Woofcast 687: db Sold his MINI
We managed to rally together one more time before closing out 2022! A quick not to the affliates, we do go long. We are pretty sure all y'all won't mind. Catching up, db sold his MINI (and replaced it with a bicycle). His garage is now home to a BMW X3, which there will be more words about that coming (like, it really should be a wagon).
Then, the latest news from MotoringFile, as usual! If you missed Gabe's review of the BMW X1, go check it out if you want to find out what the next version of the Countryman will be like. We get filled on on life with a non-JCW MINI in Gabe's garage with a horrible name, product code relevations and spy shots of the G56, plus some other information you will find to be very interesting.
Oh, yea. Feather bowling is totally a thing.
For those of you that have missed it, we are still recording Black Roof Radio!. Click through for access to the most recent episodes, all available **FREE OF CHARGE**! Also, as db mentioned, RSS is not dead! You can still follow and subscribe to your favorite sites using any of the latest versions of RSS Readers. Check out NetNewsWire (yes, it's back!) for OSX/IOS, Aggregator for Android and Newsflow on Windows! Any of these will let you subscribe and help break you of your social media habit!

Doubts for defending bike champ Walkner after suspected ankle injury
The marathon stage four of the Dakar Rally kicked off today from Arequipa to Tacna with 663km of liaison followed by 405km of racing. The battle of the cars heats up between Al-Attiyah and Peterhansel, while Walkner’s fate is shrouded in doubt after an injury. Here’s all you need to know:
-In the car category, Nasser Al-Attiyah of Toyota Gazoo Racing SA again dominated the fourth stage with a time of 3 hours and 38 minutes. Yesterday’s stage winner Stéphane Peterhansel of X-Raid Mini Jcw Team had yet another strong performance, only just under 2 minutes off rival Al-Attiyah’s pace, followed by Jakub Przygonski of Orlen X-Raid Team, third.
-Al-Attiyah has now developed just under a 9 minute lead in the general standings over Peterhansel. The Qatari said: “I’m quite happy today. We won the stage, but there is perhaps still a faster car out there. It was very important to catch Stéphane and stay with him all the way. Yeah, I’m quite happy. Everything is ok – there are no problems. Later we will check the car. There is still a long way to go. Me and Stéphane we are in the lead now and I’m quite happy, we’ll just keep going like this”.
-Sebastian Loeb (Red Bull privateer – PH Sport) suffered 30mins of lost time after suffering three of punctures, but recovered well placing fifth, and sitting just over 12 minutes off the pace.
-Carlos Sainz recovered well from yesterdays suspension disaster, which cost him his shot to reclaim his title, remaining in the top 10 after the fourth stage in 7th, ahead of fellow X-Raid Mini JCW Teammate Cyril Desires, eighth.
-In the bike category, Ricky Brabec (Honda) set a cracking pace in the marathon stage with a time of 3 hours and 40 minutes. However, the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team proved to be formidable opponents and were hot on the American’s heels with Matthias Walkner nabbing second ahead of Toby Price and Sam Sunderland, fourth, conceding just over 11 minutes from the lead.
-Defending champion Matthias Walkner, was unrelenting in the final push for the finish in Tacna, but a heavy landing after a jump resulted in a suspected ankle injury in the last 50kms of the marathon stage, shrouding tomorrow’s stage with doubt for the Austrian.
-Walkner revealed: “My ankle feels quite hurt. Fifty kilometres before the end I did a big jump and landed heavily. First I was thinking, ok, maybe it’s broken. It’s really painful now, but we will see how it is tomorrow and I’m going to put some ice on it. It was ok in the end [for the marathon stage], because I didn’t crash and the bike is running well, plus we are like a big group and a team and we help each other, so everything is good”.
-In the quad category, Nicolas Cavigliasso of Drag’on Rally Team took the stage win with a time of 4 hours and 52 minutes ahead of Jeremias Gonzalez (Ferioli Ferioli Racing Team) and Alexandre Giroud (Team Giroud), third, 7 minutes and 35 seconds off the pace.
