Actually fucking huge kudos to Cory Booker for breaking the US senate speech record. This is a great “storytelling moment” for the Dems and they need all the ammo they can get

have you seen the new talamasca website? already seeing people gloat over the leaked louis file bc it describes him as ‘empathetic’ (‘still has understanding of human emotion’). which. look, firstly, this is just a marketing material that’s obviously not created by people involved in the making either show. but secondly — why is the talamasca a reliable source now lol. they know even less than we do! why are people taking it more seriously than the actual text on screen, or interviews with jacob, rolin etc? i mean, i know why, i just think it’s funny. and the thing is, i think louis has a ton of empathy for his loved ones, but it’s a canon part of his character that he struggles with how much he dgaf about humans lol. the insistence on making louis this mother teresa figure who cares so much about people is not only boring but just inaccurate
I have seen it! Honestly though, of the two little things that came down through the pipeline as I slept, I’ve been spending more time with all the costume photos Carol posted of Santiago and the Theatres des Vampires, haha.
But yes, as you said, that sort of thing is all written by a marketing assistant or an intern, so should he taken with a grain of salt, but at the same time, I don’t have an issue with them describing him as empathetic in the context of still understanding human emotions. I think he is, and he does, and he’s not as far removed from his humanity as some of the other vampires we’ve met and are about to meet.
He still understands his most important vampiric relationships as human dynamics - Claudia is his daughter, his relationships with Lestat (and I know there’s disagreement on this, but I personally think Louis does consider it this way) and Armand are marriages, Jacob’s already described Daniel as becoming a little brother to Louis - and it’s pointedly uncomfortable and confusing for Louis when these vampiric dynamics don’t match human ones, most notably with his dark spell after turning Madeleine.
I think he also has a deep understanding of human emotions still through his grief and his connection to art which is both personal and deeply feeling, and I think he also has a deep personal understanding of human emotions in no small part to weaponise them, haha. He certainly does against Daniel, Grace, Lestat and Armand.
I think that’s all a part of him, so the phrase itself doesn’t bother me, but if people are trying to associate with like, the TikTok toxic positivity trend of being an empath, that is pretty funny.

Leprosy In The Americas Predates European Contact, New Study Finds
Adapted From a News Release Courtesy of The Institut Pasteur
— 29 May, 2025 | By CSU MarComm Staff
Tumblr media
Preparation of a DNA Library in the Avanzi Lab
Leprosy has been present in the Americas for more than 1,000 years, long before the arrival of European settlers, according to a groundbreaking new finding published this week in the journal Science.
The major international study was co-led by scientists at Colorado State University and the Institut Pasteur in France, in collaboration with Indigenous communities and more than 40 scientists from institutions across the Americas and Europe. The study reframes the history of leprosy in the Americas and has implications for better understanding how infectious diseases spread, persist and evolve in human and animal populations over time.
“This study is a powerful example of how ancient and modern DNA can rewrite medical history and deepen our understanding of contemporary infectious diseases,” said Charlotte Avanzi, co-lead author and assistant professor at CSU, who led the analysis of modern clinical samples for the study. “We’re only just beginning to uncover the diversity and global movements of this recently discovered pathogen.”
Leprosy is a disease that affects thousands of people worldwide, with M. leprae being the most common species of leprosy-causing bacteria. Scientists have long thought that the disease was introduced to the Americas by European colonizers. This new study, however, shows that a lesser-known species of leprosy-causing bacteria, Mycobacterium lepromatosis, infected humans in the Americas centuries before European contact.
“This discovery changes how we understand the history of leprosy in the Americas,” said co-lead author Maria Lopopolo from Institut Pasteur. “It tells us that a form of the disease had been endemic among Indigenous populations long before European ships arrived.”
Extensive Screening
For this study, the team conducted the most extensive screening done for this pathogen, analyzing DNA from nearly 800 samples, including ancient skeletal remains from different regions and clinical samples from five countries: Mexico, the U.S., Brazil, Paraguay and French Guiana. The most positive cases were identified in Mexico and the U.S., which, according to the authors, likely reflects a combination of a higher prevalence of the pathogen in those regions as well as more intensive sampling in those countries.
Working in collaboration with Indigenous communities, the team recovered M. lepromatosis DNA from ancient human remains in Canada and Argentina that dated back over 1,000 years. Using a DNA sequencing method known as long-read sequencing, the team also generated the first high-quality, complete genome for the bacterium from a modern sample, a leprosy patient from Costa Rica — an essential step for mapping evolution and spread.
Despite being separated by over 10,000 kilometers, the infections from the Canadian and Argentinian remains fell within a relatively narrow time frame, and the corresponding strains were similar, suggesting the bacterium had spread widely across the continent in a few centuries. Whether this rapid dispersal was human-mediated, such as through networks of trade and contact, or animal-driven, remains an open question, the authors said.
“Our findings significantly alter the historical narrative of leprosy in the Americas,” said Nicolás Rascovan, a senior author from the Institut Pasteur. “This discovery not only reshapes our understanding of the pathogen’s origins but also raises the possibility that this pathogen may have been introduced in various geographic regions and highlights the complex interplay between human populations and pathogens over time.”
Tumblr media
Altering The Historical Narrative
The road to this discovery began in 2008 when M. Lepromatosis was first identified in a Patient in Mexico — an unexpected revelation at the time.
“It was hard for many in the field to accept that a second agent of leprosy had been hiding in plain sight,” said John Spencer, an associate professor at CSU who contributed to the original discovery of M. lepromatosis. “The idea that such a significant pathogen could go undetected for so long was deeply surprising.”
In 2015, the genome of M. lepromatosis was sequenced, which enabled scientists to develop molecular tools to detect the bacterium in human tissue. Despite this progress, confirmed data on the geographic distribution of M. lepromatosis remained sparse.
“Genome sequencing enabled the development of specific markers to detect Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Since then, numerous cases have been identified in Mexico, raising strong suspicion that North America may be the pathogen’s place of origin,” said co-author Lucio Vera-Cabrera, microbiologist and researcher at the Autonomous University of Nuevo León, Mexico. “However, until now, its true origin remained unclear.”
One of the study’s earlier breakthroughs came in 2016, when M. lepromatosis was unexpectedly found in red squirrels in the British Isles — the first confirmed animal reservoir of the pathogen, also reported in Science.
“At that time, we were puzzled,” Avanzi said. “We had detected the pathogen mostly in the Americas, and it was unclear how red squirrels in Europe had become infected.”
The new research builds on that finding and found five genetically distinct lineages of M. lepromatosis, including one lineage formed by the red squirrel strains. Analyses suggest that the strain infecting squirrels likely originated from a strain introduced from the Americas between 4,000 and 100 years ago.

