Is AWAY using it's own program or is this just a voluntary list of guidelines for people using programs like DALL-E? How does AWAY address the environmental concerns of how the companies making those AI programs conduct themselves (energy consumption, exploiting impoverished areas for cheap electricity, destruction of the environment to rapidly build and get the components for data centers etc.)? Are members of AWAY encouraged to contact their gov representatives about IP theft by AI apps?
What is AWAY and how does it work?
AWAY does not "use its own program" in the software sense—rather, we're a diverse collective of ~1000 members that each have their own varying workflows and approaches to art. While some members do use AI as one tool among many, most of the people in the server are actually traditional artists who don't use AI at all, yet are still interested in ethical approaches to new technologies.
Our code of ethics is a set of voluntary guidelines that members agree to follow upon joining. These emphasize ethical AI approaches, (preferably open-source models that can run locally), respecting artists who oppose AI by not training styles on their art, and refusing to use AI to undercut other artists or work for corporations that similarly exploit creative labor.
Environmental Impact in Context
It's important to place environmental concerns about AI in the context of our broader extractive, industrialized society, where there are virtually no "clean" solutions:
The water usage figures for AI data centers (200-740 million liters annually) represent roughly 0.00013% of total U.S. water usage. This is a small fraction compared to industrial agriculture or manufacturing—for example, golf course irrigation alone in the U.S. consumes approximately 2.08 billion gallons of water per day, or about 7.87 trillion liters annually. This makes AI's water usage about 0.01% of just golf course irrigation.
Looking into individual usage, the average American consumes about 26.8 kg of beef annually, which takes around 1,608 megajoules (MJ) of energy to produce. Making 10 ChatGPT queries daily for an entire year (3,650 queries) consumes just 38.1 MJ—about 42 times less energy than eating beef. In fact, a single quarter-pound beef patty takes 651 times more energy to produce than a single AI query.
Overall, power usage specific to AI represents just 4% of total data center power consumption, which itself is a small fraction of global energy usage. Current annual energy usage for data centers is roughly 9-15 TWh globally—comparable to producing a relatively small number of vehicles.
The consumer environmentalism narrative around technology often ignores how imperial exploitation pushes environmental costs onto the Global South. The rare earth minerals needed for computing hardware, the cheap labor for manufacturing, and the toxic waste from electronics disposal disproportionately burden developing nations, while the benefits flow largely to wealthy countries.
While this pattern isn't unique to AI, it is fundamental to our global economic structure. The focus on individual consumer choices (like whether or not one should use AI, for art or otherwise,) distracts from the much larger systemic issues of imperialism, extractive capitalism, and global inequality that drive environmental degradation at a massive scale.
They are not going to stop building the data centers, and they weren't going to even if AI never got invented.
Creative Tools and Environmental Impact
In actuality, all creative practices have some sort of environmental impact in an industrialized society:
Digital art software (such as Photoshop, Blender, etc) generally uses 60-300 watts per hour depending on your computer's specifications. This is typically more energy than dozens, if not hundreds, of AI image generations (maybe even thousands if you are using a particularly low-quality one).
Traditional art supplies rely on similar if not worse scales of resource extraction, chemical processing, and global supply chains, all of which come with their own environmental impact.
Paint production requires roughly thirteen gallons of water to manufacture one gallon of paint.
Many oil paints contain toxic heavy metals and solvents, which have the potential to contaminate ground water.
Synthetic brushes are made from petroleum-based plastics that take centuries to decompose.
That being said, the point of this section isn't to deflect criticism of AI by criticizing other art forms. Rather, it's important to recognize that we live in a society where virtually all artistic avenues have environmental costs. Focusing exclusively on the newest technologies while ignoring the environmental costs of pre-existing tools and practices doesn't help to solve any of the issues with our current or future waste.
The largest environmental problems come not from individual creative choices, but rather from industrial-scale systems, such as:
Industrial manufacturing (responsible for roughly 22% of global emissions)
Industrial agriculture (responsible for roughly 24% of global emissions)
Transportation and logistics networks (responsible for roughly 14% of global emissions)
Making changes on an individual scale, while meaningful on a personal level, can't address systemic issues without broader policy changes and overall restructuring of global economic systems.
