Loving You Is Red - A Jeon Jungkook Fic, teaser 3

Synopsis:

Jeon Jungkook's name was unheard on the Formula 1 paddock till he got a chance to drive a Mercedes car as a reserve driver. His 2020 starts looking brighter as he signs with Ferrari and meets you, his teammates little sister. So many cliched tropes, strangers to friends to lovers, slow burn, dating brother's best friend, and most importantly Jeon Jungkook looks smoking hot in a Ferrari!

So, this has been collecting dust in my drafts since I watched Drive to Survive last year, watched the new season, and got motivated to write this fic.

Race 8 Austrian Grand Prix 2020

“Why?” Jungkook asks as he’s walking to the Ferrari office. It’s a meeting and photoshoot heavy day for him.

“Because I have a job now, even if it’s sorting my father’s emails and arranging his meetings, I can’t be there every weekend” you explain calmly as you swivel around in your office chair.

“What’s your day like today?” he asks as a fan stops him for a picture, he’s becoming better at being popular as every race happens.

“We have a few apartment showings, so I’ll be shadowing him, start to figure out if I want to do this or not” you say sipping on your coffee, you’d been arriving early at the office to have some moments of peace before the chaos starts.

“What is your day like?” you ask him and he just grunts, knowing how bad it is to sit through meetings.

“I have a strategy meeting, another meeting with the communications team, lunch with a bunch of promoters and in the evening we’re shooting a bunch of videos for ferrari’s youtube channel” Jungkook reiterates his schedule for the day, and he’s already starting to feel tired.

“Press has just been awful since the last race, no wonder we’re having comms meeting two days in a row” Jungkook had been trying to stay away from the negative headlines but everyone was absolutely shitting on Phillip this week.

“They like pitting you and Phillip against each other, last week was all the ammunition they needed” you had been screening all the click baity articles, they were absolutely making Phillip lose his mind.

“Do you think he hit me on purpose or was I really in his blind spot?” Jungkook asks opening the door to the conference room, most people are already here. Phillip is already slouched against a chair, looking defeated already.

“No comment” “Boo Freaking Hoo!!” he says and you can’t help but smile like a stupid idiot.

“Call me later if you can” you say and Jungkook hums a goodbye as he takes a seat opposite Phillip. 

“So, lots of bad press, people are divided” Claudia says, placing down multiple article print outs and newspapers on the table. 

“And thank you Phillip for snapping at the sky sports reporter, just handing them their headlines” this hasn’t been Phillip’s week, and he’s done with cameras and reporters.

“We need to take hold of the narrative or at least change it because the sponsors aren’t happy with the two drivers seemingly fighting each other. How about you go golfing or something this tuesday” Claudia suggests and Phillip immediately nods his head no. 

“He can’t golf to save his life and I have my sister’s birthday party that day-”

“So, just invite Jungkook, because I really need the news narrative to change” Claudia says with an authoritative tone, the two of them can’t even think about going against her. 

“I don’t want to intrude on a family thing-” Jungkook sounds a little offended by the whole situation, mostly he’s a little ticked off about you not telling him about your coming birthday.

“It’s not, it’s a surprise party with a few friends, I was going to invite you anyway” Phillip says and Claudia smiles widely.

“This is sorted then, I need at least a story with the birthday girl on the two of your instagram’s” The two of them are left alone as Claudia leaves, there’s still this animosity in the air.

“Just so we’re clear, I didn’t hit your car on purpose,” Phillip says, looking Jungkook square in his eyes.

“I know that,” Jungkook replies, a little too confidently.

“How can you be so sure?” Phillip asks as he sits up straight.

“You’re competitive, not petty” Jungkook leaves with a big smirk on his face, he’s been enjoying the season so far a little too much.

Wood Engraving Wednesday

DALE KENNEDY

Happy first day of March 2023! We can almost see the light of spring at the end of this season’s awkward winter tunnel. To reflect how we feel about when and where we are, we present this surreal March wood engraving by Minneapolis wood engraver and printmaker Dale Kennedy from the 2020 calendar of the Wood Engravers’ Network (WEN). In a 2015 oral history interview conducted by Betty Bright for the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, fellow wood engraver and WEN member Bill Myers (who we posted about in the fall) said this about his friend:

Dale Kennedy, who is a noted wood engraver, has a very broad following, including in England. He is a surrealist and he does these tiny, very intricate, very fascinating, out of the subconscious, engravings, which are hell to print because of a lot of fine lines that can fill with ink easily and an expanse of black surface that must be filled with ink. . . . [He} has fallen in love with the iron hand press because it doesn’t hum, doesn’t plug in; it’s totally retro.

