India has the right solution to help you build your architectural career
Tumblr media
Architecture is one of the broadest areas of human activity, dealing with the organization of space and solving any spatial aesthetic and social problem. Architecture is the art and science of designing and constructing various buildings, structures, and complexes necessary for human life and diverse activities. Architecture is not a natural phenomenon. It is a man-made phenomenon that stems from the thoughts and ideas of the human mind. An architectural designer is designing and creating for the people who are going to use and experience the structures and spaces and places they create. These architectural design elements and principles have been identified by people looking at architecture and buildings and trying to make sense of it and bring some meaning and order and logic to the pieces and aspects of what makes architecture. It is the absence and unconscious use of these elements and principles that allow an architect to unconsciously create something uncontrolled with little consideration of the experience of sensations, thoughts and emotions that their work will evoke in humans. An architect is a skilled professional who plans and designs and generally plays a key role in their construction.
Architecture professionals design structures for many purposes. They can build factories, design landscapes, or renovate homes to include climate-friendly measures. hi hi! could you please share your study techniques and advice for economics majors? I survived lower division just fine but upper division courses :( .
Hii! First of all, I want to apologize for answering this quite late - I wanted to give you an answer that's thorough enough and helpful. Read on below for tips!
Disclaimer: these tips are from my own experience and the experience of my peers, most of whom are in US institutions. However, I do think these tips should apply to many economics major programs.
Strengthen your mathematics foundations
Upper-division economics courses are math at their core. Here's an example of the objectives of an intermediate microeconomics course (source)
understanding the concepts of Pareto and sum-of-surplus efficiency, being able to determine whether a preference relation is complete, transitive, monotonic, and convex, and being able to determine whether a production function exhibits increasing, decreasing, or constant returns to scale.
Preference relations are concepts from discrete math. Increasing, decreasing, and constant returns are concepts from calculus.
Many upper-division courses also require knowledge of probability and statistics (game theory courses especially). Research-based classes often recommend having taken econometrics. Theoretical classes like decision theory are, as the name suggests, theoretically rigorous, so being comfortable with proofs is necessary, and knowing math theory is a great help.
A lot of people (myself included) struggle with higher division economics courses because they were not mathematically prepared. While you can definitely learn as you go, it will make your life a whole lot easier having the preparation or at least the comfort to work with the required mathematical concepts and use certain mathematical skills.
An example from personal experience: I had taken econometrics (a theoretical version) the spring of my sophomore year without much knowledge of multivariable calculus and having taken calculus II over a year before taking this class, and honestly I felt I had to work so much harder than my peers who were math majors or minors.
So yeah, you should definitely brush up on your math skills if you find yourself struggling. This could mean doing extra practice, looking for tutoring, or even taking a course.
Strengthen your economics foundations
Upper-division economics courses really build on lower-division courses. As far as I know, the purpose of upper-division courses is to teach us to synthesize what we learned from lower-division courses, i.e. to use the tools and techniques we've learned, and apply them to new economic settings.
For example, last fall I took a course on public finance (also known as welfare economics) and one of the topics we studied was regulating pollution. Two of the regulation methods we focused on were 1) cap & trade, i.e. giving pollution permits that can be traded, and 2) emission fees, i.e. setting a fee if emission is above a certain amount. The graphs below illustrate the two methods for two cases: inelastic marginal social benefit of pollution reduction, and elastic MSB of pollution reduction. Marginal cost and marginal social benefit curves are usually taught in lower-division courses, as are concepts of elasticity and demand-supply models.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another example from the same class: evaluating Pareto efficiency of the allocation of public goods involves being comfortable with indifference curves, utility functions, and production possibility curves, as shown below. (Even if you don't understand what's going on, the general shapes should look familiar.)
Tumblr media
Use the course's learning objectives to guide you
My probability and statistics professor taught me that the first step in studying any subject is to look at the learning objectives. These are the things you are expected to get out of the course and so they are the things you will be expected to know on an exam, do in a project/assignment, etc., not just information but also skills and techniques.
Study and practice drawing graphs
Graphs can hold a lot of information given that you know how to interpret them. In many cases, I found that if I understand the graph, then I understand the concept. Studying graphs saves a lot of study time, too, since the material's been summarized really neatly, and chances are you'll need to know the graph, too.
For many of my economics classes, I create a study guide comprising only graphs. These aren't just the graphs that are explicitly taught in class, though. I try to include as many cases, including special cases, because it teaches me to be able to think through the concepts being used in the graphs, instead of just being like, okay this is what it looks like.
For example, when studying Edgeworth-Bowley boxes, I drew them with different types of indifference curves, and then for each of them, I drew their utility possibility frontiers. Or when studying anything involving demand-supply curves (e.g. different types of taxation), I draw a graph for each combination of demand and supply elasticities (e.g. inelastic demand with inelastic supply; inelastic demand with elastic supply; etc.).
Of course, I don't always get it right. If there's something I'm unsure about or don't understand, I go to office hours for help.
Learn from assignments and practice a lot
Your assignments point out the types of questions you'll be expected to analyze and work through and thus can guide your studying, whether it's mathematical problem sets or a series of essays.
In classes with problem sets, doing them seriously helps SO much. They train your mental muscles to be able to solve or analyze the problems you're expected to be able to solve and analyze after taking the course. Your professor created these problem sets to achieve the learning objectives. If you're having trouble with any part of the problem set, you probably don't understand a key concept, skill, or technique the course expects you to, and that's totally fine; just don't forget to work on it and ask for help.
In addition, problem sets also serve as great revision tools to help you actively recall and synthesize the material you've studied.
