omg please drop all of your haircare knowledge, asking for a wavy/curly friend
HELLO YES I LOVE TALKING ABT THIS
So once upon a time I spent weeks on end on naturallycurly.com reading about wavy hair care specifically. I had just moved to Colorado six months before and my hair was Not loving the climate shift - the higher altitude results in dryer air and my hair was unmanageable and gross 100% of the time and I was sick of it. This article in particular was unbelievably helpful and it formed the basis of my research.
Here’s my before (spring 2019) and after (spring 2020):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I have not really been styling my hair and/or taking selfies since then because. Pandemic. Not much point in going to that much effort just to work from home lol)
Below the cut are more specific tips for washing/styling, featuring linked articles, tutorials, and products. I do want to acknowledge that these are adapted from the methods Black women have been using to care for their (type 4) hair for generations - the methods largely work for 2&3 hair types too, but with some modifications (e.g., white people don’t generally need to add extra oil to moisturize their hair between washes). If you’re going to buy products, buy from Black-owned companies whenever possible! Ecoslay and Inahsi are two of my favorites.
Some general tips:
Know the general state of your hair. Is it dense or thin? Are the strands coarse or fine? Is it damaged from color and/or heat? If it’s dense and/or coarse, you’ll want heavier products to penetrate the strands (like gels). If it’s thin and/or fine, you’ll want lighter products to not weigh them down (like mousses). If it’s damaged, you’ll want heavy stuff with a lot of protein to get it healthy.
Protein and moisture are key to balancing your hair. Protein deficiency/excess moisture results in hair that’s too soft and doesn’t hold a curl, while moisture deficiency/excess protein is when your hair feels crunchy without anything in it. Odds are if you’ve been using sulfate-heavy products you’ll need a heavy dose of both. My hair was so protein-starved that I had to do two gelatin treatments to build it back up but I haven’t had to do anything like that since
Ingredients: cut out sulfates and silicones. Sulfates dry out your hair and silicones coat the strands and weigh it down. Ingredient labels are your friends - sulfates are pretty easy to spot (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate) and silicones usually end in ‘cone’ (e.g., dimethicone). Some people also avoid heavy oils and butters (e.g., shea butter) but it really depends on how thick your hair is and how tight your curls are. I generally avoid them because they weigh down my looser curls but others with tighter curl patterns find them moisturizing and helpful. When in doubt, plug the ingredient list into Curlsbot to see what's curl friendly and what's not.
You do not need fancy products. I've linked some of my faves in here but there's plenty of inexpensive stuff available at drug stores. @coffeecurlygirl on Instagram has some highlights where she's reviewed curl-friendly drug store products. I am also American, so product availability may be different in other places. Curl Maven (based in Ireland) is a treasure trove of product information for Europe, as well as an excellent source for curly hair care in general.
Washing:
The most important part of washing your hair and scalp isn’t the cleanser, it’s the friction. Some people find success with cowashing, which is when you use a conditioner to wash your hair. This moisturizes your scalp and prevents your hair from drying out with the cleansing agents. Others like having something more cleansing and use a sulfate-free shampoo (usually containing something like sodium olefin 14-16 sulfonate). I tend to switch cleansers whenever I wash - I like the As I Am Dry and Itchy Scalp cowash, Trader Joe’s Tea Tree Tingle shampoo, and a medicated shampoo & conditioner 2 in 1 deal. (My scalp is dry 100% of the time, it’s a struggle.) I also recommend getting a shampoo brush to really scrub it in there.
Conditioning is probably the most important step in your routine. Again, knowing your hair is really important here! Conditioners come in a huge range of heaviness. I have relatively thick hair and I like heavy conditioners. You want one that you can apply to your hair and practically feel it detangle itself. I like Giovanni conditioners best - the Deeper Moisture and Tea Tree Triple Treat are both good. You want to avoid your scalp because that’s where buildup happens, so apply to the length of your hair and squish it in (tutorial) from the bottom to form your curl clumps and ensure it penetrates each strand.
Clarifying is also something you want to do every so often. You’ll end up with some buildup on your hair no matter what so this is when you need an actual cleanser to break it down. You can get clarifying shampoos (Bumble & Bumble has one but I’ve never used it) but honestly you just need a normal sulfate shampoo. I use Suave Daily Clarifying (do not use it daily) which is like a dollar and will last forever.
After clarifying you should deep condition to restore moisture to your hair. My favorite these days is Jessicurl, but when I first started out this whole thing I needed something super protein-heavy so I used Curl Junkie’s Repair Me. In the middle of the road is something like Inahsi which is relatively balanced between moisture and protein. It all depends on what your hair needs. Apply after washing, let it sit on your hair for 30-45 minutes (use a shower cap and ideally a heat cap for max effectiveness). Rinse and style as usual.
Don’t use a normal towel to dry your hair. Terrycloth is a one-way ticket to Frizz City. You can buy microfiber towels made specifically for hair but you can also just use a tshirt. Also don’t rub your hair when you dry it, instead squeeze the water out from the bottom to preserve your curl pattern and prevent frizz.
You probably don’t have to wash your hair as often as you think. I wash my hair once or twice a week and it gets the job done. It takes much longer for curly hair to get gross and oily than for straight hair - my sister’s hair is stick straight and she has to wash every day.
Styling:
The products you use are much less important than the technique. Youtube is super helpful for demonstrations of how to apply products - reallife+curlygirl has my favorite channel for this.
Leave in conditioner is a must. I recommend finding something that’s intended to be a leave in, but some people just leave in some of the conditioner they used in the shower. Same deal, apply only to your ends, not the scalp.
After the leave in, here’s where the fun begins! Apply your styling products when your hair is soaking wet (like, immediately after your shower). I like to use a curl enhancer (eg Ecoslay’s Orange Marmalade or Uncle Funky’s Curl Magic) and then a gel over top (pretty much any drug store brand works - Aussie, LA Looks, etc.). Squish it in like you did your conditioner and use a lot of water. I legit have a mixing bowl that I keep in my shower and fill partway with water when applying so I can scoop in more water as needed. Squish until you can’t really feel the product anymore and then you’re good.
