Sridevi: Remembering the Iconic Bollywood Actress
Tumblr media
Sridevi, an epitome of grace, talent, and beauty, remains one of the most celebrated and beloved actresses in the history of Indian cinema. Born on August 13, 1963, in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, she began her acting career at a young age and soon became a prominent figure in the Indian film industry. Her journey in the film world started as a child artist, and she made her debut in lead roles with the Tamil film "Moondru Mudichu" in 1976. Her natural acting prowess and charismatic screen presence quickly garnered attention, leading to roles in various Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam films. However, it was her foray into Bollywood that catapulted Sridevi to superstardom. Her performance in the 1983 film "Himmatwala" opposite Jeetendra marked her Bollywood debut and initiated her journey towards becoming an iconic figure in Indian cinema. The success of the film established her as a bankable leading lady and paved the way for her subsequent blockbuster films. Sridevi's ability to seamlessly transition between various genres and portray diverse characters set her apart. From romantic dramas like "Chandni" to intense roles in films like "Sadma," she showcased her versatility and left an indelible impact on the audience. Her pairing with leading actors of the time, including Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor, resulted in several memorable on-screen moments. The '80s and '90s were dominated by Sridevi's performances that left a lasting impression. She charmed audiences with her comic timing in films like "Mr. India" and "ChaalBaaz." Her dance moves, especially in the iconic song "Hawa Hawai," became a cultural phenomenon and added to her immense popularity. Sridevi's contributions to Indian cinema were not limited to Hindi films. She continued to excel in regional cinema, garnering critical acclaim for her roles in Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam movies. Her dedication to her craft and her ability to connect with audiences across language barriers solidified her status as a pan-Indian star. After a brief hiatus, Sridevi made a triumphant return to the silver screen with the critically acclaimed film "English Vinglish" in 2012. Her portrayal of a middle-aged woman's journey of self-discovery resonated with audiences and critics alike, reaffirming her unparalleled acting prowess. Tragically, Sridevi's life was cut short when she passed away on February 24, 2018, leaving behind a legacy that continues to shine brightly. Her sudden demise was met with shock and grief from fans, fellow actors, and the entire film fraternity. Sridevi's impact on Bollywood and the larger entertainment industry remains unmatched. Her body of work, spanning over four decades, showcases her ability to embody a wide range of characters and emotions. She received numerous awards for her contributions, including several Filmfare Awards, and was posthumously honored with the National Film Award for Best Actress for her role in "Mom." As fans and admirers remember Sridevi, her films, songs, and memorable moments continue to be cherished. Her legacy serves as an inspiration for aspiring actors and artists, reminding us of her extraordinary journey from a child artist to an eternal screen legend. Read the full article

Hi! You probably get this a lot but your art style is so perfect, I admire your lines and coloring so much! I noticed that deeper in your tumblr you used a distinctively different art style which also caught my eye — is there a specific reason you changed it? Also, there’s something about your username that’s really cool, is there a meaning behind it or anything? You don’t have to share if it’s personal or something, just wanna learn more about the artist behind this gorgeous art :)
Thank you! I used to do more realistic stuff, but stylized/comic art always caught my eye a lot more and it feels way more natural for me to draw. If you have to force yourself to draw a certain way or overthink it then it’s probably not the right path for you
My user name is the Malayalam word for rain rearranged (mazha) mixed in with some letters of my rl name. I’m actually more of a blue skies/bright sun person but the feeling of reading/drawing inside while it’s raining is great

Music Review
Public Rating Average: 5.1 / 10 (rated by 411 viewers)
sar•casm (sär k z m) - n. 1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to mock or insult. 2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of hyperbole and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule. E39 bmw rear suspension.