Go to office hours for conceptual help
I've mentioned a couple times to reach out for help if you need it and I cannot stress this enough. In most cases, professors and TAs (teaching assistants) are more than willing to help you succeed. I would suggest going to each instructor/staff member if there are multiple and seeing which one is the most helpful, i.e. the person who can fill in your knowledge gaps the easiest, who understands your misunderstandings. Sometimes it's the professor, other times the TA is a better fit. Sometimes the TA gives better help for problem sets but the professor gives better help for conceptual problems. Use the resources available to you!
I hope this helps, and please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions :)

Repeating the Cycle
I thought I’d write a little story about ink infection, as well as Sammy’s role after he was transformed. It’s inspired by Shazzbaa’s theories (I’d say which, but we don’t want spoilers, now do we?)!
I’ll tell you guys later tonight about the future writing projects I have planned.
---
Sammy awoke in his sanctuary, as he had many times before. He hadn’t been to his apartment in... well, days anyhow. He felt better when he was near the ink. He tried the door to exit his private sanctuary, and it was locked. “Is this a sign?” he asked his lord. “Is it time?”
Yes, his lord spoke back.
Sammy smiled- smiled rather weakly, as the pain from his ink infection had been wearing on him heavily. “Finally.”
All the waiting. All the sickness. All the fear. It was time to see what it was all for. And his lord had assured him, with the comforting voice of a father to a young son, that it would be worth it.
Sammy dragged himself over to the leaking pipe that hung from the ceiling of his sanctuary and turned on the ink supply. Ink sputtered down onto Sammy’s face and clothes, and he fell to his knees, hands outstretched and mouth open as though he was staring into heaven itself. His heart was pounding. He was shaking from adrenaline, and not even being surrounded with, covered in, and consuming the ink that normally numbed his symptoms seemed to be helping. This had to be fear instead of withdrawal.
Do not be afraid, the voice comforted, you will have ascended in mere hours. I promise, you will be safe and healthy. I promise, it will be better than anything you’ve ever experienced.
“Thank you! Bendy, hear my praise! I want what you have for me! I crave your embrace!”
Sammy took a long suck of ink from the pipe, then laid down on the floor. He was weak. so weak.
That’s it. You’ve made it. You need only wait now.
Sammy trusted Bendy. Bendy told him that everything he’d done and experienced in his life- even the nightmarish last few years- was leading to something. It told him that everything was okay.
Sammy didn’t know how much time had passed when he felt Joey tying up his ankles. With some struggle, he sat up and tried to push Joey off of him, but it had little effect. Before long, Joey had finished on Sammy’s ankles and was straddling his chest to tie up his hands. The last thing he saw with his biological eyes was Joey’s knife slitting his throat.
When Sammy woke up, the voice of his lord was gone. By trying to make a toon out of him, Joey had robbed him of his ascension and severed his connection to him.
---
Grant awoke in his office to the horrid ticking of his Bendy clock and the array of whispering voices that had plagued him since early in his infection. The clock’s small hand pointed to six, but Grant had no idea whether it was morning or evening. Months of ink infection had ruined his sense of time. He tried the door to his office and found that it had been locked from the outside by chain and padlock. Grant laughed at the absurdity of it all- his life had spiralled into a nightmarish fever dream.
“Does this mean it’s time?” Grant asked.
Yes. Your time is almost up, the voice answered, and for once, Grant trusted it. He felt almost too tired from illness to care.
“I’ll do anything you ask to stop it.”
No response, except for those muttered voices. Grant hadn’t expected one- the voice rarely had his best interests in mind. He shuffled over to his desk and pushed aside some papers to go back to sleep- possibly for the last time.
And then he saw it- a report from Joey that he’d received mere days before his symptoms had started- ending with the words “Fix this or I’ll have your head!” angrily scrawled at the bottom.
That was it. Joey had done this to motivate him. He just had to figure out how to keep the studio from bankruptcy and he’d be cured!
Yes! Yes! You’re right. Fix it! the voice yelled.
Adrenaline flooded Grant’s system as he jerked open his filing cabinet with shaking hands in search of the necessary files to fix the budget. This was his one chance to survive. The muttering voices were screaming in his head- ear-piercing. His head felt ready to explode.
“Shut up and let me focus!” he screamed.
Ink will soothe your symptoms.
That was something that the voice had told him frequently. He hadn’t given in to it yet- not much, anyhow- because common sense told him that ink was inedible. It was also his sincere belief that the voice wanted to kill him. The voice had told him, back before the physical symptoms had become obvious, that he was merely losing his mind and needed to hide it from everyone, lest he be institutionalized. Then, as soon as the physical symptoms had taken root, it had changed its tune- he was losing his mind, because he was ill with an incurable, supernatural disease, and no hospital could help him, and going to one would only guarantee that he would be a test subject for the limited time he had left. Listening to it then had gotten him into this position, and he wasn’t eager to listen to it again.
But this was life or death. He opened the supply on the ink pipe that Thomas- for some reason he didn’t understand- had installed in his office, and drank deeply.
The voice- the muttering- the headache- it all stopped. Silence. Finally.
Grant’s hands were covered in ink now, and were sure to soak any paper he used. I can’t let that stop me. He dropped to his knees and started painting calculations on the floor.
The numbers didn’t add up. Not a single one. Was his mind was too frayed to do basic mathematical functions?! How could he fix anything, let alone this insurmountable debt, while he could barely think straight?! Calm down. Stay calm. Try again. Life or death. Time is money. What will Joey say?!