Plop your hair to set the curls (tutorial). Let it sit for 15-20 minutes. If you’re feeling extra you can add more gel once you take it down.
Diffuse dry (tutorial). DO NOT use a hair dryer without a diffuser, the direct heat is too intense and won’t give you good results.
Your hair will probably be a little crunchy after you’re done. Wait however long you want/can (at least until your hair has cooled down and it’s 100% dry) and then scrunch it out. No ramen noodle hair and your curls have set!
This can all be super overwhelming but is super worth it. You can see how much it's benefited my hair and I have no regrets. Most of these tips are things that have specifically worked for me, but if you want a more general (and better explained) quick-start guide for curl care, Curl Maven is a fantastic resource. There are a zillion places on the internet to get information, but I strongly recommend just sticking to a few: Naturally Curly, reallife+curlygirl, and Curl Maven are the best I've found and seem to cover the most ground. There's also a thriving Instagram community but proceed with caution - big Mormon mom energy over there, for whatever reason.
Finally, while the curls are great, the biggest change I’ve seen has been in the overall health of my hair. Washing less means my hair doesn’t get dried out as quickly, and even when I don’t style my hair (leave-in only and air dry) my hair still has some volume which is nuts. You don’t have to do all the styling every time you wash to get the benefits.
Hope this is helpful! Godspeed, my friend.

How Does Maven Resolve Version Conflicts?
I needed to check out how to maven bom again and stumbled upon this interesting tutorial.
Something I did not know is that maven resolves version conflicts through the approach of "the nearest transitive dependency in the tree depth and the first in resolution":
Maven also indicates for each transitive dependency why it was omitted:
omitted for duplicate
omitted for conflict
Of course the simple way to override this resolution is to add the transitive dependency directly into the dependencies of the projet. Personally I do not find this to be a sexy solution and we'll eventually explore alternatives. But for now, let's stick with that solution.
Good luck with your dependency hell!

Download lance crack (license key) latest version RA9;
Tumblr media
💾 ►►► DOWNLOAD FILE 🔥🔥🔥 Intro and author notes Spoiler I made this build with a simple line of thought in mind, best described by the pictures below. And I consider the build itself highly recommendable for people on their first or 2nd league because of the following: - very fast clear speed will allow you to get some currency easily - no hard walls means you will be able to enjoy the content without being dependent on what you buy - There are unique items which will make the build full content viable, so no need to hunt for items with ideal affixes - you are quite tanky. Just kidding, you will need mark of submission 3 chaos in league start, 1 alchemy right now. Take this ring ASAP. Having "curse enemies with conductivity" on rings will still provide the pop effect, but you will lose quite a bit of DPS. Furthermore, the ring-around-the-rosie type of play used in ultimatums works wonders with arc unleash, so you will fall in love with it and regret when you will have to give it up. Once we reach red maps, we will need to switch to the main build, so make sure you will have your 3 exalts worth of currency ready to acquire the necessary items. Once you equip the 5L Ivory Tower you are ready to switch to crackling lance which has a different play style. End Game End game we're going to use crackling lance which even elementalists don't use. There are two things which make crackling lance good for this build: - with high intensity it can kill bosses fast - with low intensity it can kill mobs fast So the idea is to keep a low intensity on low life mobs, and start ramping up intensity for the really powerful ones. Regardless, once you fire a laser beam at a mob group, they will usually pop the whole group due to Profane Bloom. For bosses you will need to know the fights, where you can position yourself and when the nuke phase will start. So whenever you loose a boss fight and feel frustrated remember this: - you need to know better the fight, and this build will allow you to better learn it - this is a cheap build, it won't perform as well as a ex - ex build so no Hi boss, bye boss for you , unless you invest - ex We will aim for very fast cast speed in order to ramp up intensity ASAP, while also mitigate the mobility hit that spell echo gives us. If you get by a difficult batch eg: harvest spawns, legion monolith , stay at max range and fire in their direction. High intensity is useful for Yellow and Unique mobs. You will have incredible mana regain during farming due to Mind Drinker, Cinderswallow urn and "Mana and Mana gain on killing blow". This works very well for bosses which have high resist, and with diminishing returns for mobs. Fortunately for mobs we only care about cursing them so they can explode, since they have low hp. The build excels at clearing, however big bosses might be difficult if you are unfamiliar with the fights. Here are some tips to help you by: - Watch youtube videos on how to down emperors, Sirus, Maven etc. You need to understand their mechanics. Keep a spare boots just for these guys. Until you can nuke him fast enough you can use a "Cyclopean Coil" to be shock immune and you can replace your "Zealotry" with "Purity of Lightning". This will grant you good survivability which will aid you in the first phases - The flasks for bosses and the flasks for mapping are different. For extra dmg you can also throw in a sulphur flask. On Boss fights and open space maps you won't need it. You can re-adjust your tree to get that 1 extra node benefit. You are dependent on spells for ES leech, mobility and survivability, so a 4 seconds silence will prove fatal. Respec to take that group, replace "Mark of Submission" with "Sibyl's Lament", take Yugul in your pantheon, and make sure you don't use any curses you already removed mark of submission, also remove the elemental weakness triggered curse. That's why mark of submission will remain top tier even in late game. One downside of spell echo is that your character needs to cast two spells before moving, so using spell echo with low cast speed will make you feel immobile. That's why try to get your faster casting and cast speed nodes with a higher priority. Remember you are always on low life and have a low life pool, so although you are stun immune, cold attacks will always freeze you for a long long time. So aim to have that Rin prefixes ass soon as possible. With Divergent Arcane Surge we will actually have arcane surge up until the arcane cloak cooldown resets, so by spamming arcane cloak we're assured to have a level 20 arcane surge all the time, while benefiting from a 3k - 3. After all skills are placed, we will be left with a group of 4. The best use I found for that group is to use it on an archmage discharge, since crackling lance is directional, while discharge is omni-directional. A 4 power charge discharge during arcane