Masterlist
Taglist: @thequeenofthewinter, @oblivions-dawn
Word count: 1,343
A/N: Depending on life and the job, I may end up catching up on the backlog. I'm going to do my best to stay ahead, though. I hope you enjoy this chapter and let me know if you want to be added to the taglist :)
“Lass, come here for a second,” Brynjolf shouted at Adi, just entering the Cistern from the Flagon. “I have a job for you.”
“Figured,” she said. “The two days off was generous.”
“You deserved it,” he grinned. Adi felt the newly familiar feeling of butterflies in her stomach as she approached him, silently cursing herself for it. “You’re off to speak with Maven Black-Briar. She asked for you by name.”
“For business, I presume?”
“Right,” he nodded.
“What does she want me to do?”
“That’s between you and Maven,” Brynjolf crossed his arms. “And I prefer to keep it that way. Don’t worry too much, her dealings usually involve quite a lot of gold. She’s waiting for you in The Bee and the Barb. Don’t make her wait for too long.”
“I’ll be back in a bit, then!”
Adi ran off to the tavern and up to the second level, and approached the woman. When their eyes met, Adi held back a look of shock. The resemblance was striking, the biggest difference being how aged Maven was. It was undoubtedly from stress, and the Nord woman’s expression was set in a permanent scowl. Adi, on the other hand, looked youthful. Her resting face was that of neutrality and boredom.
Their facial structures were identical, although Maven had a lighter skin tone, and both women had thin almond eyes. Adi’s irises were mismatched - one a bright shocking blue, and the other a deep honey gold. Mavens were matching, both irises of a golden colour, although duller. It got the half-Nord thinking, as she grew up unaware of her parent’s identities, but Adi chose to push the thought aside.
She noticed a flash of astonishment on Maven’s face before it went back to the scowl, and Adi opted to remain emotionless. If anything, showing any emotion to Maven would reveal any and all weaknesses to her. “So… you’re the one. Hmm… you don’t look so impressive.”
“How about we skip the conversation?” Adi wanted to get this interaction over with sooner rather than later.
“You're a firebrand, aren't you?” Maven sniffed, seeming a little impressed. Adi found her hard to read. “It's about time Brynjolf sent me someone with business sense. I was beginning to think he was running some sort of beggar's guild over there.”
“You have no faith in the Guild?” she spoke before thinking, itching to know more. Maven raised an eyebrow, the thief immediately thinking the worst. Instead, she got an answer.
“Faith? I don't have faith in anyone.” Her scowl turned into a sneer. “All I care about is cause and effect. Did the job get done and was it done correctly? There's no gray area.”
“You won’t have a problem with me,” Adi assured her, genuinely wanting to impress the Black-Briar. If anything, she just didn’t want to end up dead.
“I hope not. This is an important job.” She seemed to study Adi closely, watching every movement, twitch, and reaction like a hawk. “I have a competitor called Honningbrew Meadery that I want to put out of business. I also want to know how they managed to get the place up and running so quickly.”
“Where do I begin?”
“Head to the Bannered Mare in Whiterun and look for Mallus Maccius. He'll fill you in on all the details.”
Adi turned to leave when Maven spoke again. “One more time in case I wasn’t clear. You butcher this job, and you’ll be sorry.”
After giving a slight nod, Adi went back down the stairs of the Tavern and quickly headed back to the Cistern to prepare for the trip.
“Lass, what did Maven tell you about.”
“I’m to go to Whiterun for a job,” Adi recounted the conversation as she packed for the trip. Brynjolf sat on her bed and listened, noticing the annoyance laced in her voice. “It’ll be nice to visit my Housecarl and be back in Breezehome for a bit. But the reason being a job for Maven? Not fond of it."
“Wait… you’re Thane of Whiterun?” One thing he knew about Adi, was her dislike for heroism. She would always talk about how people only became Thane for the title, that they never did anything for the Hold. Hearing that she was one was quite odd.