From the cracks within the wall, Sammy watched as Grant spiralled into panic and tears, and turned his office inside out trying to find anything that could help, expressing his fears through wall-writing, and attempting escape the room. Poor thing, Sammy thought, remembering the pain and uncertainty of his own ink infection, but soon I’ll be able to teach him the truth.
It had been years since Sammy’s sacrifice. Not only did Sammy still work for Joey now that he was a failed toon, Joey had him on a schedule. Every day at 11:00 AM, Sammy would ooze through the walls of Joey’s office for their morning meeting. Sammy wasn’t particularly happy about doing anything for the man who had turned him into a failed Boris just as he was about to fulfill a higher destiny, but the voice had once told him that to follow Joey was to follow his lord, and now those previous words (which Sammy had recorded and studied every day) were all he had left as a doctrine to follow. Sammy hoped that with enough obedience and service, his lord would see past his ruined body and grant him his destiny.
Joey’s demands were often difficult, but they were simple: sacrificing specific people into specific toons, and looking after the infected. Joey rarely sacrificed people on his own anymore, and instead relied on Sammy to do the dirty work of knocking people out, killing them on pentagrams, and then dealing with the resulting dead body, blood and ink-stains on the floor, and whatever abomination came out of the ink machine. Looking after the ink-infected was easier: keep an eye on them, and once they become too infected to be useful, lock them in their offices or in infirmary rooms and take them to their prison in the basement come night. Sammy had overseen the infection of nearly thirty people by now and had sacrificed dozens.
Thankfully, Joey’s demands were not very time-intensive, and he had plenty of time for his passion: teaching the lost ones about their lord and saviour, Bendy.
The lost ones lived in a prison in the very basement of Joey Drew Studios, along with the failed toons. Sammy’s sermons were some of the only times they were allowed out of their cages, and so they were always happy to see him.
Some agreed with him. Often, these were the same ones who had heard a comforting voice as they were infected- generally those with a religious background. Others thought him insane. Their voice had been different- wrong- hallucinatory- and quite often threatening. Sammy had these lost ones do penance in order to find their way to Bendy. Some found him, leaving Sammy feeling accomplished, but also jealous that he could never have what they had. Hopefully, his lord would see the wonderful work he was doing and one day ascend him along with the rest of them- because surely, that was not their final form.
Today’s meeting was like any other. Sammy waited in the walls until Joey’s 10:30 client left, and then slithered out before him.
“Anything to report?” Joey asked casually, as he looked over some paperwork. These meetings were usually uneventful.
“Two people are currently under quarantine. Three more are infected but still able to work for now. Everything is fine- except for one small detail. One of the people under quarantine is destroying his office out of fear. If you’d like, I could tie him up snug until he transforms, or force-feed him ink to speed the process along.”
Joey considered this. "Hmm... well, I do need an Edgar. He would work as well as any. Are you sure he’s close to transforming?” All ink-infected people had strange beliefs and delusions (except for Sammy, of course- his visions were absolute truth), but by this point in their infection, they were generally too tired to do anything destructive- especially ones like this one, who had increased the duration of their infection by resisting the urge to drink ink.
“It will be a matter of hours,” Sammy assured.
“Well, that’s not convenient, but I do have lunch right after this. I’ll get the Charley down to the basement, and you get the Barley and Edgar. The Barley’s name is Lacie Benton, and I’d suggest you knock her out before taking her anywhere- she’s a tough one. But the Edgar shouldn’t be a problem, right?”
“No... I suppose not.” Severely ink-infected people were, without exception, very weak, and Sammy was stronger now than he’d ever been as a human.
“Alright! See you down there as soon as possible.”
Sammy nodded, slunk back into the walls, and cursed everything, especially his order to obey Joey Drew. A severely ink infected person had never, and would never, produce a good toon- part of their souls had already been connected to the other lost ones. Joey must have known that, but he still insisted on stealing the people that were meant to be Sammy’s to guide, probably because in Joey’s mind, killing a person was murder but killing a lost one (or someone who soon would be a lost one) was not. Joey didn’t see his people as equally human, and it sickened Sammy. Nonetheless, he slithered through the walls until he came upon Grant’s office.
The office looked like a madhouse. The floors and walls were coated with repetitive writing. Furniture had been strewn about. Grant himself was curled against the ink pipe in his office, covered in so much ink that Sammy had thought he was already transformed before he realized he still had hair. The poor thing had tried so hard, while so sick, at something so futile. Sammy had his orders, but he wasn’t going to lay a hand on his sheep-that-wouldn’t-be until he had to.
Sammy slithered out of the wall- slowly, so as not to scare him.
“Who are you?” Grant asked. He sounded so tired of all the supernatural surprises that he barely cared.
“I’m here on behalf of Joey Drew,” Sammy began.
“I’m so sorry. I tried... but I couldn’t. I suppose you’re here to kill me, aren’t you?”
“No. I’m here to give you congratulations. The others in your department were able to use these brilliant calculations,” Sammy gestured widely at the messily scrawled gibberish on a wall, “to make a plan. The studio is going to avoid bankruptcy, and you’re going to be cured. Come with me.” Sammy offered Grant his hand. Grant took it, and Sammy helped him up.
“I-I don’t understand. I don’t understand how-” All of those calculations... Grant would have guessed that they were worthless.
“Shh... you’ll be clearer-headed soon. Just come with me, now. I can’t be out there where everyone can see me, but go to the elevator, go to the bottom floor, and I will be there. I promise- you will be fine.”
“Thank you so much. But, my door-”
Sammy slithered back into the wall. Grant heard the click of a door unlocking, followed by the clink of chains falling limp. His office door was unlocked. Do I trust him? Grant asked himself. This day kept getting stranger. If I don’t, I’m guaranteed to die. I have nothing to lose.