Intellectual Property Considerations
AWAY doesn't encourage members to contact government representatives about "IP theft" for multiple reasons:
We acknowledge that copyright law overwhelmingly serves corporate interests rather than individual creators
Creating new "learning rights" or "style rights" would further empower large corporations while harming individual artists and fan creators
Many AWAY members live outside the United States, many of which having been directly damaged by the US, and thus understand that intellectual property regimes are often tools of imperial control that benefit wealthy nations
Instead, we emphasize respect for artists who are protective of their work and style. Our guidelines explicitly prohibit imitating the style of artists who have voiced their distaste for AI, working on an opt-in model that encourages traditional artists to give and subsequently revoke permissions if they see fit. This approach is about respect, not legal enforcement. We are not a pro-copyright group.
In Conclusion
AWAY aims to cultivate thoughtful, ethical engagement with new technologies, while also holding respect for creative communities outside of itself. As a collective, we recognize that real environmental solutions require addressing concepts such as imperial exploitation, extractive capitalism, and corporate power—not just focusing on individual consumer choices, which do little to change the current state of the world we live in.
When discussing environmental impacts, it's important to keep perspective on a relative scale, and to avoid ignoring major issues in favor of smaller ones. We promote balanced discussions based in concrete fact, with the belief that they can lead to meaningful solutions, rather than misplaced outrage that ultimately serves to maintain the status quo.
If this resonates with you, please feel free to join our discord. :)

Europe changed the rules of the internet this week when the Digital Markets Act took effect, holding the biggest tech companies to tough new standards. Now the world is waiting to see which giant will be first to fall foul of the law. One of the architects of the DMA says Apple is a strong candidate for the first formal investigation, describing the company as “low hanging fruit.”
Apple has faced intensifying pressure in recent years from competitors, regulators, and courts in both Europe and the US, over the restrictions it places on app-makers who must rely on its App Store to reach millions of users. Yesterday Apple terminated the developer account of Fornite publisher Epic Games which has challenged the company in US courts and recently announced its intention to launch a rival to the Apple App Store.
German MEP Andreas Schwab, who led the negotiations that finalized the DMA on behalf of the EU Parliament, says that makes Apple a likely first target for non-compliance. “[This] gives me a very clear expectation that they want to be the first,” he tells WIRED. “Apple’s approach is a bit weird on all this and therefore it's low hanging fruit.”
Schwab is not involved in enforcement of the DMA. That’s overseen by the European Commission, which has already demanded “further explanation” as to why Apple terminated Epic’s account and is evaluating whether this violates the DMA.
“Apple’s approach to the Digital Markets Act was guided by two simple goals: complying with the law and reducing the inevitable, increased risks the DMA creates for our EU users,” says the company in a statement sent to WIRED by Apple spokesperson Rob Saunders. Apple has said on its website that alternative app stores carry the risk of malware, illicit code and other harmful content.
The DMA’s rules that aim to “break open” tech platforms require Apple to allow iPhone users to download apps from places other than Apples’ official App Store. The Epic Games Store, announced in January, intended to be launched by the Fortnite-maker Epic, would have been the first alternative app store to take advantage of the new system.
Apple tells WIRED it had the right to terminate Epic’s accounts according to a 2021 California court ruling. Epic CEO Tim Sweeney has been a vocal critic of what he styles as Apple’s “app store monopoly” for years, although in January the US supreme court denied a request to hear the latest episode in a lengthy antitrust dispute between the two companies in a victory for the smartphone maker.
The DMA went into force at midnight on March 7 in Brussels—3 pm in Silicon Valley. From that moment, six of the world’s biggest tech companies—Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, and TikTok’s Beijing-based owner ByteDance—must comply with a suite of new rules designed to improve competition in digital markets.
In addition to Apple having to allow outside apps, Microsoft Windows will no longer have Microsoft-owned Bing as its default search tool; users of Meta’sWhatsApp will be able to communicate with people on rival messaging apps; and Google and Amazon will have to tweak their search results to create more room for rivals. Companies that don’t comply with the new rules can be fined up to 20 percent of their global turnover.