2003 is shaping up to become one of the greatest years the Indian film industry has ever seen. Release after release this year has raised the quality bar in Bollywood to dizzying heights. Certainly it’s hard to imagine films better than recent contemporary classics such as “Chura Liya Hai Tumne” or “Love At Times Square,” but audiences are in for a pleasant surprise with Anandi Art Creations’ latest offering. Aptly titled “Yeh Dil,” the film stars a stalwart Tusshar Kapoor opposite a sensational Natasha (who was recently seen in the who-done-it
'Kucch To Hai') in one of the most inventive and well-written love stories ever committed to celluloid.
Yeh Dil’s storyline deserves plaudits for attempting a theme that has seldom been seen before in Bollywood films. The originality and inspiration behind the situations and characters in the film are simply superb. Ravi (Tusshar Kapoor) is a rich sportsman at his college, where Vasundhara (Natasha) is a poor but studious girl. The two are diametric opposites in terms of personality, but realize that they are soul-mates and decide they must get married.
In a completely unexpected twist, however, Ravi’s multi-millionaire father and Vasundhara’s milkmaid father do not think the two should get married. Accordingly, they hatch intricate plots to make sure the lovers cannot unite. The suspense filled, breathtaking, and heart-wrenching drama that ensues determines whether or not Ravi and Natasha’s true love can overcome the opposition of their family members.
The plot’s innovativeness never lets up. The parents, looking out for the well-being of their children, don´t hesitate to go to any lengths to make sure their children never unite. The parents have a dark, violent, and unpredictable nature that has never been explored before in Indian films; they even try tactics like kidnapping their own children and forcing them to marry other people. The hard-hitting, Scorsese-esque violence towards the end of the film merits a special mention as-well - it really enhances the intensity of this already gripping romantic drama.
Of course in a film featuring leads in the caliber of Tusshar Kapoor and Natasha, performances are bound to be top-notch. Tusshar Kapoor delivers on the immense promise he has shown in earlier films, and delivers a carefully calculated and nuanced performance one would ordinarily expect only from a veteran actor. The manner in which he overreacts almost identically to love, hate, and violence really helps to create a sense of consistency and permanence that is simply not present in the work of Kapoor’s contemporaries like Vivek Oberoi. While Sonu Nigam in “Kash Aap Hamare Hote,” still ranks as the most emotional performance by a younger star this year, Tusshar Kapoor comes dangerously close to dethroning Mr. Nigam with his tour de force work in this film.
Natasha complements Tusshar on every level. The chemistry and comfort the lead couple share on screen in as delightful to watch in this film as it was earlier in the thriller “Kucch To Hai.” Natasha is not quite as dramatic as Tusshar, but her restraint is excusable. The character artists who enact the roles of family members are not short of award-worthy.
Yeh Dil 2003 Full Movie Download
The drama and suspense is handled masterfully by director Teja. Not since Hitchcock has someone married intense romance and thrilling suspense with so much success. The editing is likewise excellent. The background music and the soundtrack by Nadeem-Shravan is cutting-edge. It marries the modern feel of a 80´s synthesizer with classic Indian beats to create music that strikes the rare perfect balance between experimentation and appeal. Cinematography is on an international standard. The dance numbers – ravishing cinematic spectacles, all of them - are flawlessly choreographed and brought to life by the unbelievable skill and dexterity of the leads. Even recent Hollywood benchmarks in the musical genre pale in comparison.
Yeh Dil (2003)
“Yeh Dil” is an incredible cinematic journey. Part allegory on class-warfare, part intense love story, there are few more meaningful or more entertaining ways to spend three hours. True, sometimes the director strays so far from Bollywood convention it seems disorienting, but this complete disregard for convention only improves the film in the long run. A 'must see' in every sense of the phrase.
Yeh Dil 2003

Wishing Shakti Kapoor many happy returns of the day.
Shakti Kapoor (born as Sunil Sikanderlal Kapoor on 3 September 1958 ) is an actor who appears in Bollywood films. Known for his villainous and comic roles in Hindi films, he has featured in more than 700 films throughout his career. In the 1980s and 1990s, Kapoor teamed up with actor Kader Khan as the comical or evil duo in over 100 films. He was a contestant in the Indian reality show Bigg Boss.
