he knows it hurts, love, when you need to move. but movement is crucial to recovery, and the leg raises are a safe start to the long, beautiful road ahead. you're so strong, and it's okay to cry- his shoulder exists to catch your tears. you're doing so well, and it's for your own good. one day, when you understand, he can find you a pretty new leg, and then- and then! then, it will be like none of this ever happened. you'll walk, you'll run, you'll go outside again, one day. together. happy, and together.
but first you need to be honest. with him, with yourself.
you love him, don't you? he knows you do. you just don't know how it feels to love and be loved in turn. he's learning to cook, just for you! your favourite meals, so you don't need to worry about making them yourself. that's love. the way he holds you, like you're something precious and fleeting that he can't ever let go of. the way he dresses your residual limb and peppers kisses across your knee and helps you through the physio he'd researched just for you, because while that piece of you is gone, he loves you all the more for it.
you don't know what it means to love. but you'll learn.
for your own sake, you'll learn.

The Microscope & the Scientific Revolution
The microscope was one of the most significant inventions of the Scientific Revolution, opening up completely new and miniaturised worlds. The first microscopes were invented in the first quarter of the 17th century in the Netherlands, but soon scientists across Europe were using the instrument to make new and often bewildering discoveries in the fields of botany, entomology, and anatomy.
The First Microscopes
The first optical microscopes appeared in the early 17th century, shortly after the invention of the telescope, which is generally credited to the Flemish spectacle-maker by Hans Lippershey (c. 1570 to c. 1619). A year or two later, Galileo (1564-1642) made a superior telescope, with which he observed the heavens in great detail, publishing his findings in Sidereus Nuncius (The Starry Messenger) in 1610. The microscope also originated in the Netherlands, its invention is usually credited to Cornelius Drebbel (1572-1635) or Hans Janssen. Like the telescope, the microscope used two lenses set in a hollow tube. Drebbel's model followed the telescope design not of Galileo, which had a concave and a convex lens, but of Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) who used two convex lenses in his instruments. Although in this latter arrangement, the image was inverted, it was also much clearer.
Soon there were specialist makers of microscopes, one highly respected manufacturer was John Marshall. A Marshall-designed compound microscope, which has three lenses (eyepiece, field lens, and objective lens) and the possibility to add extra light using a candle under the base, can be seen today in the Science Museum in London. One notable private maker was Antonie van Leeuwenhoek (see more below), who made over 500 microscopes, including examples that had an impressive magnification of 270 using a tiny glass bead instead of a larger glass lens. Further adaptations to improve the instrument were made, such as adding a small mirror to the base whose angle could be adjusted to direct more light to the specimen under view. The instrument maker Edward Culpeper (1670-1737) made this mirror concave, increasing the light made available in his microscopes. It was not enough to have an excellent instrument, though, preparing specimens for viewing was a skill in itself and could make the difference between gaining a new scientific discovery or seeing nothing at all.
Scientists soon put the new device to good use and began to investigate what had previously been indistinct or invisible to the naked eye. Anatomists, entomologists, and botanists were particularly keen to use this new invention to further their understanding of the natural world. In 1625, for example, Francesco Stelluti examined in detail the bodies of bees and published his research as The Apiarium, the first study based on microscopic science. Many other discoveries and academic papers soon followed, and by the second half of the 17th century, beautifully illustrated works were being published to reveal to interested readers exactly what could be seen through the latest microscopes. It now became clear that a tiny insect could be just as complex in its structure as a large mammal. The view through a microscope also raised some perplexing questions, such as if a parasitic flea itself has fleas, might not these fleas also have fleas and so on ad infinitum? The microscope had revealed new worlds, but where did they end? The invention seemed to pose more questions than the current technology could answer.