cloak hits quite hard and it can allow you to dash and kill mobs with proximity shield OR you can use it when you are getting surrounded and don't want to turn your laser towards the enemy. As far as cluster passive goes, a lightning cluster jewel will provide the best dps boost. Look especially for the "Supercharge" passive. Take note that the "Lucky" modifier applies to non-critical hits, meaning that if you land a critical strike, even with elemental overload, you will deal less damage, so make sure not to max out your crit chance. Keep it at a decent level to get it fast but not too often. Power spikes Spoiler There are several items that will increased your damage significantly and if you approach a build like me where I take it to the limit and upgrade only after that, you will want to know what to aim for. You will start cruising through the mobs like it's nothing. This power spike won't be in damage, but you will become tanky all of a sudden. Get a Rumi's Concoction to go with it. Try to get your Large Radius Thread of Hope at this point. This will be expensive, I spent 5 ex on my 6L close to league start. Aim to get your first watcher eye around now so you improve your tankiness as well. Also you should get a Cinderswallow urn so you to help with your mana consumption. Aim to have your trigger socketed skills crafted on your wand. Expensive and not very impactful with level 1, however Awakened spell echo, despite being expensive AF, will provide that double damage option which will increase your DPS greatly. Try to get your "No freeze" boots now so you can be unstoppable. The lightning cluster and the curses cluster will be the ones to aim for at the beginning. The ailments and mana clusters are to be aimed in the next power spike. A Crusader crystal belt will provide you with tons a good boost of energy shield. You should be able to clear all content now, especially if you have in your reserve a Bottled Faith and Wise Oak to use on the big bosses encounters. For this you will want to have "Curse enemy with elemental weakness on hit" on a corrupted pair of gloves while keeping the Conductivity on the wand. Ideally you will want an unveiled wand with the trigger skill.

Maven
Gender: Demi-girl (uses she/they pronouns)
Age: Mid-twenties during campaign one. Will age when interacting with other campaigns, but will probably be physically in her mid-twenties still
Sexuality: Queer
Race: human or vampire (verse dependent)
Alignment: Chaotic neutral, leaning to chaotic evil
Class: warlock of Lord and Lady Briarwood (undead patron)
FC: Emily Perkins
Maven came from an average Whitestone family, having a father, a mother, an older brother, and a sister (her “Irish twin”, so to speak, barely 10 months younger than her). She was an astute girl with a voracious curiosity of everything around her, but that often got her into trouble. Her family often took the mantle that the best way to discourage this behavior was too ignore it. On the other hand, her sister Sarenn (named for the goddess Sarenrae) was encouraged for her more polite interest in the world, to the point where it took her all the way to the Alabaster Lyceum in Emon, where she became a wizard of enchantment. With the school being as expensive as it was, and her family not particularly wealthy, Maven was left in the dust. She worked in rather unappreciated labor to provide for her family, for her sister’s education, and then worked to help her aging parents, who had their children rather old and now were paying the price for it. But never once did she receive recognition from her parents. They ignored her when they could, and berated her when they couldn’t, asking why she couldn’t be more like Sarenn.
She was young, about 19, when the Briarwoods took over Whitestone, hanging the bodies of the De Rolo family in the once beautiful and fragrant Sun Tree. She counted those two who were missing, but made not comment of it, knowing her comments were supposedly never helpful. Her parents fought the change not out of love for the De Rolos, but some xenophobia of these nobles from the Dwendalian empire; their contention had them killed as well. Maven wrote to her sister with the news, but was met with a cold reply of blame for not saving them or fighting alongside them. It was when she’d briefly seen the body of her father rise and walk that her interest was piqued. …she had nothing more to lose now. Fearing her curiosity would once again get her in trouble, she took an audience with the Lord and Lady, asking to be taught, pledging anything and everything she could in return for the knowledge of awakening the dead.
The couple, yearning for a child of their own, saw a lost teenager, one who desperately needed someone, more than even the De Rolo daughter they had left alone to be their child. Unlike that little one, this one seemed to not be used to any sort of true care. So, Delilah and Sylas took pity, bringing her into their castle and giving her a taste of the power she could hold, making her their warlock and giving her a beginning in necromantic power. Delilah bolstered these gifts and helped her harness them, but there were plans that in a few years time, Maven would start to learn the wizardry of necromancy as well from her.
She spent several years there, but voiced an interest in travel before she started her training in full. Her patrons agreed, giving her gold for one year to travel wherever she pleased to learn whatever she pleased. When their warlock returned at the end of that year, they planned to ask her if she wished to be formally adopted as their heir, turning her into a vampire if she agreed. Maven wasn’t sure if in the moment it was curiosity, lingering envy, or her want to show off her new powers to her sister, but she found herself in Emon. However, once she was there, her curiosity and intrigue led her not toward the school, but towards the Clasp. With no experience in the world of crime, she wanted a closer look, and that closer look sucked her in. It was interesting to see the inner workings and see the downfall of corrupt organizations. She began taking on a role as an arcane expert, even if she was not very practiced; most of the members of the Clasp were more maritally trained rogues, so even her shaky “expertise” worked in that situation.
She found herself working more and more with a half-orc named Tarvis, an assassin rogue who seemed to be heading towards bigger and better things in the Clasp. He was intelligent and valued her more than some other members did. She was falling for him harder than she would have figured, the two of them jokingly flirting during heists. They even spent moments close to one another, getting closer to the idea of being together. At least it seemed like it. Tarvis never really breeched the idea in words, but it seemed he liked her. He was too focused on career in the Clasp, and sometimes that meant she was pushed to the wayside. All the same, she loved him. She had faith for a future. So, when her year was reaching a close and her patrons urged her home early because of new threats, she wanted to take him with her.
But they were both stuck. The Spireling Shenn wouldn’t let them leave that easy, would they?
