Superlinguo 2022 in review

At the start of 2022 it was my aim to move gently through this year, after the general global upheaval the pandemic brought, and settling back into work after parental leave. I mostly think managed that for myself, and things worth sharing still happened this year.

Lingthusiasm

Lingthusiasm turned 6 this year. As well as regular episodes and bonus episodes every month, this year we ran a special offer for patrons and did a one-off print run of lens cloths with our redesigned aesthetic IPA.

This year we ran another round of LingComm Grants, and we’ve been enjoying seeing new linguistic communication projects come to life. The year ahead

I will be on parental leave in 2023 🎉

Last time I went on leave with a newborn I had no idea if I would have a job to return to. I’m very grateful to not have that stress hanging over me this time around. Lingthusiasm will continue as regularly scheduled. It will be interesting to see how things here go without the monthly job interview posts. I’ll still have new publications, and various linguistics resources and observations to share, if maybe on a less than weekly basis. With Jared gone in LA and cooking for his life, Jensen is stuck back on the East Coast with more distance between them than ever. It’s also the first time Jensen really acknowledges why he has such a soft spot for the kid and finally realizes what they could mean to one another.

my general thoughts during black adam 2022 tht swirled in my mind like a flushing toilet. in no order

writers room and maybe mr johnson himself actually ironed out geoff’s adam origin and made him nicer because he literally murdered his nephew in that one. this works tho for what they were going for so okieee . will we get adam choking out the shazam kids in movie 2 LOL the rock would never agree to tht. wat happened to the anti in antihero mister…

kinda moe they made atom smasher n adam have bestie potential like in jsa lol.

it genuinely felt like a shift of two movies going back and forth between khandaq and hawkmans cruiser which I guess u could say makes it immersive

the entire jsa dynamic was so so good simply bc the chars were so fleshed out even in the small lines al and maxine (I LOVE U MAXINEEEE!!!) had they felt like heroes who’d worked together for so long. like it was easy breezy n if u compare that to the billion of quips and tension jl in the movie had like. it’s kind of wild. centering dc movieverse on jsa was not on my bingo. Predicitions on how This is Us will end:

- Rebecca will die

- Toby might remarry

- Jack will guide Rebecca to heaven and she will say his name before passing

- Malik and Deja will break up due to Randall’s words which will end in a big fight, but she’ll eventually understand it’s for her own good

- Kevin will finally be happy and hopefully will find love

- We’ll see more of older Jack Damon

- Kate will possibly consider another child with her new spouse

- We’ll see the entire cast in one long shot of the characters through the years

- Possible Uncle Nicky wedding scene

- Sophie will probably show up again towards the finale

Even Beth telling Annie the reason she shouldn’t be allowed to view it...is just an illustration of how good the show is with set-ups and punchlines. They really were able to get a lot of mileage of laughs possible with this one.

(I didn’t even notice until rewatching the scenes that BETH and ANNIE turn at the same time when DEJA completes the message)

PS: And how about Annie talking like characters from classic novels? I didn’t realise that would be a result of watching Gerta’s version of ‘Little Women’.

PPS: You know what just hit me? That the humour is more focused on Middle Aged Kevin, Kate, and Randall. Maybe it’s just me? I don’t mind that they get the bulk of the laughter....it probably is just coincidence.

RANDALL's happily folding the shirt he took off. His back to us....singing---

RANDALL First you fold the left...

Some right shoulder action---

RANDALL Then you fold the right. Bring the hem to the shoulder. And press it tight.

He does as the song says and throws in some subtle dancing.

RANDALL Press it tight, mm, yeah.

He moves to remove his watch.

INT. BETH AND RANDALL'S HOUSE (KITCHEN) - CONTINUOUS

TESS throws up her hand.

TESS He's not answering!

DEJA Of course he can't see his phone..

They helplessly watch RANDALL go through his 'changing clothes' motions. Apparently this is now the step where he does a cross of 'Getting Jiggy With It' and 'Single Ladies'.

DEJA ...he's too busy dancing.

BETH Mm-mm, girl, that's not dancing.

RANDALL leans back and moves his shoulders.

BETH I don't know what that is, but that is not dancing.

RANDALL continues doing his 'moves'. DEJA watches in horror.

ANNIE Mom, I want to watch.

BETH hurriedly hides the tablet behind her.

BETH Hey, hey, hey. Annie, you know what? There's some things you can't unsee, baby. And this is one of them, all right?