Yeah, we can relate to that.

Sally Helme, of Newport, Rhode Island, passed away on March 20, 2024 at the age of 70. Sally, a remarkable figure whose unwavering commitment to advancing women’s participation in sailing has left an enduring legacy. Sally was more than a sailor; she was a visionary leader who championed equality, empowerment and excellence. 

Her journey began as a spirited young woman from Shelter Island sailing for her college team at Princeton; but it was her subsequent involvement that truly set her apart as she earned coveted seats on numerous boards and committees dedicated to promoting sailing.

As the first female publisher in the sailing industry, Sally’s tenure at two widely read and respected sailing magazines reshaped the narrative. She believed in the power of representation, advocating for positive depictions of women – captains, crew and adventurers – across glossy pages. Through captivating photos and insightful articles, she illuminated the challenges, triumphs and sheer joy of life on the water.

In 1994, she joined the New York Times Magazine Group as Associate Publisher. Her responsibilities spanned two iconic sailing titles: Cruising World and Sailing World Magazines. Under her leadership, these publications became essential reading for sailors worldwide. By 1998, she had ascended to the position of Publisher for both titles, a role she would hold for more than two decades.

Sally’s influence extended beyond print; it rippled across regattas and events. As Group Publisher, she oversaw not only Cruising World and Sailing World, but also the National Offshore One Design (NOOD) regattas, an integral part of the sailing calendar. In 2020, Sally transitioned to the esteemed role of Publisher Emeritus under the Bonnier Group.

Dries Van Noten’s most memorable looks, as the Belgian fashion designer steps down

Many famous people, such as Florence Pugh, Cate Blanchett, and Margot Robbie, have worn Dries Van Noten's designs. After 38 years, Belgian designer Dries Van Noten is stepping down as creative director of his namesake fashion brand. "In the early '80s, as a young guy in Antwerp, my dream was to have a voice in fashion. Van Noten fulfilled his dream with the help of many supportive people. He now wants to focus on other things. Fashion firm Puig acquired a majority share in the brand in 2018. He blends the old with the new. He plays around with silhouette. This is mainly seen in the ballooning, oversized shapes of coats and sleeves. The design was showcased at his recent Paris Fashion Week show in February. Florals are a recurring theme in his clothes, and Van Noten says the flowers often inspire him in his garden. While Van Noten's work isn't a red carpet mainstay like some of the other major brands on the Paris Fashion Week calendar, celebrities make an impact when they choose to wear his designs. Florence Pugh was nominated for a BAFTA for her role as Amy March in Little Women back in 2020, and she brought a welcome splash of color to the red carpet in her pink and black Van Noten creation. A fuchsia dress-meets-cape was worn over a black mini dress, with the voluminous sleeves and bow detailing giving a subtle nod to Amy March's fashion. Pink and black were central to Van Noten's work in 2020, as Margot Robbie also wore that color combination to the London premiere of Birds Of Prey the same year. She paired her full black skirt with a feathered bralette, tapping into the trend for underwear as outerwear, and donned hot pink opera gloves. Cate Blanchett chose to wear Dries Van Noten to the Oscars in 2008 when she was pregnant with her third child, Ignatius. The midnight blue gown had an empire line for her bump and gold accents. Additionally, the sequinned flowers on the skirt were particularly eye-catching. Kirsten Dunst wore a floral Van Noten gown to the Baby2Baby Gala in Nov 2023. Noomi Rapace wore a navy and white floral print dress with statement red gloves at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2022. The dress, created by Van Noten, featured dramatic oversized sleeves. A cotton-print dress and Logwood dye

This brown cotton print is a reproduction from a gown in Colonial Williamsburg’s collection (Gown no. 2004-97). While I am still uncertain of whether this dress was originally purple or dyed with logwood, I have chosen that print for this project because:

