Matar Paneer Thai Curry
This Thai-Indian fusion curry is a perfect weeknight meal as it comes together in minutes.
This Thai-Indian fusion curry is a perfect weeknight meal as it comes together in minutes. When the classic Indian combination of matar paneer (green peas and Indian cottage cheese) is cooked into a spicy and flavorful Thai curry, this amazing dish is born. Indian and Thai are two of my favorite cuisines. While trying new recipes and coming up with new ideas, I just thought the other day ‘How…

Lesson 15, Task 2: What has influenced me?
This course has helped me to understand just how much my life has been influenced by other cultures. The area I live in is somewhat of a melting pot of cultures, so throughout my life I have had the pleasure of experiencing each and every one of them.
Originating in Thailand and steeped in Thai culture, Muay Thai is a striking martial art that is similar to kickboxing. I have studied it for the last six years, making it a large part of my life and have gone as far as competing in multiple sanctioned fights. As a result, I have picked up Thai folkways that have extended into my everyday life. In Thailand, the way to greet someone is to put your hands together as if you are praying, bow, and say “sawadee khap,” meaning both hello and goodbye. Whenever meeting people whom I know from my gym, I will always do this as I first see them, and also upon parting.                                      (Actually me in the picture!)

The food I enjoy has been largely influenced by the cultures that I grew up around. The Danforth is a source of all kinds of food from other cultures. I have eaten at Japanese, Greek, Thai, Indian, Chinese, Tibetan, Mexican and more cultural restaurants in my lifetime along the Danforth. As a result, my favourite dishes include matar paneer, a fried Indian cheese, Saganaki, fried Greek cheese, vegetarian fried rice from Japanese restaurants, and curry chicken from Thai restaurants. Unfortunately, I didn’t build a tolerance to spicy food growing up, so while I enjoy these dishes, it requires me to drink a lot of water!

Like many people, my fashion was taken from fellow students and friends. It was most likely formed as a result of the pop culture influence on my generation. A common practice of my generation is to let your pants hang just below the hips, known as “low-riding.” On multiple occasions, I have been told that this derives from prison culture, and symbolizes something that is better off not describing. Parts of pop culture aimed at young people, such as the rap and hip hop industry, idolize prison as a test of one’s toughness, so it makes sense that that influence has made its way  into my life.

I have been lucky to have architecture from all around the world in my neighbourhood. My favourite are the churches because of their architectural differences, but similar because of the value that each culture places on it. Within ten minutes walking distance from my house, I can walk to Greektown, Chinatown, Little India, and a prominent middle eastern/south asian community. Each of them are traditional architecture from their respective cultures, and are quite beautiful.

A large part of my childhood was watching martial arts films. These included Chinese movie stars such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, and Jet Li. It would make sense that this was a catalyst for my love of martial arts. Many of these films took place in China or bordering countries around it. I started off martial arts as a child studying  karate, taekwondo, and kung fu, which originate from Japan, Korea, and China, respectively. These martial arts are prevalent in North America because of films that portray them. Another form of entertainment I enjoy that’s steeped in other cultures is video games. One of the largest exporters of video games is Japan, which led to it having it’s own genre, Japanese Role-Playing Games (JRPG). Many of my generation, including myself, grew up playing Japanese games that have had a huge impact on western culture, such as Pokemon, Super Mario, and Legend of Zelda.

indian curry all the way, chana masala get in me
I think I’m going to have to agree with you on Indian curry. I LOVE chana masala, chickpeas are the best. Also love tikka masala, matar paneer, korma.. all of it basically haha. But then I also have a soft spot for Thai yellow curry. That’s what I’m eating right now, hence what sparked this whole thing 🍛
