I made the little "rainbow" from the kit and it was NOT fun. Wrapping string around extra floppy other string is just annoying.
Tumblr media
Ruler for scale because it's smaller than it looks.
I think the bead is too big to be properly aesthetically pleasing, I should try and find another one.

Friends in fiber crafts!
DMC is having a promotional sale to get a free petite version of their gorgeous antique floss chest if you buy one of their bundles! If you embroider a lot with their floss it might be worth it for you to get one of these bundles because it saves you like 40% on the total cost of individual floss. I would love to take part in this promotion, but alas. I am a humble grad student living off loans. So hopefully someone out there can get the chest and maybe send me pictures of it. It looks so pretty.
Also.
Folks might not be aware, but DMC has free patterns on their website. Including Halloween patterns. Here’s one I picked at random:
Tumblr media
This is a great resource for people who want to get into cross stitch and embroidery but don’t have the resources to buy patterns and kits. People ask me a lot about where they can get patterns for embroidering and I usually direct them here.
They also have free patterns and VIDEO TUTORIALS for embroidery, knitting, crochet, macrame, and other fiber crafts.
Autumn is the best time to get a new hobby. You should do it.

Tumblr please help hold me accountable, I have too many new crafts I want to try and my brain is kicking my ass on the topic of actually attempting any of them. I promise I will tackle whatever comes top of this poll over the next few days, and post at least some sort of result to prove it. (Note that I do have materials and/or at least one starter kit for every craft here listed, so I can't wiggle out on grounds of "not having the supplies".)
All votes appreciated, thank you!

I just did a "diagonal double half hitch knot" (not joking thats what it's called) (circled in red in the second photo) and oh my god. The instructions on the kit's guide were too vague and I had to look up how to do it. This is not soothing, people who do macrame are crazy

tips for how you can use the library for other things than books.
don't own any streaming services or tv show/movie not on your streaming servie?? go see if you local library has the movie/tv show and even if they don't they can see if any branches within you county has it and then have it shipped to them for you to pick up
want to host a private event like a dnd group, magic the gathering gaming, local small club, small organization or just need a quiet place to do work/study/take a test (this only applies if your local libarary doesn't have study rooms) Book the meeting room.
Depending on where you are your local library might have other things to check out that isn't books or digital media. For example my library has museum passes and board games you can check out. A library my coworker used to work at in Arizona has seeds you could check out. So don't be afraid to ask what other option you have.
HAVE A KID??? but can't really afford to take them to fun/nice things because of this econmeny look at what events you library offers (sure you might have to drive to a different city/town BUT ITS FREE) (also the usually have really fun things during the summer for example I think this summer we had some people from NASA talk with the kids and give a presentation at our main branch)
Speaking of events they aren't only for kids. All departments has events including YA and Adults. Yes adults has events examples can be decorate your own wine glass (you get a free wine glass), or make your own key chain???
speaking of making your stuff most libraries usually have activities you can take home for example right now at my library we have a macrame hanging plant holder kit for adults to take home..
ALSO BACK TO KIDS because kiddos and their education is important. Libraries have this neat little thing called playviews and Launchpads. Playviews is basically portable tv screen that is loaded with education tv shows that is based on a theme (like pbs) and Luanchpads is tablet that is preloaded with educational games and they are usually themed by subject. They are a great way to enterain your kid and educate them. And honestly if you are going to public event where you have to bring your kid but you know your kids is gonna be board just check out one of these badboys.
this is sorta breaking the rules but I am adding it anyway if You are parent on here maybe or maybe not your might be a new parent. The library has a section in the kids section called Parents books that you can read to your children. They are basically picture books but they adress touchy topics or topics that require an explaintion. such as race, bullying, dealing with emotions, LGBTQ(becuae we live in a hetronormtive socity), Gender Idity (again hetronormtive socity) Loss of a loved one, moving to a new place, ectra. These are great tools if you and your child are going through something and you don't want keep your out of the dark but also don't know how explain to them on a level they would understand.
WE HAVE PRINTERS AND SCANNERS!!!! usealy you have up a certain number of prints you have until you have to pay.
WE ALSO HAVE COMPUTERS WITH THE INTERNET!!!
TLDR
LIBRARIES ARE HERE FOR PEOPLE OF ALL ECONICMIAL STATIS BUT ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE TIGHT ON MONEY. so eiher call or go check out your local library system and see what services they can offer you.
ALSO LIBRARIANS OF TUMBLR IF I MISSED ANYTHING FEEL FREE TO ADD