“I’ll tell you about that another time,” Adi shook her head. Judging by her tone and expression, the Title wasn’t bestowed on her willingly. If that was true, it made more sense. “One more thing before I head out.”
“What do you need?”
Adi looked at her best friend and hesitated. They had been deliberating on her lineage for a long time, and if her parents were even alive. She wasn’t keen on the idea, but the half-Nord looked too much like Maven to ignore it. “I look strikingly similar to Maven. I have my suspicions, but I’d appreciate your help in looking into that.”
“I’ll see what I can do while you’re away.”
***
The day trip to Whiterun had Adi choosing to travel via carriage, wanting to avoid camping as much as possible. She had done enough of it in her life, and the Dragonborn learned to hate it more than enjoy it. While sleeping on the carriage wasn’t the most comfortable, she knew it was the safer - and quicker - option.
What she was really looking forward to was her reunion with Lydia, her Housecarl in the Hold. The Nord woman had accompanied her on adventures since Jarl Balgruuf gave her the title of Thane, and once Alduin was defeated, Lydia chose to look after Breezehome. Adi had business to attend to with the Dark Brotherhood at the time. When Adi finally left to join the Guild, Lydia was uncertain about going with her. With the promise to visit as often as she could, Adi respected her friend's decision to stay.
“Welcome home, my Thane.”
“Really, Lydia?” Adi laughed. “Stop with the formalities, and come here.”
Her Housecarl rushed to hug her, greeting her as if Adi had miraculously died and came back from Sovngarde. Adi returned the embrace happily, squeezing Lydia as tightly.
“So why the unexpected visit?” Lydia handed Adi a plate of food, having just been made, as soon as her Thane sat at the dining table.
“A job for the Guild,” Adi took it gratefully, and immediately dug in. Until now, she didn’t realize how hungry she was. “From Maven Black-Briar.”
“Shit, what do you have to do?” Lydia knew of Maven through rumours that spread across Riften, and everything Adi had known from growing up in that city.
Adi told her about the Black-Briar’s request, and how she’d stop in the Bannered Mare tomorrow morning to meet with Mallus. “If I’m not back by the evening, send a note to Brynjolf. I’m either dead or need back up.”
“Brynjolf, huh?” Lydia smirked. “How’s that going?”
“How’s what going?” Adi raised an eyebrow, genuinely confused.
“You mean, the two of you aren’t a couple yet?”
“No, we’re just friends. Everyone thinks we’re courting, though.”
“From how you’ve talked about him,” Lydia said, smirking. “You want to be. Don’t you?”
“No, I don’t!” The Thane was oddly defensive when she spoke. Her friend gave her a sly look.
“Uh-huh…” Her friend gave her a sly look.
“Okay, say I do,” the Dragonborn relented.
“You do.” Lydia raised an eyebrow.
“By the Nine, let me finish.” Adi rolled her eyes. She pushed the remaining food around on the plate. “Say I like him. He doesn’t feel the same.”
“And you know this for sure?” the Housecarl sounded more curious, albeit a little annoyed. She knew Adi had a tendency to get in her own head. From what she knew, it seemed like Brynjolf had feelings for his friend, but may not know it yet.
“Well, no…”
“Okay, you clearly need help.”
“I do not!”
“When you finish your job, I’m heading back with you,” Lydia gave her a ‘no-nonsense' look. “If that’s what it takes to get you and Brynjolf together, I’ll join the Guild.”

Should We Abolish Billionaires?
America now has more billionaires than at any time in history, while most Americans are struggling to make ends meet. With such staggering inequality, it’s fair to ask: should we abolish billionaires?
There are basically only four ways to accumulate a billion dollars -- and none of them is a product of so-called free market capitalism.
Billionaires themselves aren’t the problem. The real failure is in how our economy is organized.
One way to make a billion is to exploit a monopoly.
Jeff Bezos is worth $150 billion. You might say he deserves this because he founded and built Amazon. But Amazon is a monopoly with nearly 50 percent of all e-commerce retail sales in America (and e-commerce is one of the largest sectors of all retail sales). Consumers have few alternatives.