As a struggler in Bollywood, initially Shakti Kapoor did many inconsequential roles in movies, all the while looking out for a suitable role as a leading man. The years 1980–81 established Shakti Kapoor as an actor in Bollywood with two of his movies Qurbani and Rocky. In 1983, Kapoor had roles in Himmatwala and the Subhash Ghai directed movie Hero. Kapoor had played villain roles in both these movies. In the nineties, he often diversified to positive comic roles and performed them with equal finesse. He has been nominated for the Filmfare Award in the Best Comedian category and won once, for his performance as Nandu in David Dhawan's film, Raja Babu. Some of his comic roles have been as Inspector Bhinde in Insaaf, Prasad in Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numbri, Crime Master Gogo in Andaz Apna Apna, Tohfa, as Batuknath in ChaalBaaz and as Goonga in Bol Radha Bol.
Kapoor has been a reference for mimicry artistes who emulate his style and dialogues such as "Aaaooo Lolita" from the movie Tohfa, "Main Nanha sa Chotta sa Bachcha Hoon" from the movie Chaalbaaz and "Nandu sabka bandhu, samajhta nahi hai yaar" from the movie Raja Babu. Since 2000, Kapoor is a regular fixture in Priyadarshan films like Hungama, Hulchul, Chup Chup Ke, Malamaal Weekly and the Malayalam remake Bhagam Bhag. He also acted in a few Bengali films of Kolkata, Odia film and in an Assamese feature film. In 2011, he was in the reality television show Bigg Boss 5 as one of the contestants. He has appeared in the musical comedy Aasman Se Gire Khajoor Pe Atke[8] with his sister-in-law Padmini Kolhapure. He is also the brand ambassador of Servokon.

Manager’s Special by Tom Darin Liskey
The incense wafts in thick coils, creating ghost-like apparitions that drift in the penumbra of this makeshift tabernacle that once served as a barn in southeast Texas.
From the window next to me, I catch the sudden flash of spreading peacock feathers. The bird is perched on a fence post outside this place where members of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church have gathered to worship.
I’m here for a narrative photo project exploring faith after the metropolitan (bishop) gave me permission to photograph the early Saturday mass. These devotees proudly trace their spiritual roots all the way back to St. Thomas, the former resurrection skeptic who eventually brought the gospel to the sub-continent over two thousand years ago. These orthodox Indians, in turn, have brought their exotic liturgy to the American bible-belt where church malls and the franchise mentality sometimes dominate the religious landscape of today.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
This is also a traditional congregation. Church members peel off their sandals and dress shoes, leaving them by the door. The women wear bright saris with headscarves. I even spot a couple of church members clad in shalwar kameezes, pantaloons with long tunics. The celebrants worship in the sanctuary barefoot because this is a sacred place. Lost to the majesty of it all, the younger children wiggle in their parents’ arms.
We’ve come to the part of the mass where celebrants greet each other. The resonance of Malayalam prayers and rattling cymbals linger in the air. From the front of the church, a young girl breaks away from her mother. I can see her approaching me at the back of the church. Her hands are pressed together as if in prayer. The veil covering her dark hair flutters like a patch of blue sky in the shadows. She can’t be more than twelve.
When she stands before me, she raises her fingertips and bows her head.
“She is offering you a ‘kiss of peace,’” the man next to me says.
But I am not part of her devotion. Heck, I’m not even one of those Good Christian Soldiers people used to sing about in church when I was a child.
I am a believer, but I am also straggler, limping on the road with all of God’s other walking wounded. The camera lens is my stained-glass window.
“This is our greeting,” the man adds. He presses his hands together and nods for me to do the same. I clumsily return the girl’s sudden act of kindness, this welcoming gesture for the stranger in their midst. And in that one moment my orphan heart, grief-worn and dirty with doubt, sees the face of God.
