Maron
A few weeks ago I watched a comedian on Netfix named Marc Maron. I watched his stand up and fell in love with his storytelling and raw self abusive comedy. I listened to his comedy albums on Spotify and even started listening to his podcast a little bit during my drives.
I just finished his show, Maron (IFC), on Netflix as well. At the end of the finale after four seasons, I felt a sense of euphoria and relief that I didn’t imagine that I’d feel from a show like this.
Marc Maron, as depicted on this show based on his life, is an ill tempered 50 something year old that is realistic, self destructive, and narcissistic. Throughout the show you see him grow as a character: developing friendships with lovable characters, acknowledging and working on his problems, and building his career.
The show connects the viewer with Maron with his sarcastic remarks, down to earth/level headed personality, and his struggles.
Due to his deeply rooted nature, he destroys it all. He reaches the lowest point in his life and we watch a man who was on the verge of absolute success return to absolutely nothing. We follow him through his rise to fame, his fall, and then to his struggle to return to a normalcy and our feelings toward the character continuously fluctuate from cheering for him to being ashamed of him.
At a point, he comes to an epiphany that someone as self-destructive as himself can never truly be happy because he will always ruin it. The final season revolves around him trying to make things right and him refusing to accept his self diagnosed fate.
The show concludes with the viewer being shown a positive future for Maron, with the final shot being of him smiling, giving the viewer a sense that he has finally found peace.
With that, it gave someone like myself who has found alot of himself in Maron enough optimism that life may be crap at times, but it can still be possible to be happy, and that you can change to be a better person.

'Sword of Trust' Thrives On the Energy of its Cast
‘Sword of Trust’ Thrives On the Energy of its Cast
Tumblr media
While driving over to a screening of “Sword of Trust.” I ended up in a fender bender which succeeded in ruining my mood for the rest of the day. As a result, I came into this movie wondering if I could look at it objectively as my mind kept going back to the unfortunate incident, and I was fuming at how I could not change what just happened. Well, it’s a good thing I waited a couple of days to…

@ziggy51 (it’s not letting me tag you for some reason, hope you see this!)
My first job in TV was as a production office production assistant -- the production office is sort of the central nervous system of a TV show, and so as production office PA, I did a lot of tasks across many departments. I did this for three shows (Aquarius on NBC, Maron on IFC, and Better Things on FX). I was only on the pilot of Better Things -- typically you film the pilot first to show to the network before it gets picked up as a full series, so after the pilot I had a little time off but was hoping when we all came back they would hire me as the production assistant for the writer’s room (there is no writer’s room for a pilot, so they didn’t have one already -- and I was hoping they’d pick me!). However, during that time, one of the writer’s room PAs on The Blacklist left and they were looking for someone. I applied for the job and got it!
That was season 3 of The Blacklist and I was the writer’s room PA for two seasons. For season 5, I was promoted to script coordinator, which I have discussed here before, including in the previous ask.
During season 6, my second year as script coordinator, my showrunners told me that they would be open to hearing my episode ideas. I wrote a pitch for the episode that became 618, “The Brockton College Killer,” and it went really well and they were very supportive, and they asked me to be a writer on season 7. And the rest is history!
Many showrunners are supportive of their assistants, but the Johns are especially so -- over the course of the series, eight assistants have written episodes, and seven have been promoted to writer. I consider myself very lucky to have worked not only for two guys who see their assistants not as lunch robots but as writers in their own right, as well as a show that has gone on long enough for them to have had the time to nurture so many of us. That combination doesn’t always happen, especially not on your first show in the writer’s room, and I am really grateful for it.