Nor do many suppliers who sell through Amazon; for the first 25 years of its existence, Amazon wouldn’t let them sell at a lower price anywhere else. And Amazon’s business is protected by patents granted Amazon by the U.S. government and enforced by government.
If we had tough anti-monopoly laws, and if the government didn’t grant Amazon so many patents and trademarks, Bezos would be worth far less.
The same applies to people like George Lucas, Oprah Winfrey, or any other figure whose brands, ideas or creations depend on copyrights and trademarks, which are laws that have been dramatically extended in recent decades.
If these were shortened, these people would be worth far less, too.
A second way to make a billion is to get insider information unavailable to other investors.
The hedge-fund maven Steven A. Cohen is worth an estimated $12.8 billion. Now, how did he do it? According to a criminal complaint filed by the Justice Department, insider trading at Cohen’s SAC Capital was “substantial, pervasive, and on a scale without known precedent in the hedge fund industry.”
Eight of Cohen’s present or former employees pleaded guilty or convicted for using insider information. Cohen got off with a fine, changed the name of the firm, and apparently is still at it.
A third way to make a billion is to pay off politicians.
The Trump tax cut was estimated to save Charlesand David Koch– each of whose net worth is estimated to be about $50 billion -- and their Koch Industries -- 1 to 1.4 billion dollarsa year, not even counting tax savings on offshore profits and a shrunken estate tax.
The Kochs and their affiliated groups spent an estimated $20 million lobbying for the Trump tax cut, including major donations to politicians.
Not a bad return on investment: More than a billion dollars a year back for $20 million put in.
Koch Industries has also been a major beneficiary of government programs to fill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, provide roads and access to virgin growth forests, use eminent domain to seize private land for oil and gas pipelines, get oil subsidies, andprofit off federal lands.
A fourth way to be a billionaire is to get the money from rich parents or relatives.
About 60 percent of all the wealth in America today is inherited.
That’s because, under U.S. tax law – which is itself largely a product of lobbying by the wealthy – the capital gains of one generation are wiped out when those assets are transferred to the next, and the estate tax is so tiny that only 0.2 percent of estates were even subject to it in 2017.
America is creating a new aristocracy of people who never worked a day in their lives.
Let's abolish billionaires by changing the way the economy is organized.
This doesn’t mean confiscating the wealth and assets of the super rich. It does mean getting rid of monopolies, stopping the use of insider information, preventing the rich from buying off politicians, and making it harder for the super-rich to avoid paying taxes.
In other words, creating a system in which economic gains are shared more widely.
Entrepreneurs like Jeff Bezos would be just as motivated by say, a $100 million or even $50 million.
But the cost to our democracy of billionaires with enough wealth and power to dictate the rules of capitalism for their own benefit is incalculable.

When night falls - part II
(Brynjolf/ f!dragonborn) A/N: may or may not continue this, entirely dependant of whether someone wants to read more or not basically.
Brynjolf smiled as he toyed with the amulet in his hand. “Should have known.”
Mara leaned back on one of her chairs and put her feet on the table. “What was that?” “ Oh nothing important, lass. “ “ No really, why should you have known my name?” He sat down on the chair across from her. “A woman as lovely as you just had to be named after the goddess of love.” Mara rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. “You… wanna try that again? Or is that your best line?” She looked Brynjolf right in the eyes and found he just held her gaze. He looked inquisitive, perhaps even intrigued. She flung legs over the arm rests so she could look at him more easily.
“ You should not invite strangers into your home like this. Not everyone has good intentions in this city.” “ May I remind you that you broke in?” “ Inviting people who break into your home for a drink may be an even worse idea.” “ In my experience people who don’t announce their presence immediately after they have entered are more dangerous.” He leaned forward, elbows on his knees and hands clasped together. “ Your name has been going around. Helping people, pissing off Maven. She isn’t pleased about the way you spoke to her. “ Mara scoffed. “I don’t get why nobody else speaks to her the way I do. She’s a short throw from a hagraven.” “ Aye, that she may be. But she’s powerful and well-connected. She is the one who truly runs this city. We do jobs for her but so does the dark brotherhood. You really need to look out for when you piss that woman off.”