The new rules should cause the European internet to “change for the better,” says Schwab, a center-right MEP. “To allow more openness, more fairness, and most of all more innovation and therefore new services—that’s the idea.”
Schwab’s comments add to a recent chorus of criticism targeting Apple. The EU’s antitrust chief, Margarethe Vestager, told Bloomberg earlier this week that the DMA will initially focus on sorting out big tech’s app stores. “I think it’s important you can have more than one app store on your phone,” she said on Tuesday.
Following Apple’s removal of Epic, the tone in the hallways of the Commission had become more urgent. “Under the #DMA, there is no room for threats by gatekeepers to silence developers," said Thierry Breton, the EU's industry chief, on X on Thursday, apparently referring to allegations by Epic's Sweeney that Apple had blocked the company's account because of the CEO’s critical Tweets. “I have asked our services to look into Apple’s termination of Epic’s developer account as a matter of priority.”
Flexing the DMA’s powers on Apple’s App Store would advertise how the law can improve life online for the general public, Schwab says. “I think the App Store would be a good example to show what we want to achieve with the DMA,” he says. “They will just see more apps and they will like these apps.”
Giving people choice over where they get mobile apps by requiring Apple and Google to permit alternative app stores on devices is seen as a key pillar of the DMA. In addition to giving users more choice, app developers will also gain more opportunities to to innovate, increasing competition, says Schwab. “With alternative app stores we can make markets a bit broader.”

Introducing Discuit: An Easy-to-Use, Open-Source Social Media Platform
Welcome to Discuit!
We are an open-source alternative to Reddit, although we have steadily been gaining a bigger audience from all over the internet.
On the 16th of June, 2023, Discuit was launched as a reaction to the Reddit drama regarding the forced shutdown of practically all of its 3rd-party apps and tools. It was a pretty barebones platform at first, with only one main community, and only text posts.
Now, about 8 months later, Discuit has over 5000 users, and is still slowly but surely growing. We've gotten many more features, such as different post types, the ability to request your own community, and several 3rd-party tools are being developed!
Right now, you might thinking "Hey, this platform seems nice, but what makes it different?" It is, after all, made as an alternative to Reddit- it's not really its own platform, some could say.
And, well, there are a few things!
First of all, one of Discuit's main goals is to prevent the enshittification that caused Reddit's decay. This means that our monetisation strategy will not revolve around ads, ever. All we have in terms of monetisation at the moment is a Patreon, the proceeds of which far exceed our current hosting costs. In the future, we might add things like Discuit Premium (similar to things like Discord Nitro), which adds some cosmetic options. We may also add a feature similar to Reddit's Awards, but at the moment, neither of these are necessary.
Another of Discuit's core goals is quite similar to what makes Tumblr so beloved among its users; a lack of algorithm. There are no addicting strategies to keep users here: no requiring registration simply to view content, no popups asking you to sign up every single time you navigate to a new page, a mobile browser experience that doesn't suck in order to drive people to the app, the ability to turn off infinite scroll- it's all here, and more will come in the future.
Discuit is not designed to be as attention-grabbing possible, unlike most platforms nowadays. It's simply a community, and that's what makes it so awesome.
The third of our core principles is the ability to customise as much as possible about your experience. Right now, these options are relatively simple, and mostly include the ability to disable infinite scroll, but they will be expanded upon in the future. Users will eventually be able to filter out all low-effort/meme content, for example, and only see the really good stuff. Or the inverse, if you're just looking for the memes.
Communities will also have more customisation options. These will include things like a "point" (somewhat like Reddit Karma) requirement before being able to join or post in a community, options for more experienced users to be able to help the moderation team using a flagging system, and much more.
If all of this sounds like your cup of tea, then come on over to discuit.net! We have a wonderful community there, and we'd love to see you there!
If you're still curious about the site, we have a few places where you can find more information:
Discuit's Substack (Note that the few posts we have here are relatively old, and may be outdated.)
Discuit's GitHub repository (Not necessarily for finding information, but you can look/add to the code behind the platform here!)