Sammy slithered into the wooden floor of the elevator and only reappeared once the elevator hit the very bottom.
“I’m sorry,” Sammy lamented “I want to lead you to Bendy. I want you to find peace as one of my followers. But it is not in the cards.”
The two made brief eye contact- or would have, if Sammy’s face weren’t covered in mask. Grant, obviously, had no idea what Sammy was talking about. Then, Sammy grabbed Grant’s hair, slammed his head against the wall a few times to knock him out, tied him up for sacrifice, and left to find Lacie Benton.

“Of course, little easier,” he leafed through the stack and pointed to a place.  “Here, where they were using the small boats to harpoon, would seem a likely bit to add it to.”
“I know that I can trust you to do it well,” said Barad, in genuine admiration, as Morgu’s facile hand added the note.
“Would you like to join me and Master Selked for a game of Three Dragons this evening after dinner?”
“I would be happy to,” said Morgu sincerely.  “I’ll be there.”
Arriving back at his cabin, Barad noticed at once that Kurti had taken down his bed hanging and was hard at work mending a worn spot.  She looked up, an expression of fear flitting across her face to be hidden by a mask of pleasure.  She had obviously been going through the cabin looking for clues to his taste as she cleaned.  His gaze caught that fact as he had opened the door.  His carpet was straightened of its wrinkles, port-sills, chest tops, knobs and shelves had been damp-wiped.  His clothes-press was open with everything neatly hung and airing.  She had been more than merely busy.  She had found the unlocked chest under the bed with its cargo of very feminine clothing.
“Captain! Welcome back!  I had hoped to have this done and hung before you returned but velvet is hard to darn so that it doesn’t show.” She held out the nearly repaired bed hanging for his inspection.
Gravely he examined it in her outstretched hands, actually appreciating the quality of her needlework.  Velvet was hard to repair when it was worn thin and her work would be invisible when done.  He let his gaze go past her outstretched hands and down her arms to her bosom. He let his eyes rest on her breasts for an embarrassingly long moment.
“Excellent,” he said ambiguously.  She was dressed in a blouse that had sheer amber sleeves and front, loosely fitted and open down the center of her chest, with shiny black mussel fabric, laced tight from just below the breasts to her waist where it vanished into a sash-belt of light brown.  Dark brown, almost black, slick fabric pants covered her to the groin, with legs of sheer amber matching the top of the outfit. Everything was accented and decorated with ruffles of white Longin Lace.
Kurti saw the approval in his eyes and felt relief flood her.  I’m glad that you like what I’ve done and how I dressed.  I’ll live longer.  Acting sprightly, she said, “I hope that you don’t mind that I got into these clothes, Captain.   I found them in an unlocked chest beneath the bunk, while I was cleaning.” Suffering only slightly inside as she did so, she let the hanging fall, straightened her back and squared her shoulders to project her bust more fully and stepped forward to hug him to her.
Surprised beyond measure, Captain Barad returned her hug.  Her head snuggled into him barely at mid-chest.  No other cabin-girl has ever treated me like this before.  The others were all too afraid or too angry.  He held her to him and stroked her medium brown hair as he said quietly, “I know that you are afraid of me, Kurti.  That is wise.  I can see that you are also determined to do what I want and help me however you can.  That is also wise.
“I will tell you frankly that no other girl has steered this course. Already, the clothes that you chose for me appear to be having some effect.  You are the first to clean without my order.  None has ever approached me as you have, voluntarily, unless her spirit was in ruins.”  Absently, as he put his thoughts into order, he stroked her gently along the jaw, tilting her head up to look into her gray eyes.  She schooled herself not to flinch from his touch.  He let her go.
In a voice that surprised her with its pleasant tone, he said, “Finish your mending, Kurti.  It is going well.  I should like to watch you do it.  Besides, we don’t have time to sport now.  I’ll have to make a sighting of one of the moons, shortly,” he said, settling into a comfortable chair.
“Is it the rise of Carsis?” she asked curiously, looking at him over her busy hands.  “I knew that a noon sighting would be necessary but I couldn’t figure out from the books what you would need for that.  I did set out the ephemeris book of Carsis, your favorite stylus, a tallow-slate and your most recent chart on the chart table.”
“Yes, it will be Carsis rise.”  Captain Barad’s brow furrowed in perplexity as he looked at the preparations on his chart table.  “How did you know that this was my favorite stylus?”
Kurti ventured a smile and said, “I cleaned.  That stylus was far more worn and polished by your hand than any other.”
“Simple, obvious, observant, and stemming directly from serving me.  You think and your actions are ruled by your thought. You rule your fear.” He measured her with his pale watery-blue eyes with embarrassing directness.  “I will be frank.  I like some fear in those about me. Even more, I like to see that fear mastered, though never banished. I respect such people.  They are rare.  I did not expect to find such a quality in you.  No other cabin-girl that I have had has shown your strength.”
Captain Barad gathered two instruments from a shelf and went up on deck to make his sighting.  Soon he returned to set the water-clock to zero and went back up to continue his navigational work.  After some more time he came down and noted the elapsed time.  Consulting the Ephemeris for Carsis, Barad began to calculate on his tallow-slate. He muttered to himself, looked at his chart, rubbed out his problems and started over.
“Sir,” Kurti ventured timidly, “I am very handy with figures.  I know nothing of navigation but if you give me figures to work, I can do them for you.”  I must be crazy.  If he thinks that I am trying to learn his job, he will kill me.
The Captain looked up calculatingly from his morass of figures and held out a stylus.  “I’d almost forgotten that you were a ship’s stores keeper besides being a diver.  Here, try this.  These two need to be added, then this figure from the table has to be subtracted from the total.  After that, find the closest figure on this other table here.”
