AN: I've loved the idea of Jo and Lexie being best friends forever and I'm so excited to share this with you all!
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie woke up to a lot of noise at Jo and Alex's house. Pots and pans were banging down in the kitchen, the shower and subsequent fan were running from the bathroom down the hall, and Cristina and Owen were loudly having sex in the other room. She groaned and rolled over in the empty bed, pulling her husband's pillow over her face.
She and Mark had bought a house because the apartment was getting too small for them. Plus they wanted extra rooms for Sofia and any future siblings they had. When they moved out of the apartment they expected that their new house would be ready, but the contractor had found an issue with the plumbing. In the meantime, She and Mark were staying at formerly Meredith’s, now Alex’s house for a few days.
Alex and Jo's place was always noisy, unlike their quiet apartment. Despite several hours of sleep, Lexie was still tired and rolled over trying to doze off again. She and Derek had stayed late clipping a rather tricky aneurysm and she had the morning off. Despite the loud noises around her, soon enough she was able to fall back asleep.
“Good morning Mrs. Sloan,” Mark's smooth voice drifted into her ear as she woke up and felt his feathered lips over her cheek.
“That's Dr. Grey-Sloan to you,” Lexie said as she smiled and he turned to kiss her lips.
“Well, Dr. Grey-Sloan, how did you sleep? Mark asked, pulling back and drying off his wet hair.
“Pretty well, you?”
“Okay, but maybe we should see if we can stay with Derek and Meredith. It's a frat house out there.”
“It's not a frat house,” Lexie said, rolling over and watching Mark get dressed admiring her husband's body. “And Derek and Meredith have the DC thing, we're not getting in the middle of that.”
“Karev is drinking coffee out of a paper cup. Wilson is passed out on the floor of the guest bathroom, so I had to shower in the master bath. Yang and Hunt are going at it like bunnies 24/7, and there's barely any furniture. Our mattress is on the floor Lexie, the floor!”
Lexie bit her lip to hide her smile at her husband's distress. Mark had never had to live with roommates before. Even in college, his parents had paid for him to have his own apartment. At their apartment, they'd never had more than one other person staying with them, except for when they had Sofia and babysat Zola overnight.
“Alex is using paper dishes probably because the dishwasher didn't get started last night. Jo’s got the flu and the toilet in the master bath is broken. Cristina and Hunt aren’t always going at it and Jo said that she and Alex are in the process of buying more furniture. They just can't agree on anything.”
“Yeah, well the sooner the plumbing in our new house is done, the sooner we get out of here,” Mark said, leaning down to kiss her again and Lexie laughed and tilted her head as their lips met. “I’m heading to work, what time will you be in?”
“I don't have to be in till later but I'll meet you for lunch,” Lexie said, pulling him in for one more kiss.
“It’s a date,” Mark said, smiling at her with a twinkle in his eye that she loved so much.
He kissed her goodbye one last time before heading out and Lexie got up and headed down to the kitchen. Cristina and Owen were finishing up their breakfast, running around, trying to get out of the house in time for rounds. She went to grab herself a mug of coffee but put the pot back the second she got a whiff of the foul-smelling drink. Alex must have used some bad beans and Lexie decided to forego coffee and head straight for the shower.
She turned on the hot water in the guest bathroom and let the shower warm up. Then she went over to the cabinet, pushing away the pillows and blankets where Jo and Alex had spent the night on the floor. Lexie grabbed her toiletry bag and went back to the sink only for the door to slam open as Jo ran in. She headed straight for the toilet and immediately vomited.
Lexie ran to kneel beside her friend and rubbed her back as the rest of Jo’s stomach contents came up. Luckily, Jo wasn't sick for very long. When she was finished Jo leaned against the wall and closed her eyes. Lexie put a hand on her forehead, but Jo swatted her away.
“Let me see if you’re still running a temperature,” Lexie insisted, going over to the cabinet and retrieving the thermometer.
“I don't have a temperature,” Jo insisted with a shake of her head.
“You look flushed. Have you been able to keep anything down?” Lexie asked, completely ignoring Jo's protest as she came back with a thermometer.
“I’m not sick,” Jo said as Lexie sat down next to her and tried to put her hand on Jo's forehead again.
“You just threw up, I think that counts as being sick,” Lexie said, crossing her arms and giving Jo a look. “Do I need to call Alex and get answers from him?”
“No, please don’t call Alex. I barely convinced him to go to work today, I'm not sick,” Jo said, biting her lip as she leaned forward and whispered to her. “I think I'm pregnant!”
Jo looked at her with a terrified expression. Lexie went wide-eyed and her jaw dropped.
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie quickly decided they needed to go to the drugstore for an actual test. They both got dressed and ready before they got in the car and headed out. They had barely spoken more than a general acknowledgment of needing a test. As they drove, Lexie looked over at Jo from the driver's seat. She leaned against the window, buried in Alex's oversized hoodie.
The two of them had been best friends since Jo’s first day. Jo had a sort of fight or drive inside of her. She never gave up. She fought for what she believed was right and Lexie admired her for it. They were also both prone to nervousness and squirrely behavior as they often talked each other out of a spiral. Lexie felt like she could confide in Jo and they both would talk to one another about anything and everything. Lexie felt like Jo got her like no one else did and like they had known each other forever. With Jo, Lexie finally felt like she had a best friend. One that wasn't already Meredith's friend. Jo was her person.
“How far along do you think you are?” Lexie asked, breaking the silence.
She remembered Jo complaining about her period cramps exactly six weeks ago, so she could only be that far along.
“I don't know, six weeks or so,” Jo said with a shrug, confirming Lexie's theory.
“What makes you think you're pregnant?”
“I'm throwing up all the time and my period is a week and a half late.”
“Are you sure it’s not just stress from the resident firing? I mean your entire back was covered in hives. Stress can delay a period, you know, and Alex said you had a fever last night.”
“No, it can't be that because Leah was fired a few days ago. Things have gone back to normal, but I'm still puking,” Jo said, shaking her head and rubbing her forehead. “I can't believe this is happening. Alex and I have been so careful. I have an IUD and we've used condoms, not all the time, but still!”
“If so then why do you think you’re pregnant?* Lexie said, glancing over at her again. *Do you have any food aversions, cravings, frequent urination, or breast tenderness?”