-In the SxS category, two-time Dakar quad race winner Ignacio Casale is holding steady pace, keeping in the Top 10 after four stages.
-In the truck category, the Kamaz Masters dominated the marathon stage as Andrey Karginov took the win with a time of just over 4 hours and 9 minutes, with Martin Macik (Big Shock Racing) trailing by 1.5 minutes.
-Fellow Kamaz Master and race leader Eduard Nikolaev recovered from a problem on the 27km mark, clawing his way back to third ahead of fellow teammate Dmitry Sotnikov.

Half Price Hot Hatch: R56 Mini Cooper S JCW
MINI’s JCW (that’s John Cooper Works) name is older than you might think. Its heritage stretches back to John Cooper, the British racing driver and engineer who not only pioneered the rear-engined layout in single-seat racers, but also figured out that the Issigonis-designed BMC Mini would make a rather good race and rally car. A point that went on to be proved most famously by Paddy Hopkirk’s fabled win in the 1964 Monte Carlo rally.
Admittedly, the raucous, 1.6-litre turbocharged, 208bhp, front-wheel drive ‘R56’ version of the MINI JCW we are focusing on as today’s Half Price Hot Hatch is a long way from the original Mini in nature. But the fact you can now buy a second-hand one from as little as £6,000 is something to be celebrated.
Launched in 2008 and then in production for six years, this particular JCW is based on the second generation of BMW’s reimagined modern MINI. Its high price put it up against more practical but equally rapid competition including the Ford Focus ST and Honda Civic Type R, but it had enough MINI magic to justify the price. Compact yet butch, and with an aggressive theatricality (not to mention a premium badge and a tendency to hold its value far better than its rivals), the Mini JCW had a lot going for it then, just as it does now.
THE DRIVE Finesse isn’t one of those things, though. If you want a precise, textural front-wheel-drive track car, look to a Renaultsport Clio rather than the MINI. The JCW is about brute speed, a delightfully parpy exhaust, and blunt but grippy cornering.
A 0-62mph time of 6.5sec arrives in a fizz of turbo whine from the four-cylinder engine (actually a unit borrowed from Peugeot), which has a bigger turbo, modified valves and cylinder head, and a more free-flowing exhaust over the standard Cooper S. Stick it in Sport mode for maximum overboost thrills, and it’s beyond 5,000rpm that the JCW’s modifications really show, with usefully better high-end responses than you’d enjoy in lesser MINI models.
An electronic diff-lock can apportion up to 100 per cent of the power to either wheel and helps to give the JCW the ability to claw its way out of corners with liberal early-on-the-throttle forgiveness. Just be wary of the odd squirm of torque steer, but otherwise this most tenacious of MINIs (short of the hardcore, limited-run GP version) is almost like a small, front-wheel-drive Subaru Impreza STi.
Certainly, it has a similar bolshie brutality to its heavy steering and planted, chuckable handling – and the same insatiable appetite for rabid point-to-point drives. Which in turn will make you all the more grateful for the impressive stopping power of the standard Brembo brakes.
One pay-off for all this gumption is the stiff suspension. Certainly, a Volkswagen Golf GTI will be a more comfortable daily driver, but the MINI JCW will still be a fine daily commuter for anyone that’s keen to keep the hot hatch thrills near the surface of their driving experience. It’ll even do 40mpg in sensible use and there’s an automatic gearbox on offer, too, although the manual is much more fun.
CHECK POINTS The scariest thing that’s prone to going wrong on the R56 Mini Cooper and JCW models is the hydraulic timing chain tensioner, which – if weakening – will emit a rattle or brushing noise when the engine’s cold. This was improved on post- 2011 models, but even so, keep an ear out for the so-called ‘death rattle’ and be prepared to regularly top up the oil to help prevent this happening; the JCW will likely use a litre of oil every 1,000 miles or so.
Cars built between 2007 and 2011 should have been seen for a recall affecting the water pump, too, while poor idling can suggest coke build-up, and it’s worth being alert to clutch feel as these can also go at surprisingly low mileages. The sunroof is also a known weak point with this generation of MINI and it can start to leak or become reluctant to open or close.