I'm doing a kind of winter solstice celebration today. It's a few days past but it's just to mark the occasion. I didn't have time to really think about it a lot.
Having a slow cooker pumpkin curry but subbed in some kūmara because it's strongly associated with this season (unfortunately it's also $15/kg this year which makes it the most expensive vegetable available).
We have a fancy dessert.
Going to try a spiced coffee!
Invited my Mum over.
I like to do gift but wasn't sure what to do but the kinder surprises at the supermarket are supposed to be "ice" themed so got them.
Maybe have candles, I like light symbolism at this time.
Also a book I ordered online for my husband arrived and I gave myself a macrame kit I already had. Like, activities for being indoors for winter.
I was given a bunch of flowers that contained dry flowers so hung them up seperately - seems appropriate since there are so few flowers now. BUT also the bunch of flowers and leaves was all from her garden so it's all appropriate right now. The rest are in the hall.
Tumblr media
Oh, and I bought some mead, which was an unexpected find at the supermarket. Shh, it's a secret!
I guess the idea of the winter solstice is to prepare for the cold couple of months coming, while also celebrating light. Also about hope, and faith in the sun actually doing it's thing. Maybe appreciating the small changes and believing they mean something.

I made my first macrame thing! I've only procrastinated on this kit since June, and on macrame generally for a few decades.
The first thing in the kit is supposed to be earrings, but I don't need earrings so I just did one and added on a bit extra, and hung it on the wall.

Gotta say, it was probably one of the easiest things I've ever done.