Discuit's most official community, Discuit! This is where all major announcements regarding the platform are posted, and where you can find the latest version of the roadmap.
Thanks a ton for reading! We hope you have a good time with us.
With love,
The Discuit Admin Team

How Mobile App Development Services Drive User Engagement and Retention
Tumblr media
1. Introduction
In today’s competitive digital landscape, mobile apps are no longer a luxury—they’re a necessity. As of 2025, global smartphone users surpass 7 billion, and over 90% of mobile time is spent on apps. But launching an app isn't enough. Without sustained user engagement and high retention, even the most innovative apps can fade into obscurity.
This is where Mobile App Development Services play a pivotal role. From intuitive UI/UX design to personalized user journeys and real-time analytics, professional app development goes beyond coding—it’s about creating lasting connections between brands and users.
2. Understanding User Engagement and Retention
Before diving into strategies, it’s vital to define the two pillars of mobile app success:
User Engagement refers to how actively users interact with the app—measured by metrics like session length, frequency of use, and feature interaction.
User Retention is the ability of the app to keep users returning over time, typically measured at intervals like Day 1, Day 7, and Day 30 retention rates.
Churn rate (users who stop using the app) is the inverse of retention, and minimizing it is key for long-term app performance.
3. Core Features of Mobile App Development Services That Boost Engagement
Professional Mobile App Development Services are designed with engagement in mind, integrating technical and experiential features:
✅ Personalization
AI and machine learning personalize content based on user behavior. Netflix-style recommendations or eCommerce product suggestions improve relevance and keep users interested.
✅ Push Notifications
Modern services implement smart push notifications—those that adapt based on user behavior, location, and preferences. Well-timed, relevant alerts significantly increase re-engagement.
✅ Onboarding Experiences
First impressions matter. Development teams ensure onboarding is smooth, fast, and informative. Interactive tutorials and minimal friction steps reduce drop-offs.
✅ UI/UX Design
An intuitive design is a cornerstone of engagement. Clean navigation, accessible layout, and gesture-friendly interactions make users stick around longer.
4. Retention Strategies Enabled by Mobile App Development Services
Mobile App Development Services also help in building retention mechanisms directly into the app’s architecture.
🔁 In-App Messaging and Loyalty Programs
Real-time chat, customer support, and loyalty rewards foster a sense of community. Points, vouchers, or tiered rewards encourage repeat usage.
🎮 Gamification
Turning everyday interactions into achievements (e.g., streaks, badges) keeps users coming back. Apps like Duolingo have mastered this.
📶 Offline Functionality
Especially in areas with low connectivity, offline features ensure usability anytime. This not only boosts retention but expands your user base.
🔄 Cross-Platform Sync
Apps that sync across multiple devices (e.g., mobile, tablet, wearables) make usage seamless, allowing users to pick up where they left off.
5. Technical Innovations That Enhance Engagement
Behind the scenes, several advanced technologies power engagement strategies:
📊 Analytics Integration
Modern development services integrate tools like Firebase, Mixpanel, or Amplitude to monitor user behavior. Real-time data drives UX improvements and targeted updates.
🤖 Machine Learning for Prediction
ML models can identify churn-prone users and trigger automated retention campaigns (e.g., special offers or personalized nudges).
🔗 IoT and Wearable Integration
Especially relevant in health, fitness, and smart home apps, integrations with devices like smartwatches and trackers increase interaction points.
☁️ Cloud Infrastructure
Faster performance and global content delivery are enabled through cloud solutions like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud. Speed is critical to retention—every second delay increases bounce risk.
6. Case Studies / Industry Examples
🏋️ Fitness App Example
A fitness app integrated personalized workout routines using user data and wearables. Engagement rates rose by 40%, while 30-day retention improved by 25% after gamification was introduced.
🛍️ E-Commerce App Example
Using dynamic push notifications for abandoned carts and flash sales, an e-commerce app boosted return visits by 50%. Tailored Mobile App Development Services enabled A/B testing for continuous improvement.