Logwood dye does brown with age depending on the mordant

Logwood produced a variety of colors including, potentially, this rich brown

Purple is my favorite color and, since it’s a color I like to incorporate into my costumes, I think it’s important to discuss the extent to which European pursuit of this dye contributed to slavery and colonization in central America

Logwood is a type of dyewood used in the 17th and 18th centuries to produce a wide range of dyes, particularly purples and blacks. It was highly sought-after by European nations for their growing textile industries (Newton 16). By Europeans first encountered logwood in the 1550s, when Spaniards waged campaigns against Maya on the Yucatan peninsula (Offen 113). Scholarship largely focuses on British harvesting一British interests in logwood lead to the creation of British Honduras, later Belize. European powers also tried growing logwood elsewhere. The British and French planted logwood in Jamaica, Haiti, and other Caribbean islands, and by the end of the 18th century they had even planted logwood in the Indian and Pacific Oceans (Offen 113). Logwood thus became another product with which colonizers transformed other landscapes for their own profit.

In the 17th century, logwood became a significant component of colonizer economies in the Caribbean. In 1679 in Jamaica, one government paper recorded a sugar export of 7637.75 tons, unsurprisingly the largest export on the table. The second largest export, however, was logwood, at 5119 tons (”Account of Passengers”). Logwood was primarily sold by British “Baymen,” who operated illegally in Spanish Yucutan and Belize. Baymen along the Yucutan Peninsula and Bay of Honduras lead a marginal existence. They relied on their nearby indigenous allies, the Miskito, to aid in protection (Newton 25). But this was not the only way in which the British used indigenous groups. In order to support their logging, they raided nearby Maya villages, enslaving men, women, and children (Bialuschewski 49). Women were forced to stay in the loggers’ camps, while men and children were exported elsewhere, to places including Jamaica and New York (Bialuschewski 50). 

British colonial interests in enslaved Maya waned as the Maya abandoned their nearby villages and the events of King Philip’s war in New England curtailed the market for indigenous slaves overseas (Bialuschewski 49, 51). Nevertheless, the Baymen’s commercial enterprise was still reliant on forced labor. Proximity to British islands in the Caribbean meant that logwood providers along the peninsula and the bay could access a steady stream of enslaved Africans, with Jamaica as the main source (Restall 400). They acquired further enslaved men and women by trading with other merchants, like the Dutch (Newton 29). With an enslaved labor force, exportation of logwood continued to increase. By 1755, Baymen were exporting 13,000 tons of logwood annually (Offen 121-122). By the end of the 18th century, Belize had become a territory wholly dependent on the wood cut by enslaved individuals, who made up ¾ of the total population (Restall 400). 

The logging industry’s existence within the Spanish Empire, far from the protection of English imperial forces, continued to be a source of instability. This instability disproportionately fell on the enslaved African men and women forced to harvest the dyewood. British logging settlements were sites of frequent skirmishes with the Spanish. These skirmishes often took the form of raids in which Spanish forces would seize the enslaved men who worked on Baymen’s operations (Restall 389). But the proximity of Spanish settlements also presented opportunity; enslaved individuals could escape to these settlements claiming their desire to convert to Catholicism, thus having themselves declared free in Spanish territory (Restall 391). 

The British merchants who profited from enslaved production of marketable logwood also found advantage in pursuing religion. In 1727, a group of Baymen offered to donate logwood to Christ Church in Boston, so that the church could benefit from its sale (Newton 15-16). In thanks, the church council had a lavish pew built for them, right next to the pulpit (Newton 16). Over the next 30 years, more than 80 baymen continued donating logwood to Christ Church, assuring that they retained pride of place in the church’s social hierarchy (Newton 17). Patronage of this church acted as a sort of reputation laundering, in which these merchants, scarcely better than buccaneers, illegally harvesting logwood on the fringes of the Spanish empire, could refashion themselves as respectable British gentlemen. Christ Church was also called Old North Church. That was the same church  immortalized in Revolutionary War lore as the sight of the “One if by land, two if by sea” in the journey of Paul Revere. The exploitation of Black and indigenous labor for fashionable dyes therefore has a direct link to one of the most famous popular narratives of the American Revolution.