***
What drove me to this secondhand church began with a deep funk that began a year ago.
I had just come off a bad sickness. I woke up one morning, swung my feet from the bed to the floor and froze. It felt like all the air was sucked out of the room. Just like that. Then it descended. The invisible weight of a pitch-black depression.
I’ll be honest, I have struggled with depression for most of my life. There had been ebbs and flows over the years, but this latest episode just crushed me. If you talk to people who know me, they’ll tell you I can be the life of the party. I could have been a comic. The thing is, I’ve learned to be as functional as I can be without falling apart. But this last episode was brutal.
I use the story about the Indian girl at church because her simple act of kindness touched me at a very dark moment in my life. I know that sounds melodramatic, but you can lose friends when depression strikes. I had one person ask me why I didn’t “reach out” during the worst of it. My response was how do “you reach out” when you’re hanging on by your fingernails?
Photography, and listening to other people’s stories, was a doorway out of the darkness. Every act of kindness, every tiny morsel offered to me, tasted as sumptuous as a feast in the wilderness.
That Indian congregation, where the girl in blue greeted me, asked me to break bread with them in a traditional meal after mass. I felt love that day. Later on, a tiny Jewish congregation in remote Suriname offered me bread and salt after their Sabbath service. I wept on my way back to my hotel, the taste of salt on my lips. Three Afro-Guyanese young girls posed for me as the afternoon sun poured through the tall stain-glass windows of an old church in Georgetown, giving me a deeply private revelation. These moments were—and remain—very important to me.
I took some of these pictures in Mexico City, London, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia, and the Welsh-speaking hinterland of Wales. Each photo has its own narrative. I hope you find some beauty in them.

Vivek Anand Oberoi in a still from PM Narendra Modi
This week’s new Bollywood release, director Omung Kumar B’s PM Narendra Modi, is not a biography. It is an unwittingly farcical, comical hagiography of Narendra Modi and the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), and even that is a euphemistic description. To put it simply, this is a highly fictionalised account of the present Indian prime minister’s life.
Omung Kumar’s recall value so far has come from the vastly superior Priyanka Chopra-starrer Mary Kom (2014) and the embarrassingly bad Aishwarya Rai Bachchan-starrer Sarbjit (2016). PM Narendra Modi falls into the so-bad-it-could-be-fun category, except that it is not fun at all – it is, instead, an insult to viewer intelligence and viewer knowledge. "Modi ek insaan nahin, ek soch hai (Modi is not a person, Modi is a way of thinking/a concept),” says the protagonist himself at one point. Aur Modi ke baare mein soch badalne ke liye, to change the thinking about Modi, the screenplay – co-written by Anirudh Chawla and the leading man, Vivek Anand Oberoi – runs facts through a carefully chosen sieve and presents a new, rewritten history so far removed from recorded reality, that it bears little resemblance to the actual Modi. In that sense, PM Narendra Modi reminded me of a scene in last year’s Malayalam feature Kammara Sambhavam, in which the hero watches a PR film about his life and does not recognise himself on screen. Things that did not happen in Modi’s life are in this film shown to have happened: he is shown being arrested during the Emergency, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is shown praising him to the press during the 2002 riots, in the run-up to the 2014 election Modi is shown volunteering to do a live interview with a hostile TV journalist before an audience and acing it. In the face of such liberties with facts involving major historical events, all PM Narendra Modi’s other follies and flaws – the word “grateful” being spelt as “greatful” in the opening acknowledgements, the lazy caricature of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Modi’s corrupt government colleague in Gujarat, the false suggestion that Modi never married, other monumental exaggerations and misrepresentations in the screenplay, Hitesh Modak’s overbearing background score and the overall tackiness of the narrative – pale into insignificance. It