Eco-Friendly Gifts for Sustainable Celebrations
In a world where conscious living is becoming more than just a trend, gift-giving is getting a much-needed green makeover. Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, wedding, or festive occasion, more people are opting for meaningful, planet-friendly presents that reflect both love and responsibility. And yes—sustainability can be romantic too! Think of surprise romantic gifts that not only express your love but also contribute to a healthier planet. Whether it’s a heartfelt handmade token or an earth-loving experience, sustainable gifts can feel just as luxurious and personal as traditional ones—sometimes even more so.
The art of gifting has evolved from material possessions to shared values. More than just giving a present, it’s about making a statement—showing someone you care not only about them, but also about the world they live in.
Why Choose Eco-Friendly Gifts?
Traditional gifts often come with a hidden environmental cost—non-recyclable wrapping paper, plastic-heavy packaging, and mass-produced items that don’t last. Choosing eco-friendly alternatives helps reduce waste, supports ethical businesses, and encourages others to make sustainable choices too.
Here are a few reasons to go green with your gifting:
Minimizes environmental impact
Supports local artisans and small businesses
Reduces single-use plastic and overconsumption
Makes the gift more personal and intentional
Promotes sustainable lifestyles
Whether you’re shopping for a conscious friend, a partner who appreciates thoughtful gestures, or simply want to align your gift-giving habits with your values, sustainable gifting is the way forward.
Thoughtful Surprise Romantic Gifts With a Green Twist
You don’t need flashy jewelry or a grand gesture to spark romance—especially when you're choosing surprise romantic gifts with meaning. In fact, some of the most touching gifts are also the simplest and most eco-friendly.
Here are a few romantic and sustainable ideas to consider:
1. A Plant With a Love Note
Gift your partner a potted indoor plant with a hand-written love letter tied around it. Not only does it symbolize growth, but it’s also a long-lasting reminder of your affection.
2. Organic Chocolate & Wine Set
Support local or sustainable brands that offer organic, fair-trade chocolate and natural wines. Pair it with a cozy night in or a rooftop date under the stars.
3. Personalized Bamboo Keepsakes
From engraved bamboo photo frames to customized coasters or keychains, bamboo is a renewable material that’s both stylish and sustainable.
4. DIY Romantic Picnic
Pack a zero-waste picnic with reusable containers, cloth napkins, and local produce. Head to a nature spot and surprise your partner with a thoughtful outdoor date.
5. Subscription to a Meditation or Yoga App
Give the gift of calm and self-care. Many apps offer eco-conscious meditation themes and stress-relief guides perfect for couples to do together.
These surprise gifts balance thoughtfulness with sustainability, making them extra special for romantic celebrations like anniversaries, proposals, or even spontaneous date nights.
Eco-Friendly Gifts That Everyone Will Appreciate
Sustainability is no longer niche—it’s now a beautiful part of everyday life. And eco-friendly gifts don’t have to be boring or plain. They come in stylish, creative, and heartfelt forms suitable for every celebration.
For Birthdays
Reusable Journals or Notebooks made from recycled paper or cork
Seed Bombs to plant flowers or herbs in a backyard or balcony
Sustainable Skincare Kits with natural, cruelty-free products
Recycled Fabric Tote Bags with a custom design or quote
Solar-powered Gadgets like lanterns or mini chargers
For Weddings
Personalized Jute Hampers filled with organic goodies
Terrariums or Mini Planters as wedding favors
Couples’ Cooking Kit with reusable utensils and organic spices
Fair Trade Home Décor items like handmade macrame or cushion covers
Donations to Environmental Charities in the couple’s name
For Festivals
Handmade Soy Wax Candles with natural scents
DIY Sustainable Gift Boxes with upcycled or edible items
Zero-Waste Gift Wrapping Kits (cloth wraps, dried flowers, reusable tags)
Compostable Greeting Cards embedded with wildflower seeds
Artisan-Made Ornaments using natural materials like coconut shell or wood
These gifts promote eco-consciousness while still delivering that warm, fuzzy feeling that gifting is all about.
Budget-Friendly Green Gift Ideas
Going green doesn’t mean going broke. Plenty of eco-conscious gifts are affordable and easy to personalize:
Upcycled Jewelry made from scrap metal or recycled glass
Plantable Pencils with seeds that grow herbs or flowers
DIY Candle Making Kits with beeswax or soy wax
Reusable Coffee Cups or Bamboo Cutlery Sets
Organic Cotton Socks or Scarves
These are perfect for colleagues, secret Santa exchanges, or thoughtful just-because gifts.
Sustainable Gift Wrapping Ideas
It’s not just about the gift—presentation matters too! Traditional wrapping paper often isn’t recyclable, so switch to more eco-friendly options like:
Fabric Wraps (Furoshiki style) using scarves or handkerchiefs
Newspaper with Twine and Leaves for a rustic look
Brown Kraft Paper decorated with stamps or markers
Glass Jars or Tins for edible gifts or bath products
Baskets or Wooden Boxes that can be reused around the home
Get creative! These small details can make your gift feel extra personal and eco-chic.
Experience-Based Gifts: Sustainable and Memorable
Sometimes the best gifts aren’t objects at all. Experience-based gifts not only create lasting memories, they often carry a much smaller environmental footprint.
Here are a few ideas:
Workshop Vouchers (pottery, painting, or organic cooking classes)
Nature Walks or Hikes with a curated picnic
Zero-Waste Cooking Lessons
Farm-to-Table Dinner Dates
Adopt-an-Animal or Tree Planting Donations in their name
These experiences are perfect for couples, families, or close friends who value quality time and shared learning.
Final Thoughts
Choosing eco-conscious gifts is more than a trend—it’s a lifestyle rooted in love, awareness, and creativity. Whether you’re surprising a partner with romantic gifts that have a sustainable edge or celebrating a milestone with handcrafted eco-friendly gifts, your efforts make a difference—not just to the recipient, but to the planet.
So this year, let your celebrations reflect not only your affection but also your values. Gifting green doesn’t just feel good—it does good.

It started with a crochet hook for me That turned into two hooks because i wanted to make something that didn't match the hook size I had. That turned into a whole set of hooks. Then I picked up weaving because I jumped down one too many Pinterest rabbit holes Then macrame because I saw some cool tassles and a hammock project I wanted to make (didnt finish the hammock but eh the idea is there) Then I picked up my first set of knitting needles, then a whole kit because I was making more projects in more sizes than one set of needles can do. I have a large in-person community and multiple online communities all because 6th grade me got interested in the moms making blankets with hooks that looked like the tools that Ancient Egyptian priests used to pull the brains of mummies with.