Kurti made a show of having some difficulty with the simple task.  Even so, she was quicker than he had been.  It was when she was looking up the last figure that she found a difficulty.  Perplexed, she examined her work and found it to be good.  Then she picked up the book and looked closely at the columns of figures.  She laughed and pointed to the Carsis rising time in the book.
“Here is the culprit!  A dragged bit of hair has made a three into a nine.”
Looking at the book, Captain Barad said, “Observant.  How did you know that your answer was wrong?”
She held out the tallow-slate.  “I got the same answer as the one that you rubbed out.  Since yours was wrong, mine had to be too.”  Barad nodded accepting the simple explanation.
He surprised her by his next question.  “Kurti, do you understand Lading functions?  General Mass Distribution equations?”
“Yes, Sir.  As a stores clerk I had to figure cargo placement, ballast distribution and load for the hands to implement.”
Barad nodded thoughtfully, “I always accept the Gifts of the Dragons.  I may have a good use for your mathematical talents.”
Kurti arched a skeptical eyebrow.  “My mathematical talents, Captain?”
“Indeed,” he replied, his eyes gaging her with a new interest.  “The indenture of a skilled Calculator is worth thrice or more the indenture of a boat-builder.”
Shifting subjects quickly, Barad smiled at her slight confusion and said, “I do try to reward those who willingly do me service.  I had intended a bit of bed-sport before this evening’s game of Three Dragons.  I offer you your choice.  No answer that you give will be held against you.”
Ouch! I dressed to provoke his lust.  If I turn him down, I will appear to be teasing him.  Not safe!  “You are my Captain,” she replied.  My duty is to you.  Besides, it would be a shame not to follow through on what I’ve started.”  She gestured at the sheer and shiny clothing.  Stomach churning a bit at what she would do for survival, she led him to the bed.

Researchers Discover How Human Sperm Really Swim
Tumblr media
In 1677 Anton van Leeuwenhoek, Dutch scientist and inventor of the first compound microscope, finally gave into peer pressure from his colleagues and used the tool to examine his own semen. The wriggling “animalcules” that he described would come to be known as individual sperm cells, or spermatozoa. Each had a rounded head and, van Leeuwenhoek thought, a tail that moved side to side to project it through fluid. Until now, pretty much everything scientists know about human sperm movement has been based on van Leeuwenhoek’s primitive observations. But a paper published today in Science Advances has upended roughly 350 years’ worth of assumptions about reproduction, the most essential of biological functions.
“There’s just complete misinformation in almost the entire history of understanding sperm functional biology, and it needs to be corrected, but it’s a real challenge,” says Scott Pitnick, an evolutionary biologist who studies sperm biology at Syracuse University and who was not involved in the study. “And this is one of the first studies that has really risen to that challenge and cracked sort of a complex problem.”
Using 3-D microscopy and advanced mathematical analyses, an international team of researchers from the University of Bristol in England and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico discovered that the human sperm tails’ snakelike movement is an optical illusion. Rather than moving side-to-side, sperm tails actually turn in only one direction. Without other adjustments, a one-sided stroke would result in sperm swimming in circles and never reaching their destination, the female egg. To compensate, the scientists found, the body or head of the sperm rotates independently in a corkscrew-like motion in the opposite direction, enabling the whole cell to move forward in a straight line.
“We were not expecting to find what we found,” says Hermes Gadêlha, head of the Polymaths Lab at University of Bristol and lead author on the study. “The aim of the project was ‘blue sky’ [or broad] research, to understand how sperm moves in three dimensions. And the result has completely changed the belief system that we have.”
youtube
The limitations of van Leeuwenhoek’s description of sperm motility were no fault of his own; he was using the most advanced technology available at the time. “To see the true movement, you would have to swim with the cell, and the way you do this, is almost like if you could get a GoPro camera and attach it to the head of the sperm, and look at the tail,” says Gadêlha.
To get an accurate picture of how a sperm cell moves, Gadêlha and his team vertically suspended sperm in a solution. They set the sperm solution in a stabilized 3-D microscope to scan for motion as a high-speed camera recorded more than 55,000 frames per second at many angles. They also attached a piezoelectric device—which measures changes in pressure, acceleration, and force by converting these properties to electrical charges—to the 3-D microscope. That device gathered information about sperm movement at the level of submicron resolution, smaller than one-millionth of a meter. By running the combined data gathered from all the machines through advanced mathematical transformations, the scientists were able to find movement averages and “see” the true directionality of the tails.
Each sperm cell moved like a spinning top, rotating around its own axis, and also around a middle axis. “What nature is telling us is that there is more than one way to achieve symmetry,” says Gadêlha. “Sperm use asymmetry to create symmetry.”
Human spermatozoa are not the only microorganisms to function this way—mouse and rat sperm and the flagella of Chlamydomonas, a type of green algae, also have asymmetric movements and an underlying asymmetric shape. This, says Gadêlha, may be indicative of universality in organizational structures across species.
Whether or not a sperm’s movement is the most efficient way to swim is hard to quantify. “We like to think that nature is optimizing things but we always have to remember that there are many competing aspects. A sperm cell is not just made to swim and find the egg, it has to find chemical cues, react to different viscosities, activate,” says Gadêlha. “At every stage you need a new super power that enables you to do these things.”
To understand the evolution of structural mechanisms within an organism, Pitnick says, it’s about understanding the familiar biological concept of form fitting function; the shape of something is designed for the job it is meant to perform. To truly understand sperm, it must be observed in its intended, selective environment—the female reproductive tract, which scientists also need to study more. “The female is a complex three-dimensional environment.,” says Pitnick. “And we don’t know very much about it, and in part that’s just been a historical, obscene male bias in doing biology.”