is worth mentioning here that the aforementioned hostile journalist is a stooge of a corrupt industrialist called Aditya Reddy, played by Prashant Narayanan. Three enemies are very clearly marked out by PM Narendra Modi: Pakistan, the news media and, through the medium of the Reddy character, the dark-skinned self-serving south Indian. On Vivek Oberoi’s shoulders falls the task of playing this larger-than-life version of Modi, determined to vanquish all three. Most of Oberoi’s co-stars are comparatively irrelevant because their roles are dwarfed by his, but despite being dealt the same hand, their performances are a mixed bag. Manoj Joshi looks oddly wimpish as Amit Shah (the BJP chief’s full name is muted out in the film for some reason), but Boman Irani brings some dignity to the role of Ratan Tata as does Zarina Wahab playing Modi’s mother. In an ocean of mediocrity, Anjan Shrivastav does a reasonably good take on Vajpayee without resorting to gimmicky mimicry. As for Oberoi, well, in the actor who hams his way through this role, there is no trace of the young debutant who showed such spark under Ram Gopal Varma’s guidance in 2002’s Company. It is sad to watch an artist lose his touch. For those of us who saw something in him in Company, the only consolation is that his turn as Modi is less cringe-worthy than his performance as a horny young chap in Masti (2004), Grand Masti (2013) and Great Grand Masti (2016). If you think about it, despite the apparent contrast between them, the Masti trilogy and PM Narendra Modi both offer conventionally accepted definitions of masculinity. The Mastis used slapstick comedy as a vehicle to present us with men driven by their nether regions and their hormones as men naturally would be, or so we are given to understand. In PM Narendra Modi, the hero espouses an earnest, asexual, aggressive machoism, initially speaking of wanting to renounce the world and follow the path taken by Lord Buddha, and in the climatic moments ascribing his decisiveness – as the real life Narendra Modi has done – to a 56-inch chest. You see, his political journey is not a consequence of personal ambition, it is the answer to the public’s prayerful longing for “ek sachcha mard (a real man)” to lead them, to quote the words of a character early in the film.

Beyond Bollywood: where India’s biggest movie hits really come from
The global success of fantasy epic Baahubali 2: The Conclusion underscores the power of the countrys billion-dollar regional film industry
The global success of SS Rajamoulis fantasy epic sequel Baahubali 2: The Conclusion has once again brought Indian cinema to the attention of the world. Its forerunner, the $31m-budgeted Baahubali: The Beginning (2015), grossed $100m worldwide but caused little more than a ripple outside India. Within the country, it made waves because the film, made in the south Indian Telugu and Tamil languages, saw the Hindi-dubbed version alone gross more than $20m.
It is a common misconception that the Hindi-language, Mumbai-based film industry known as Bollywood is Indias national cinema. The numbers tell a different story. India produces an astonishing 1,900 films a year on average, of which Hindi-language Bollywood accounts for about 340. The bulk of the rest comes from the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi and Gujarati languages. Domestic box office has remained stagnant at about $1.5bn and, while Bollywood might produce more films (Tamil had 291, Telugu 275, and Kannada 204 films in 2016), it contributes just a third of the box office gross. In short, Bollywood has the visibility, but not the profits, with the under-performers far outweighing the hits.
In this context, the numbers racked up by the regional Baahubali 2 budgeted at $39m, made in Telugu and Tamil, with Hindi and Malayalam dubbed versions are astonishing by Indian standards. The film opened on 28 April and grossed $194m in 13 days, making it the highest Indian grosser of all time and putting it on track to become the first Indian film to gross $200m. It easily outperformed the $123m collected by PK (2014), starring Bollywood icon Aamir Khan.
Baahubali 2 consolidated this performance by delivering an extraordinary result in the US, opening in third position at the box office, above The Circle starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson. With $17m and counting, it is the highest grossing Indian film of all time in North America.