Mara got up off her chair and rummaged around in her backpack. “Oh really?”
She tossed a letter in his general direction. There was some dried blood next to its broken seal. As he opened it and read what was on it, his eyes widened and he looked up at her again. He looked concerned when he tossed the paper back onto table. “ You’re lucky you lived to tell the tale. Few do.” She kept standing and conjured a flame atronach beside the fireplace. Then she cast a magical dagger in one hand and a fireball in the other while she looked him straight in the eye. “ Power comes in different ways. And the way I see it… I’m working on the connections now aren’t I? “
The corners of Brynjolf’s lips curled up a bit and there was a certain glint in his eye that she could not quite pinpoint of what it meant. “Auch, is that all I am to you, Mara? A potential connection?” She balled her left hand into a fist and when she opened it again the fire had disappeared. With a flick of her right hand so had the ethereal sword. The atronach started its twirling routine as she sat back down, head up and legs crossed. “ Is that not all I am to you? Another connection that could have some use to your guild?” She leaned forward. “Why did you come here Brynjolf? Surely you were in no rush to part with your money and you definitely remembered I said I didn’t want your coin. What’s in it for you to come visit me? Check for which valuables to steal? “
The look he gave her shifted from interest into something else. He looked as if he remembered something important and leaned away from her. “You did your job well and my organization's been having a run of bad luck, but I suppose that's just how it goes.” Mara poured some wine into a glass. “ Maybe you’re just in business with the wrong people. If Maven is anything to go by. That wretched woman cares only for herself and perhaps for her children. Are you the leader of the guild?” “ I am not. The group I represent…” “ The thieves guild.” He grinned but did not confirm it. “… has its home in the Ratway beneath Riften... a tavern called the Ragged Flagon. I usually say get there in one piece and we'll see if you've really got what it takes. But that should be no problem for you.” He glanced over at the atronach. Mara nodded. “I could consider it. But what’s in it for me?” “ Armor, guild protection, fences, discounts on creatively acquired goods, ...” The atronach disappeared. “ And what else? Surely you can be more persuasive than that. ” “ What do you want?” His voice sounded deeper, purposefully so. This definitely wasn’t his first try at this. Ah, two could play that game. She shrugged. “ I want looking into someone’s eyes as they look up from under a hood knowing we are the only two people knowing we are there, I want the thrill of the chase, I want panting against a wall after a quick escape with cold air stinging in my lungs …” He didn’t reply but stared into her eyes instead. He only glanced down at her lips for a fraction of a second but she had noticed it and leaned forward. “You think you can offer me that, ‘lad’?”
He looked down, breathed out slowly and grabbed her glass from her hand. He downed it in one go. “You might just turn our luck around and I know better than to get too closely acquainted to a new recruit. Let’s first check whether you are truly guild material. “ She smiled. “ Don’t flatter yourself. I know your type.” He got up from his seat, leaned forward with a hand on both arm rests of her chair and for just a second she thought he’d try to close the gap. “ Do you, now? “ She leaned back in her chair and looked up at him. “ You’re a smooth-talking conman with a dodgy way of making a living. Your guild is your family, that’s why you were taken aback when I mentioned Sapphire and why you keep saying ‘the operation I present’. You want to protect them. You’re not interested in love, only in an occasional distraction. And I intrigue you because I am no blushing mess, yet haven’t slapped you across the face yet either. How far off am I?” He pushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. “ No blushing mess, aye? Come see us at the Ragged Flagon.”
He opened the door and left. He felt eyes on him and knew it was her. He hadn’t heard the door close yet and tried to ban the image of her leaning against the doorpost, with her brown hair cascading down past her shoulders and her keen eyes tracking him. He turned the corner and heard the door close. As soon as he did, he stopped, breathed in and out deeply and took another look at necklace she had not asked back. The gem in the middle had the same colour as her eyes. He continued on to the ragged flagon and as soon as he entered, Vex was on his tail.