“No, well kinda, my boobs hurt, and I've been tired, and of course, I'm puking all the time so I don’t have much of an appetite.”
All of a sudden the realization dawned on Lexie. The symptoms she was describing to Jo were exactly what she had been experiencing the last couple of days. Her period had always been off or barely there due to the birth control she was taking. So she couldn't be sure if she was late. Yet, she had a touch of nausea, her breasts were sore, she suddenly hated the smell of coffee, she had been peeing like crazy, and she was always exhausted.
“What is it? You're making a face, why are you making that face! Do you really think I’m pregnant?” Jo said, her voice growing more panicked as she spoke.
“I don’t know,” Lexie said, knowing that her eyes were as wide as saucers as she glanced over at Jo having stopped at a red light. “But I think I might be pregnant!”
Jo’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped. Then she scrambled to grab the plastic barf bag on the car floor and threw up. Which pretty much summed up how Lexie felt at the sudden realization that she could be pregnant too.
……………………………………………………………………
“Hey, Karev,” Mark said, spotting Alex at the Nurses’ station and walking over to him. “What time is the plumber supposed to be there to fix your toilet?
“Um, I think sometime this evening,” Alex said looking up from his tablet. “Why?”
“No reason,” Mark said with a shrug.
Alex nodded and went back to looking at his chart. Despite how close Jo and Lexie were, Alex and Mark had only hung out when the girls did. Mark felt weird hanging out with the former residence alone. He stood next to the nurse’s station wondering how to talk to him.
“Do you need anything else, Sloan?” Alex said slowly, looking back at him and raising his eyebrows. He seemed just as uncomfortable as Mark did.
“Has Jo said anything about Lexie feeling off recently?” Mark asked, raising an eyebrow.
Most of the time Lexie and Jo kept their conversations between themselves. However, occasionally Lexie would tell him about whatever was going on with Jo, so he figured Jo did the same with Alex.
“She's your wife, shouldn't you already know what’s going on?” Alex asked with a smirk and a raised eyebrow in return.
“She keeps brushing me off,” Mark said, leaning against the desk. “I know something was off with her. I just can't put my finger on it. I know she hasn't been feeling well, but I have a feeling it’s more than that.”
“Eh, she's probably just got the flu like Jo does,” Alex said with a shrug. “They hang out all the time. I'm surprised they aren't both sick already.”
“Maybe, Lexie was a little nauseous yesterday,” Mark said, watching a few of the other staff walk by. “Is that how it started for Jo?”
“Yeah, it was that and a fever,” Alex nodded, looking out from his chart with a frown.
“But she’s doing better, yeah?” Mark asked not sure if it was his place to ask.
“Yeah, she was asleep in our bed when I left,” Alex said, with a shrug of his shoulders.
He tried to seem nonchalant about it, but Mark saw him pull out his phone and check his messages from Jo. His frown deepened when he saw there were no new messages.
Mark nodded thinking about Lexie. It was probably just the flu but. “It just feels like it’s more, and I get the feeling that she's trying to hide it from me.”
“Well, I'm sure whatever it is, she'll tell you eventually. Lexie's not one to keep secrets,” Alex said, giving him a reassuring nod.
Thanks, Mark said, breathing out a sigh of relief. "You're probably right.*
*Probably?* Alex asked with a smile as Mark chuckled.
“Should we be friends now because Lexie and Jo are each other's person?” Mark asked, with a shrug.
They had spent a lot more time around each other now that he and Lexie were crashing at the house. Still, he wasn't sure if he wanted to be friends with Alex.
“Nope,” Alex immediately said as he turned to walk away.
“I take offense to that Karev,” Mark called after him, but Alex just laughed.
Still, Mark couldn't help but smile. It was that playful banter that the two of them had. Now, he wondered if it would grow into an actual friendship.
……………………………………………………………………
The light turned green and the smell of the vomit in the car made Lexie's stomach churn as Jo tied up the plastic bag and set it on the floor. She decided to make a left turn and head straight for the hospital instead of the pharmacy. She was hoping Jo wouldn't notice their sudden change of directions, but of course she did.
“No Lexie, please I don't take us to the hospital. I don't want anyone seeing me like this,” Jo pleaded with her.
“As your chief resident, I am insisting that we get blood tests. We need to know for sure,” Lexie said, taking a deep breath and trying to calm her nerves.
“You're not my chief resident anymore,” Jo said, crossing her arms and glaring at her.
“No, I'm a fellow, which means you definitely have to listen to me,” Lexie said glaring right back at her. Jo pouted and sat back in the seat as Lexie pulled into the hospital parking lot.
Lexie had to practically drag Jo into the hospital, but they managed to sneak in and occupy an empty patient room. There they each took each other's blood and sent it to the lab. Jo got sick again and Lexie held back her hair, tying it into a bun. Lexie thought about admitting Jo just in case. Her forehead was hot to the touch and she admitted to not having kept anything down since yesterday morning. As Jo finished spitting in the bowl, she leaned against the wall. Lexie put her arm around her shoulder as they leaned their heads against each other.
“What are you going to do if you're pregnant?” Lexie asked, staring at the wall of the bathroom.
“I don’t know,” Jo whispered as she grabbed Lexie’s hand. She intertwined their fingers, as they often did, and gave her hand a squeeze. “What about you? Are you ready to be a mom?”
“Yeah, I’m ready for kids,” Lexie said and for the first time, she was.
Lexie smiled and looked over at Jo to see a smile spread across her face as well they both giggled and put their foreheads together.
“I don't know if I'm ready, I'm only a second-year resident and Alex is never home. We're both focused on our work right now. We haven't even talked about kids, other than the fact that we don't want them right now,” Jo said, letting out a sigh and shaking her head. “But you and Mark, you talked about this or at least the possibility of it. This is what you want, yeah?”
“Yeah, it is,” Lexie said as a smile spread across her face.
She and Mark had talked about whether they wanted kids now or in a year, now that she had passed her boards, even though she was still doing her fellowship with Derek. They hadn't decided to start trying yet. Something that Jo knew all about, of course. Yet, now that it was in front of her though, Lexie was excited. She felt ready and she knew that Mark would be over the moon.
“Will you be my kid’s aunt and can I be your kid’s aunt?” Jo asked, giving her a nervous smile. “I mean, I know you have Meredith and your other sister, but I don't have anybody and I want my kids to have a family, a big family.”