Top DIY Crafts for Budget-Friendly Home Decoration
Home decoration doesn't have to break the bank. With a little creativity and some handy materials, you can transform your living space into a cozy haven. Whether you're looking to add a pop of color to your walls or infuse some personal charm into your furniture, DIY crafts are the way to go. In this blog, we’ll explore some fantastic DIY crafts that are perfect for budget-friendly home decoration. From creating beautiful wall hanging crafts to finding unique wall decor ideas, you’ll discover how easy and fun it is to personalize your space. Let’s dive in!
1. Why Choose DIY Crafts for Home Decoration?
Before we jump into the crafts themselves, let’s talk about why DIY is such a great choice for home decor. DIY crafts allow you to unleash your creativity and create something truly one-of-a-kind for your home. Not only that, but they’re also cost-effective. Instead of splurging on expensive home decor items, you can make your own decorations at a fraction of the price.
2. Choosing the Right Materials for DIY Crafts
To get started with DIY crafts, you don’t need a fancy craft store. In fact, some of the best materials for your projects might be things you already have around the house. Think of old magazines, fabric scraps, mason jars, and even pieces of wood. Repurposing these items is a great way to create stunning decorations without spending much money. You can even find materials online or through local thrift stores to save even more!
3. Wall Hanging Crafts: Add Charm to Any Room
When it comes to affordable and impactful home decor, wall hanging crafts are an absolute must. These pieces can be made from a variety of materials and designs, giving you endless possibilities for customization. Whether you’re working with yarn, rope, or even natural elements like driftwood, a well-crafted wall hanging decor can instantly elevate any room.
Tip: Consider using a macrame technique to create a boho-inspired wall hanging for your living room or bedroom wall decor. You can find affordable macrame kits online or purchase cords from your local craft store.
4. Create Statement Pieces with Antique Home Decor
Do you love vintage vibes? Creating your own antique home decor pieces is an easy way to add personality to your space while keeping things on budget. You can repurpose old furniture, such as tables or chairs, and give them a distressed look with a little sanding and paint. You can also find antique-inspired items at local flea markets or online, such as thrift shops on e-commerce platforms like dbeautify.com or mystore.
5. Bedroom Wall Decor: Crafting Your Own Art Pieces
Your bedroom is your sanctuary, and the wall decor should reflect your style. Instead of purchasing expensive framed prints, try making your own unique wall decor items online. You can create a gallery wall with framed photographs, illustrations, or even your own paintings. For a more personalized touch, why not make a custom painting or collage that speaks to your personal experiences?
DIY Tip: Use textured materials such as fabric, felt, or even paper cutouts to give your artwork depth and character. These materials can be easily found and often cost very little.
6. Unique Wall Decor Ideas for a Personalized Touch
If you’re looking for unique wall decor ideas, DIY crafts are the perfect solution. Instead of purchasing mass-produced pieces, create your own decorations to ensure they reflect your taste. Consider designing abstract art using inexpensive canvas and acrylic paints, or get creative with a wall hanging craft that incorporates your favorite colors.
Idea: Repurpose wooden pallets or branches to create a rustic wall hanging. By adding small trinkets, fairy lights, or dried flowers, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind piece that speaks to your style.
7. Decorative Items to Spruce Up Your Home
DIY doesn’t always mean big projects – sometimes, small decorative items can make a huge difference. For example, you can make your own scented candles, vases, or even decorative trays to place around the house. These small additions can brighten up a room and give it a cozy, welcoming feel.
Idea: Fill a mason jar with decorative stones, dried flowers, and a candle to create an elegant centerpiece. It’s inexpensive, simple to make, and adds warmth to any space.
8. Upcycling: Turn Old Items into New Decor
One of the best things about DIY crafts is upcycling. You can transform old, unused items into gorgeous pieces of wall decor or furniture. For example, old picture frames can be repainted and turned into decorative mirrors or a hanging photo display. Wooden crates can be stacked and painted to create stylish shelves. The possibilities are endless when you think outside the box.
9. DIY Craft Ideas for Your Living Room
The living room is often the heart of the home, and it’s important that it feels both stylish and inviting. A simple wall hanging craft or custom throw pillow can instantly change the vibe of your space. You can also try creating your own rug or coffee table centerpiece to bring some unique personality into the room.
DIY Tip: Try making your own custom curtains using inexpensive fabric. This will give your living room a personalized touch without the high cost of ready-made curtains.
10. Creative Storage Solutions for Home Decor
Home decor is about more than just aesthetics – it’s also about functionality. DIY crafts can help you create creative storage solutions that are both beautiful and practical. For example, a rustic wooden shelf can hold decorative items while also providing storage for books or knick-knacks. Or, you could repurpose baskets into stylish storage containers that add charm to your decor.
11. Repurpose Old Furniture for a New Look
Instead of buying new furniture, why not give your old pieces a fresh makeover? With a little paint, new hardware, or reupholstery, your old chairs, tables, or dressers can look brand new. This is an excellent way to save money and create a custom look that fits your style.
Idea: Turn an old dresser into a chic TV stand or repurpose a vintage chair with bright, bold fabric to make it pop in your space.
12. DIY Craft Projects for Kids’ Rooms
If you have little ones, DIY crafts are a fun and affordable way to decorate their rooms. You can create their own unique wall decor with their favorite characters, colors, or themes. A fun idea might be to make hand-painted wooden letters that spell out their name, or create a set of wall hanging decor featuring animals or flowers.
13. Eco-Friendly Crafts for Sustainable Home Decor
For those looking to be more environmentally conscious, DIY crafts can also be eco-friendly. You can upcycle materials such as cardboard, glass jars, and fabric scraps to create beautiful home decor that’s sustainable. Plus, it’s a great way to reduce waste while also adding character to your home.
14. How to Shop for DIY Craft Supplies Online
Looking for DIY supplies? Shopping online is a great way to find affordable materials for your crafts. Websites like dbeautify.com and mystore offer a variety of craft supplies that you can use to bring your ideas to life. Look for discounts and bundle deals to save even more!
15. Conclusion: Make Your Home Your Own with DIY Crafts
Incorporating DIY crafts into your home decor is a fun, affordable way to personalize your space. Whether you’re adding wall hanging crafts, creating unique wall decor, or upcycling old furniture, there are countless ways to make your home truly yours without breaking the bank. With a little creativity and some basic supplies, you can turn any room into a beautiful, inviting space that reflects your personal style.

