The Night Witch Chapter 34 || FFN  • AO3
"Yeah, I guess I understand that," Brielle said, voice turning quiet. "You want to be sure the love is true." Susan stopped. Oh. Oh! She looked Brielle in the eye, finally understood what was making her friend worry so much. "You think Peter's still in love with Diane, don't you?" Brielle looked at Susan from the corner of her eye. "Well, he's always going to love her. You know that. But that doesn't mean that he's not going to be able to have some love for you as well. You can love more than one person; I love you and my brothers and sister equally. I love my mum and dad. I love Narnia…" "How can he love a servant rather than a queen?" Brielle asked bluntly. She folded her arms. "I'm not saying I don't enjoy my life; I do. I don't want to run an entire country—" "—if you marry Peter, you'll be the High Queen—" "—and I'll take that with the name but I'm not going to be the one to make the rules," Brielle interrupted. "No one would follow me. They'll just look at me as a lonely servant, as your lady in waiting, as…his…bloody mistress and nothing else." "You mean those rumors that are going around the castle? Since when have you cared about what anyone else has to say? You disregarded Peter telling you to stay with Lucy back when we went on that blitz on Miraz's castle and went to fight anyway." Brielle looked at Susan like she was stupid. "Well, I needed to make sure you were okay. That's my job." "And you didn't stop to think about your safety at all. You wanted to come in and do what you could for Narnia, and for us, because you love everyone and everything here. You've grown to love it as much as the rest of us have in the time you've been here." She grasped Brielle's hands and firmly held them. "Your station in our life, your 'status' doesn't matter. If Peter wants to be with you and you want to be with him, then it's because it's what you want. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or says. All that matters is what you think of each other." Brielle nodded. Something washed over her face for a moment, something Susan suddenly thought her friend didn't want her to see. Something of a dark look that sent a chill down Susan's spine. Almost like a sinister thought had crossed Brielle's mind in the seconds before the look went away and she appeared more serene. "So?" "So?" Brielle repeated. "Was it a good kiss?" Brielle let out a long sigh and stopped to rest her back against the wall behind her. Susan watched with a small smile as her best friend seemed to swoon directly in front of her. Something that lightly put it off because it was her brother, but at the same time was sweet. Susan hadn't seen Brielle genuinely interested in anyone since Lord Peridan just as Susan hadn't seen anyone genuinely interested in anyone since his late wife. Even if things didn't worked out… At least they would keep each other company with their bickering, Susan thought with a small, amused smile. "How was your kiss with Caspian?" Brielle asked in response. Susan smiled. "It was very lovely." "Yeah," Brielle agreed, voice going soft. "Mine, too."

Sir Peridan ✦ 27 ✦ Human ✦ Narnian ✦ FC: DAN STEVENS
Synopsis:
Peridan’s family comes from the line of Frank and Helen, making them distantly related to Queen Swanwhite. During the winter, Peridans family played the part of complacency, keeping under the radar of the Witch’s ire in order to help those in Narnia as best they could. Peridan grew up helping those who wished to flee, learning early how to be wise around danger, yet giving and compassionate. He was told that he was the descendant of the first King and Queen of Narnia, and as such was taught to behave in a way that was worthy of that name.
When the Winter melted, Peridan and his father fought at the Battle of Beruna, earning the title of ‘Hopebringer’ from Aslan, who knighted him into the Order of the Lion. Because of his upbringing, family, and actions during the winter, Peridan has much influence in Narnia, being granted a place in the Royal Household as Lord Steward. He is a trusted friend of the Pevensies, and in their inner circle.
Peridan is a man of his word, and a man of honor, his years in the winter carved a man of great faith in Aslan as well, and gave him a determination and courage which some find inspiring. But apart from the knight known by the crowd, Peridan is a man who loves deeply, a gentle soul, who enjoys life to the fullest, though within moderation. Too much of a good thing can be harmful, after all.
Relationships:
King Peter: The closest relationship Peridan has is with the King himself, a brotherly regard having been built over the years between them. Two men who have matured within the same timeframe, and have grown together, making for themselves a very comfortable and relaxed friendship. Some may say that Peridan is too casual with the king, and some wonder if he feels slighted by the Lion for passing over him as monarch of Narnia. But for Peridan, he couldn’t be more pleased. He’ll gladly tease Peter that things may have been very different, but he will always be delighted that it’s Peter and not he. His friend is much more suited to the crown.
Tumnus: Tumnus was always a good friend of Peridans father, and now the work closely as the Chamberlain and Steward of the palace. Business brought them together more than anything, though soon a lovely companionship was struck and they realized they work very well together.
Petra Thorne: There are times when a man needs solace and solitude, and in the library Peridan found both, along with a little friend a few years ago. She’s a bit younger than himself, but she delights him with her more childish and innocent insight. They have something in common as well, the fact that Petras family also helped friends escape to Archenland, it is something that they have bonded over.