“Of course, I'll be your kids' aunt and you can be my kid's aunt. You're my best friend, Jo, we’re family,” Lexie said, giving Jo’s shoulders a squeeze. “Does that mean you're thinking about keeping it, if you're pregnant?”
Before Jo could respond, Stephanie came in with their labs, handing them to Lexie. Lexie had specifically asked nurse Riley to deliver her their labs themselves but Riley was never good at listening to her, or anybody else. Thankfully Stephanie was Jo's other best friend and she could keep a secret. Stephanie looked Jo up and down from when she stood in the doorway of the bathroom. “You look like shit.”
“Shut up, I'm having a crisis here,” Jo said glaring at her.
“No, you're not, you just have the stomach flu,” Lexie said, a bit disappointed that she wouldn't get the chance to be Jo's kids' aunt just yet, as she read over Jo's labs.
“Oh thank God,” Jo said as she put a hand on her chest and leaned her head back. “Wait, what about you?”
Lexie took a deep breath and looked at the piece of paper scanning for her HCG levels. She stared at the words before looking over at the numbers. Her HCG levels are in the 10,000s. She was definitely pregnant.
The whole world faded away as Lexie stared at those numbers. Thoughts about what life would be like filtered through her head. Pregnancy, birth, babies, toddlers, kids, and teenagers. Life with their baby and Mark. She could see it all now, a little baby that would be theirs. She could imagine them with Mark's blue eyes and her brown hair. She hoped they'd smile like him and have his nose.
“What's going on? Wait, did you two think you were pregnant or something?” Stephanie said, looking between the two of them.
“What, no,” Jo tried, and failed to lie to her.
“Oh my god, you did!” Stephanie said, her eyes going wide as a smile spread across her face.
“Shut up, I’m sick you can't bully me or I’ll infect you.”
“No, you stay away from me,” Stephanie said, holding up her hand and taking a step back. “I’ve seen how bad you are. I do not want that.”
“Okay, enough,” Lexie shouted, coming back to the moment as she looked between the two of them and stood up, stepping into her toll as a physician. “Dr. Edwards prep the room and get an IV going on Dr. Wilson. Jo, you're dehydrated, so I'm admitting you for fluids and rest. Give her one tablet of Ondansetron and see if she’ll keep down some water before moving to solids. Page me if there are any changes or if she can't keep anything down.”
“No, I wanna go home,” Jo protested as she tried to stand up, but swayed and turned pale before she sat back down.
“I’ll call Alex if you protest,” Lexie said, knowing that threat would get Jo to listen as she turned away. As she left the bathroom, however, Alex swung open the door to the room.
“Where’s Jo?” Alex said with a panicked look in his eyes.
“She's in the bathroom. She's okay Alex, she’s just a little dehydrated and I'm going to have Edward start an IV on her,” Lexie said, turning around as he ignored her and raced into the bathroom. The second he saw Jo, he knelt down next to her, wrapping his arms around her.
“Are you okay? One of the nurses said you were here,” Alex said, moving to pull Jo into his lap.
“She hasn't been able to keep anything down so I brought her in for fluids and rest,” Lexie explained as she watched Alex check Jo over, putting a hand on her forehead. Unlike with her, Jo didn't push him away and instead, leaned into Alex’s touch.
“I don't want to, can't I just go home?”
“Let's get you set up with some IV fluids and some nausea medication, then we can go home,” Alex said as he got up and pulled Jo up with him before picking her up and carrying her over to the bed.
Lexie watched Alex brush the hair out of Jo's face and she knew that she was leaving her friend in good hands. She had seen Alex in love before, but not like it was with Jo. They weren't just lovers, they were partners and they were good for each other. Jo let him take care of her, when she resisted everyone else. And Alex cared for her very deeply, more so than he had for anyone else. She walked over to the door before Jo caught her trying to sneak out.
“Wait, Lexie!” Jo said, reaching her arm out to her.
Lexie turned around, She couldn't help the smile that spread across her face. The second Jo saw her, she squealed and Lexie couldn't help but share in her excitement. Stephanie and Alex looked between them, confused, before Stephanie’s eyes widened and her jaw dropped as she looked at Lexie.
“You have to surprise him and not just tell him. Do it over dinner or do something cute like with a cupcake, okay!” Jo insisted as Alex looked as confused as ever as he watched their exchange.
“What’s going on?” Alex asked, but they both ignored him.
“I’ll do something cute I promise, but you just get some rest and I'll check on you later,” Lexie said before she left the room and went off in search of Mark.
She knew that Jo was right and she wanted to tell Mark in some special way. But first, she wanted to see him. Lexie walked down the hall lost in thought, before she ran into Meredith.
“Hey, Mark said you were sleeping in today. What are you doing here so early?” Meredith said, greeting Lexie with a smile as she turned around to walk beside her.
“Oh well, umm, Jo was sick so I brought her in and I figured out that I'm pregnant,” Lexie said, shrugging her shoulders as she smiled. “Surprise.”
Meredith's face instantly lit up as she grabbed Lexie's arm and pulled her down the hall away from the nurse’s station.
“Oh my god, you're pregnant!” Meredith squealed and Lexie smiled letting out a laugh of excitement as she pulled her in for a hug. “I'm going to be an auntie! How long have you known? Have you told Mark yet?”
“I've known for 2 and 1/2 minutes. I haven't told Mark, and yes you're going to be an auntie,” Lexie said with a smile as Meredith laughed.
“Well you have to tell Mark soon,” Meredith said with a nod. “And with the new house you guys are moving into, it’s perfect timing.”
“Jo said to do something cute, tell him with cupcakes, but I don't know how to present a piece of paper to him and make it cute,” Lexie said, looking down at her labs in her hand and folding them carefully to put away in her pocket.
“Jo Wilson knew before me!” Meredith said, frowning as she smacked Lexie’s arm.
“Don't hit me. I'm pregnant,” Lexie said, rubbing her arm. “Jo knew because we both thought we were pregnant and so we got our labs together.”
“Jo’s pregnant?!”
“No, she just has the flu.”
“Oh thank god,” Meredith said, putting a hand on her chest and letting out a breath of relief. “The world does not need another evil spawn right now.”
“Mer that's so mean,” Lexie said, smacking Meredith’s arm.
