"Homeland"
-De Guzman, Louisa
On a cold winter morning in January in Paris, the touch and breath of air urge Cornelia Lewitze to wear her favorite cardigan to go straight up to a coffee shop in the street of Avenue Montaigne together with her sketchbook. As she took a sip of her drink, a man suddenly hit her left hand leaving a stain on her drawing. The man soon apologized and was shocked by the mess he made unto the beautifully drawn city. He decided to buy her a plate of croissant as compensation but Cornelia refused to accept this, which left the man with no choice but to give his business card.
While walking through the exit, Cairne Moritz, the man, felt guilty about the accident and glanced at Cornelia; that somehow grave a smirk on his lips, he was amazed by her beauty. Contrastingly, Cornelia is occupied organizing her papers when a sudden realization pops into her mind. The stain in her drawing marked a unique sequence of drops making it look more artistic and vintage than before; this made her happy.
After months of staying in Paris, Cornelia planned to move to New York to continue her studies. After weeks of arranging her belongings and finding an apartment, she decided to take a break and roam around the streets of Cornelia to buy some vinyl records. It's been an hour until she finally finds her favorite artist's album records when someone on the other side suddenly grabs the last piece that she was about to pull out of the sector. The woman then tries to give it to her but she declines as this may seem unfair, which makes Sidney, the woman, make a deal where she can lend it to her for some time. She then agreed and gave each other contact numbers. She felt happy and weird simultaneously as she knew to herself that she was immensely unsociable.
It's a dark night when Sidney recalls that their university needs scholars, she then calls some of her friends until she reaches Cornelia's number. Cornelia on the other side answered it and accepted her offer as Sidney keeps on persisting which is an advantage for her as she was also finding a suitable university.
At the university, after answering the interview questions, the interviewee recognized her immaculate skills and intelligence; he congratulated her for passing the requirements. The name of the university seems familiar to her as if she saw this name before on a card.
Cairne's family was the owner of the school which he sometimes visited as he is about to manage this in a year. While entering the office he saw that someone was being interviewed. He realizes that this someone was quite familiar. Right there, he sees Cornelia who again made him smirk. Cornelia was so bewildered and flustered by his sudden presence that flares a thousand questions into her mind.
When Cornelia comes out of the office, Cairne follows her, and both ask the question "What are you doing here?" When Cairne was about to speak Cornelia cuts him off by saying that "Ahhh you own this right?" Cairne nodded as a reply. Cornelia then said, "Ok here's one thing, don't you ever talk or come right in front of me and forget what happened before, here's your card, I hope you understand but I just don't want others to think that I'm taking advantage of you merely to get into this school, thank you." "Oooh such a feisty, okay I get it but it's up to me to decide who I want to talk with, I hope you understand as well," Cairne responded and took the chance to ask if he can accompany her out. He didn't wait for her response because he knows that she will refuse just like before. With that, he swiftly grabs Cornelia's hands and runs into his car. The whole ride was silent until Cairne broke it and uttered, "Do you have someone in your mind right now?", "Why?" Cornelia asked "Ok then, that's good" Cairne grinned facing Cornelia. When Cornelia gets out of the car, Cairne asks her name and because of the loud honks of cars, Cornelia screams her name "Cornelia, m-m-my name is Cornelia". Cairne then left with a smile sculptured on his face that left Cornelia confused."
It's been a week and every day, Cairne visits the university to see Cornelia. When Cornelia was about to leave, Cairne appeared and called her. He then took his chance to ask her out for lunch at the nearest restaurant. They started conversing and recalled their first impression that made them both laugh. On their way to Cornelia's street, Cairne notices that the street has the same name as hers and said "Cute, you've found the safe place hahaha" Cornelia chuckled and smiled at Cairne. On her way to her house, she realizes that she never opens up to others but Cairne was an exception. This led her to think that maybe she could at least try to be friends with others and forget about her past and the trauma that her family caused that broke her trust and made her into stone.
It's been a couple of months and the two get closer together with Sidney who is Cairne's cousin. Both have been sharing everything about their lives, their likes and dislikes as if they've opened each other's locks. Cairne becomes Cornelia's town and homeland whereas Cornelia becomes Cairne's crown. They've come to erase each other's nightmares and rewrite their stories by filling them with love and comfort where they started to see daylight.
After some time, Cairne has planned to confess his feelings for Cornelia, he didn't want to take this as an opportunity to fulfill his parent's wish which is for him to get married and continue to run their business but because he truly is sincere and certain about his feelings that he has fallen in love.
In the wilderness, he finally managed to confess to her, Cornelia couldn't express a single word as she was mystified by his sudden confession and had mixed feelings. She then started crying and let her words out saying, "I'm sorry but I don't know what to say Cairne, I love you, I truly do, but I don't think that I deserve you, you’re such a precious man with a heart of glass and I don't think that I'll be able to handle you, I had a lot of reasons and I know you had your reasons as well but I can't, I don't understand myself. I had a lot of things in my head that couldn't just disappear. I'm sorry." Cairne begged, "No, you can't please, Cornelia, I'll help you, remember we are each other's comfort?" "Cairne, I'm so sorry but this will be better for us," Cornelia replied while being crestfallen and left Cairne alone.
It's been a year since that confession, while walking down her way to the forest that Cairne and her used to visit, she sees someone right there, a man confessing to his significant one. When she realizes that the man was no other than Cairne Moritz, a thousand flashbacks ran into her mind making her cry in silence while engraving a smile on her lips and saying "I know that you will always find her, I'm not your crown anymore"
With that, one thing she concludes is that everything happens for a reason. The thing between her and Cairne was a beautiful accident that made her realize her worth and chose herself because Herself is her own homeland.

RIP Louisa Moritz ~ Who played Terry in the Lucille Ball special “Happy Anniversary & Goodbye” (1974), although the two share no scenes together.  Moritz left Cuba and moved to New York City during the upheaval of the 1950s. Louisa was inspired to change her last name from Castro to Moritz to distance herself from the communist leader and chose her new moniker after seeing the St. Moritz Hotel. She may be the inspiration for the character of Lily St. Regis in the musical Annie. Although often cast as the dumb blonde, she later worked as an attorney in Southern California.  She was 72 years old.