And yet there was a heist they were about to embark on together. A job against a powerful woman. She had no loyalty to the Spireling, nor members of the Clasp, so she saw her out. A bargain. She went to the Shrew, offering the time and the end goal of the mission, asking in exchange for her and Tarvis to be allowed to leave, while the others were killed. The assumption would be everyone on the mission, including Maven and Tarvis, died. That would allow them to run away to Whitestone to be together and for her to fulfill her duty to her patrons.
But not all went according to plan. Two more on the team planned to dissent, taking the emerald they were after and killing the team. When this was found out, Tarvis was furious for this betrayal, and ordered the two halflings to be killed, making the killing blow on his own friend because she fell in love. Maven felt betrayed herself, knowing likely, he would kill her if her plot was revealed to him. She imagined the scimitar in her gut and the whip around her next for a moment too long as Adelaide Bluebutton, the Shrew, entered the room. The older woman gave the younger a signal to take Tarvis and leave, as she explained to the group about the “little birdies” who sang to her and revealed the truth. But Maven yelled as she backed out of the cone of the spell the Shrew was beginning to cast.
“Forget the deal. Kill them all! They mean nothing to me!”
But as the life left Tarvis, Delweth, and Obby, she realized her mistake. Feigning simply the vulture-like nature of a warlock with an undead patron, she collected trinkets from the bodies. The cut off hand of Adelaide’s own granddaughter. An eye from Dren. Vertebrae of Delweth’s spine. A chunk of beard on dried skin, like moss, from Obby. And from Tarvis, she collected a tusk and the end of his ponytail, one for her goal and one for her the inside of her choker locket. The sorcerer didn’t think a thing of it, as the parts would at least be put to use if a warlock of the undead was using them as components. That was not the plan, however. The plan was that Maven would use these parts to bring back the souls, as her patroness had told her there were ways to bring back the dead with nothing more than a fingernail.
But it wasn’t long after she got to Whitestone that all began to crumble. The surviving son of the De Rolos had come. Come with powerful friends that took down the Briarwoods with ease. Her patrons, the closest thing she had to family was dead. So, she took what she could of her patron and patroness’ things, especially books on necromancy, and ran. She knew she would not be left alive if the merciless Percival de Rolo III found out who she was. So, she wandered for anything she could get her hands on to help her pursuit. Another patron, an education in necromancy. Anything. Who knew if she could bring back her patrons, that would be a goal soon enough, but now she needed to bring back those members of the Screwjob, specifically her dear Tarvis. She needed him once more.
And she will have him.
(In some verses, Sylas Briarwood will be able to get ahold of Maven to turn her before he dies. In these verses, she is a fully fledged vampire, and will remain frozen at her CR1 age, even if interacting with characters from campaigns set years in the future.)

Vladmir and Sona get caught up in a storm and must stay sheltered together until it passes.
The maven had to admit, she didn’t always have the best of lucks when traveling, it always started to rain or snow, depending on the place she was traveling to. But this time it wasn’t simply rain that had caught her, but a downpour that had brought a lot of mud and fallen trees to the  road, blocking it.
Sona turned her horse around, thankfull that she had passed by an abandoned house not too long ago, thinking about taking shelter there until the rain was over. Hopefully it would pass by quick and she wouldn’t run into any more trouble.

Family Fights - Chapter Sixteen
Tumblr media
Summary:  Even the strongest bond, the most loving family, can be broken by nightmares, and the librarian is soon to learn this. As she learns sinister things about a person who she had thought was lost forever, she realizes she will need the help of another witch to get her family back.
Notes: Guess who’s once again posting fanfic during exams week

Five months later
The air of the woods hummed with their magic.
The birds had all flown away as soon as they began their practice, except for a handful of owls and ravens, who looked at them as though they knew perfectly what they were doing. Other than their hushed incantations and the crackle of their spells, silence filled the forest. Even the bugs sat still to watch the witches.
Dueling was a great way to improve her control and strengthen her, Hilda had found. So every other Saturday, instead of an usual lesson, the librarian would take her all the way to the forest for them to practice. After all, it was way more recluse than any park in Trolberg, and they couldn’t very well duel inside the library or Maven’s house. Besides, Woodman liked to come and watch them sometimes.
“Be more conscious of how the blow is going to hit me!” Maven advised after the spell that her apprentice had shot at her was quickly absorbed by her wards. “But you’re doing very good in the pronunciation! Your spells are coming out great.”
Hilda smiled and nodded. Getting ready for the spell that the librarian would cast, she squinted at the book which she held on her left hand. Though her mentor was experienced enough that she didn’t need to say the words out loud for spells like these, let alone consult a spell book, Hilda was still working with verbal incantations. With her other hand, she held her wand, which she used to strengthen her shield shield in case she couldn’t cast the counter spell in time.
Purple sparks flew off of the librarian’s wand like fireworks, and in response Hilda repeated one of her favorite incantations, gronn barriere beskytter meg, which made a gigantic flower appear in front of her like a floating barrier. The sparks completely destroyed it, but they didn’t reach Hilda’s shield.
“That worked.” Maven said as she walked closer. “But the spell I shot you was easily redirectable. Your magic would have been better used if you had channeled the spell and shot it back at me. This way, you just spent your energy in a barrier that can’t serve you anymore.”
When she was close enough, she looked for a specific page in Hilda’s book, reaching the beginning of another section of spells.
“Any of these would have been good. Do you want us to study them next?”
“Yes, that sounds good!”
“Great.” Returning to her position a few meters in front of her student, the librarian came back to defence stance. “Oh, and since it was a fire spell, it would have gone even better if you returned it with a water one. You are doing amazing with earth spells, and it’s perfect that you’re developing your strengths, but I don’t want you to get too dependent on one element, okay?”
Hilda could not help but look down at her bare feet. For their duels, she always chose to be leave her boots at the side. It helped her feel grounded at all times, as well as draw energy from the earth, but she knew that she had to learn how to be ready to cast on any circumstances. Maven allowed her to be barefoot, but she made sure Hilda understood that she should not continue like that when she got more skilled.