“What, it's true,” Meredith said, before linking their arms and leading her down the hall. “Come on. Jo was right, it has to be cute and I'm sure April knows the perfect place to get the cupcakes.”
……………………………………………………………………
Lexie waved to Meredith as she drove off, having dropped her off at the new house with one box of cupcakes. She and Meredith had talked before they both got pulled into work. Despite her promise to meet Mark for lunch she found herself avoiding him, lest she spill her secret right away. Finally, the day had ended and Meredith helped her with their plan before Meredith dropped her off at their new house.
The bungalow was a little blue house with a stone porch in the Queen Anne neighborhood. It was just a few blocks away from Meredith’s old house and a five minute drive to the hospital. It was the perfect house, with four bedrooms and an open floor plan kitchen and living room with a decent-sized backyard that would be perfect for Sophia and their future kids. Lexie smiled as she thought of the baby she was carrying growing up in this house. She glanced at Mark's text again confirming that he was only a few minutes away as she sat on the porch stairs.
She didn't have to wait long as Mark's car soon pulled up into the driveway. He got out of the car and did a little hop as he jogged over to her. His smile was so bright and happy as his eyes crinkled. Lexie bit her lips as she watched him, trying to keep her happiness contained until she told him. She knew he was going to be so happy when she told him. It was the one thing that he’d wanted the entire time they had been together.
“Hey,” Mark said, bending down to give her a quick peck before he sat next to her on the steps and put his arm around her.
Lexie leaned into him and he kissed her cheek again as his beard, mustache, and goatee scratched her cheek, but she didn’t mind. “Hi.”
“So what's up?” Mark said, setting her with the look and a single raised eyebrow. “And don't tell me it's about the tile in the kitchen, I know you, Lexie. What is going on?”
His expression changed from amused to concerned as he studied her face, but she just smiled and handed him the box of cupcakes. Mark raised his eyebrow again, but just opened the box. Inside were two cupcakes, one blue and one pink with a little pair of fondant baby bottles and booties with a little banner that said ‘Hello Daddy.’ Mark's jaw dropped as he stared down at them.
“I’m pregnant, we are going to have a baby!” Lexie said, letting a smile fill her face, yet her voice seemed too loud against his quiet shock.
“For real you're pregnant?” Mark asked, looking up at her in astonishment as he reached out and placed a hand on her stomach. Lexie just smiled and nodded as she put her hand over his. “Oh my God, we're having a baby!”
Mark smiled so beautifully big and wide and his excitement seemed to radiate off of him. He quickly set down the cupcakes and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her, the excitement between them like fireworks on her lips. She wrapped her arms around his neck and his hands settled on her waist. They kissed for a moment before Lexie pulled back and leaned her head against his forehead.
“Are you excited?” Lexie asked, already knowing the answer.
“Yes!” Mark said quickly, pecking her lips again. “But are you? This wasn't planned, I mean, I know we talked about having kids soon, but I want to make sure you're ready for this, Lexie.”
“Yes,” Lexie said, letting a smile slip across her cheeks as she let out a breath of excitement. “I’m so happy and so excited to have a baby with you.”
For the longest time, she wasn't ready to have a family with Mark. When they started dating she was just twenty-four and she wanted to enjoy life and have her career. Mark was at a different stage in his life, he was ready to settle down and have a family. The two of them clashed on this, but now they were finally on the same page. Mark agreed to wait until she was an attending to try for kids and Lexie was ready to have them. She had her career and her 20s were behind her. They had settled into their lives together and everything was good between them. And now they had their baby.
“This is going to be so great Lexie,” Mark said, smiling so wide and his eyes sparkled like the stars above her. “We're going to have a baby. You and me as a family. My whole life, I watched my friends marry and have families of their own, Derek and Meredith, Callie and Arizona, hell, even Jackson got married before we did. But the day you agreed to marry me and this day, the day you told me we were having a baby are the happiest days of my life. They’re worth the wait and I can't wait to have even more happy days with you.”
“I love you, Mark Sloan,” Lexie said leaning in to give him a quick kiss. “Even if you're the sappiest person I have ever met.”
Mark laughed as Lexie giggled and she leaned against him. She picked up the cupcakes and took off the decorations before she handed one to him and grabbed the other one for herself. As Mark took a bite of the cupcake he got frosting all over his big nose and she reached out to wipe the frosting away. Lexie smiled as she studied his face, she loved his nose, his eyes, and the way he smiled. She'd be delighted if their baby looked exactly like him.
They finished the cupcakes and Mark kissed the frosting off her lips before pulling her up as they walked to the car. It had been a long day, full of surprises and excitement. Lexie leaned her head on his chest as Mark led her around to the passenger side door and opened it for her. He grabbed her hand as he helped her in. Then he quickly did her seatbelt for her before jogging around to the driver's side and getting in.
“Alright, Dr. Grey-Sloan, ready to head back to the frat house?” Mark said turning on the car and turning on the radio to her favorite pop station.
“Why, yes I am Dr. Sloan,” Lexie said with a giggle as Mark sent her one last wink before he turned his eyes to the road and drove them home.
Lexie turned up the volume and started singing along. She had just enough time to listen to a few songs before they pulled up to the frat house. Again Mark came around to her side of the car and opened her door for her. He took her hand and wrapped an arm around her waist as they walked inside.
They walked into the house and heard the TV on. Lexie walked into the living room to see Jo and Alex lounging on the couch. Alex was upright with his feet propped up on the coffee table. While Jo was laying sideways across his lap as he held her. As they came in, Jo picked up her head to greet them.
“Hey, you so did you tell him yet?” Jo asked with a smile, despite how tired she looked.
“I did!” Lexie said as the two of them shared a pair of exciting smiles.
“Are you going to tell me what this is all about?” Alex asked, looking between the two of them with a raised eyebrow.
“Nope,” Jo said as she glanced up at him with a smile and Lexie giggled.
“We’ll tell you soon enough, Alex,” Lexie said with a smirk, looking back at Mark.
Alex just sighed and shook his head, but he was placated when Jo reached up and kissed his cheek. Lexie went over to sit next to Jo, but Mark quickly intervened by pulling Lexie back with the hand around her waist.
“No way am I letting you get anywhere near… that,” Mark said, gesturing to Jo with his hand.