7. Choosing the Right Mobile App Development Partner
Not all app developers are equal. When selecting a Mobile App Development Services provider, prioritize:
Proven experience across platforms (iOS, Android, cross-platform)
Expertise in UI/UX, backend architecture, and data security
Support for integration of advanced features like AI, cloud, and analytics
Post-launch support for updates, user feedback loops, and scaling
Ongoing maintenance and evolution of the app are just as crucial as the initial build.
8. Conclusion
In 2025’s saturated app market, user attention is hard-won and easily lost. Engagement and retention are no longer optional—they’re essential KPIs that define success. With the right Mobile App Development Services, businesses can design feature-rich, technically sound, and highly engaging mobile apps that users not only download—but keep using.

How Mobile App Development Companies in India Prioritise UX/UI for Higher User Retention
Creating a functional mobile app is no longer sufficient. With millions of applications competing for user attention, businesses must ensure that their apps not only function seamlessly but also deliver a delightful user experience. At this point, UX/UI (User Experience and User Interface) plays a critical role.
Tumblr media
Particularly, Mobile App Development Company in India have emerged as leaders in prioritising UX/UI design to enhance user retention and ensure long-term app success.
Why UX/UI Matters in Mobile App Development
The way a user interacts with a mobile application is largely determined by the design of the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX). The total experience a user has while using an application, including its usability, effectiveness, and satisfaction, is the emphasis of user experience (UX). The app's visual layout, which includes buttons, icons, spacing, typography, and colours, is referred to as user interface (UI).
A well-designed UX/UI not only helps users achieve their goals effortlessly but also encourages them to keep using the app. Studies show that users are more likely to abandon an app that is poorly designed or confusing, regardless of its functionality. This is why Mobile App Development Companies in India are investing heavily in UX/UI design.
Understanding Human-Centered Design Principles
Mobile App Development Companies in India are increasingly adopting human-centered design (HCD) principles, which place the user at the core of the development process. HCD ensures that customer demands are taken into consideration and that the design is accessible and easy to use. Here's how they implement it:
1. User Research and Persona Creation
Indian developers begin with comprehensive user research to understand the target audience's behaviors, preferences, and pain points. Creating detailed user personas helps them visualise the end user and design accordingly.
2. Empathy Mapping
By using empathy maps, designers can understand what users think, feel, say, and do. This technique helps create emotionally engaging experiences that resonate with users.
3. Prototyping and Wireframing
Before coding begins, low- and high-fidelity prototypes are created to visualise the user journey. Tools like Figma, Adobe XD, and Sketch are widely used by Indian developers to simulate real user interaction.
4. Iterative Testing and Feedback
Continuous user feedback loops are a feature of agile approaches used by Indian app development companies. By testing the design with real users at different stages, they ensure usability and functionality are optimised before launch.
Usability Techniques for Better Retention
Retention is the ultimate test of a mobile app's success. Mobile App Development Companies in India employ several usability techniques to keep users engaged:
1. Onboarding Experiences
First impressions matter. Indian developers focus on creating intuitive onboarding processes that introduce users to the app's features without overwhelming them. Tooltips, walkthroughs, and demo videos are commonly used.
2. Microinteractions
The software feels alive and active thanks to subtle animations, visual clues, and feedback systems. Microinteractions enhance the user experience by acknowledging actions, reducing errors, and making navigation seamless.
3. Consistency in Design
Consistency in colors, fonts, button styles, and iconography improves usability. Indian UX/UI designers follow platform guidelines like Google's Material Design and Apple's Human Interface Guidelines to maintain a coherent experience.
4. Accessibility Features
Indian developers prioritise inclusivity by integrating accessibility features like voice navigation, screen readers, and adaptable text sizes. This expands the app’s reach and ensures no user is left behind.
5. Performance Optimisation
An app may look great, but if it’s slow or buggy, users won’t stay. Indian developers optimise loading times, reduce crashes, and ensure the app performs well under different network conditions.

Creating a functional mobile app is no longer sufficient. With millions of applications competing for user attention, businesses must ensure that their apps not only function seamlessly but also deliver a delightful user experience. At this point, UX/UI (User Experience and User Interface) plays a critical role.
