Comfort Films Tag
Rules: List 7 of your comfort movies, then tag 7 people.
Tagged by @callipigio
1 - Shelter (2007)
Tumblr media
I often joke around here about how I’ve been watching queer cinema for over half of my life at this point, and it’s easy to recommend this film. This is a coming of age film about a guy who gave up art school to become the primary breadwinner and caregiver for his family. However, when the older brother of his best friend returns to their town to collect himself, our artist and he reconnect and find something special between them. Great use of a young actor in this shores up the caregiving aspects.
I’m probably going to rewatch it now. Because it was produced by Here! TV, you can only legally watch it via a subscription to their platform. I own it on DVD because I fell in love with it and knew I needed to keep it forever.
2 - Big Eden (2000)
Tumblr media
Big Eden. Oh, Big Eden. This is the film equivalent of a warm blanket and a tight hug. It’s about an artist named Henry Hart, who is preparing for a big exhibition in New York when he’s called back home to Montana because his uncle has had a stroke. We are greatest with the most queer-friendly town to ever exist as Henry manages his old angst about his straight best friend as the local general store owner also secretly pursues him. It’s absolutely lovely.
3 - The Blues Brothers (1980)
Tumblr media
Luna has great taste, because this is one of the best films ever made. What was originally just an SNL bit turns into a fun road film about getting the band back together so that two brothers can raise enough money to pay the back taxes owed by the orphanage they grew up in. We also run over Illinois nazis in this movie and demolish dozens of cop cars. Cab Calloway, James Brown, Carrie Fisher, Chaka Khan, Paul Reubens, and Aretha Franklin are in it. John Candy orders orange whips. This is the kind of film I would watch with my dad any time it was on.
4 - Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Tumblr media
This is one of the most man movies ever made. I don’t know any woman who wants to sit down and watch this film, but me and boys will spend an entire afternoon on this film in a heartbeat. The sexual tension between Russell Crowe’s and Paul Bettany’s characters goes unremarked on this website in a way that lets you know for sure this hellsite is dominated by femmes, because those two have definitely fucked. At least twice. It’s 1805 and oceans have become battlefields!
5 - Clue (1985)
Tumblr media
A movie based on the board game of the same name should not have been this good, but it instead goes on to become a camp masterpiece. Many people will end up remembering Tim Curry for Rocky Horror or even Muppet Treasure Island, but this is still one of his favorite performances for me. This film is batshit and I love it.
6 - Camp (2003)
Tumblr media
Speaking of camp films, let’s talk about one of the best of all time. I know we often talk about the bad singing in Thai BL, but I unironically love all of the musical theater in this film. I regularly listen to this soundtrack, and have been for over 15 years. It’s a film about a bunch of weird theater kids who get to escape the bullying and hellishness of their lives for a few weeks during the summer, where they get to put on a bunch of classic plays. It’s so camp. I love this film because it was difficult for me to find queer films that had happy components with them, and this little movie has a wide array of queer kids in it.
7 - Make The Yuletide Gay (2009)
Tumblr media
This was the first queer film I ever watched that had a happy ending that was also a comedy. Prior to this, I think I had watched Beautiful Thing (1996), Edge of Seventeen (1998), Get Real (1998), and Bent (1997). Most of those films ended resolved or sad. Yuletide is a silly little gay film of almost nonstop innuendo about a guy who goes back into the closet when he returns home for Christmas, but hijinks ensue when his boyfriend shows up unexpectedly. It’s an annual watch for me around the holidays, and I usually host people for it.
Also, Adamo Ruggiero is in it! He played Marco on Degrassi: The Next Generation.
This was fun! I think most folks have been tagged that I know, but I’ll tag @warningtothecurious. If anyone else does this, please tag me back if you do this! I want to know what films you all return to.

not bl related but I was too curious. What dishes can you whip up for 10-12 people!?
heh heh
Cheesy potato casserole (I do mine with a rosemary rarebit-based cheese sauce) + whatever meat or veg is lying around.
Chicken (or veg) enchilada casserole - made with corn tortillas.
Any kind of noodle casserole (chicken, mushroom, tuna).
Thai drunken noodles. Pretty much any basic Thai curry (red, green, yellow, panang).
A full roast chicken + stuffing, gravy, and potatoes.
This fun one-pot Spanish dish I picked up when I was living there. It's chicken, chorizo (or whatever spicy sausage), mushrooms, gravy and white wine (although I can do a cream and stock version instead)
Shepards pie (usually mixed meat, but I can do a veg version)
Lamb stew (and, frankly, most stews, they are super easy).
Lamb vindaloo
Whatever salad is needed to go with any of the above.
I'm also pretty good at crepes, omelets, Bismark pancakes, and these "egg in cups" that are made in muffin tins, so I can do a breakfast for 10-12 pretty fast too.
Oh and I can pretty much always bake: gf orange chocolate cake, banana bread, and fruit crisps.
When I am in any one place for any length of time I tend to become the party house host and I love feeding people. So I've developed a back catalogue of quick reference feeds a lot foods.
I've also lived off the land and weird stuff like that, so I'm basically a "make it work" kinda cook. I'm one of those who can walk into a kitchen, assess the state of the canned goods, carbs, condiments, fresh & frozen food, and the pans/heating elements and come up with something. More art than science.