“I'm not that sick,” Jo said with an eye roll.
“Yes, you are. You two should definitely stay away,” Alex said, running his fingers across her forehead and pulling back the sweaty little hairs that stuck to her skin.
“He's lying,” Jo said, with a yawn as she covered her mouth.
“Sure he is,” Mark said sarcastically as he and Alex shared a look and Lexie laughed.
“We should be getting to bed anyway,” Alex said, as he turned off the TV with the remote, then stood up and slipped out from under her.
“But I want to finish the season. We only have two episodes left,” Jo protested, with a pout.
“We can finish it tomorrow,” Alex said before quickly scooping her up and carrying her bridal style.
To Lexie's surprise, Jo barely protested. Instead, she laid her head on his shoulder and closed her eyes. Lexie waved goodbye to them as they walked past. Jo waved back before they disappeared up the stairs.
Lexie then let out a side as she went to sit on the couch before Mark pulled her back again. “Wait, I've got to spray it down with Lysol or something before I'm letting you anywhere near that. On second thought, maybe we should consider getting a hotel until Wilson's better.”
“Don't be ridiculous,” Lexie said with an eye roll, but she walked to the kitchen instead.
“I'm not being ridiculous, I'm protecting the mother of my child,” Mark said as he followed her into the kitchen where she saw Owen and Christina eating takeout at the island.
“Hey you guys,” Lexie greeted them as they quickly greeted her back.
“How come you guys are back so late?” Cristina asked as she took another bite of the udon noodles.
“Oh we just stopped by the house to look over things for a second,” Mark said, with a bigger grin than he should’ve had as he looked over at her.
“It's pretty late for that,” Owen said, but they just both shrugged and Cristina and Owen seemed to accept their answer.
Lexie went over to the fridge staring at it for a second before Mark came up behind her. “Anything strike your fancy? If not, could I make you dinner?”
“Oh butter pasta sounds really good,” Lexie, in excitement as she turned around and went to the cabinet to grab the box of pasta.
“Pasta it is,” Mark said as he grabbed the butter and parmesan cheese from the refrigerator to get started the meal for her.
“Are you going to cook for me every night?” Lexie asked with a smile as she handed him the box of pasta.
“Well I’ve got to make sure you stay healthy,” Mark said as the two of them shared a smile and their eyes danced with excitement.
“What’s going on between you two?” Christina asked, giving them a weary look.
“Nothing,” Lexie said, barely giving Cristina a glance.
“Just a whole lot of love,” Mark said with a smile, his eyes soft and bright as he stared at her wholeheartedly and Lexie could only smile back with the same loving look.

Armored Core Highlights: Armored Core 1
Been feeling for a while now like doing a recap of some of the most exciting levels/fights/whatever I’ve experienced in Armored Core up to now, so it’s time to finally put this to paper.
Mission: Destroy “Justice”
Tumblr media
For me, the most memorable level of Armored Core 1 was Justice. By this point in the story, the rampant warfare between the shadowy megacorporations Chrome and Murakumo Millennium had come to a climax. Initial conflicts were conducted by means of proxy warfare using terrorists cells funded and equipped by each company to undermine the other’s assets. Relatively early on, it becomes apparent that the Earth Environment Restoration Committee (of your your contractors for missions) which had been exploring military facilities left behind from before the apocalyptic war of the Great Destruction was not exactly doing it for the altruistic purposes of restoring ancient technology for rebuilding civilization like that claimed. Rather, it’s eventually pieced together that they are yet another asset of Murakumo Millennium, and have been the corporation’s primary means of returning seized pre-war military assets to working order.
After tensions between the two companies erupt into open warfare, one of the game’s routes has you spearhead a number of operations backed by Chrome operatives to seize Murakumo’s lunar base, which was being used as a staging and shipping point for the restoration of “Justice.” Justice is revealed to be a colossal satellite cannon that was among the primary means of ravaging the Earth back in the Great Destruction, and its activation could potentially spell a second doomsday scenario if Murakumo is left unchecked in their ambitions to conquer Earth.
Tumblr media
For this mission, you are dispatched to infiltrate and dismantle Justice during a state of dire emergency: Murakumo is already preparing for the initial firing sequence. Therefore your insertion method is the most direct: your ass gets sent down the barrel of the gun to destroy the firing mechanism on a time limit before the colossal laser blows you to oblivion.
Tumblr media
The entirety of this level takes place inside the barrel, a large tube separated by ribbed sections, each ‘rib’ isolating one segment of the barrel from another with a force field. There are a number of supplementary power conduits in side tunnels of the barrel that you can disable to buy more time on the countdown, but the force fields can only be disabled by blowing them away with sustained force. Each new segment of the barrel contains more and more enemies raining hell to stop you from destroying the gun, and to make matters worse some of the side tunnels require a bit of platforming to get into. Anyone who’s beaten AC1 can probably vouch that the game’s platforming segments handle like buttered ass, but this still is a candle against the sun compared to what the game asks you to do in the later mission “Destroy Floating Mines.”
Tumblr media
At the end of the gun’s barrel lies the glowing core of the central firing mechanism you need to beat the hell out of to complete the mission. For my first time trying this, I’d spent a lot of time bumblefucking around trying to get into the vents, so I ended up trying to ignore the enemies entirely and focus on blowing through the force fields. By the end of it, the timer was almost up and I was in a double race against both the clock and against the enemies piling on damage in an attempt to stop me from shutting the thing down.
All in all it was stressful, but it was a very fun mission in how it structured its objective and progression toward it. The setpiece of a mecha plumbing down the barrel of an orbital death ray to stop it from within is some hardcore action shit, you can’t deny how cool that is.
Some might wonder why I’d pick this over the final boss, Nine Ball. The thing is, Nine Ball in AC1 wasn’t fun in the slightest. He’s only really a fight in Master of Arena; in AC1 he’s just a one-sided massacre that exploits his Human Plus cheat ability allowing him to hammer you with a grenade launcher while moving and flying, inside an arena that’s a vertical shaft when vertical aiming and targeting in early Armored Core was frankly dogshit. And you had to do this twice, as there was a second Nine Ball in a second, virtually identical Death Star reactor shaft!
That fight left me feeling like I’d gotten a pool cue shoved up my ass, so I’m not exactly eager to fight Hustler One again anytime soon.

