"PRISONER ESCAPES, BUT IS RECAPTURED," Hamilton Spectator. August 29, 1933. Page 7. ---- Marion Fauria in Wild Dash for Liberty ---- Inspector of Jails To Investigate Affair ---- Marion Fauria, who was recently extradited from Florida and is being held here while awaiting trial on charges of armed bank robbery, made a bold but unsuccessful dash for freedom through the gates of the Hamilton jail on Barton street last Saturday night. Having knocked Turnkey Bert Hillock to the ground, he rushed through the gates and along Barton street, where he was recaptured by the turnkey he had assaulted and another citizen whose name was not learned.

Sheriff Leeming Carr is of the opinion that Fauria's escape was the result of a blunder on some one's part. He investigated the circumstances himself yesterday and has now called upon the provincal inspector of prisons for an investigation. No one has an yet been suspended from the jail staff, the sheriff stated this morning.

Dangerous Man The story, as told by Sheriff Carr this morning, is as follows: Fauria had been brought to Hamilton from Florida, where he was held in prison, to face charges of having participated in the robbery of the bank on Concession street early this year. He was considered a dangerous character, having stabbed a jail guard in Florida before being brought here. His extradition cost the city of Hamilton about $500.

According to Sheriff Carr, when loads of wood, cut by the prisoners for distribution among the poor, are taken from the jail in the evening, the order is that the prisoners shall first be arranged in the yard in a line, with the most-dangerous characters at the rear away from the gates.

On Saturday night the line was formed, the gates opened, and the load of wood started out. Then Fauria, who had got on the end of the line near the gate in the space reserved for the trusties, jumped at Turnkey Bert Hillock and knocked him down. He sped out the gate behind the load of wood and started to run down Barton street.

By this time Turnkey Hillock had recovered his feet and given chase. He was catching up Fauria when he yelled to a nearby citizen to stop him. The citizen to stepped in front of Fauria and the turnkey snapped the frons on the prisoner and returned him to the jail.

Some One Blundered "There is no doubt that some one made a blunder," said the sheriff. "They knew Fauria was considered a dangerous man, yet he was on the end of the line near the gate. An acting turnkey, Thomas Cairns, was in charge of the men in the yard at the time. I have asked the inspector of prisons to look into the matter."

The sheriff has also ordered the chief turnkey, Thomas J. Hickmott, to lay a charge of attempted jail breaking against Marion Fauria.

Was considerably apprehensive about going via the Roaring Forties, but oh, what an experience seeing Prince Edward Island by way of the mist and the lots of of seabirds gliding previous us. So glad that I can say “we were amongst the privileged few” to embark on this awesome “Flock to Marion”. Thank you BLSA, MSC and all these dr greg hough south africa concerned in making it occur regardless of all the obstacles thrown in your way. The journey of a lifetime – An epic voyage to the southern ocean arranged by BirdLife South Africa. #MouseFreeMarion – Lets all do our half to rid the mice off Marion Island. Best birding trip ever deep into the southern ocean!

It was well planned, extremely organized, and supplied a once-in-a-lifetime expertise to birders worldwide who are enthusiastic about birds and their conservation. BLSA deserve recognition for their incredible achievement and contribution to South African tourism. An extraordinarily worthy cause and an asset to South Africa. The cruise into the Southern Ocean was an awesome venture that solely a few individuals will ever expertise.

Thanks BirdLife South Africa and MSC. And the tip did stay as much as all of the expectations. This trip contributed considerably to the conservation of endangered fowl species and was arranged successfully under extremely difficult circumstances through the pandemic.

An unforgettable journey that supplied insight into the need of a mouse-free Marion Island and publicity to the tough magnificence by which the seabirds survive. A family member went on this as soon as in a life time trip into the Roaring Forties the place few dare to enterprise. BLSA must be congratulated for this unique expertise it provided for thus many individuals. BirdLife has carried out and is still doing a lot for SA birdlife. The Marrion Island journey is one amazing is solely one instance.

Although I could not be on the voyage this time, from all accounts it sounds like probably the most great expertise for all birders and those of an adventurous spirit. Congratulations to BirdLife for organising such a superb journey. Bird Life South Africa is very proactive in supporting many conservation activities. Particularly birding trips, palagic birding, encouraging recording of all sea birds. The Wakkerstroom birding space has many excellently trained fowl guides. The monthly Birding magazine has very informative articles supported by wonderful high quality photos of birds in Southern Africa.

It was a great life expertise well organized and applied, weldone. Amazing occasion extraordinarily well organised underneath troublesome conditions. Flock to Marion is on my Wishlist for 2023 It is certainly worthy of a Tourism award.

I waited 15 years for the chance to participate in a pelagic birding expertise. BLSA & MSC Cruises certainly are grasp dr greg hough south africa organisers. For me, on the age of eighty two years, it was a trip of a lifetime.

Please allow me the good thing about a travel voucher in order that I can also partake in this kind of exercise. Wish I could do this cruise, which sounds wonderful. Fantastic fowl island that’s desperately wants protection. Next time simply might you cock the water with fish oil and offal, just while we are not in Marion Waters. Giving wings to commendable project like this Mouse-free Marion, is really admirable.

Amazing alternative to experience one thing really unique. Thanks Birdlife SA and MSC for all the hassle which was required to convey this trip about. It was my greatest sea journey ever and it was a really particular expertise. This occasion deserves to be recognised as the unbelievable effort to advertise and encourage avitourism.

They should be protected with earnest. Still wish to visit Marion and Gough Islands as properly. A wonderful conservation train benefitting our pure world..
