Indiana Jones and the Great Circle (Xbox Series)

I had a 3 month Xbox Game Pass trial burning a hole in my pocket going in to last Christmas, so I decided to spend my holiday streaming the new Indy game. What a perfect holiday game: fun, exciting, clever and accessible, and a rare tie-in to a favourite movie franchise that does the subject matter justice.

Machine Games flex their expertise in atmospheric first person action-adventure to deliver just the right flavour. You feel like Indiana Jones, in Indiana Jones environments, when you’re throwing a punch at an authentically realised bumbling Nazi goon or whip-swing your way across a vine-covered dusty tomb, each little animation flourish or incidental detail artfully matched to the style of the films. Writing, voice work and music are equally faithful - the prologue sequence nicely demonstrates that the developers get Indy.

But it’s the substance of the game which makes it such an absorbing romp. Thrilling and cleverly conceived linear adventures alternate with substantial free-roaming areas where Indy works towards solving the mystery of the Great Circle. You might kick off with a nicely paced tomb-delving expedition, move on to a bit of thrilling but forgiving stealth in a fascist camp, then try to puzzle out a riddle while scouring the map for a missing cat. The tasks are plentiful enough to offer enjoyable diversions, but few enough to remain distinct and interesting.

Great Circle marries an immersive sim’s sense of place, player agency and invitation to experiment with the approachability and fun of a mainstream action adventure. If there were enough developers with this kind of talent, I’d say this was the model for movie turns going forward; I dare say it won’t be that easy.

Easily the most fun and most innovative licensed game since Alien Isolation. Everybody’s in for a treat when Indy starts showing up on other platforms this year.