Baahubali 2 has the perfect blend of action, emotion and all the right ingredients that a moviegoer wants, says Soma Kancherla, of the films US distributors Great India Films. Baahubali 1s success and the curiosity factor had created a huge hype. The conclusion had lived up to the expectations.
Female empowerment saga Parched, directed by Leena Yadav. Photograph: Brisbane Asia and Pacific Film Festival
Has the film broken out beyond Indian diaspora audiences to a broader audience? Yes, says Kancherla. We factored some of that into our promotion and targeted non-Indians, and to some extent it worked. We have seen many Americans in the theatres who watched and appreciated the film.
The film also collected $2.3m across 66 Imax screens around the world in its opening weekend. This included $1.8m from 45 Imax locations in North America, making it the highest ever opening in the format for a foreign language film.
In the UK, rather than the consolidated figure of the various versions charting as in North America, fragmented versions were listed, with the Hindi version bowing in sixth position, the Tamil one in ninth and the Malayalam and Telugu versions lower in the Top 20.
Creating and maintaining anticipation for the larger-than-life saga of warring cousins and fiery queens was a carefully calibrated task for producer Shobu Yarlagaddaof Arka Mediaworks, the company behind the films. As we started preproduction on the film, we knew that for the kind of efforts we were planning to put into the project, financial and otherwise, it would be sad if we didnt at least attempt to go beyond our regional strongholds, says Yarlagadda.
Global hit Dangal has taken $143m worldwide. Photograph: Disney
Getting a wide release in the south Indian language markets of Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam was simple enough as director Rajamouli is a brand name there, with hits such as Eega and Magadheera behind him. For north India and the international markets, Arka promoted the project on social media platforms, as well as attending comic-cons and university festivals.
The so-called traditional market for Indian films is a block of 50 territories with the biggest being the US, the UAE, the UK, Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Indias south Asian neighbours, Australia and New Zealand, and North Africa, with some pockets in France, Germany and Switzerland. Elsewhere, Indian films were popular in Russia and China in the 1950s, particularly actor/film-maker Raj Kapoors blockbuster Awara, while dancing action star Mithun Chakraborty enjoyed fame there with his 1982 film Disco Dancer. However, of late, Indian studio majors have been striking out into non-traditional territories with dubbed or subtitled versions of films: Ki & Ka was released in territories as diverse as Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe and Gibraltar; Bajrangi Bhaijaan in Morocco, Tunisia and Poland; and Mary Kom in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, and Kyrgyzstan.
Indian producers have utilised every trick in the book to reach overseas audiences. Arka hired Franois Da Silva, former artistic director of Cannes directors fortnight, to sell and market the film internationally. Non-Indian behind-the-camera talent is increasingly common. Leena Yadavs female empowerment saga Parched, in Hindi, boasts Titanic cinematographer Russell Carpenter and The Descendants editor Kevin Tent.
Accessible English-language titles are also on the rise. Pan Nalins Angry Indian Goddesses, billed as Indias first female buddy movie, sold to 61 territories internationally. Nalin says: Based on my past movies and gaining some experience with international distribution one thing I realised is that its not enough to just have a great movie. We also need a great title which is universally appealing. Titling it in English has paid off. Across the world, the moment we utter or read Angry Indian Goddesses it puts a smile on faces.
All the major Hollywood films are released in English and in Hindi, Telugu and Tamil dubs, demonstrating that India loves global tentpoles, provided they speak in their own tongues. (Appropriately, the highest grossing Hollywood film in India is the India-set The Jungle Book, which roared to $28m in 2016.) Nevertheless, the dominance being enjoyed by Baahubali 2 could be under threat. Wrestling drama Dangal has taken $143m at the global box office, while fans of Baahubalis spectacle will be waiting for the big-budget adaptations of epic story cycles The Ramayana and The Mahabharata, which are in the works. Its fair to say that, with Hollywood accounting for just 10% of the local box office, the Indian film industry continues to enjoy rude good health.
