Mastering Numerical Differentiation: A Step-by-Step Guide with a Tough University-Level Assignment
Welcome to the fascinating world of numerical differentiation, where mathematical concepts meet real-world applications. In this blog, we will delve into a challenging university-level assignment on numerical differentiation. If you've ever felt overwhelmed by the complexities of this topic, fear not! We'll break it down, offering a comprehensive explanation and step-by-step guide to tackle a tough assignment question.
Understanding Numerical Differentiation:
Numerical differentiation is a mathematical technique used to estimate the derivative of a function at a particular point. Unlike analytical methods that involve intricate formulas, numerical differentiation relies on approximation methods to compute derivatives. One popular approach is the finite difference method, which involves finding the slope of a tangent line using small intervals.
Sample Assignment Question:
Consider the function f(x) = sin(x) + x^2. Find the derivative of f(x) at x = π using numerical differentiation with a step size of h = 0.1.
Step-by-Step Guide:
Step 1: Define the Function Begin by identifying the function you're working with. In our example, f(x) = sin(x) + x^2.
Step 2: Choose a Step Size (h) Select a small step size (h) to approximate the derivative. In this case, h = 0.1.
Step 3: Use the Finite Difference Method Apply the finite difference method to find the slope at x = π. Use the formula:
f′(x)≈ [f(x+h)−f(x)]/h .
Step 4: Substitute Values Plug in the values into the formula:
f′ (π)≈ [f(π+0.1)−f(π)]/0.1.
Step 5: Calculate the Result Compute the numerical derivative using the values from Step 4.

there were 90 days before the 2025 season would start. and, as promised, lando had decided to spend a few weeks or so at your house to try and gain approval from your parents, and also to spend time with you.
you had desperately missed him. it was usually the longer breaks in between races when lando could come visit you and spend some time with you. now, though, you had ample of time, and lando and you had planned to spend every second possible with each other.
lando got along with your parents well. your mother taught him recipes of your comfort food, your dad gave him secrets about you, your mother made him tea every morning, your dad watched cricket with him. they loved him enough to open their closest treasures. that was a win. a huge win.
it had been two weeks since lando was staying over. your parents had prepared the guest bedroom for him, and your father periodically checked throughout the night to make sure that you were in your bed and he was in his.
but, after two weeks of showing him your favourite places and forcing him to eat all your favourite food, the two of you finally had the house to yourself for a while.
having the house to yourself and having a hot boyfriend could only ever lead to one thing.
a random show was playing in the background on a low volume. lando was on top of you, his hands under your shirt, your hands in his hair. his lips were on yours, but once they began to trail down your neck, you couldn't stop the moans.
oh, how you loved your boyfriend.
"you're so beautiful, baby," he whispered against your neck, just as he sunk his teeth in a little bit, causing you to moan louder.
his hands under your shirt were travelling up, and you raised your arms to help him take your shirt off. it was almost off, and you were excited, but all good things came to an end.
the front door opened loudly, with your mother's voice ringing in the house, "beta! we're home!"
lando and you froze for a second. your shirt bunched up against your neck, almost off, and him laying on top you, the two of you froze.
"oh no," you whispered, before lando jumped into action. immediately, he got up from his position on top of you, and took a seat beside you, keeping a safe distance between the two of you, and a pillow on his lap.
you immediately pulled down your shirt, and sat up, running your fingers through your hair. just then, the door to your room opened and your mother said, "why was this door closed? we told you to keep it open all the time,"
she stopped, staring at the two of you and your slightly awkward behaviour.
"hi, mom," you cleared your throat, "how was the party?"
your mom was about to respond before her eyes zeroed in on something and she let out of a shriek. your father came running, "kya hua?"
you and lando shared a concerned look.
your mother quickly walked towards you, pushing your hair back as she stared at your neck, and your eyes went wide when you realised what she was looking at.
"yeh kya hai?" she shrieked.
"arre, mumma, kuch nahi," you said as you tried to push her away before your dad came in the room.
"kuchh nahi ka kya matlab? mein sab jaanti hu ki tum baccho ab kya kya karte hai!" she yelled, as you closed your eyes.
