🌟 "Stand and Deliver" is a song by British new wave band Adam and the Ants, released as the lead single from their third studio album, Prince Charming (1981). It was the band's first No. 1 hit in the UK. The phrase "stand and deliver — your money or your life", used in the lyrics, is commonly associated with highwaymen in 18th century England.
‘Adam already had this idea about a highwayman. He'd gone off in the kitchen to make some tea and by the time he'd come back I'd come up with the “galloping” verse. The verse is the same as the chorus, but there is a little descending bit which he came up with. And then there's the verse and different key for the guitar solo. Adam came up with the “Da diddley qa qa” lyric. He'd had that line knocking about for ages.'
-Marco Pirroni.
Adam picks up the conversation: 'Marco and I wrote the music together and I wrote the lyrics and top line. My inspiration for the song came from the idea of the heroic English antihero highwayman holding up a stagecoach, but stealing people's attention instead of their valuables.'
‘I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.’ Adam explains.
‘A revolution took place in the early 80s. Music suddenly had to look as provocative as it sounded.’
-Adam Ant.
‘We wrote "Stand and Deliver" and Prince Charming at the same time,’ says Pirroni. ‘Before I even picked up the guitar, I knew they were going to be No.1. That wasn’t me being arrogant. In my head it was just a fact.’
🌟 Marco Pirroni recalls going round to Adam’s house in Kensington to write "Stand and Deliver".
🌟 "Stand and Deliver" earned Adam and Marco an Ivor Novello award in 1982. It is published by SONY/ATV Music Publishing and Universal Music Publishing.

Siouxsie formed her band The Banshees (at the time consisting of Steve Severin, Sid Vicious, and Marco Pirroni) only a few days before the 100 Club Punk Special after being told by Malcolm McLaren that there was a need for one more band
There was a vacant space for a group, and it was being discussed at Louise’s. Perhaps someone had pulled out. Malcolm was saying, ‘We need another band’, and I volunteered. ‘We’ve got a band.’ And we hadn’t, we spent the night trying to find a band.
- Siouxsie Sioux, The England's Dreaming Tapes
since The Banshees had no songs of their own, their set consisted of a 20 minute improvisation based on the Lord's Prayer and a few covers of 'uncool' songs just to infuriate the audience
It was taking the piss out of all the things we hated. Whether
Marco put it in for whatever reason, and me wailing over the top of it, not singing the lyrics but singing ‘Knocking on Heaven’s Door’ to ‘Smoke on the Water’ and ‘The Lord’s Prayer’, and Steve trying to find how to turn his bass on, or something. And Sid with this bull-dozer rhythm, relentless banging.
[...]
We expected to be stopped by outside forces. We didn’t envisage being able to get away with it, really. One of the songs was ‘She Loves You’, and also ‘Young Love’ by the Bay City Rollers. What song do you really hate? What would you like to throw in as a shock tactic? What can we mutilate and destroy? It was all our least favourite things.
- Siouxsie Sioux, The England's Dreaming Tapes
The Banshees were meant to split up after the gig but they were asked to play more so Siouxsie and Severin decided to commit to being musicians and asked Kenny Morris and Peter Fenton to come aboard. the rest is punk/goth history!

Billy Idol and Siouxsie Sioux reunited for the first time in 32 years! The iconic pair who were the core of the mythical gang of freak kids who followed the early Pistols around reunited just before the Cruel World festival in Pasadena this weekend. Billy himself was nearly a temporary Banshee who was meant to play the band’s debut gig at 1976’s 100 Club Punk Festival before getting Marco Pirroni (Adam and the Ants) to replace him. (Future Sex Pistols bassist Sid Vicious played drums.)

NEVER FORGET HOW THE GREAT SIXTIES MUTATED INTO A CRUCIAL LOOK SUCH AS THIS ONE.
PIC INFO: Spotlight on the quintessential face of first wave UK punk rock -- Soo "Catwoman" Lucas, photographed by Peter Marlow at the Roxy Club, London, England, c. 1976.
WE HEART THIS: "How did you get involved with the punk scene, and at what age?"
SOO LUCAS: "I had always been aware that I was an "odd one out" due to my dress sense and hairstyles and it was apparently my appearance that prompted an invite from a girl who approached me one Saturday during the Summer of 1976 when I was out shopping with Marco Pirroni (of ADAM AND THE ANTS).
She invited me to Club Louise that night in Poland Street, London. It was there that I met Sid and John for the first time. I was 21."
WE HEART THIS: "Who did you really enjoy hanging out with back then?"
SOO: "Sid and John in the early days, before they were famous. I hung out a lot with Sid on his own too but he was always happier when John was around. They were like a comedy double act and both had a great sense of humour.
They seemed to know what each other were thinking. Despite the seriousness that comes across in the old pictures and footage of that time – it was also very light-hearted and a lot of fun."
