My own idea of how John Dory and Hickory met, a little related to my fankid Sunshine.

JD comes back to the tree a few years after he went to the nevergalde, later than he would have liked but he had been awfully unprepared for it so instead of being gone a year or two max like he wanted it was four/five. But he comes back and can't find anyone, think the worst has happened and goes grey before he returns to the Neverglade where he's going to isolate even more.

They meet by accident. Hickory and Dickory are in the Neverglade for a bounty and come too close to the place where John Dory is hiding. Thinking that they're here to harm him (paranoid, grey, half-feral JD) John attacks them first. He has Hickory at knife point, growling and snarling and Hickory falls in love (he's insane and Dickory will forever hold this against him lol)

What would've happened if Derek actually saw Machette approaching him in that one scene?

That would change things. There’s a chance Machete would react quick enough and slash at him, and he could die anyway. But if he jumps up and out of reach in time, he might be able to get away (let’s say it’s clear that Machete can’t kill him easily anymore, and he decides to flee)

Derek would see you differently. He knows you saved his life this time, even after all he’s done for you. He’d probably look at you, confused, in silence for a minute— he doesn’t know what to think. He might even call you idiotic for not letting him die, but you can tell the threat isn’t all there this time.

He’d still grab and sedate you, but this time it’s only partly for revenge, and partly because he wants you for himself. He doesn’t want the others to get you, you’re his. You’ve just shown him that.

At home, he’d treat you more or less the same— but he would think of you differently. Derek isn’t used to people actually doing nice things for him, or wanting him around, and you just saved his life. He’d still be awful to you, because that’s what he likes; but he may spare some cruelty because you did save him. Obviously MC would never know the difference, because torture is torture, but it would be there.

I think Derek would get attached to you easier in this scenario. He would get serious Lima syndrome.

Let’s be real, Mr Crawling would see Zag once and be like “hyper short man with weapon? Fun!”

I imagine only some shades end up fully animated (like Achilles and Odysseus), most end up little blob guys like good shade, but occasionally a shade can get ‘corrupted’ and they end up like the homicipher ghosts. Zags clueless ass finds them in random chambers and will either befriend them (like crawling, masque and hood) or fight them (like Scarletella and machette). Occasionally a rat bastard™️ ghost (gap and the hooded kid) will mess with him. He asks around what the hell they are, but people are weirdly cagey about it, so he has to decode them himself.

Also he is absolutely the kind of guy who’d think ‘well I can be re-born anyway, may as well let gap take my limbs just to see what happens’