"kya ho gaya? itna kyu chilla rahi ho?" your dad asked as he walked closer, and you mentally started praying to every god and goddess you could remember.
"arre yeh ladke ne apki beti ka faayda uthaya!" she screamed, pointing at lando. lando, bless his heart, was frozen, unaware of how to proceed forward. he may not understand the language, but he knew they were mad at him. he could only guess why, because there really only seemed one option at the moment.
"hain?" your dad asked, as he moved closer to see what was wrong with you.
your mother, in the meanwhile, had grabbed the closest pillow she could find and began to repeatedly hit lando, "we trusted you! you said you were a good boy! you took advantage of our daughter!"
lando's hands were in the air as he tried to block the blows, "no, no! i swear! i'm a good boy! i didn't lie! i didn't take advantage of your daughter, i promise!"
"accha? then, what were you doing with her?" she asked, stopping the attack for a second while she glared at him.
"nothing! i swear! we were just watching the show her dad recommended!" lando pleaded. he looked at you, pleading to help him out, but your mother hit him with the pillow again.
"don't you dare look at her!"
you had had enough.
"okay, okay, stop!" you said as you put yourself between lando and your parents, who were both glaring at the boy behind you.
"he didn't take advantage of me." you stated.
"exactly!" lando chimed from behind, before quickly cowering again.
"really? because from what we can see, the two of you were about to do-" your dad cut off, looking away as he waved in the general direction of lando.
"no! no, we weren't!" you exclaimed.
"we weren't?" lando asked softly from behind you. you hit his knee, and he looked at your parents and said, "we weren't."
"we were watching mirzapur. lando told me that you told him to watch it because you love the show, and he wanted to bond with you over it," you lied.
your parents looked at the screen. it was indeed mirzapur playing.
"really?" your dad asked.
lando nodded from behind you, "yes, sir. i'm gonna marry your daughter one day, and i wanted to make sure i have a good relationship with her family as well,"
you turned to him, "aww, you wanna marry me someday?"
he smiled, "of course, pretty girl,"
"hey, hey, hey! don't distract us with the marriage talk. i know what i saw. i know what a hickey is," your mother said.
"mumma, we went to the parlour yesterday. remember when the hair dresser accidentally pressed the hot hair dryer against my neck and i told you it hurt?" you asked.
your mother eyed you, "yes,"
"this is just the bruise from that. i promise." you lied again.
your mother pulled the pillow back, and said, "fine."
it was silent for a few seconds before your dad said, "alright. you better get back to watching mirzapur. we'll discuss it over dinner." he said to lando, before turning to your mother, "chalo, we need to change out of our outside clothes,"
the two of them walked out of your room, and you heard your father ask, "how do you know what a hickey is?"
your mother tsked and slapped your father's arm, "chi. what kind of questions you ask your wife? have some shame,"
saying that, she walked away, leaving your father confused behind her.
slowly, you turned to lando, who still looked terrified.
"well, that was fun," you deadpanned.
"i don't think i'm ever gonna touch you again in front of you family," lando muttered.
you laughed, as you wrapped your arms around his neck, his hands instinctively holding your waist, and kissed him.
"welcome to the family, my love," you whispered.
he smiled against your lips, before he said, "i don't think i'll survive it," though, he held you tighter and kissed you deeper.
"y/n y/l/n and lando norris, i'm keeping an eye on the two of you!" your mother screamed, and the two of you immediately broke apart.
laughing a little bit, you settled on the bed beside him again, and clicked on the first episode of mirzapur, knowing your boyfriend was in for a serious discussion during dinner.
you leaned against him, his arm across your shoulder and he pressed a kiss against your temple.
he would survive your family just fine.