Sperm tail moves asymmetrically, wiggling the tail to one side only. This causes the sperm to spin in 3D.

Doctors think that this new discovery showing how sperm move can help treat infertility, a condition that affects roughly 50 million couples globally. Male biological factors are solely responsible for an average of 20 to 30 percent of cases of infertility, and contribute to about 50 percent over all. Still, these statistics are biased based on countries where data from IVF and other fertility treatments are common, so sperm factors could be even more significant than recorded. “[Male infertility] is really quite common, perhaps more common than the general public realizes,” says Cori Tanrikut, a reproductive urologist with Shady Grove Fertility Center in Maryland. “And right now, if you want to think about this study, currently, we really have limited means of improving or optimizing sperm motility.”
The more accurately scientists can understand the fundamental molecular biology of sperm motility, the better doctors may be able to address motility issues associated with infertility, says Tanrikut. She hopes that knowledge gained from future work in the field will help her offer patients less aggressive fertility treatment options, or even improve their chances of conceiving without assistance.
Implications of Gadêlha and his team’s discovery could also go far beyond the scope of what this study demonstrates about sperm. The cell as an organism makes unconscious computations and corrections, adjusting torque and movement patterns depending on the conditions around it. Understanding these mechanisms could inform soft robotics research and materials science. One of Gadêlha’s students, for example, is looking at how the body’s slight, undetectable oscillations could be useful in developing foot and ankle prosthetics.

Day 8 - Encounter
After the third day of the Tracy Industries annual general meeting, Scott just wanted to throw in the towel. Sometimes it was too much for him to handle, and the annual meeting was the worst part of being CEO. Three weeks of day long meetings, having to chat with people who only wanted to promote their own self-interest and having to go to more corporate events because he was ‘in town’, all while International Rescue had to struggle on without him.
Scott walked into the bar of the private club; thankful he’s been able to slip out before anyone could corner him. He fell into one of the chairs in a more secluded corner and let his head fall back, gaze fixating on the intricate design on the ceiling. After passing his membership card to the server who approached him, he ordered the most expensive scotch the establishment had. While still staring at the ceiling, Scott removed his tie, slipping it into his suit pocket and undid the top button of his shirt. He unbuttoned the suit jacket and rolled his shoulders back and pulling his arms free, before throwing the jacket over the back of the chair as the waiter came carrying his drink. Taking it with a smile, he took as sip, letting the liquid roll over his tongue before he let it burn its way down his throat. A sigh escaped his lips; this was the only to survive this torture.
Allowing himself the luxury of slouching he closed his eyes and tried to relax. Scott planned to sit like that for a while, taking the occasional sip until all his drink was gone and it was time to order food, as was his usual AGM ritual. He paid good money for the privacy this club gave him; he damn well was going to enjoy it.
“Scott Tracy!? Is that really you?”
Scott groaned inwardly, reluctantly opening his eyes to the intruder. Standing in front of him was an older version of his old school friend Kenneth Robertson, who he had lost touch with when he had joined the Air Force. The man before him was dressed in a good suit but still looked out of place in this high-end establishment, so Scott knew he wasn’t a regular here. He couldn’t help but smile at the memory that popped into his head.
“Yes, it’s me. You’re looking great, Kenneth.” Scott stood up and shook the man’s hand, the shake firm, though Kenneth went a step further and pulled Scott in for a back slap. A little surprised at the contact, Scott sat back down, trying to compose himself, while Kenneth settled into the seat beside him.
“So, what have you been up to since you left school? You went to Yale to major in accountancy, right?”
Kenneth smiled at him, “so you do remember us then! We all thought you’d gone and forgotten us when you joined the force! Yeah, I went to Yale though majored in business management in the end with a minor in accountancy. Remember, Bertie? He went to Yale too, though he majored in mathematics, with a minor in chemistry. He’s currently leading a research group for some big pharmacological company; I can never remember which one. As for me, I’m director of accountancy in my father’s firm, big surprise there. Never expected you to go the same way though.”
Scott gave his friend a small smile. It was true that Kenneth had always been expected to work for his father. The two of them had spoken in depth about it as teenagers, Scott trying to convince Kenneth he didn’t have to follow in his father’s life plan for him. Everyone knew that Scott loved flying and wanted to be a pilot for his own reasons, not just because his father was, and he certainly wanted nothing to do with his father’s business. His father had never expected Scott to take on the business, yet after his father’s accident Scott had felt like he had to become the CEO. He’d already left the Air Force by this point to fly Thunderbird 1 for International Rescue, but his friends didn’t know that. To them he’d left the force to become a businessman.
“Plans changed. I had no choice after the accident.”
“You could have let someone else take the role. There are so many other people who could have done it Scott. You didn’t have to give up what you love, just because felt like you had to take your father’s place.”
Kenneth always had a way of getting to the route of the problem, never beating around the bush. Scott had felt like he had to take his father’s place as CEO. The pressure to become head of the family, head of IR and head of TI had been immense. In his grief, he just took on the burden, accepting that it was his role and forcing himself to learn the ropes.
“I would have let someone else be CEO, if that someone else would have stuck to my father’s vision for the company. Every potential candidate had their own agenda and wanted to take TI to places my father hadn’t wanted it to go. The board are constantly trying to take on projects my father would disagree with and stand in the way of the ones he would have wanted. Only I knew what he really wanted the company to stand for, so it’s my job to keep his legacy alive. I never wanted this, but it’s something I have to do.”