hi Nick! wanted to let you know that my queer affinity group at work is drafting an "inclusive language guide" for marcomm, and I recognized "sex is biological gender is social" framing that I believe would just lead to more misgendering. I challenged it pretty successfully and I'm helping to write it to be more productive. both my recognizing it and articulating myself well enough that people understood were because of posts you've written, so I wanted to thank you!
that’s so beautiful omg thank you 😭 and thank u x2 for putting that work in. it’s so incredibly frustrating and exhausting making those arguments to people, everyone treats you like you’re an insane sjw (even other queer people sometimes, very frustratingly!) & dealing with that kind of constant response as a trans person takes a toll on you. all to say, I know what the stakes of those conversations are and I’m really glad & grateful to hear you were able to makes those arguments and be heard. & also I will share this compliment with a dear friend of mine because i do a lot of co-thinking with her on this subject and i myself would not be able to articulate my positions re trans theory without us working through them together. anyway acceptance speech over thank u again!!

I am reviving this blog to fulfill an assignment in a graduate course I am taking toward a marketing management degree (MGMT S-6655). In our course, we are discussing the power and place of blogging in the digital world of marcomms. Tumblr, WordPress, and Medium are held as some of the most popular social platforms specific to blogging.
I first created this blog nearly 10 years ago after taking a photojournalism course in my undergraduate degree. I appreciate that my education has inspired me to continue to share my work in a creative space. Shortly after publishing this blog, I studied abroad in Galway, Ireland. This opportunity allowed me to capture many beautiful places in Ireland and other European cities during my travels.
Tumblr feels like an especially perfect outlet for sharing the photos I most like to take, which span styles/genres and can be quite random - landmarks, street life, nature. Since I last posted on this blog in 2017, I have worked in photojournalism and have also delved into portrait photography as a side job, including weddings and family photos. I now work in communications and incorporate some photography into my job, though my role mainly focuses on writing and web management. In my free time I hope to sharpen my skills in travel/street life photos, as this is the area I enjoy most.
Here I share some photos on a recent trip to London in June 2024. It is fun to compare how my photography style has evolved and/or stayed consistent in terms of the subjects I like to capture.

I don't know for sure how all this works and maybe the acclaim doesn't matter, but I feel like it's probably a good thing for IWTV's future that it's getting this level of acclaim and appearing on all these year-end lists? Plus the show and Sam getting the CC nominations. It seems like that would be something AMC would want, a really critically acclaimed show that gets this kind of attention. And it's interesting that it seems like the show's popularity and the level of attention it gets from critics and such have both gone up a lot this year, so hopefully that will continue next year.
Yeah, I think it's a positive thing, anon! I talked about it more in this post, but these sorts of things can actually carry a bit of weight internally - they're good things for AMC to be able to report on to stakeholders and advertisers, being basically qualitative feedback if not quantitative, and it potentially empowers Rolin creatively and opens up doors for everyone involved. It's not going to change the tide of anything, but it's definitely encouraging and I think helps AMC feel justified in their stated commitment to the series.
I agree that it's grown in critical attention too this year. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that so many good shows ended last year - Succession, Barry, Reservation Dogs and The Great, to name just a few - and they just....haven't really been replaced by anything? It's definitely meant that a few shows have actually had the space to really been seen in a way they weren't with those bigger shows crowding the field. IWTV is definitely one of them, I think, and from what I can tell, Slow Horses is another (although I haven't seen it - it's on my list for the summer Christmas break!). It's really great to actually see shows given the time and space to grow again, in that sense, and yeah, I hope that continues into next year too :-)