Logwood presented a unique opportunity for the Thirteen Colonies because it presented a loophole to the resented mercantilist system. Since logwood was harvested outside of the British empire, traders could avoid customs and taxation (Rossano 240). Merchants from New York and New England acted as important middlemen in the logwood trade between the Bay of Honduras and Europe (Newton 19, Rossano 229), and they found the logwood trade to be a convenient source of revenue to offset the cost of desired consumer goods (Rossano 229). Thus, colonial consumers of European imports could still benefit from the exploitation of enslaved labor and disruption of indigenous communities along the Yucatan peninsula, even if they themselves were not directly involved in the logwood trade, or even if they weren’t purchasing logwood-dyed textiles.

The new moon in Pisces approaches, in the midst of the Ides of March, the 74th day of the Roman calendar, celebrated with picnics and revelry. Ides marks the occasion—which begins seven days before the 15th or 13th day depending on the specific month—with 69 minutes of music by Guem, Martin Circus, Theo Vaness, Peter Jacques Band, Elias Rahbani and His Orchestra, Lama, Dinosaur, Tantra, and—celebrating her 75th birthday, which is today—Liza Minnelli.

Infamously the date when dictator Julius Caesar was assassinated via 23 stabs, the Ides of March ostensibly marks the date of Mamuralia, a festival of late antiquity celebrated by dressing an old man in animal skins to then be beaten with a stick and driven off town—the spirit of the old year departing…

Last year, the Ides personally kicked off the 2020 Portal, the entry into a time of accelerated evolution of humankind. Planet Earth has already entered the 5th dimension—an awareness of all-being-one. Humanity is invited to follow suit.

Many revelations are to come in this exciting month of March 2021: the Eastern seaboard has already been dazzled with a summer-like week yielding to the wind…

Cate Blanchett chose to wear Dries Van Noten to the Oscars in 2008 when she was pregnant with her third child, Ignatius. The midnight blue gown had an empire line for her bump and gold accents. He was convinced. People’d lost their damn minds.

Bucky had survived warzone trenches in Europe. Had lived through the Great Depression. And had never seen the level of human stupidity he’d witnessed the first few days of March 2020. It’s an airborne illness - why the hell were people buying 96 rolls of toilet paper at a whack? What were they gonna do, wrap it around their mouths and breathe through it?

The Avengers Tower was going through its own issues. Stark vowed to spend his self-isolation inside one of his suits; a good idea in theory until he realized he still had to pee. Steve kept expounding on the virtues of using the time to catch up on reports. Natasha spent her time snorting at the treasure trove of new social media memes while Clint thumbed his nose at the whole thing by licking every door knob he passed. Bucky was washing his hands more just because of that. Gross.

Yes, they were pretty well hooked up to do the shelter in place, social distance, whatever the hell they were calling this thing. Bucky couldn’t fault Tony (well, probably mostly Pepper) for the very streamlined system in place that kept the Tower stocked with all manner of essentials. And, the Stark Foundation was busily getting help where it needed to go while Bruce videoconferenced with Dr. Cho and Shuri on treatments and vaccines. They were good to go for the foreseeable future.

His only real worry was you.

Your rheumatoid arthritis made this whole thing much more dicey, and - if he was being honest - a frick ton scarier. The illness suppressed your immune system, which meant you had to be more proactive on a normal day with handwashing, etc. Throw in a virus with no vaccine and no treatment? ‘Proactive’ took on a whole new definition. Sanitizing surfaces and extra cleanliness efforts were easy to step up. But he knew how much you hated being cooped inside. It didn’t help that the humidity had climbed up into the 70-ish percent region. The heavy air, coupled with the bite of winter chill still hanging on to the calendar, had your already tender joints pitching all kinds of a fit.

Right now, you were curled up in your favorite spot - a well padded window seat overlooking Central Park. Bucky had switched on the fancy fake fireplace for you, had wrapped you in blankets and propped you with pillows. The light pouring in haloed a bright shine to your hair, which normally would have a smile on his face. But your wan face pulled a grimace from him instead. Your shoulders rose and fell with a sigh, and Bucky would have cheerly scrubbed every surface of the whole damn Tower to get you out and about and smiling again.

A knock on the door spun him on his heel, and Bucky stalked to the door. Everyone knew the protocol - no visitors allowed!

“What.” Not a question, but a cold, terse demand. Steve drew a deep breath as he measured the look being leveled at him. He’d faced firing tanks with less caution. His friend’s frown was fierce versus his blank murder stare. Bucky was mad but not in an assassinating mood. 