They had been dueling for some time, sending spells back and forth between each other since the sun had been high in the sky, so Hilda knew this would probably be one of the last times she’d cast before they called Johanna’s to give them a ride back home. As such, she wanted to finish off with something more elaborate. There was this one spell that she’d been itching to try, especially since she suspected that Maven would love it, so she decided to cast it.
“Falske udode angrep.” She pronounced the words carefully, paying attention to how they felt in her mouth; the feeling you got from things was very important in witchcraft. As she did so, she motioned her wand to make a coffin shape in the air, and in each of the six points where two lines met a glow of spectral light gathered.
“Falske udode angrep.” Hilda repeated, and felt herself surrendering to the spell. She was swaying almost imperceptibly from side to side as her magic worked to turn the balls of light into skulls, and her eyes were closed in both peace and concentration.
As she kept chanting the incantation, the skulls advanced towards the librarian, who gasped and twirled her wand. A golden fox rose from it, gleaming from the magic it was made of. Ferociously, it attacked the skulls as they came, but it wasn’t quick enough to stop all of them. Maven then resorted to throwing strong blasts of fire at the attackers, however she found that they were way too strong to be taken down that way, being continuously fed by Hilda’s magic.
Two of them were already working on destroying her personal shield when she realized, feeling both stunned and proud, that she’d have to use an advanced spell to beat off the energy creatures that Hilda had cast. Lifting her wand high above her head, its tip pointing at the sky, she stomped her foot and proclaimed the incantation loudly.
“Livets bolger beskytter denne manebundne sjelen!”
As soon as she said the last word, purple waves began flowing from her wand, reminiscent of the movement in a pond after a rock was thrown in it. The skulls that had remained emitted a piercing screech as they died out, turning into thick, black goo that was absorbed by the ground, and the waves made even the branches of the trees around them shake.
Maven took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment to collect herself. She’d never even used that spell outside of training battles with her mother, and it used up a lot of her energy. Not only that, but her wards were also damaged from Hilda’s attack. She’d have to put them up again later.
She was still panting, completely stupefied by the strength of the spell Hilda had managed to cast, when she realized that the girl must be feeling its effects too, especially since Maven had thrown another powerful charm at her. Running to her student, the librarian tuned in into her energy and realized that her wards were marred as well.
“Hilda, how are you feeling?” She asked urgently, kneeling down in front of the girl and putting her hands on her shoulders.
“Whoa! I feel… kind of surprised, to be honest. I didn’t know that would work so well!”
“You are okay, then?”
“Yes, of course. Kind of tired, actually, like I’ve just run a lot, but I’m fine.” When she came to think of it, her heart was beating madly, and she felt like she could fall asleep any time, but it was nothing that justified the look of shocked wonder that the librarian had on her eyes. After a moment, during which Maven seemed to be deep in thought, she stood up without taking her hands from Hilda’s shoulders.
“That was a very advanced spell.” She said, her breathing already beginning to return to its normal rhythm. “How did you learn it?”
Hilda shrugged, and though that wasn’t what she was trying to do, it dislodged Maven’s hands from her. The witch crossed her arms and hugged herself, avoiding eye contact, a small gesture that in the months they’d spent together Hilda had come to recognize as nervousness.
“I saw it in the book yesterday and thought I’d try it. Why? Did it come out wrong?”
“No, you’ve cast it almost perfectly.”
“But you don’t look happy at all.”
After being called out on that, Maven met her student’s eyes and made herself smile.
“Sorry for being rude, Hildie. You did amazing and I’m very proud of you for that. I have something on my mind, that’s all.”
She sighed and squatted down on the ground, not at all surprised when Hilda did the same by her side, looking concerned for her. The girl’s power had been building as they trained, and Maven was aware of each step she accomplished in her path. Still, it had been easy to pretend that there was no end objective to this, that there wasn’t a goal they were trying to reach, and just as easy to tell herself that if the moment finally came, than it would be only in a very long time, in a way that kept Maven’s hopes alive without her having to face the looming possibility of failure or any harm coming to Hilda. But after this, it would be stupid to deny it that her apprentice was already capable of helping her.
“What sort of ‘something’?” She asked, and Maven felt a pang of guilt at the worry in her voice. Hilda was the child and the student in their relationship, she shouldn’t have to worry about her.
This was the moment she’d been waiting for. The reason she’d began training the girl in the first place. The chance to finally save her sister. And yet, she hesitated for some reason. Maybe it was the fear of failure, or the resentment over knowing that even though she loved her sister, Myra didn’t deserve a second chance when going away was her choice and so was refusing her help for the first times. That was, however, not her decision to make.
“You are ready.” She revealed after deliberation. “You are apt to help me perform the Soul Spell.”
Hilda’s eyes widened, and she jumped up to her feet. There was no fear on her face, only amazement as she considered what that meant.
She’d done it. After all those months, she was ready.
“That’s amazing!” She chirped, but frowned when the librarian still didn’t get up. “It is good, isn’t it? Is there any problem?”
“No, not really. I suppose I’m just a bit overwhelmed. But with that being said… Hilda, will you help me perform the ritual?”
Squaring her shoulders, Hilda felt herself standing taller. Maven was by far the most powerful person she knew, and one of her best friends. She’d done so much for her, and now Hilda had the chance to be the one to come to her aid and show the librarian that her hard work training her had paid off.
“Without the shadow of a doubt!”
_#_#_#_
It took Maven little time to realize that she was the most nervous between them all.
After they called Johanna to pick them up, the two witches spent some time grounding, to return the chaotic energy that they had gathered during the duel back to the earth and warding, since both of their shields had been damaged. When the woman arrived, Hilda was excited to tell her about how she was ready for the Soul Spell, and though there was a flash of concern in her eyes so quick that Maven nearly missed it, she looked way more proud of her child than worried. And if Johanna wasn’t worried, Maven told herself, she shouldn’t be either. The worst case scenario was getting worked up for nothing if her sister did not cooperate.
