thinking about my Nonexistent Pathologic Opera and how i would cast it again, so. here you go i guess. (this is by no means exhaustive and i am a bit torn on whether to do a hansel & gretel/turn of the screw/albert herring/etc. with the children or not.)
i... kind of want ludovic tézier as general block but also i think he would be good as big vlad. but i guess double casting is open to me so. both time.
(alternatively jonas kaufmann as block, because otherwise this is... so horribly bottom heavy vocally.)
on the Olgimskies Subject, matthew polenzani as young vlad. i’m specifically thinking of the stupid glazed expression that he constantly had as carlos.
(equally there IS a version where he is a baritone. but that’s the one where i’m playing him.)
étienne dupuis as artemy, because it would be fun.
thomas hampson as victor kain. this was just revealed to me by divine inspiration. he would be so good and so impossibly miserable.
i don’t know countertenors or haute-contres too well so:
philippe jaroussky as mark immortell? this is a difficult one. mark is doing so much but i want the baroque Thing and that’s jaroussky’s main interest musically.
michael spyres as bad grief? i am charmed by the idea of grief being played by somebody who has an objectively Weird vocal range
stefan kocan as the fellow traveler

holden madagame as daniil i feel like, for a few reasons

(this does have the unintended side effect of making things even more low voice-biased but it’s a fun idea.)

i initially thought chris maltman for saburov but actually he would be really fun as andrey. struggling to think of a sufficiently dissheveled-looking bass-baritone for peter, though.
the only thing stopping me from saying diana damrau as clara is that she is objectively too old but maybe her as eva?