Get to Know Your Mutuals! tagged by @circle--of--confusion, tysm!! <3 (sorry it took me a while to do this)
what's the origin of your username? ...hehe (this one is obvious but my main is the name of a mediocre torchwood episode)
OTP(s) + shipname: not big into shipping tbh - for ghost i'll pick a ghoul who serves my nefarious purposes with the papa of the hour lmao
favourite colour: blue :3
song stuck in my head: do i have to say it (satanized!!!!!!!!)
weirdest habit/trait: i've got autism so weird traits are my diagnosis :/ i really enjoy getting piercings or blood tests/vaccinations which is apparently odd, and i'm so un-squeamish that it worries my mother
hobbies: besides yapping on the internet and looking at copia images (and writing/editing) i play piano and do muay thai! both are kind of difficult to access atm (there's only one piano on campus and my gym takes an hour to get to). i occasionally do western boxing too and have sailed a lot (dinghies & the odd yacht) but that's an impossibility with my current financial/academic situation
if you work, what's your profession? full time student atm, studying biomed engineering (electronics). i'm in my final year and am struggling. planning a potential career change to vet med but that'll have to be after a bit of work (& probably getting more lab experience)
if you could have any job you wish what would you have? vet!!! i'm back to where I was at 5 years old with that one. bad work experience put me off pursuing it straight out of school but i was an idiot 16 year old when i made that decision, and also didn't see a future for myself. i can see one now and i know what's right for it :D i'll be applying for accelerated grad courses next year if they'll accept my biomed (cough electronic cough engineering) degree for that
something you're good at: maths
something you hate: embedded programming and machine learning and signal processing and matlab and eagle pcb design oh my god dont get me started
something you collect: i don't collect anything but i do own 3 copies of the three musketeers. and i'll reach 4 i'm not messing around
something you forget: not much, not even nights out. i have autism
your love language: idk what counts as a love language tbh. i like being helpful or giving people things or generally doing something that makes them happy. but ig that's just what love is as a whole
favourite movies/shows: hannibal!!
favourite food: was rømmegrøt when i could still eat/access it but my current fav is laoganma chilli in oil ... laoganma BELOVED (my housemate gave me a cushion with laoganma printed on it with the corresponding maritime letter flags because she knows me very well)
favourite animal: my cat tommy (16yrs in these photos. isn't he stunning)
what were you like as a child? autistic
favourite subject in school: english!
least favourite subject: german, because it wasn't taught well (like any mfl in uk state schools from my experience) and nobody took it seriously
what's your best character trait? this one got me thinking because idk. but i think i'm very non-judgemental. got the mindset 'all people are people' to an extreme
what's your worst character trait? i can get quite jealous, and not to be tmi but the emotional dysregulation is bad. won't elaborate 😭
if you could change any detail of your life right now, what would it be? also a bit tmi but i'd love for my father to be a real one sometimes
if you could travel in time, who would you like to meet? the set of great-grandparents on my mother's side who i never got to meet :') they were my mum's real parents and i think i would have loved them
tagging (no pressure as per usual and i'm sorry if anyone here has already been tagged!)-- @unsettlingcreature @watertankafternoon @vpyre @delullu @lilspacewolfie @dolceterzo @sadistic-cardinal :3
#going under a readmore because i can't shut up on this site#i have 2 more pets- cat ginger & labrador lola#love them both to bits but tommy is the number one forever & always#had him since i was 6 and he's the light of my life to be completely honest. i miss him so much#anyway ty for the tag !!! <3

Mere liye pyaar ka matlab ho tum! - Part 3

Radhe & Tamanna from Bandish Bandits
Does he love her? Well if I had started writing this post yesterday I would have said no because at that point in time I couldn't think of a single thing as evidence to prove that he does but having had the time to mull it over and re-watching so much of season 2, I have realised that he does. Radhe loves Tamanna but clearly nowhere near how much she loves him and I don't think he realises that because from his perspective she is always walking away but if you look at how much she does for him and how much she cares about him, it would be a no-brainer.
I just realised that Kabir literally tells Radhe that he should just accept that he is the villain of Tamanna's story and be done with it and he is right. I am coming to realise that so much of what I didn't agree with in the show was actually because of a lack of insight on my own part.
Season 1 vs 2

I feel like it is more obvious in season 1 that Radhe loves Tamanna because he actually shows it more which is largely because they do have more screen time together in season 1 (or at least it feels that way since they are actually together that season). He has never wanted to let her go but he has respected her choice to go every time.