They would need a whole day to properly prepare themselves to cast the spell, and the next day was as good as any. Hilda said she didn’t have any pressing schoolwork to be done that weekend, so it was settled that she would spend the night over at Maven’s so that they could begin as early as needed. Their first stop after Johanna picked them up in the forest was at Hilda’s house, so she could pack the things she’d need for the night and tell Alfur where she’d be. Next, all three of them went to Maven’s place, where the witches sprawled themselves on the couches, still resting from the energy they’d spent on the duel. It didn’t escape Maven’s notice that Johanna had seemed amused by that.
For quite some time, they didn’t do much, just chatted and rested as the sun lowered down into the horizon. Maven ordered food and they all ate together, arranging the last details with Johanna. After the spell was cast, she’d still need to call Myra forth so she could take the help, and Maven insisted that Hilda wasn’t present for that second part. However much the girl protested, eventually her mother and mentor made her understand that it could be dangerous, and so it was arranged for Johanna to be on Maven’s street just after sunset, so she could be with Hilda when she went home after the spell.
“Good luck, and be safe.” Johanna said as she brought her daughter into a tight embrace when the time came for her to leave. “Call me if you need anything, okay?”
“I will, mum. Good night.”
After releasing Hilda, Johanna hugged Maven as well, making her blush at the show of affection and tentatively return it.
“You too, Mave. I believe in you.”
And then she was gone, leaving mentor and apprentice alone with their duty.
_#_#_#_
“So… what’s the schedule for tomorrow?” Hilda asked when she entered the room. Maven was going through the uncomfortable process of getting her sister’s bed ready for the first time in years, and she’d asked her apprentice to put their wands in the backyard, near the rosemaries. It was beneficial for wands to soak in moonlight every once in a while, and it was especially important considering their plan for the next day. Besides, she’d wanted to be alone when she put away the picture of her family that was in a frame at Myra’s bedside table.
Even though now it was clear that her sister had ripped it herself, at the time she and her mother had though that one of the Marra had torn it to pieces, and they had glued it back together. It didn’t hurt so much to look at it anymore, but it would feel too vulnerable to let Hilda see it.
“Well, first off will be grounding. I’m afraid we’ll do a lot of meditating tomorrow. It is crucial for us to be in our most connected state of mind possible, it will help us be clear minded at the time of the ritual.”
“Makes sense.” After noticing Freya rubbing her tail on her legs, Hilda picked the catowl up and scratched her ears. She had quite warmed up to Hilda over the time, and the girl was happy to have her nearby. There was nothing like a fluffy animal to ease her nerves, which did exist due to the importance of their situation.
“After breakfast we’ll see to the spell components. We need to cleanse and charge every crystal and carve sigils onto candles. Obviously we’ll also study the ritual during the afternoon. It should be cast at moonrise.”
Nodding, Hilda sat down on her bed, and the librarian sat down on hers, picking up her comforter and bringing it to cover her legs.
“Just a warning-” She said as she lied down. “Freya is looking awfully comfy in your arms, she’ll probably want to sleep in your bed.”
Lying down herself, Hilda noticed that Freya did indeed make herself comfortable by her pillow and she chuckled.
“It’s okay.”
“In that case, we should go to sleep. We begin at dawn.”
Maven pressed the light switch and cast the room in darkness. Though the curtains were open, Maven didn’t live near many other houses, so the only light that came through was that of the moon and the stars. Hilda shifted on her bed as little as she could, so as not to disturb Freya, but it didn’t stop Maven from being aware that minutes later she still hadn’t fallen asleep. She tuned into her energy, and felt her unease.
“Is something bothering you?” Maven asked quietly so as not to startle her, and the little light that came through the window was enough for her to see Hilda turning to face her. So many nights she’d talked to Myra like this, both of them exhausted on their beds but still with their heads too filled by thoughts to go to sleep without sharing them. Seemed ironic to have this experience with the one who would help save her.
“It’s just normal anxiety, I suppose.” When she began this journey, she’d been nothing but excited for this day to come. But she was much wiser and more experienced now, and she knew the importance of the ritual they’d do. She knew that if they weren’t careful, it might go wrong no matter how well intentioned she was. “You are a bit too, aren’t you? I noticed you’ve been tense. Is it because you’re also worried I won’t be able to make it?”
Maven stiffened when she said that. She’d rarely known Hilda to be anything but confident. If she was offended by the possibility of her mentor worrying about her, however, it didn’t show on her voice. It sounded like she was only pointing out a fact, and that even though she hoped it would work and knew her teacher believed in her, she’d accepted that failure was a possible outcome for every situation in life. Maven supposed it did show how much she’d grown, but it had caught her by surprise.
“I wouldn't have said you were ready if I didn’t think you were, Hildie.”
“I know.” She could practically hear the girl smile. “But that’s not what I asked. You can be ready for something and still not be able to make it in the end.”
Maven shook her head, although she didn’t know if Hilda could see her in the gloom.
“You are right. But… that’s not the reason why I’ve been on edge today.”
“Then what is it?”
“Let’s just say” She sighed. “That you’ve never been the one I was worried about.”
Turning onto her right arm to face the wall, Maven hugged her pillow and let herself ignore the rest of the world. A calm feeling washed over her like waves, and soon both witches were sinking into a deep slumber.

spielen-service
Having scratched up numerous microservices in Python, I figured that -- being an old hand in Java -- I would run into few headwinds in bringing up a microservice running on the JVM.  How wrong could I be.
I cite a few of the issues I ran into:
* Dependency management through Maven.  Getting the right combination of inclusions / exclusions, version numbers, and correct vendor implementations was a mess.  Suffice it to say that I built, re-built, and scrutinized dependency trees many times over.
* Java versioning itself was a bit of a hassle.  AWS SDKs require 1.8+, but my IDE -- Visual Studio Code -- requires 11+.  I went with 11, but that also meant tweaking my shell environment in OSX (for command-line execution). * The Netflix embedded server Eureka -- widely referenced in microservice examples on the net -- was a bit more straightforward, but it did not work out of the box.
