This black and white photograph shows a family consisting of a mother, father, two boys, and a girl.  The parents sit in unmatched wooden chairs.  To the left of the fireplace, the mother sits playing a guitar.  The father sits to the right holding a fireplace poker.  One boy sits on the floor holding a small black dog.  The girl sits next to him on the wide planked wooden floor.  A pile of kindling is between them.  The other boy stands behind his father’s chair.  The stone fireplace has a roaring fire in it.  The mantel is covered with photographs and prints.  Fabric or paper covers the walls.  On the far left a bureau of drawers with a mirror is visible.  On the far right, there is a neatly made bed.

Captain Rosemary Bryant Mariner (née Bryant; formerly Conatser); was born on April 2, 1953. She was an American pilot and one of the first six women to earn their wings as a United States Naval Aviator in 1974. She was the first female military pilot to fly a tactical jet and the first to achieve command of an operational aviation squadron.

Rosemary Bryant Mariner (then Rosemary B. Conatser) joined the United States Navy in 1973 after being selected as one of the first eight women to enter U.S. Navy pilot training. She completed Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, then headed to Pensacola, Florida for basic flight training. She was designated a Naval Aviator in June 1974 and became one of the first six women to earn their wings as a United States Naval Aviator, alongside Barbara Allen Rainey, Jane Skiles O'Dea, Judith Ann Neuffer, Ana Marie Fuqua, and Joellen Drag. In 1975, Mariner was one of the first female military aviators to fly a tactical strike aircraft, a single seat A-4L Skyhawk. In 1976, she transitioned to the A-7E Corsair II, making her the first woman to fly a front-line tactical strike aircraft.

Mariner was named as a surface warfare officer aboard the USS Lexington in 1982, becoming the first female aviator assigned to an aircraft carrier. In 1987, Mariner became the first woman screened for command of an aviation unit in the U.S. Navy. In 1990, she became the first woman to command an aviation squadron in the Navy and was selected for major aviation shore command. During Operation Desert Storm, she commanded Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron Thirty Four (VAQ-34), flying the EA-7L and A-7E in Fleet training exercises. Mariner was president of the Women Military Aviators from 1991 to 1993. In April 1993, when Les Aspin removed restrictions on female pilots flying combat missions, Mariner, along with Jane Skiles O'Dea, Commander Lin Hutton, and Naval Reserve Commander Joellen Oslund, was one of the first female aviators selected for promotion to captain in the U.S. Navy.

Mariner's final military assignment was as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's Professor of Military Studies at the National War College. She retired after twenty-four years of military service, a veteran of seventeen carrier deployments with over 3,500 military flight hours in fifteen different Navy aircraft.

Mariner's career is detailed in several books, including Crossed Currents: Navy Women from World War I to Tailhook, Women in the Military: An Unfinished Revolution, Tailspin: Women at War in the Wake of Tailhook, and Ground Zero: The Gender Wars in the Military.

Mariner died on January 24, 2019, in Knoxville, Tennessee at the age of 65, following a five-year battle with ovarian cancer.

Mariner's funeral was held on February 2, 2019, during which the United States Navy conducted an all-female pilot flyover for the first time, performing a four F/A-18F aircraft Missing Man Flyover over New Loyston Cemetery in Maynardville, Tennessee.

Powerhouse, Norris Dam, Norris, TN by Warren LeMay Via Flickr: Built between 1933 and 1936, Norris Dam was constructed by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) as their first flood control and hydroelectric generation project, and stretches across the Clinch River between Campbell County and Anderson County, Tennessee. Named for George Norris (1861-1944), a senator from Nebraska whom was a key proponent of the Tennessee Valley Authority, created as part of the New Deal, the 265 foot (81 meter) high and 1,860 foot (570 meter) long concrete dam impounds the largest reservoir in the Tennessee River basin by surface area, covering 33,840 acres (137 square kilometers) with an 809 mile (1,302 kilometer) shoreline, with a catchment area of 2,912 square miles (7,540 square kilometers) and a surface elevation of 1,020 feet (310 meters). The reservoir averages 75 feet (23 meters) deep, with a maximum depth of 210 feet (64 meters) at the dam, and extends 73 miles up the Clinch River from the dam. The construction of the dam required the purchase of 152,000 acres of land, and displaced 2,841 families and 5,226 graves. The rural communities and towns of Loyston, Caryville, Big Barren, and Baker’s Forge were wiped out partially or entirely by the creation of the lake. The dam has several Modernist and Art Deco flourishes, and a Mid Century Modern visitor center, built circa 1953 upon the creation of Norris Dam State Park, that features a concrete butterfly roof and decorative mosaic tile panels. US Highway 441 crosses the top of the dam between Norris, Tennessee and Rocky Top, Tennessee, providing quick and easy access to the dam and lake from nearby Interstate 75. The first project to be completed by the Tennessee Valley Authority, the dam was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

Mariner is set to be laid to rest at New Loyston Cemetery in Maynardville, Tennessee on Feb. 2, 2019. Nine female aviators have since volunteered to fly a "missing woman" formation with one F/A-18E and four F/A-18F Super Hornets from Naval Air Station Oceana, Virginia, some 400 miles away.

  This is a nice little gossip bench, reminiscent of the old days when we all had “party lines”.  When we lived in Bryant Pond, my family had the old-fashioned crank (or “ringie-dingie”) phone, that was attached to the wall.  Mom would pick up the receiver and ask the operator to connect her to whomever she wanted to speak… often the operator would tell her that so and so had gone to “Loyston”…