The most memorable scene in this regard from season 1 is the moment when he tells Tamanna how brave she is and how he wishes he had an ounce of her bravery. Another that comes to mind is him encouraging her and helping her practise so that she can sing live in front of an audience.
Then there is season 2. Of course, there are the big showy dialogues like - मेरे लिए प्यार का मतलब हो तुम। That entire scene is packed with so much angst on Radhe's part especially the whole 'तो कैसे समझलूँ की सब कुछ ठीक है, वो किसी और के साथ है, मैं उसका अतीत हूँ, कैसे?' with the '...क्योंकि आज तक में इसी विश्वास के साथ जी रहा हूँ कि अंत में तुम मेरी हो।' But, the most interesting part of that conversation is that despite the fact that he just saw Tamanna kiss someone else he still loves her. That is a big admission.
But I feel like the truest evidence of his love for Tamanna is in season 2 episode 7 aptly titled 'Bandish Bandits'. That episode is so good on so many levels but especially the focus on Radhe and Tamanna's relationship both past and present.
Yes, we are finally going to discuss the viral jugalbandi moment that started off this essay but as per usual we first need to lay the groundwork leading up to the moment.
The Groundwork
But before we get deep into the groundwork we need to talk about one underrated moment which is the conversation these two share immediately after my most favourite scene of season 2.
It's also part of the groundwork we need to lay so let's get started.
1. Radhe refuses to battle against Royalty Free
He specifically isn't happy that they will be battling against Tamanna's band. I'm pretty sure he doesn't want to be the one who knocks her out of the competition. I don't think he wants to be the roadblock on her path to success.
Immediately after the selection he apologises to Tamanna but in the conversation that follows he says something that is the biggest evidence of how much he loves her. He tells her that he knows that she doesn't feel happy or confident with him - that is BIG. For him to know that, no matter how much he wants to be with her or how much he loves her, she isn't happy with him is frankly amazing. He accepts her decision once again but tells her that having her in his life is very important to him and he will change himself to make that possible. This is possibly the conversation that made me realize that there is no way Radhe doesn't love Tamanna it's just that their relationship has been very harmful to her and he knows that.
It is amazing that at the end of this conversation, she refuses to help him in this round but they both end up helping each other nevertheless.
2. Tamanna doesn't want to take the lead on this song
I am totally going to refrain from mentioning that Tamanna is literally singing the song of this round 'I'm Waiting for You' for Radhe. The lyrics aren't really subtle and if they managed to fly by your head her actions on stage certainly aren't.
But, some interesting things do happen before Tamanna is chosen to sing lead in this round, so let's get those down. Firstly the whole, "वैसे में normal होना नहीं चाहता" which follows the most Bollywood style of foreshadowing by having Tamanna and Radhe go round and round echoing a Hindu marriage 'phera' and the place this is all happening in is literally dripping with flowers like a mandap. That is the intention which is just made very on the nose by that overhead shot and by the fact that Radhe who is initially only walking back and forth starts going around in circles once Tamanna starts walking behind him followed by the fact that he doesn't see her coming when it would be very hard not to.
Tamanna is the right choice for this song because this song is literally her story but performing it next to Radhe is her biggest challenge. It's weird how she is literally singing the song for him but his presence is what is fueling her insecurity.
Tamanna has had a horrible track record so far in singing next to Radhe on a public platform and the only time she has done it is when they sing Chedkhaniyaan for the other participants of the IBC in a rather informal setting. Also, I have an entire post to make about Chedkhaniyaan but for now, just remember that this is the only time she has managed to hold her own when singing next to Radhe.
She even talks about how she knows she will fail because she can't hit the high notes he can. But, Nandini ma'am convinces her that she is the right choice for this song because the song is literally her story and Tamanna is a storyteller (I really love how this season gives Tamanna the props for being such an incredible music composer).
Burdened with her insecurities, Tamanna turns to Radhe. It is insane how he is the reason for her insecurities but in her head also the only person who can drive them away - तू दवा भी और मर्ज़ भी।
I guess it makes sense he was the only one who made her feel confident enough to attempt singing live the first time, it makes sense that in her head he can do this again. It's also emblematic of the fact that when we are in distress we turn to the people we love most not the ones who love us most because when we love someone we believe them and I guess the truly lucky love most those who love them most.