In any case, in hopes that future programmers might avert these and other hurdles in setting up microservices in Java, I’ve open-sourced a prototype application that interacts with the AWS SDKs (S3) and runs on Eureka and Spring Boot.  It’s called spielen-service, and is open-sourced under the MIT license.  Enjoy!

SBT - Scala’s ((mistaken as) NOT SO) Simple Build Tool
The first thing that one notices when jumping into Scala development is its utterly complicated build tool. Complications arise due to several reasons (and reasons different for different people, I’m sure) but, a consistent gripe that people seems to have is the syntax used in the build definition file (typically build.sbt although, any *.sbt would work at the root of the project) for people not very familiar with some operators/constructors that the Scala community heavily relies on and, the monstrous amount of time it takes to get the first build started. The syntax seems strange at times even for Scala developers not familiar with sbt, that is because sbt is a DSL (Domain Specific Language). Let’s dive in to understand the essential basics!
[When I first ran “sbt run”, I wasn’t sure if things were even working at all, stared into the terminal for few 10s of minutes for several hours and nothing showed up. Google searches showed that it was a common problem! Although, in my case it was a conflict between the versions of Scala and sbt that were individually installed on my machine!]
With that welcoming note, let’s dive into the sbt world - it is bound to make your life easier if you know what you are doing. And it is an extremely powerful build tool.
I highly recommend that you read the sbt getting started guide completely before starting your project (this post is not a replacement as there are several details that are important and won’t be discussed here). I’m assuming that you’ve installed a recent version of sbt already. I’m writing this to provide a quick start (which might be a lot quicker than the “Quick Start Guide” that sbt documentation provides.)
Getting Started With “sbt new”
The recent versions of sbt (later than 0.13) provide a quick way to kick start your Scala projects  -
$ sbt new sbt/scala-seed.g8
sbt uses g8 templates to create the basic structure of your project. There are tons of useful ones available and you can create your own as well. If you come from the Java world, think of these as Maven archetypes of sorts. The command above would ask you for some project details like the project name, my project’s name is: Whipp. (For reasons unknown to humanity!)
The previous command should set up a simple Scala project for you with a directory structure that resembles that used by Maven:
src/[main, test]/[scala, java, resources]
$ tree -L 2 . ├── build.sbt ├── project │   ├── Dependencies.scala │   ├── build.properties │   ├── plugins.sbt │   ├── project │   └── target ├── src │   ├── main │   └── test └── target    ├── scala-2.12    └── streams9 directories, 4 files
The file that would the focus of our discussion in this post is the build.sbt file - the build definition.
(Don’t forget to add target/ to your .gitignore before you make your initial commit.)
Running the project:
Building and running the project is simple:
$ sbt #takes you to the sbt shell from where you can issue commands like run [info] sbt server started at 127.0.0.1:5522 sbt:Whipp> run #The task we wish to execute.
This would compile the project files and start the project. This could take a while if you are running your first project. Patience trumps hate!
Some cool things about the sbt shell are its tab-completion feature and history. It essentially behaves like your terminal’s shell. Pretty cool huh?
You could also provide tasks in a “batch mode” like this:
#takes sbt:Whipp> clean compile run
sbt provides a continuous build option. Append a task with ~ and sbt would watch for changes in your files, auto compile them and, execute the task - for instance, ~run would add efficiency to your development setup!
Here’s a list of all the commands available for you to use: https://www.scala-sbt.org/1.x/docs/Command-Line-Reference.html
The build definition - build.sbt
This is the most important and interesting section of this post so grab your coffee and read on! The key element in understanding the build.sbt file is that it is not just a properties file but, valid Scala code (well, valid sbt DSL code to be precise but, you get the drift!)
Read the generated *.sbt file with that perspective first and see what you can gather from it:
import Dependencies._ lazy val root = (project in file(".")).  settings(    inThisBuild(List(      organization := “com.snortingcode”,      scalaVersion := "2.12.3",      version      := "0.1.0-SNAPSHOT"    )),    name := “Whipp”,    libraryDependencies ++= Seq(      scalaTest % Test)  )
(Depending on which seed project you start with, this might look a little different. Hold on for a while and it would make a lot of sense to you!)
Let’s first look at what the below line is all about:
“lazy val root = (project in file(“.”))”
We are declaring a lazy value ‘root’ which happens to be everything followed by “lazy val root” in this case. Your build file is composed of several “val” and/or “lazy val”, these would typically fall under these 3 categories:
SettingKey[T]
TaskKey[T]
InputKey[T]
In fact, if you take a look at the config-classes under the target/ directory, you would find a cache file that has all the lazy val and val that you defined in your build.sbt file. You can also use the sbt shell to see what these keys are.
With that in mind, if you look at the build.sbt again, you’d see that we have a lazy val called root that contains the settings for each “project” in the current directory [project in file(“.”)]
Some of these are generic properties like the name of the project, organisation, etc. These are unlikely to change (it is a common practice to extract them out to a val and add it to the project.settings.)
In that sense, most of the build definition is just a bunch of key-value pairs => some help define things, some do interesting stuff. The value “name” is an example of a key that defines something.
A quick digression: If you try to assign a non-String value to “name”, you would get a typeMismatch error. The key “name” (which we did not define ourselves) comes along with the implied imports => sbt._, Keys._
Let’s try to add some interesting key that does something. Naturally, we would turn to a TaskKey[T]. Add these lines to your build definition:
lazy val doSomething = taskKey[Unit](“I do something cool!”)
Now, add this key to your settings. The updated build.sbt might look something like this:
import Dependencies._ lazy val root = (project in file(".")).  settings(    inThisBuild(List(      organization := “com.snortingcode”,      scalaVersion := "2.12.3",      version      := "0.1.0-SNAPSHOT"    )),    name := “Whipp”,    libraryDependencies ++= Seq(      scalaTest % Test),   doSomething := {println(“Look what I did!”)}  ) lazy val doSomething = taskKey[Unit](“I do something cool!”)
