Muse + pets/animals in general
Pets:
Brândușa (grey-brown tabby cat)
Tigruța (calico cat)
Luna (black cat)
Suru (Carpathian Shepherd dog)
Relationship with animals in general:
Horia has always taken care of some sort of animal, ever since he was little, and has an excellent relationship with them. As a young nation, he’s managed to tame wolves (lupi), as they were an important symbolic animal to the Dacian people, bears (urși), which have been used to treat back pains, were known as sacred animals with healing powers by the Dacians, and also have a traditional dance based on them, and lynxes (râși), today Romania’s national animal.
Romanians have almost always been known as sheepherders, and our national ballad, Miorița, is based around a talking sheep (oaie), making it another important animal to Romanians, one which also carries heavy symbolism. Thus, Horia himself has been a shepherd, and is to this day quite fond of the animals. He will occasionally spend time with sheepherders if he happens to be in the countryside, and is more than happy to help them take care of their flocks. Some Romanians also celebrate Sâmbra oilor, which marks the beginning of the transhumance, the movement of livestock (mainly sheep) from the place they spent the winter in to summer pastures.
Horia is also fond of snakes (șerpi). In Romanian folklore, it is good for your home to have a snake, as it brings good luck, and keeps away sickness, fights, fires, earthquakes, and other horrible things. If your home snake leaves, your home will then be open to bad luck and malicious spirits. It is important that you don’t harm/kill your home snake. Horia himself has found snakes in old rural homes of his and has never killed any. Instead, he would place them wherever he’d have grains stored or in fields, hoping they’d catch mice. Oddly enough, Romanian folklore will sometimes portray the snake as an evil entity as well. In addition, in ancient times, the flag used by the Dacian people was the Dacian Draco, a wolf with the body of a snake.
Bats (lilieci) are animals Horia is accustomed to, and he’s personally always found them interesting, not because of stories like Dracula or other vampiric tales of the West, but because they are found in Romanian folklore as well. It is said that an emperor named Liliac entered the cave of an evil witch, who turned him into a bat, and then turned herself into a cat to chase the transformed emperor. The emperor hid during the day in a church’s bell, and at night went to get revenge on the witch by launching himself into her hair, causing her to scream. This prompted the villagers to get rid of the evil witch. In certain rural parts of Romania, bats were hung at gates to ward off evil spirits, or buried under houses to bring good luck. Like the snake, it is also sometimes seen as a symbol of evil.
Dogs (câini) and cats (pisici) are also favorites. Dogs have helped him and his people with shepherding, and Romania also has several dog breeds of its own. As for cats, they are a popular pet to have, and Romania also features a large population of wild cats.