“Buck, I’m not gonna stay. I just wanted to stop in and say hi.”

“I’ll tell her you said so.” The door swung closed in his face. Steve rolled his eyes, throwing his arms up in disgust.

“C’mon, man.”

“No.” Exasperated, Steve couldn’t help the smile that tugged at his mouth. You and Bucky were a match made in heaven. Eidetic brain with the memory of an elephant, you were hands down one of the best analysts he’d had the privilege of working with. You chased after clues relentlessly, bulldogged in your tenacity. Straight up bullheaded in your obstinacy, though. 

If anyone could out-stubborn you, it was Bucky. Lord knows, he had enough experience chasing after a certain runt who couldn’t stay out of back alley brawls. Steve knew that, in odd moments, it still struck his friend that he didn’t need his help in the same ways. When Bucky’s muscle memory had him moving before his brain caught up if Steve coughed or sneezed. He could practically see the wheels turning as Bucky struggled to stitch together broken memories with current moments. A natural protector, Bucky needed someone to nurture. To cajole and wheedle and, if necessary, out-stubborn. You fit the bill to a tee.

“I don’t have coronavirus, Bucky!”

The door snatched back open. “Oh, yeah? And how do you know that?”

“I can’t get sick. Serum, remember?”

Bucky glared at him through squinted eyes before stepping back into the apartment.

“Carrier,” he hissed, slamming the door again.

“Was that Steve?”  Fatigue even hung heavy in your voice, the faintest gravel in the back of your throat threading a husk into your words. Bucky winced with you when you shifted in your seat, struggling painfully to stand.

“Yeah. Now I’m gonna have to wipe off the door knob again,” he groused as he briskly rubbed sanitizer over his hands. “Clint’s such a dumb ass.”

You snorted softly as you padded towards him. “I know. Who licks door knobs to prove a point?”

Taking in your stiff posture, Bucky leaned in close and pressed a kiss to your forehead. 

“Why’d you get up? What do you need? I’ll get it,” he murmured into your hair. Your sigh huffed softly against his chest as you gratefully leaned against him, glancing at the clock in the kitchen.

“I should probably take another dose of ibuprofen,” the words mumbled up, uncertain. The illness had dragged up new challenges - too many doses of the NSAID was ripping up your stomach. Steroids helped, too, but you couldn’t take too many rounds too close together, and you’d already taken one prescription a month ago when the wet winter had your shoulders and wrists feeling like they were grinding straight through to your bone marrow. Pepper and your doctor were trying to get a DMARD approved through insurance, but with all this new virus ‘fit hitting the shan’, the insurance company backlog was sky high. That left you with balancing growing joint discomfort against growing stomach unhappiness. Thank God for ice packs and Tony’s ridiculously over-the-top whirlpool baths.

Bucky held in his own sigh as he pondered your situation. “Let me make you some of that chamomile tea and some toast to go with it.”

He didn’t think it possible, but your shoulders sagged even more. “I’m really not hungry, Buck.”

Threading his fingers through your hair, he gently rubbed the back of your head the way you liked.

“I’ll make it with that raspberry rutabaga jam on it. You want that?”

The catch in your throat grew to a fist-sized lump fit to choke you. The throbbing in your shoulders and arms radiated in time with your heartbeat up into your brain. Your knees felt weird - rubbery, tender, like you weren’t sure they’d support you. You missed your job, you missed your friends, you missed outside. As much as you adored Bucky, you were lonely for the other pieces of your life. The misery in your heart swelled to mammoth proportions, and you couldn’t choke back the sob that broke from you.

“I want -”

Bucky’s gut pinched so hard it hurt when you started crying. “What, love? What do you want? Anything, I’ll get it for you.”

Crying just made everything hurt more, and you swallowed hard to shove down the tears, anxiety, and stress. You glanced up, seeing the stress that pulled tight lines into Bucky’s face. You tried to offer him a smile and knew you failed pathetically.

“Rhubarb, hun. It’s raspberry rhubarb jam.”

Bucky saw you trying, knew you were trying to make him feel better, and wanted to cry himself. He’d do anything to bring back your smile.

“Rutabaga, rhubarb, whatever. You go sit, I’ll bring it out to you with the ibuprofen.”