In reply to Anon: Because of water leakage, mold & structural damage, the disaster at my new house is covered by the previous owners' home insurance...so far. I have made it clear to the contractors that I am not responsible for the cost of anything. I'm only being inconvenienced.
What held up progress was the plumbers not being willing to re-enter the crawlspace until the restoration teams removed all toxic elements. Inhaled insulation fibers can cause cancer, ya'know, not to mention people who aren't allergic can be sickened by it.
One of the restoration guys came by today to install a new subfloor in the master bath that ought to seal off the mold from entering the house. He said the crawlspace was clear but not quite dried out. I told him, not clear enough for the plumbers & suggested they use a shop vac to suck up remaining fibers & standing water. He agreed they would.
It's a good thing I flipped houses back in the 70's & learned how to work w/ contractors. I'm reasonable, haven't cried or cussed, begged or threatened. I told the plumber I imagined all the joins & joints would need to be replaced after being submerged in water for only-gawd-knows how long. He said, nah, it would be quicker, easier & more cost-efficient to replace the whole plumbing system. Apparently, they come almost pre-assembled for manufactured homes. I replied, "You need to convince the insurance people, not me. I just want it done as soon as possible." He agreed, "Yes, mam."
So that's where I'm at. The Park's maintenance man comes by w/ a bucket of water every day to sit by the toilet. I've got cheap 5-liter water dispensers for drinking & brushing my teeth. Now, if I can only find a washrag, I'll get it wet, wring it out, & zap it warm in the microwave to wash my face. Otherwise, I'll be taking showers once a week at my daughter's house & get my laundry done.
The main inconvenience is the delay in the improvements I planned to do. Ya can't paint walls without water to wash your brushes & hands. And I can't have someone from Bathfitters come by to give me estimate until we can both breathe in both bathrooms.
By the way, the total cost so far is $17,000! Oh. My. Gosh.

Bathroom Renovation Mistakes to Avoid for a Stress-Free Remodel
When planning a bathroom renovation in Oakville, you might be filled with excitement about transforming your space into something new and functional. However, a smooth bathroom renovation requires careful planning and attention to detail. Mistakes can easily occur during the process, leading to delays, budget overruns, and unsatisfactory results. To help you avoid common pitfalls, this guide outlines the most frequent mistakes homeowners make and offers solutions for a stress-free renovation.
At Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., we specialize in creating beautiful, functional spaces, including bathrooms. Our team understands the importance of proper planning and execution to deliver the best results for every bathroom renovation in Oakville. Whether you’re upgrading a small guest bathroom or revamping your master bathroom, steering clear of these mistakes will ensure your project is completed on time and within budget.
1. Skipping the Planning Phase
One of the most common mistakes in any renovation, especially a bathroom renovation in Oakville, is skipping the planning phase. Homeowners often rush into the process without fully considering their needs, preferences, and budget. Without a clear plan, it’s easy to overlook critical details, leading to costly changes during the project.
What to Do Instead
Start by assessing what you want from your new bathroom. Do you need more storage? Are you looking to upgrade the fixtures? Is there a specific style or theme you want to follow? Take the time to create a comprehensive plan that includes all your preferences and goals.
Additionally, work with a professional contractor like Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., who can help you organize your ideas into a workable plan. A detailed plan will serve as a roadmap, ensuring that every aspect of the bathroom renovation in Oakville is considered before construction begins.
2. Underestimating the Budget
Budget overruns are a frequent issue during renovations. Homeowners often underestimate the total cost of materials, labor, and unforeseen issues. In a bathroom renovation in Oakville, the expenses can quickly add up, particularly if you are making structural changes or upgrading plumbing fixtures.
What to Do Instead
Be realistic about the costs involved in a bathroom renovation. It’s essential to set a budget that covers all expenses, including a contingency for unexpected costs (typically 10-15% of your total budget). Consult with a trusted company like Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. to get accurate quotes and expert guidance on how to allocate your budget effectively. By setting a clear budget and sticking to it, you’ll avoid stress and prevent financial surprises during the renovation.
3. Choosing the Wrong Materials
Another common mistake is choosing the wrong materials for the bathroom environment. Since bathrooms are exposed to moisture, heat, and frequent use, it’s essential to select materials that can withstand these conditions. Opting for low-quality or unsuitable materials can lead to problems such as mold, warping, and early wear and tear.
What to Do Instead
When planning your bathroom renovation in Oakville, focus on high-quality materials specifically designed for bathrooms. This includes moisture-resistant flooring, waterproof wall coverings, and durable fixtures. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. can help you select the best materials that balance aesthetics, durability, and functionality. Choosing the right materials from the start will ensure your new bathroom lasts for years without issues.
4. Poor Ventilation
Poor ventilation is a problem that can lead to a host of issues, including mold growth, peeling paint, and moisture damage. Many homeowners overlook the importance of ventilation when planning their bathroom renovation in Oakville.
What to Do Instead
Make sure your new bathroom is equipped with proper ventilation, either through windows or an exhaust fan. A high-quality exhaust fan is essential for removing excess moisture and preventing mold buildup. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. recommends installing an appropriately sized fan for the space, ensuring it’s powerful enough to keep the bathroom dry and fresh. Addressing ventilation issues early on can prevent costly repairs down the line.
5. Neglecting Lighting
Lighting is a crucial element in any bathroom renovation, yet it’s often one of the most neglected aspects. Insufficient lighting can make your bathroom feel cramped and uninviting, while poor placement can cast unflattering shadows.
What to Do Instead
During your bathroom renovation in Oakville, prioritize a well-thought-out lighting plan. Combine different types of lighting, such as ambient, task, and accent lighting, to create a balanced and functional space. Task lighting near the vanity is essential for grooming activities like shaving or applying makeup. Consider using dimmable lights to adjust the brightness based on the time of day and your mood.
At Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., we offer expert advice on choosing the right lighting fixtures and placement to enhance the overall look and feel of your bathroom. Proper lighting can make a small bathroom appear larger and improve the functionality of the space.
6. Ignoring Storage Needs
Lack of storage is a common complaint after a bathroom renovation. Homeowners often focus so much on aesthetics that they forget to consider practical storage solutions. Without enough storage, your bathroom can quickly become cluttered, reducing its overall appeal and functionality.