“before even getting into the computer-brain metaphors that have taken over in the last half century” omg PLEASE get into it (if u have the time and desire to)
this is not a new observation on my part by any means lol so this is really just going to be me treading ground that other people have covered much more eloquently and thoughtfully. but yeah it is quite noticeable in the last few decades how the way people talk about the brain is often borrowing directly from the terminology of computer science: think brains "processing" "information", "storing" memories, nerve impulses as a "transmission" of "signals", &c. this isn't inherently bad, but i'm cautious and sceptical about how useful this way of talking is because
often brain-computer metaphors are used to suggest, implicitly or not, that the computer simply is the 'highest' piece of technology there is or can be, and therefore tautologically must be how the brain works; this is pretty ahistorical. brain metaphors have historically drawn from many different technologies, usually whatever was seen as 'advanced' in the day—vacuum tubes, other communication technologies like telephone and telegraph transmissions, even musical instruments. none of this means the computer metaphor is inherently wrong but, it should give us pause before just assuming that this time, we've gotten it right
brains are actually like, more mysterious in their functioning than computers lol given that there are in fact people who know how to make and code and work with computers, and there are in fact no people who, like, know how brains produce consciousness. and i'm not opposed to metaphor in science communication but i'd argue the computer metaphors don't actually enhance clarity of communication for the most part, given that most people have no fucking idea how a computer works anyway—in these sorts of invocations it's just blackbox technology that gives a sheen of scientificity to a lot of very bad psy-science and neuroscience discourse
specifically this came up because that other person was talking about how brains "process information" in regards to watching tiktok videos or whatever, which is a perfect example of how this sort of obfuscates a lot of things we don't actually know about brains or thoughts or consciousness. like there's a very smooth narrative being produced here, based on the idea of the brain as a kind of calcified piece of technology that can be trained into bad habits or have its capacity for attention eroded or whatever—not only is this not really how computers work anyway (so again, not a very useful metaphor), it's also very reminiscent of the degeneracy theories of the past 2–3 centuries, only now expressed in language that scans as 'scientific' according to the standards of the day, where it's compsci that's in fashion over things like stock breeding (a favourite of the 19th century, for example)
so again i'm not saying, like, that it could never be useful to compare the human body or mind to a manufactured technology, or denying that nerve impulses are electrical phenomena (tho people have known this since the galvanic experiments of the renaissance, & yet the computer metaphors could only arise... after the corresponding computer technologies). but i think it would behoove us to think closely about what we're saying when we use these metaphors, whether the metaphors are useful, what sorts of things they convey and what things they obfuscate or muddle, &c.

Ability to intercept an SR-71: Victor Belenko states the Mig-25 cannot intercept the SR-71 for several reasons: The SR-71 fly too high and too fast; the Mig cannot reach it or catch it. The missiles lack the velocity to overtake the SR-71 and in the event of a head on missile fire (The Golden BB), the Guidance system cannot adjust to the high closure rate of the SR-71.
The Mig-25 has a jam proof radar but cannot distinguish targets below 1,640 feet due to ground clutter. The radar was so powerful it could burn through jamming signals by approaching bombers.
Upon dismantling the Mig-25, the data was analyzed by the Foreign Technology Division of the Air Force at Dayton, Ohio. There were many surprises:
 
1The Mig had been manufactured in February 1976 and thus was one of their latest most sophisticated production aircraft.
2Transistor circuitry was not used but instead the Soviets relied on vacuum tubes for most of their electronics. The Soviets reasoned the vacuum tubes were less affected by EMP waves in the case of nuclear attack; were more resistant to temperature extremes and they were easy to replace in remote airfields where transistors may not be readily available if repairs were needed.
3Welding was done by hand.
4Rivet heads were exposed in areas not critical to parasitic aerodynamic drag.
5Pilot forward vision was highly obstructed.
6With huge Tumansky R-15D-300 engines the Mig was considered almost a rocket.
7Pilots were forbidden to exceed Mach 2.5. There was a total of three engine instruments and the airspeed indicator was redlined at 2.8 Mach.
8Above Mach 2.8 the engines would overheat and burn up. The Americans had clocked a Mig-25 over Israel at Mach 3.2 in 1973. Upon landing in Egypt, the engines were totally destroyed. We did not understand that the engine destruction was inevitable.
9The combat radius is 186 miles.
10Without using afterburner; staying at optimum altitude and not maneuvering, the Mig can fly in a straight line for 744 miles.
11The plane was so heavy at 64,200 pounds, that according to early rumors Soviet designers had to eliminate a pilot ejection system. However this was disproved.  Most MiG-25s used the KM-1 ejector seat. The last versions used an early variant of the famous K-36 seat. The speed record for the fastest successful ejection (Mach 2.67) is held by a KM-1 equipped MiG-25.
12Maximum operational altitude: Carrying two missiles, 78,740 feet (for maximum two minutes duration); carrying four missiles, 68,900 feet is maximum.
13Maximum altitude of missiles: 88,588 feet.
14Maximum G load: With full fuel tanks 2.2 G's is max; with near empty fuel tanks, 5 G's is dangerous. The Mig-25 cannot turn inside a U.S. F-4 Phantom fighter!
15The plane was made of steel alloy, not high temperature titanium, although strips of titanium was used in areas of high heat concentration.