With such potential issues to be aware of, it could be worth paying more up front for a meticulously maintained JCW to minimise the chance of expensive bills. For the same reason, a post-2011 car is a better bet if you can stretch to it, plus it’ll benefit from the improved interior that came in with a 2010 facelift.

2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign
New Post has been published on http://toyotacamryusa.com/2017/04/2018-toyota-yaris-hatchback-redesign/
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign – The changes are, undoubtedly, only skin deep. Beneath, the 2018 isn’t really anticipated to be considerably transformed from the 2017, which has actually only been upgraded lightly given that the 2012 model year. That’s a long time in little cars and truck years, yet the 2018 Yaris has a make over throughout plus it’s better-equipped.
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign
The 2018 Yaris Hatchback will certainly once more be offered in L, LE, as well as SE trim degrees that start rather spartan as well as wind up rather flashy. L and LEs share styling that’s a little much less cartoonish for 2018, with new front and also back bumpers as well as modified wheel designs. The SE has its own look outside with a glossy black mesh-like grille as well as special 16-inch alloy wheels.
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesigns
Motivated and influenced by Toyota’s return to the Globe Rally Champion in 2017 with the Yaris WRC, the GRMN obtains its juice (surprisingly enough) from a supercharged engine and it’s the business’s first foray into a niche controlled by Volkswagen as well as Ford. Developed with Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s motorsport division, and also evaluated on the Nurburgring, the Toyota Yaris could have exactly what it takes to provide the Polo GTi and Carnival ST a run for the money.
2018 Toyota Yaris Redesign
The modifications are, admittedly, only skin deep. Below, the 2018 isn’t expected to be considerably transformed from the 2017, which has actually just been updated lightly since the 2012 model year. That’s a very long time in little vehicle years, however the 2018 has a face-lift in and out– plus it’s better-equipped.
The 2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback will certainly once more be available in L, LE, and SE trim degrees that begin instead spartan and also wind up rather sporty. L and LEs share styling that’s a little less cartoonish for 2018, with new front and rear bumpers and also revised wheel styles. The SE has its very own look outside with a shiny black mesh-like grille and also special 16-inch alloy wheels.
2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback Redesign Review
2018 Toyota Yaris Interior
A performance-oriented Toyota Yaris is the best news that comes from this specific niche in a very long time. With just the Polo GTi and the Carnival ST around for quite a few years, you don’t have too many choices, unless you agree to invest more for the a little bigger Mini Cooper JCW. Hyundai could too introduce a beefed-up i20 quickly, however without main statement yet, it’s quite clear that this section will certainly continue to be limited as for alternatives choose a couple of more years. The Yaris GRMN will definitely include a little bit of enjoyment to the race, along with offer Volkswagen and also Ford something to stress over.
For the 2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback design year, Toyota has given the Yaris tweaked appearances and more basic as well as offered functions. (Have no fear, we checked, as well as it’s definitely still a vehicle.) The subcompact’s schedule continues to be the very same, with 2- as well as four-door hatchback body styles readily available in L and also LE trims as well as an SE design covering the four-door variety.
2018 Toyota Yaris Review, Specs, Release Date
The new front and also rear designing of the 2018 Yaris wased initially seen on the Europe-market Yaris GRMN that made its debut previously this month, although that variation also wore some performance-themed add-ons. While the cars and truck’s squeezed nose as well as gaping-mouth grille rollover below, the 2018 L and LE showcase a new front fascia that drops the top grille and blends the new body-colored nose with the bumper as well as hood. Two chrome trim pieces extend external from the logo design, satisfying the revamped fronts lights. The 2018 Toyota Yaris Hatchback SE version is distinguished by a black mesh grille with a chrome surround and also 16-inch aluminum wheels with dark accents. At the rear, the Yaris has been redesigned with wider taillights and also a brand-new bumper. There is a brand-new shade, Blue Eclipse, which is offered with a body-color or Black Sand Pearl roof.