monarchs of myth - peridan
Once a Lord and Knight of the Most Noble Order of the Lion. Peridan is one of several candidates who may have taken the throne after the Pevensie’s left Narnia in 1015 NY. It is believe that after the Pevensie’s departure he refused to believe that they were truly gone, and insisted upon searching for them for years. Eventually, he had to accept they would likely not return in his lifetime, and took upon himself to attempt to continue the Golden Age. His fierce fearlessness in spite of chaos led him to be called The Determined.

“I call all times soon”
Living so near to the Eastern Sea made Aslan’s prolonged absence all the more maddening. Lucy could look out from any of a hundred picture windows and imagine she saw his golden figure coming towards her across the rolling waves.
The ambassador from Galma called her Valiant, and Lucy stiffened. The name sounded strange when it did not come from Narnian lips.
Even unarmed, she was not without weapons: a strong voice, a ready wit, fingertips sharpened on bowstrings. She would never be defenseless again. Still, she trembled.
How bloody must we pray our lips? Lucy stumbled across the line in a book of poetry and let it simmer in her heart. Come to me, she said, over and over. Her lips were numb from repetition some nights, but not yet bloody.
Your courage makes my own fear less frightening, Peter told her. The air in the tent was oppressive; in the distance, the night-sounds of the enemy camp could just be heard. Lucy looked up at her big brother, feeling slight and insubstantial. Oh Peter, she said, you have given me a heavy compliment. I am not strong enough to bear the weight of it.
The light on the water was lovely, but it was not Aslan.
Winter sank its teeth into the land and Lucy bundled herself in furs. She marched north with a column of soldiers wrapped in bearskin. In white ermine, she went to Archenland for the signing of a new treaty. She brushed her fingers over the softness of the fur until hairs came off in her hands. When she drew herself up, she imagined that she was the fiercest of beasts, armed with tooth and claw.
Lucy wept into her sister’s hair the morning after Christmas. An absurd sorrow, she knew; it was not as though the great Lion was in the habit of visiting on Christmas. Still, she had thought to see him. If he had ended one long absence with an arrival at Christmas, perhaps he might do it again. I’m sorry, Lucy breathed between sobs, I’m getting snot in it. Susan shook her head. I miss him too.
Peridan left court at midnight wearing naught put a cloak over his nightshirt when word came that his wife had gone into labor prematurely. When Lucy heard the following morning, she cursed the young lord for not awakening her and made to follow him with her cordial. Mother and babe were both hale and whole in the wee hours of the next day. The Valiant Queen wiped blood onto her skirt. The sun rose golden.
Lucy remembered how to be brave, even with Aslan gone. She remembered how to still the shaking in her hands and her heart and do what needed to be done. She did not remember how to be invincible.
When she returned to court the next day, Lucy learned that Aslan had been seen at Lantern Waste in her absence, and had spoken with Edmund.
She shot her practice target to an awful, twisted pulp, feeling depraved. He had come, but not to her.
Lucy visited Tumnus and drank over-steeped tea before a roaring fire. She brought bread from the Cair’s kitchens. Rosemary, poppy seed, cumin, and honey. It all smelled, unfathomably, of home.
She had not been to see the Beavers lately, because speaking with Mr. Beaver now put her in mind of those long-ago words: Not often here, you understand. Not in my time, nor in my father’s time. Nothing frightened Lucy so much as the flickering idea that she might never hear Aslan’s voice again, as all the long years of her life stretched out before her.
Edmund always kept Aslan’s visits tallied in a little leather journal. When and where he arrived. What he said. What he did. Stubbornly, Lucy gave him a new journal for his birthday. For when the current one is full, she said.
At last, at last, Lucy saw Aslan again. She ran to him, full tilt, as she had done many times before.
When Lucy reached him, she did not embrace him. Instead, she beat her fists against him with all her strength. Her knuckles came away bruised; still, she did not relent. She punched and hit and kicked the great Lion until she could no longer stand, and then fell against him, exhausted, weeping.
Through all Lucy’s onslaught, Aslan never moved. He flinched neither in pain nor self-defense; he never hindered or chastised her. He simply stood, absolute and immovable, and let her strike him.
I needed you, sobbed Lucy. You were gone for so long. Oh Aslan, how could you?
And now Aslan bowed his great, golden head and breathed on her. Darling daughter, I have never once abandoned you, he said.