One of my favorite meals is Thai Tom Kha Gai soup. Easy recipe that tastes just like from a restaurant:
˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗ 1 can coconut cream (not coconut milk, cream makes a difference); use the full can.
˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗ 1 carton low-sodium chicken broth (there is enough salt in the tom kha paste thus no need to have salt in broth); use half the carton.
˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗ Tom kha (for sell on Amazon or at an Asian market); I used about nearly 1/4 cup for this, but always add and taste as you go so it is to your preference.
˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗ In Tom kha you'll generally see mushrooms, tomato, and a protein and some restaurants use other vegetables as they desire; for this I used mushrooms, bok choy, and tomato as a garnish. Protein choice was chicken, but shrimp or tofu (I prefer my tofu fried so it's less slimy) is equally delicious.
˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗ Steamed jasmine rice to pour the soup over in a bowl; rice makes a difference and makes the soup "bulkier" and more filling.
To do: combine the full can of coconut cream and half the carton of low-sodium chicken broth in a pot, let it warm on medium heat but not boil. Add the amount of tom kha paste to your liking. I also added some green curry paste for a spicy kick and I just like Thai green curry (bottom right photo). Stir. Let heat for 3 minutes. Add vegetables and protein (pre-cook your protein before adding into broth; although if you use shrimp you may put in "raw", just make sure it's fully cooked by the end). Stir and cover. Let simmer at low-medium heat for 7 minutes. Stir and do a taste test to make sure your vegetables are at the cooked level you desire, some like more crunchy vegetables and some like less so it's a matter of preference.
To serve: put rice in a bowl, pour soup over the rice. Add fish sauce with chilis (bottom left photo) if you desire; I almost can't get enough spice in my Thai food. To make the sauce: pour fish sauce in a small bowl and add chopped chilis (preferably bird's eye chili; if not available, may use Serrano finally chopped up). Garnish with a few tomato slices if you like.
A very warming soup for the Winter due to its melody of coconut cream, ginger, lemongrass, and warming chicken broth. And making it spicier helps one stay warmer, too, in my opinion.

Relaxed and easy-going atmosphere at Pii.
Location: Yokohamabashi, Minami Ward, Yokohama, Japan Timestamp: 18:48 on December 19, 2023
Fujifilm X100V with 5% diffusion filter ISO 160 for 1.0 sec. at ƒ/5.6 Astia/Soft film simulation
Right across the alleyway from a Japanese tavern called 'Wa' is a small Thai restaurant named 'Pii.'"
Right across the alleyway from a Japanese tavern called “Wa” is a small Thai restaurant named "Pii.” Although the green signboard says it’s a curry restaurant, it's actually a Thai restaurant.
The restaurant seems to be well known among the locals for its authentic flavors and popular 600-yen lunch, which is less than $5.00 USD.
Upon peeking inside, it transported me to the late Showa era, reminiscent of old tea houses or coffee shops from the 1970s to 1989.
Unlike a typical Japanese restaurant where the staff yell out a healthy “Iraishamasse” (Welcome!), and quickly take you to your seat with a menu, the husband running this shop barely noticed my presence as he focused on a sports game on the TV while his wife was busy in the open kitchen.
Perhaps Thai culture promotes a more relaxed and easy-going atmosphere compared to the typical Japanese setting. I felt like I was popping in for a meal at an old friend’s or relative’s house! LOL!
The Yokohamabashi shotengai shopping street and the small narrow dark alleys leading off from the main drag have a visible presence of Koreans, Chinese, Thai, Filipino, Indians, and a few other foreigners whose language I wasn’t able to identify.
The small groups of other foreigners creates a multicultural ambiance in the local neighborhood where various Asians seem to work in harmony with each other to meet the needs of the local community.
Explore other shops near Yokohamabashi Shotengai, and find references to related articles for further reading on my blog post: https://www.pix4japan.com/blog/20231219-yokohamabashi

Man bummer to hear about you lay off, but maybe I can help you feel better by giving you a trip down memory lane with this question
when did you first know your lucky lady was the woman for you
Hey thanks for the question. I met my girl on OkCupid. We matched just before getting vaccinated for the first time. We decided we'd wait 1 month and see each other a week after we were both vaccinated. During that time we texted every day. We met for boba tea and ended up talking for 4 hours.
The next date we had Thai food at her favorite restaurant. She had her usual Green Curry. I tried something new. I had this insanely spicy, crispy and sticky pork belly and broccoli. It was good. We talked for a while. We ended up driving to a park to sit and talk. It was there we talked about what we are looking for in a relationship. We both said we are looking for our person. Everything seemed easy with her.
But you asked me how I knew she was the one. On our like 5th or 6th date she texts me that I should come to her house after work and she'll make me dinner. She made me meatballs, gravy, and mashed potatoes. It seems silly but it was then I knew that she was a keeper.
I've told her this before. And it's funny that I've been cooking for us mostly. I wasn't much of a cook when I started dating her. But now my skills have grown. Honestly cooking meals for each other has been a love language for us.

do you like to cook? what are your go-to meals?
I love cooking! I cook a lot of pasta dishes and stir fry type meals in the week as it’s quick and easy. This week I’ve cooked thai chicken and basil, prawn linguine and chicken and lentil curry. I like cooking all sorts though x
