Courtney Act tells origin story of her and Vanity's wig empire

Courtney Act has recalled how she and Sydney drag sister Vanity co-founded their wig business Wigs by Vanity, and seeing RuPaul wearing one of their creations while she was on RuPaul’s Drag Race.
The Australian drag superstar sat down for a kiki with drag queen Delta Work on the lastest episode of her podcast Very Delta.
Delta asked Courtney about Wigs by Vanity, and Courtney shared the origin story of the drag wig business the two drag performers co-founded back in 2003.
“Credit where credit’s due, we were inspired by RuPaul’s wigs in the 90s,” Courtney explained.
“At that time, you could buy a lace front wig. But you couldn’t buy a lace front wig that was full of volume and drama… for drag, for a bigger-sized head. We were really trying to make a high volume production wig.
“We flew to China and we met with some people and started developing.”
At that time, Courtney said it was the support from Sydney’s top drag queens that helped them to get started.
“We went around to all of the elite drag queens of Sydney and we were like, we’re gonna get these lace fronts made. Do you want one?” she said.
“Everybody paid us for the wigs. I think there was 14 drag queens, all the top working showgirls. We used that money to pay the deposit on our first order.
“Every elite drag queen in Sydney was all of a sudden wearing a lace front wig. Everybody wanted one. Everybody wanted to know where to get them.
“Like the Kylie Jenner scarcity marketing, no one could get one and they wanted one.”

Courtney said Vanity was creative director innovating the designs of the wigs while Courtney “would go to the post office each day and fill out the international shipping forms.”
“I was coding an HTML website very badly to try and put the coding onto eBay, where we started,” she said.
“People from all around the world started finding out about the wigs and wanted them. Now we see an industry around wigs, makeup, costumes, and it’s great.
“We wanted to make wigs for drag queens by drag queens. In the beginning, people said, that’s a bit too specific. They said, maybe you should make wigs for women or people who have had cancer.
“We knew what we wanted to do… Then we didn’t know that drag would blow up the way it has.”
By the time Courtney Act appeared on RuPaul’s Drag Race season six, even RuPaul herself was wearing Wigs by Vanity.
“Season six was the first time that RuPaul wore a Wigs by Vanity on Drag Race,” Courtney recalled.
“Mathu Andersen and I had met up and discussed custom lace fronts for Ru. I remember saying to Mathu, I need a pattern of Ru’s head… He pulled out a duffel bag with a Madame Tussauds head.
“It was unpainted, like a double that never got used. It was just like a tan wax colour with no makeup on it and no eyeballs, just asleep. It was so unnerving.
“[After Drag Race] I was like, oh, I can’t tell anybody, but RuPaul’s wearing a Wig by Vanity. It was my little secret.”

Janet Jackson's makeup for "What's It Gonna Be?" was done by Mathu Andersen, who also did the makeup for TLC's "No Scrubs" video and worked extensively with RuPaul. Jackson was styled by Wayne Scot Lukas and her hair was done by Janet Zeitoun.

Everyone knows that TLC's 1999 "No Scrubs" video was heavily inspired by Michael and Janet Jackson's intergalactic clip for "Scream".

Mathu Andersen did TLC's makeup for the latter, and then did Janet's that same year. Interesting stuff~~
Btw, Janet's makeup in "Scream" was done by Kevyn Aucoin.

Anyways, famous Black costume designer/stylist June Ambrose styled Busta Rhymes for the "What's It Gonna Be" video. She also did "Mo' Money, Mo' Problems", "The Rain", Jay-Z's looks in "Apeshit", and Missy Elliott's Marie Claire spread that dropped last week!

Moral of the story is: the relationship between the past, present and future is traceable and your faves inspire your faves!