And we are finally here after three posts and I think I am going to leave the big discussion for the next post but the next post is hopefully going to be the conclusion. Fingers crossed.
Onwards to part four!
Part One I Part Two I Part Three I Part Four I Conclusion

Hello, I'm starting college soon, majoring in statistics. When I mention my course, people often warn me about its difficulty and hope I'll manage to stay through all years. Could you provide tips on how to persevere until the fourth year? And I want to advance study. What should I focus on studying? Also, would you recommend a laptop or a tablet/ ipad?
Thank youu :3
Hello! I got a lot of the same comments when I picked stats as my major🥲
Two things are key to persevering through a stats degree, (1) not beating yourself up when you fail and (2) reaching out for help when you don’t understand something. Stats has a lot of disconnected but continually reappearing topics and you’ll get confused and fail sometime- that is perfectly okay and normal, you just have to learn to let it roll off your back and do better next time! This is when my second tip of reaching out to professors, other students, or uni resources come in. Your professors want you to understand the content (or at the very least are paid to ensure you understand the content)- go to them when you don’t understand something! There is no shame in asking for help.
All calc, especially your multivariate calc, is very relevant to statistics, so I’d brush up on your calc 1 and calc 2 skills if it’s been a while since you’ve used them. Additionally, I’d review probability rules, and basic things like finding means and variances. Later on, you’ll cover “distributional results.” When you get to these, absolutely keep a running list of these results that you frequently look over!
For narrowing down your interests, I’d recommend exploring finance courses, science courses (chem/bio), and coding courses. Statistics is a super versatile degree and there’s a lot of freedom and flexibility!
I would 100% recommend a laptop for two reasons. As a statistics student, you will likely be coding a good bit; mostly in R, but probably in SAS, python, and possibly matlab as well. As far as I’m aware, there’s no software that allows you to adequately code in these languages on a tablet/iPad. Secondly, hand writing on paper is much better for retention. I have an iPad as well, but I only really use it for homework to save the trees from all my scratch work😅 you could accomplish the same effect with a white board and marker. All of my notes (and even sometimes my homework and practice problems) are on paper since you retain the info significantly better. My friends in the stats major who also have an iPad or tablet for notes have also switched to using pen and paper over the years to help with retention since there’s a lot you need to have memorized.
Feel free to reach out with any more questions, and good luck! You’ve got this ~~

It's pretty striking just how powerful abstraction and programming can be. In my fourth year, I struggled with a final project where I spent days deriving the transfer functions for a 3 state variable, 5 force variable system. No individual part of the derivation was difficult, but it was long and tedious, and it's very easy to make some trivial error in 8 pages of hand written math that fucks everything up.
Now that I'm TAing the same class, and helping students with the same project, I can bring to bear my better understanding of matlab, and greater experience working with linear systems of differential equations, and I realized the code to solve this problem programatically looks something like this:
syms Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q state = [Ca Cb Tr Ca0 Cb0 Tr0 Tj Q]; steadyState = [2.5 1.5 325 4 0 300 350 50]; dState = [ Q*(Ca0 - Ca) - 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca; Q*(Cb0 - Cb) + 2*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 3*exp(1/Tr)*Cb; Q*(Tr0 - Tr) - 12*exp(1/Tr)*Ca - 15*exp(1/Tr)*Ca + Tj - Tr; ]; JdState = double(subs(jacobian(dState, state), state, steadyState)); A = JdState(:,1:3); B = JdState(:,4:end); s = tf('s'); G = (eye(3)*s - A)\B
That's it, a dozen lines of code. With a few tweaks, I could generalize this by parameterizing values that are currently just magic constants. With a few more tweaks I could generalize this to solve almost any system, all the user would need to do is provide the dState matrix and identify which variables are force variables and which variables are state variables.
It took me longer to write out this post than it did for me to solve that system, while it took me 3 days and an entire notebook of derivations to do it 7 years ago.