This is my set up for my plants, I have my stand that came from Walmart(link below) where I have some of my babies on there. I go into more detail about my plants on my stand in further posts.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/350504512?sid=d17b8863-93d7-41d3-b342-b77a771b2468
The hanging plants which is macrame hanger which came from Amazon. I do not have the link for those, but they have a bunch of cool ones on there. You can also buy kits and do you own. (Which I will make a short one about how macrame and I did together)
Tumblr media
This is a closer look at my stand. I tried different things for a stand, one major fail was trying to put plants that were on the heavier side on a shoe rack and hang them up. The middle started caving in(let me add, that it was plastic and cheap metal things) I was so worried about my almost 2 year old getting to them that I hung them. The thing is though he actually leaves them alone quite well. I must say I am proud of him.
I have my plants where they get some sunshine from the West(which is when the sun rises for us) and then southwest(the sun sets there)
Where I live it’s quite cold, so I have a heater on all the time(because this apartment is not the best with holding in heat) and our floorboard heater. It seems to be warm enough thankfully, I was a little worried come winter time. I mean, I know it’s the not the best set up but I am working with what I have…which isn’t a lot having kids and you know being an adult.
💦 will be touched in on another post in the future, I want to go into more detail about the seasons and how much to water and how to water. Though some of you will have different seasons.
Most of my other stuff was either free from Facebook groups or market place, or traded with someone through my Facebook group.
I may be new at this, but I am determined to have a kitchen greenhouse. (Sh, don’t tell my husband)
Coming next Friday, my failed attempt with raising airplants and what I learned going further.