What to Do Instead
Plan for storage from the beginning of your bathroom renovation in Oakville. Consider built-in shelves, cabinets, and vanity storage to keep your bathroom organized. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. offers custom storage solutions tailored to your specific needs, ensuring that your bathroom is both stylish and functional. With ample storage, you can keep your bathroom tidy and clutter-free, making it more enjoyable to use.
7. DIYing Complex Projects
While it’s tempting to save money by handling parts of the renovation yourself, taking on complex tasks without the necessary skills can lead to costly mistakes. Electrical work, plumbing, and tiling require professional expertise to ensure they’re done correctly.
What to Do Instead
For a successful bathroom renovation in Oakville, trust the professionals. At Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc., we have a team of skilled contractors who specialize in bathroom renovations. Hiring professionals ensures that the work is done to code and meets industry standards. This not only saves you time and effort but also guarantees that your renovation will be completed safely and efficiently.
8. Overlooking Accessibility Features
As homeowners plan their bathroom renovation in Oakville, they sometimes overlook the importance of accessibility features. These features are not only for the elderly or disabled; they can make the bathroom more comfortable and safer for everyone in the household.
What to Do Instead
Incorporate accessibility features such as grab bars, non-slip flooring, and a walk-in shower. These elements can be seamlessly integrated into your design to enhance both safety and style. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. specializes in creating accessible and beautiful bathrooms that accommodate the needs of all family members, regardless of age or ability.
9. Forgetting About Future Resale Value
Some homeowners get carried away with personal preferences during their bathroom renovation in Oakville and make design choices that are too niche or extravagant for future buyers.
What to Do Instead
Consider how your bathroom renovation will affect your home’s resale value. Opt for neutral designs and timeless fixtures that will appeal to a broad audience. Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc. can help you balance your personal style with design choices that enhance your home’s marketability. By keeping the future in mind, you’ll create a bathroom that not only suits your needs but also adds value to your property.
10. Not Hiring a Reputable Contractor
Perhaps the most significant mistake you can make during a bathroom renovation in Oakville is not hiring a reputable contractor. Without the right team, you risk poor workmanship, project delays, and budget overruns.
What to Do Instead
Partner with a trusted company like Altima Kitchens and Closets Inc.. With years of experience in bathroom renovations, we guarantee high-quality work, exceptional service, and a stress-free experience. From planning to completion, we’ll guide you through every step of the renovation, ensuring that your bathroom turns out exactly as you envisioned.

How Long Does a Bathroom Renovation Take? A Realistic Timeline
Bathroom renovations are one of the most popular home improvement projects due to their potential to increase both property value and personal comfort. However, when embarking on a bathroom renovation, it’s essential to set realistic expectations about the timeline. While many homeowners might dream of a quick fix, bathroom remodels can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, depending on the scope of work. Let’s explore the factors influencing the renovation timeline and what a realistic schedule looks like.
Tumblr media
1. Factors Influencing the Timeline
Several variables can impact the length of a bathroom renovation, ranging from the size of the bathroom to the complexity of the design. Here are some of the main factors to consider:
a) Size of the Bathroom
A small powder room might take much less time to renovate than a master bathroom. Larger bathrooms typically require more labor, materials, and time.
b) Scope of Work
Are you just replacing the fixtures, or are you doing a complete overhaul, including new plumbing, flooring, and electrical work? The more extensive the project, the longer it will take.
c) Materials Availability
Custom fixtures, tiles, or specialty materials can delay the project if they are not readily available. Always account for shipping times, especially for imported or custom-made items.
d) Professional vs. DIY
If you’re hiring professionals, they can often complete the work faster. However, if you’re doing a DIY project, the timeline may be longer based on your experience and availability.
e) Permits and Inspections
For significant renovations, you may need permits, and the work will need to pass inspections. Waiting for approvals can add days or even weeks to the timeline.
f) Unforeseen Issues
Older homes may have hidden problems like mold, outdated wiring, or plumbing that isn’t up to code. Discovering these issues mid-renovation can add considerable time as you may need to hire specialists to address them.
2. Pre-Renovation: Planning and Design (1-4 Weeks)
Before any actual work begins, the planning phase is crucial. This includes budgeting, designing, and ordering materials. Here’s what to expect during this stage:
a) Budgeting and Conceptualizing (1-2 Weeks)
Homeowners should first set a realistic budget and decide on the scale of the renovation. This phase includes:
Determining how much to spend on materials, labor, and unexpected expenses.
Deciding between a partial renovation or a full remodel.
b) Hiring a Contractor (1-2 Weeks)
If you’re hiring a professional, you’ll need time to interview potential contractors, review quotes, and check references. The process of finding a reputable contractor can take one to two weeks.
c) Design and Material Selection (2-4 Weeks)
Once the budget is set and the contractor is selected, you’ll collaborate on the design. This involves:
Finalizing layout changes.
Selecting tiles, fixtures, and finishes.
Ordering materials (be prepared for lead times on special or imported items).
3. Demolition (2-5 Days)
The renovation officially begins with demolition. Depending on the size of your bathroom and the extent of the changes, this process can take anywhere from two to five days. During demolition, the following tasks will take place:
Removing old tiles, fixtures, cabinetry, and flooring.
Gutting walls if new plumbing or electrical work is needed.
Hauling away debris.
While demolition can seem quick, the complexity of removing old materials, especially if they are well-built, can slow down the process.
4. Rough-In Work: Plumbing, Electrical, and Framing (1-2 Weeks)
The rough-in phase involves installing or modifying the plumbing, electrical, and framing for the new layout. This is one of the most crucial steps because any changes to the underlying structure must be completed before any finishes can be applied.
a) Plumbing
If you’re moving fixtures like the toilet, shower, or sink, plumbers will need to reroute the pipes. Even if you’re keeping the layout, you may need to upgrade plumbing systems, especially in older homes. This can take 2-4 days depending on complexity.
b) Electrical
For electrical work, contractors will install wiring for new lights, outlets, and fans. The electrician may also add ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) to meet code requirements. This phase can take 1-3 days.
c) Framing and Structural Changes
If walls are being moved or new windows/doors are added, the framing will take place at this stage. The framing work may take several days if the layout is being significantly altered.
5. Inspections (1-2 Days)
After rough-in work is complete, local building authorities may need to inspect the plumbing and electrical work to ensure it meets code requirements. Inspections are often quick, but scheduling them can take some time, which may add an extra day or two to the project.