“Damn Scott. You are good at getting yourself stuck with things you don’t want to be stuck with, don’t you?”
Kenneth grinned, referring to the time in school when he mentioned how they could go around the local government run schools and do exciting workshops to their top pupils to help encourage them to apply for the scholarship programme. Only for Scott to end up being the person who, with the help of his head of year, had to plan the whole thing. It did mean he got out of some lessons to do said workshops however he then had to catch up in the evening, which was nowhere near as fun. Thankfully it had been his last year so someone else got the joy the next year.
“Says the one who fell asleep during an engineering class and managed to superglue a spanner to side of his face!”
“Not fair, I was only tired because you insisted on me standing watch while you had your wicked way with Jasmine!”
“Firstly, it was Judith, and secondly, I returned the favour when you were seeing Angela. I just had the discipline not to fall asleep during class!”
The two men moved to a table and ordered dinner, continuing to reminisce about their school days. Kenneth caught Scott up on what everyone was now doing or not doing, while Scott shared the odd story from his Air Force days and the mishaps he’d seen at various functions he’d attended over the years. Kenneth happily showed off pictures of his fiancé and extending an invite to the wedding. Scott brushed it off saying he’d have to see what his schedule was like closer to the time but did swap digital business cards with the man and telling him the best way to contact him was through his secretary. After dinner Kenneth excused himself, wanting to get back to his hotel so he can catch up with his fiancé. Scott paid the bill and headed back to the hotel, thankful that he’d had good dinner company for once.
Once in his suite, he changed into his nightwear and decanted himself another whiskey, thinking over the surprise meeting. Kenneth had been there to meet a high-end client who was member and was flying home on the Friday night. Part of Scott wished he could tell Kenneth that he was living his dream, that flying Thunderbird 1 was better than any plane the Air Force or even the GDF could offer him. Looking at the itinerary on his phone, he could see he was required at a function the next night; a black-tie event with lots of businessmen trying to outdo each other with their successes. Sighing, Scott looked at the business card of his old school friend, half-wishing he could spend another night reminiscing on their schooldays. Sending a quick message to his secretary, telling her to pass on any mail from Kenneth straight to him, Scott decided that maybe, just maybe, be would try to make it to the man’s wedding. His family were always pestering him about not taking time for himself, so maybe this would do him some good.

Replicated from my article on Medium (https://link.medium.com/jyp3jUzjuX)
In the classic Data Science Venn diagram a data scientist exists at the convergence of skills in mathematics & statistics, hacking and domain expertise¹. But alongside this is the importance of soft skills in a data science role². To be truly effective a data scientist should possess strong communication skills; be able to negotiate and persuade stakeholders; and ultimately lead projects and teams to success, in a range of commercial or industrial environments.
This motivated me to compile a list of book recommendations for burgeoning data scientists to consider reading as part of their personal development. In my growing responsibilities to coach and lead project teams, I realised that although data scientists are generally very conscientious about their continuous development, they often focus heavily on the technical skills of the role and neglect to balance this with dedicated learnings on the softer skills side. I’ve found it very rewarding to incorporate soft skills learning into my personal development plan, to strengthen my commercial awareness and understanding of how businesses, and more importantly people, operate. And I have encouraged that these learnings be picked up in the projects and teams that I have helped lead, with great effect.
In these recommendations I summarise the key data science learnings from each book that can be put into practice in the role. I focus on the books I think most strongly complement each other to round-out the many soft skills an effective data scientist should hold, gathered from my experiences growing from a Junior role to Senior role and as the Tech Lead on a variety of projects.
“How to Stop Worrying and Start Living” — Dale Carnegie
Tumblr media
This was the first ‘self help’ book I read when I transitioned into a data science role, and it was an excellent introduction to the effectiveness of personal development.
Recommended for: anyone who has ever experienced imposter syndrome!
Main message: recognise the cause of your worries, then rationalise them and form a plan to conquer them.
Key learnings for data scientists: when worrying about project briefs, code bugs, presentations to stakeholders, etc. it’s helpful to identify and mitigate the risks, so that you / your team / your stakeholders can be assured things are understood and under control.
Fave quote: “Decide just how much anxiety a thing may be worth — and refuse to give it any more.”
“How to Win Friends and Influence People” — Dale Carnegie
Tumblr media
After enjoying Dale Carnegie’s writing style I next read his book on influencing people, which is itself top-ranked as a highly influential book (so meta)! Don’t let the title put you off: the advice is rooted in being your most authentic self, with a focus on interpersonal skills and the importance of empathy.
Recommended for: sociopaths (j/k!) anyone looking to become more empathetic or personable.
Main message: be sincere, honest, positive and humble when engaging others, treating them with genuine interest and respect.
Key learnings for data scientists: various projects and teams will bring together a diverse range of people whom it is important to empathise with to understand their motivations and behaviours so you can bring them on a journey of building an ideal solution, which may or may not align with their initial expectations.
Fave quote: “The only way to get the best of an argument is to avoid it.”
“Thinking Fast and Slow” — Daniel Kahneman
Tumblr media
Great book to become aware of the differences between our conscious and unconscious thought processes.
Recommended for: those who want to bring more reasoning and deliberation into their actions and behaviours.
Main message: by recognising our ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ ways of thinking, we can better control the use of logic in our decision making and reduce any overconfidence that stems from emotion or unconscious bias.
Key learnings for data scientists: in the various engagements with people across DS projects it’s useful to understand how both your and their decision-making happens since not everyone involved will think in the same way, so you should tailor your approach to the situation and engage ‘slow’ thinking where necessary.
