regular brown coat as it does in the rain.

Lastly, remember your sunglasses. Besides being chic year-round, they help protect your eyes from wind and from the glare of the snow, and I am constantly forgetting that just because it's chilly doesn't mean the sun doesn't exist anymore. Don't be like me.

WIBTA for trying to help my sister?

Fighting for my life trying to explain this in a way that doesn't get me thrown in the loony bin or a holding cell, but I’m not taking any chances, so here's a throwaway account just in case.

I (17m) have a twin sister, Jane (17?f). When we were kids, we were playing with our friends in the woods during a sleepover one night when Jane was… taken from us. Violently. We took her for dead, which I get shook us all up to some extent, but no one came out of it worse than me, for obvious reasons. As if that wasn’t bad enough, after it happened, all our friends, who might as well have been family to me, turned their backs on me and left me to deal with the fallout on my own. Worse, they went on with their perfect lives, not caring that mine was shattered and we all had a hand in it. To them, it might as well have never happened.

It’s been just under 10 years since then, and some crap’s brought us all back together, something related to what happened then. Almost feels like old times, except for all the arguing. I can’t say it hasn’t been nice to have everyone (7-8 of us, 17-18m/f) together again, but if I used to think that they were all perfectly happy to move on and forget Jane, what we went through, now there is zero doubt that that’s exactly what happened. With most of them, at least. Something’s happened, though, and they’re not going to be able to keep their heads in the sand for long.

I found Jane. We thought—I thought—she was dead, but she never left. She’s been trapped where we left her, and she can’t get out on her own. But I spoke to her. She explained it to me. How to help her. But I can’t do it alone; we need everyone. Everyone needs to come to her, go where it happened, do what we did before—that’s how we can free her.

I’m not gonna lie, someone’s gonna end up hurt, like really hurt. Jane doesn’t know what she’s doing, and she’s been hurting people for a while, but that’s not her fault. If anything, it’s ours for leaving her behind. But none of them needs to get hurt. It can just be me. In fact, I hope it’s me. The others won’t listen to me, though, I know they won’t, because they already haven’t been listening to me. All they care about is sniping at each other, which is why I can’t tell them what I have to do. They can’t know about Jane because I know they won’t have our backs, they never have. It’s not fair that they all get to move on while she can’t, but I can help Jane like we should have done back then. They can abandon me like they did when I was at my lowest, but I won’t let them abandon her again.

If they won’t go willingly, and they won’t, I’ll have to figure out a way to get them where I need them. I’m already working out some ideas. Still, I’ve been stressing out about this. I wish there was another way, one that didn’t involve putting them through this, but they shouldn’t be in any real danger. It’ll just be me, protecting my sister the way I wish I'd done before.

I need to do this. I hope they don’t hate me forever for this, but more than anything, I just hope it works. It has to.

I saw the post about using blokada to block tumblr live on Android, and then you mentioned blocking domains. How do I block domains?

When you install Blokada 5 and launch it, there should be four tabs at the bottom of the screen. The 2nd-left tab has a symbol of three vertical bars, and when you tap on it, says Activity. From here you can view all the domains your phone is trying to connect to. Any domain that you see in green, you can tap on to add it to the Blocked list.

If you launch Tumblr then go back to the Blokada Activity tab, you should see all the domains it's trying to connect to, including ones like "auth.gateway.tumblr-live.com" (yes, your phone connects to this whenever you launch Tumblr, even if you never open the Tumblr Live page). Tap those suckers and block them! (and if they scroll out of view too quickly, use the search 🔍 at the top of the screen to filter for "tumblr" and you should see them all again.)

Zelda looked up from where she was knelt before the construct, providing a bit of repair for its withered parts. The question took her off guard, as the constructs and their intelligence so often did—such complex thoughts for a creature meant as machinery...

and yet, she, the one made of flesh and blood, struggled to find an answer.

"...I'm not sure," she finally admitted with a small smile dampened by tilted brows, "I suppose...it isn't something I have thought about in some time..."

Happiness. When was the last time she felt happy? She must have, surely—with Link, she thought, with Purah, and Impa, and—well, studying the ruins, and—her school, of course, her students—she was happy when she was around them. Right? That warmth, that feeling of belonging, however temporary it was, that was happiness...right?

Was happiness found, or was it learned?

Zelda patted the construct and fixed her smile.

"I'm happy being with you right now," she finally settled, and it felt close enough to the truth, "now then—just a bit more, and you'll be all done. Alright?"

Time to revive this blog, too, as I left Instagram back in January. Here's one of my favourite pieces that I've completed in the time this blog's been inactive! Entity and its little one love you very much. Inspired initially by a clip of a black swan on a koi pond. The swan and the koi were moving together, and my brain went "oh hey wouldn't it be neat if that was some sort of single, gestalt-consciousness entity? Oh shit. I gotta draw that now" and off we went to the recursive celestial entity races. Started it sometime in '22, I think, and finally finished it in 2023. Didn't mention it on Instagram when I posted the finished piece (I kept my fandom stuff on the down-low while I was there), but as the little hatching entity entered the concept and started taking on more form and personality, and the piece's focus began to shift to the Entity's gentle, inquisitive, almost protective observation of the little newcomer's emergence, the piece soon became quiet fanart of Castiel and Jack in my head. In qaftsielworld, Jack gets to eclose from a mountain under the moon, stars, and their mom and guardians' loving gazes like a good little celestial-material entity deserves.

The Querying Thread

Well, I'm on and running into the querying trenches again. This is the seventh book I've queried and the twelfth I've written. (I signed with an agent for the fourth but it didn't stick.)

Round one included five agents, selected either because they are very quick responders (think, under a week) and/or because they only want the query (so I can do a dry run of the pitch all by itself.)

On what page do we learn that sometimes when someone’s mind breaks from guilt they don’t go catatonic, but instead turn erratic and reckless? (I’m hinting at nothing wdym)

That would be Neverseen page 137, where Keefe says, "when our minds break from extreme guilt, they can shatter different ways. Most people shut down and can't function anymore. But some turn erratic and reckless. Sometimes people even get violent."

We see it come up again when Keefe tries to sneak off to Ravagog on his own, where right before Sophie says, "She kept replaying what she'd learned about guilt--how some elves reacted differently. Based on what she knew about Keefe, she was pretty sure his response would be reckless," on page 559 of the same book :)