𝐇𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐇𝐄 𝐊𝐍𝐄𝐖 𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑𝐘𝐎𝐍𝐄 𝐀𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐘.   embraced in the swell of dancing and drinking in the heart of blaenau’s dancefloor, it is difficult to avoid the lavish giggling of his younger sisters draped across men they hardly know.   he sips the glass of whiskey in his fingers as he moves through the rambunctious swaying crowd beneath the band’s music.   somewhere a glass shatters and a cheer rings after it.   peridan simply smiles, shaking his head as he approaches the shadow in the corner of the commotion.
squinting, he can barely recognise the woman before him   (  perhaps this was the secretary lieutenant edwards had been gushing over the day before?   or maybe lord cavendish’s second-cousin-twice-removed?   no...   this lady seems far too uncomfortable to be either  ).   but she could be anyone;   he can only recognise ABOUT A THIRD of the guests here tonight.   consciously making an effort to smile, he asks,     ‘  can i get you a drink, miss?  ’

The Night Witch Chapter 20 || FFN ● AO3
"Honestly, I think the nursemaids are excited he's around."
"I think you're right."
"You've been spending a lot of time up there lately," Susan said carefully, watching Brielle's face for any reaction. She did her best to keep her face neutral. "I can't imagine the servants you used to work with are what's keeping you around."
"They have some pretty good gossip," Brielle replied with a grin. She shrugged. "I've been spending some time with the nursemaids. They've been asking me about the sorts of things I'd seen while in battle, the wounds we had to treat…" She turned away, eyes flashing. "I can't say it hasn't been interesting watching them fawn all over Peter…he doesn't know what to do with the attention. Not that he ever did."
"So you're protecting him then?" Susan teased. She laughed to herself, seeing Brielle's grimace. "You're acting like you've never fancied him."
"I was young and stupid," Brielle shot back with a light roll of her eyes. She crossed the room and started to "You'd fancy anyone you spent a lot of time with, because you spend a lot of time with them." She rolled her eyes. "And the time I spent with Pete wasn't times I spent willingly." Susan gave her another look. "What do you want me to say, Su? That I still fancy him? I don't. I was a kid then. He'd moved on years ago."
Susan wasn't quite sure that was true. But it was also something she didn't speak to her siblings about much. Her brothers and sister had teased her about the men that had fancied her, about the ones that had tried to court her, even the ones that had tried to kidnap her to force her into a marriage—she would never forget Prince Rabadash or Tisroc, but it wasn't a conversation they had seriously until it was something that would affect the Narnian rule.
Something rippled across Narnia when Peter met Diane…
"Bri," Susan said slowly, carefully. "When was the last time you thought about Lord Peridan?"

𝐚 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭.    that is all this much-spoken-of fiancee is, tatiana decides after her sixth glass of champagne.    for all she has heard in whispers and echoes across the society circuit that lord dartmoor was seeking a wife, she’d expected someone...   more impressive.    perhaps she gave peridan’s taste too much credit.    this fiancee is dull-eyed and plain-faced, her hair done in the most gaudy manner...    she does nothing to disguise that she is english, does she?
neither does he, for that matter.    the perfect english gentleman    ---   meeting her eyes across the room and betraying nothing, offering only a polite bow of his head.    well, tatiana is not english, and she is not french   ;;   she is russian.    or has he forgotten?   well, she will not let him forget.
‘ lord peridan.   you do grace us with your presence. ’     these heels are too damned high.   she manages not to sway on them, graceful no matter the occasion, but the heady flush to her face and the slur in her words gives her away.       ‘ and you have brought a companion!   when you have always made such a point of attending these society affairs  a l o n e  in the past.     how... ’     she regards the lady on his arm with an arch, too-friendly smile.       ‘ quaint. ’

❝  i didn’t mean to insinuate that you didn’t have one, my lord. ❞          there was LAUGHTER in her voice and in her eyes. the days where she had been uncomfortable, even fearful, in peridan’s presence were quickly fading, replaced by a feeling of comfort and fondness. enough so that she didn’t worry when his failure to grasp one of the northernmen’s jokes caused her to giggle. nor did she look for any hidden malice behind his words. instead, she smiled easily at him.            ❝  only that northern humor is clearly quite DIFFERENT from what you are accustomed to in the south. ❞