Fave quote: “He had an impression, but some of his impressions are illusions.”
“The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” — Stephen R. Covey
Tumblr media
Introduces seven approaches for being effective at attaining your goals, especially when working with others.
Recommended for: those in project management, team leadership, or a consultancy role.
Main message: how to move from dependence to independence (self-mastery) and interdependence (working effectively with others).
Key learnings for data scientists: the effective prioritisation of tasks is demonstrated through measures of urgency and importance (priority matrix of “do”, “plan”, “delegate” or “eliminate”), which is useful for breaking down requests from stakeholders so you can focus on the most valuable parts. Methods to “synergize” a team are outlined to help ensure data scientists are aligned to the same goals and work positively towards them, relying on effective leadership to ensure a “win-win” situation.
Fave quote: “Seek first to understand, then to be understood.”
“The Personal MBA” — Josh Kaufman
Tumblr media
A condensed version of the typical lessons covered in an MBA program. It highlights key aspects of business education and strategies with examples.
Recommended for: those with limited business background or training, especially if now working with businesspeople or in a commercial setting.
Main message: the thinking behind effective strategies and decision-making throughout a business model; from evaluating the market and measuring value to building a product and managing uncertainty.
Key learnings for data scientists: stakeholders, higher management, and 3rd party providers or consultants, will all usually have a stronger foundation and background in business than a data scientist. To understand their motivations and essentially speak their language in order to gain their trust, it’s crucial to study business theory; covering forms of value creation & delivery, marketing, finance, psychology, and the function of business models and systems.
Fave quote: “Where there’s hassle, there’s opportunity.” — (Hassle Premium)
“The Bullet Journal Method” — Ryder Carroll
Tumblr media
A method for improving your productivity through effective note taking and to-do lists.
Recommended for: anyone who struggles to keep track of their ever-growing to-do list.
Main message: using a simple written system of symbols and rules for recording actions, events and notes, you can improve your productivity.
Key learnings for data scientists: work in tech tends to be fast paced, with various dynamic requests from the business, so it’s important to manage this on a daily level — which is where the bullet journal method can help. A data scientist might wear many hats in one day, compiling various to-do lists that it’s useful to then order and prioritise, so you know what to action now, schedule for the future, or just eliminate if unimportant (see “7 habits…” above).
Fave quote: “Track the past, order the present, design the future.”
The following books hold a variety of logic, reasoning and insight on the softer side of data science & biz-tech skills.
“Freakonomics”, “Super Freakonomics”, “Think Like A Freak” and “When To Rob A Bank” — Steven D. Levitt & Stehpen J. Dubner
Tumblr media
These are a fascinating read that show how economics is at the root of so many parts of society, highlighting its importance and influence.
“Adapt: why success always starts with failure”, “The Logic Of Life” and “The Undercover Economist” — Tim Harford
Tumblr media
The psychology of people in society is explored through examples of economics at play in business, marketing, strategy and innovation.
“The Four: the hidden DNA of Amazon, Apple, Facebook and Google” — Scott Galloway “Are you smart enough to work at Google?” — William Poundstone “Outliers: the story of success” — Malcolm Gladwell “The Lean Startup: how constant innovation creates radically successful businesses” — Eric Reis
Tumblr media
These books highlight how the ability to think creatively and act on innovation are what current tech companies thrive on and seek to add/grow in their employ.
“The Leader’s Mindset: how to win in the age of disruption” — Terence Mauri “The Five Minute Coach” — Lynne Cooper & Mariette Castellino “How to Develop Self-Confidence and Influence People by Public Speaking” — Dale Carnegie “Getting Things Done: how to achieve stress-free productivity” — David Allen
Tumblr media
These four books introduce aspects of good leadership, from having the right mindset and the ability to coach others, to being confident in yourself and able to influence people so they become highly productivity without becoming stressed.
“Nudge: improving decisions about health, wealth and happiness” — Richard H. Thaler & Cass R. Sunstein “A Field Guide to Lies and Statistics: a neuroscientist on how to make sense of a complex world” — Daniel Levitin “The Return of the Economic Naturalist: how economics helps make sense of your world” — Robert H. Frank “Predictably Irrational: the hidden forces that shape our decisions” — Dan Ariely “The Signal and the Noise: the art and science of prediction” — Nate Silver “Struck By Lightning: the curious world of probabilities” — Jeffrey S. Rosenthal “How Not To Be Wrong: the hidden maths of everday life” — Jordan Ellenberg “Coincidences, Chaos, and All That Math Jazz: making light of weighty ideas” — Edward B. Burger & Michael Starbird
Tumblr media
These are some great reads on the use of maths & stats to help understand the behaviours of people and society, how we misunderstand and misjudge our biases, and how to better use probabilities to inform our decisions and the way we evaluate risk and the predictability of outcomes.
“Wake Up! Escaping a life on autopilot” — Chris Baréz-Brown “The Rules Of Life” — Richard Templar “Happiness by Design: finding pleasure and purpose in everyday life” — Paul Dolan “The Algebra of Happiness ” — Scott Galloway
Tumblr media
Last, but by no means least, are some books about the importance of a positive and happy mindset; which is a good balance to have in the biz-tech industry because, as much as we work with logic and metrics and efficiency measures, we are not robots and should always invest in our mental health and wellbeing.
I’m curious and interested in anyone’s further recommendations on biz-tech., leadership or soft skills resources for data scientists. These and other resources are gathered at my datascienceunicorn.com blog³. Please hit me up!
P.S. As I’ve compiled this list I’ve realised the dominance of male authors in it and have made a mental note to seek out more female-authored books in these areas. All recommendations welcome.