6. Drywall and Painting (3-5 Days)
Once the rough-in and inspections are complete, the next step is installing a drywall and applying the initial coat of paint. This phase can be broken down as follows:
a) Drywall Installation
Drywall is hung, mudded, and sanded to create smooth walls. This can take up to three days depending on drying times between coats.
b) Painting
The walls are primed and painted before the final fixtures are installed. Depending on how many coats are required, painting may take 1-2 days.
7. Flooring and Tile Installation (1-2 Weeks)
The installation of new flooring and wall tiles can take a considerable amount of time, especially if you’re using intricate designs or patterns.
a) Flooring
Whether it’s tile, vinyl, or stone, the flooring installation can take 2-5 days depending on the material. Larger tiles generally take less time than small, mosaic-style tiles.
b) Shower and Wall Tiles
Tiling the shower and surrounding walls typically takes longer than flooring because of the precision required. This can take 5-7 days depending on the complexity and size of the tiles.
8. Installing Fixtures and Cabinets (3-7 Days)
Once the surfaces are ready, it’s time to install the fixtures and cabinetry. This phase includes:
Installing the sink, toilet, bathtub, and shower fixtures.
Fitting cabinetry and vanities.
Adding mirrors, towel racks, and other accessories.
Depending on how custom or intricate the cabinetry and fixtures are, this can take anywhere from 3 to 7 days.
9. Final Touches and Inspection (1-3 Days)
The final days of the renovation are reserved for touch-ups, final inspections, and cleaning. Contractors will:
Address any small issues like paint touch-ups or grout cleaning.
Ensure all fixtures are functioning properly.
Complete any required final inspections from the local building authority.
10. A Realistic Timeline Summary
Planning and design: 1-4 weeks
Demolition: 2-5 days
Rough-in work: 1-2 weeks
Inspections: 1-2 days
Drywall and painting: 3-5 days
Flooring and tile installation: 1-2 weeks
Fixtures and cabinetry: 3-7 days
Final touches: 1-3 days
Total timeline: 4-8 weeks
Conclusion
While bathroom renovations can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months, a realistic timeline for most projects is about 4-8 weeks. Factors like bathroom size, material selection, and the availability of contractors can impact this schedule. Planning well, hiring experienced professionals, and being flexible with the timeline will help ensure your bathroom renovation runs smoothly.

Winning the Local Search Game: Effective Local SEO Techniques for Service Based Businesses in 2024
In today’s digital landscape, service businesses must have a strong online presence to attract local customers. Local SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a powerful strategy to ensure that your business appears prominently in search results when potential customers look for services in their area. For service businesses, mastering local SEO can mean the difference between thriving and being overlooked. Here are key local SEO techniques to help service businesses stand out and attract more local clients.
1. Optimize Your Google Business Profile
One of the most effective local SEO tools is Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business). This free tool allows you to manage how your business appears in Google Search and Maps. To optimize your profile:
Complete Your Profile: Ensure all information is accurate and up-to-date, including your business name, address, phone number, website, and business hours.
Select the Right Categories: Choose the most relevant categories for your services to help Google understand what your business offers.
Add Photos and Videos: High-quality images and videos of your services, staff, and location can enhance your profile and attract more clicks.
Collect Reviews: Encourage satisfied customers to leave positive reviews. Respond to reviews to show that you value customer feedback, which can also improve your local search rankings.
2. Target Local Keywords
Keyword research is essential for any SEO strategy, and it’s particularly important for local SEO. Focus on keywords that reflect the services you offer and the locations you serve. For example, if you’re a plumber in Austin, Texas, target keywords like “Austin plumber,” “emergency plumbing Austin,” or “plumbing services near me.”
To find effective local keywords:
Use Google’s Keyword Planner: This tool can help you identify popular search terms related to your business and location.
Check Competitors’ Keywords: Analyze which keywords your local competitors rank for and incorporate similar ones into your strategy.
Incorporate Long-Tail Keywords: Long-tail keywords (e.g., “best roofing contractor in San Diego”) often have less competition and can attract highly targeted traffic.
3. Create Location-Specific Content
Content that speaks directly to your local audience is key for improving your local SEO. This can include:
Location Pages: If your business serves multiple areas, create a dedicated page for each location. Each page should include relevant keywords, service details, customer testimonials, and unique content that reflects the specific needs of that area.
Local Blog Posts: Write about local events, news, or community involvement. For instance, a landscaping company might blog about seasonal tips for lawn care in their region. This not only helps with SEO but also establishes your business as a local authority.
4. Ensure Consistent NAP Information
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number, and consistency across the web is crucial for local SEO. Your NAP information should be identical on your website, Google Business Profile, social media pages, and online directories. Inconsistent information can confuse search engines and potential customers, leading to lower rankings and missed opportunities.
To maintain consistency:
Audit Your Online Listings: Regularly check that your NAP information is correct on all platforms.
Use a Citation Management Tool: Tools like Moz Local or BrightLocal can help you manage and update your business listings across various directories.
5. Build Local Citations and Backlinks
Local citations are mentions of your business on other websites, such as online directories, review sites, and local blogs. These citations help Google verify your business’s legitimacy and relevance, boosting your local search rankings.
To build local citations:
Submit to Online Directories: List your business on reputable directories like Yelp, Yellow Pages, and industry-specific sites.
Get Featured in Local Media: Reach out to local newspapers, blogs, or radio stations for features or interviews. These not only increase your visibility but also generate valuable backlinks to your website.
6. Leverage Social Media for Local Engagement
Social media platforms are valuable for local SEO, especially when used to engage with your community. Regularly post updates, promotions, and local events on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Tag your location in posts and encourage local customers to share their experiences.
Join Local Groups and Communities: Participate in local Facebook groups, Nextdoor, or LinkedIn communities related to your industry. This can increase your visibility among potential customers and drive traffic to your website.
Conclusion
Local SEO is a vital strategy for service businesses looking to attract more customers from their surrounding areas. By optimizing your Google Business Profile, targeting local keywords, creating location-specific content, ensuring consistent NAP information, building local citations, and engaging on social media, you can enhance your local online presence. Implementing these techniques will help your service business climb local search rankings, ultimately driving more traffic, leads, and revenue.