We defined a TaskKey[Unit] named doSomething using the method in the sbt DSL - taskKey[T]. Once you enter the sbt console (by restarting the sbt shell), you would notice that you can call this new task from the shell, simply by typing the task’s name - doSomething.
sbt:Whipp> doSomething Look what I did! [success] Total time: 1 s, completed 8 Feb, 2018 1:59:01 PM
You can thus, create a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph) using these tasks and create a workflow for your project! Sweet!
A neat way to see what a task is doing is to “inspect” it:
sbt:Whipp>inspect compile [info] Task: xsbti.compile.CompileAnalysis [info] Description: [info] Compiles sources. [info] Provided by: [info] {file:/Users/prasoonjoshi/code/whipp/whipp/}root/compile:compile
(The actual output is rather long, so I’ve truncated it. Each [info] tells you important information about that task. (Try this out with the doSomething task you created just now and see if everything makes sense!)
We talked about the SettingKey[T] and TaskKey[T] a little bit, what is this InputKey[T] all about? Well, for now, you can just think of the InputKey as a method to take input from the user to create tasks on the fly (simple and powerful - we’ll talk about this in a future post soon!)
Let’s jump to the libraryDependencies
Yes, you know what they are! The essential information about this section of your build definition’s settings are:
+= is a method to append the provided dependency to the old libraryDependencies and return the new one!
libraryDependencies ++= Seq[<your list of dependencies>] is another way you’ll see the dependencies often defined in the build definition. (This is what our example build definition has.)
sbt uses Ivy for dependency resolution. The % that you see in the syntax below are sbt DSL’s methods that construct the Ivy module Id.
To define a new libraryDependency, you need to define the dependency first, then add it to the list of dependencies.
Here’s an example that adds mongo awesomeness to your project:
val mongo = "org.reactivemongo" %% "reactivemongo" % "0.12.6" libraryDependencies += mongo# # This line is part of my plugins.sbt file under the project directory. addSbtPlugin("com.typesafe.play" % "sbt-plugin" % "2.6.7") libraryDependencies += ws
Of course, you can add the val directly to the settings without declaring it first. See what works best for you!
I promised earlier that everything in your build definition is just a key (SettingKey, TaskKey, InputKey). See what the libraryDependencies key shows you on the sbt shell and see if that makes sense :)
A final note on the evaluation order in your build definition file: Since the build definition is just a DAG which is interspersed with “lazy val”, you should expect a sequential processing, with lazy val(s) evaluated only when they are required.
A point to keep in mind is that the SettingKeys are evaluated once, TaskKeys are evaluated each time the task is executed (these would usually have side-effects as you can see).
There are several beautiful aspects of sbt that we can’t explore here in this quick guide. I would encourage you to check out the documentation and Josh Suereth’s great talk on YouTube.

With its two-layer steel construction, the door provides peace of mind that your home is more secure. Its quiet operation will be appreciated by anyone with a bedroom above the garage.
Reviewer Mikey writes, “Excellent door for the money! I was about 4 hours from start to finish installing my door. Instructions are very thorough and easy to follow. I’m very pleased with the ease of operation and most of all … it looks great on my 12’ x 20’ garage.”
3. Leaf blower/gutter cleaner
The built-in cord lock helps keep the cord attached to the blower/vacuum while in use.
homedepot.com
This 12-amp, multitasking maven serves as a leaf blower/vacuum/gutter cleaner (homedepot.com, $102) all in one.

On average, nationally, gutter cleaning costs between $75 and $125 depending on the size of your home and the number of trees shading it, so this gadget may pay for itself in just one cleaning.
One Home Depot customer writes, “Just what I needed to stay off high ladders.”
4. Air purifier
Wi-Fi connectivity allows you to monitor and adjust this tower regardless of your location.

Best of all—we love the ability to control it on the phone. We have ours on top of a shelf (so that our small children can’t play with it) and instead of having to take it down each time to turn it on/off, we use the remote feature on the phone.”
5. Shelving unit
All hardware is included for assembly and stacking.
wayfair.com
Want to go into autumn and winter with sweaters and jeans in perfect order? This modular storage stackable shelf unit (wayfair.com, $98) can help streamline your overcrowded closet.

6. Smart thermostat
This gadget learns your favorite settings and automatically adjusts itself.
homedepot.com
Make your home more energy-efficient as you save on heat and air conditioning from the first day you install this unobtrusive Nest Thermostat (homedepot.com, $169).
Reviewer jlkine92 writes, “I love the minimalist look and the fact that the screen is blank until you walk up to it or past it. The thermostat blends in very well with my gray walls. The app is great! You can program a schedule, view your energy usage, utilize eco settings and so much more.”
7. Water-saving shower head
This shower head saves water.
amazon.com
To curb your water heating bill, consider this low-flow shower head (amazon.com, $40), which uses patented technology to create a spray that has the feel of a much higher-flowing shower head while reducing water usage by 40%.
Reviewer C. Smith raves, “Excellent shower head. I was very worried about the water pressure on these things, considering I was going from some super powerful shower head to this little low water one. I gotta say: it DEFINITELY surprised me.”
8. Carpet and furniture cleaner
Strong suction removes dirt and stains.
homedepot.com
To tackle dirt and dust indoors, this upright carpet cleaner (homedepot.com, $168) packs the high-performance power of a professional cleaning product. Its large-capacity water tank holds 1.25 gallons so you don’t waste time emptying and refilling it midjob. Designed with pet owners in mind, this tool will save you from tossing that carpet after an accident.
Reviewer Erin writes, “We have some kitties and after one of them got sick we thought our light beige carpet was history. We were blown away after using the Pet Plus. We gave it lots of time and really cleaned it thoroughly. All the stains were gone, and quite honestly it looked like a new carpet. Did I mention the carpet is 10 years old?”