You shook your head as you stepped away from his urging embrace. “No, I need to move around a little.” Neither of you spoke as you moved to the kitchen, content in the quiet puttering as Bucky filled the kettle and popped bread in the toaster. Out of habit, he went to wash his hands when an idea hit him.

Staring blankly out the window, your thoughts drifted to your ‘to be read’ pile as you tried to decide between starting a new book from your oft-ignored stack or comfort yourself with a lovely reread. You were so lost in your musings, you didn’t track on the activity behind you.

“Babe, can you grab the butter and jam? I’m washing my hands.”

You turned around to step to the fridge, stopped in your tracks at the sight before you, and burst out laughing. 

Bucky had taken off his metal arm and put it in the dishwasher.

Hilarity pealed from you in waves, folding you over as you leaned against the counter. You tried to catch your breath and glanced up at Bucky. The proud-as-punch smile on his face set you off again, laughing so hard your shoulders twinged at you.

When a snort broke into your snickers, Bucky couldn’t help but laugh with you. Giddiness swirled with relief at your delight, and he felt prouder in that moment that he did receiving his U.S. Army Expert Marksmanship medal in ‘42. He knew he couldn’t carry your burden for you, but in this moment, he’d lightened it a bit. Moving in close, he gathered you to his chest with his other arm, relishing the feel of your giggles against him. You gasped for breath as you wiped the tears from eyes, then reached up to cup his face in your hands, smiling fondly into his twinkling gaze.

“I love you, you giant goofball. Thank you for taking such good care of me.” 

Bucky leaned down and kissed the tip of your nose.

“Gotta take care of my best girl.” Giving you the gentlest of squeezes, he then urged you back to your cozy nest. “Go sit. I’ll bring it all out in a few.”

Still grinning, you headed for your phone. “First, I gotta get my phone. This is going on Twitter!”

The Brandon Men: In The Shadow of Kings, Sarah Bryson (15 April, 2021)

Four generations of Brandon men lived and served six English Kings, the most famous being Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, best friend and brother-in-law to King Henry VIII. Yet his family had a long history that ties so closely to the kings of the Wars of the Roses back to Henry VI. Charles Brandon's father, Sir William Brandon, joined the Tudor claimant and became standard bearer for Henry Tudor, dying at the Battle of Bosworth. Charles' uncle, Sir Thomas Brandon, held the position of Henry VII's Master of the Horse, one of the three highest positions within the court.

Henry VII: Treason and Trust, Sean Cunningham (12 March 2020)

Henry VII was one of England's unlikeliest monarchs. An exile and outsider with barely a claim to the throne, his victory over Richard III at Bosworth Field seemed to many in 1485 like only the latest in the sequence of violent convulsions among England's nobility that would come to be known as the wars of the roses - with little to suggest that the obscure Henry would last any longer than his predecessor. To break that cycle of division, usurpation, deposition and murder, he had both to maintain a grip on power and to convince England that his rule was both rightful and effective. The Yeomen of the Guard and the Early Tudors: The Formation of a Royal Bodyguard, Anita Hewerdine (28 May 2020)

The Queen's Body Guard of the Yeomen of the Guard is the world's oldest surviving royal bodyguard, having been founded by Henry VII in 1485. Today it is purely a ceremonial body, but in the past it was a true bodyguard and the nucleus of a fighting force at a time when England had no standing army. Even in its early years its ceremonial role was of great importance, supplying a richly arrayed retinue to enhance the King's status. In this first comprehensive study of the early years of the Yeomen of the Guard during the reigns of Henry VII and Henry VIII, Anita Hewerdine examines the variety of roles performed by the Guard, both within and outside the Court, as well as detailing the apparel worn by the yeomen and the weaponry with which they were equipped. Hewerdine's book is the result of intensive research, using numerous unpublished documents, as well as a variety of printed sources not readily accessible to the general public. It will be essential reading for researchers of Early Modern Military History and sheds light on a previously overlooked aspect of the Tudor Court.

Eight kings of England have borne the name Henry, but only two of them were born as heirs to the throne:

Two seized the crown by force of arms, one by craft and opportunistic speed, and one by skilful diplomacy and an early flowering of that great British virtue, compromise. Among their number are saints and monsters, the best known and the least known of English kings. One was a storybook hero, leading an army to triumph against overwhelming odds.