“ You’re back late.” “ We’re thieves, Vex. Do our best work at night. “ Vex, Dune and Delvin looked at each other a little too amused for his comfort. Especially because she usually scowled at him. “ What?” “ Sapphire noticed Iona at the Bee and Barb and wanted to check if anyone was home in Breezehome. See if there were any interesting goods there. Turns out there were… you. She noticed you cosying it up with the thane. Anything you want to tell us, Brynjolf?” “ We can use allies. And thieves as quick as her and with a reputation that can make guards look the other way.” Delvin added “ And with nice legs from what I’ve heard. So you do want to recruit the girl then? Brynjolf nodded. "Aye."
Dirge walked in, seemingly just awake. “We've all heard that one before, Bryn! Quit kidding yourself." Vekel looked over at him from polishing a glass. "It's time to face the truth, old friend. You, Vex, Mercer... you're all part of a dying breed. Things are changing!" Brynjolf shook his head and held onto the necklace in his pocket. “I'm telling you, this one is different...”

What Is Spring Boot? A Detailed Guide

An open source Java web framework called Spring Boot is based on microservices. The Spring Boot framework offers a completely customizable, production-ready environment thanks to its prebuilt code. You can also hire Java developers who are capable of building fully contained applications using the embedded application servers found in microservice architecture.
Benefits & Features of Spring Boots
With its auto-configuration, health checks, and opinionated dependencies, Spring Boot is a great choice for quickly creating Java apps.
Standalone Application:
without the need to modify the deployment, one may just build the application jar and launch it.
Embedded Servers:
includes prebuilt Tomcat, Jetty, and Undertow application servers that may be used right away with no additional setup. Additionally, this allows for quicker, more effective deployments, which reduces restart times.
Auto-Configurable:
The configuration of Spring and other other frameworks will happen automatically.
Production-Like Features:
metrics, externalised setups, and health checks.
Starter Dependencies:

I found it hypocritical for Mare to tell Farley that killing Tolly would not avenge Shade, but shortly afterwards she would hunt for Maven and kill him for her own revenge.
I don’t think that is the right word, tbh, although you have an interesting point.
Mare tells Farley not to kill Tolly because Farley would endanger herself and she’s right about that - it would depend on a lot of luck for Farley to suceed and there would still be Eve, or the rest of the Samos family, intending to avenge Tolly’s death in turn, maybe even threatening Clara. Would Mare face any of this for killing Maven? No. She doesn’t have to fear vengeance from anyone, nor would she have a disadvantage in a fight with Maven, thus the arguments she uses for not killing Tolly don’t apply to her.
Also, I think it’s important to point out that Farley should look after her own safety for her daughter’s sake. How would Clara feel if both her parents died in the war, like they chose the war over her? And this is already a problem, since Farley has continuously to decide between spending time with Clara and fighting in the war, not from 9 to 5, but spending whole months away from her. We don’t know how Farley deals with that conflict (and I wish so hard we would, like by reading her POV), but Mare speaking about it gives us a little insight and Farley’s uncomfortable reaction shows she’s well aware of that. Also, I’d love to see how Farley does deal with her wish for vengeance since we were baited with that and I was excited about it playing a bigger role in the book and it was so disappointing to see this plotline ended in the first chapter.
I think Mare is mostly concerned about Farley’s safety, as Farley is concerned about Mare’s in other moments. They don’t tell each other what to do, they only talk about it as friends and we all know that both of them can word things a little harshly. On the other hand, we might consider that Mare doesn’t see herself as essential to someone else. Mare tries to stay alive, but simply because she doesn’t want to die, not because she doesn’t want to hurt her family with her death. She might behave more risky than Farley because she still has self-esteem issues.
But the interesting question is not whether or not Mare tries to tell Farley what to do, but that Tolly is allowed to get away with his brutal and racist crimes unscathed while Maven is apparently unforgivable. I’m willing to squint when it comes to Shade because of the cirucmstances of his death, but there was literally no need for Tolly to kill the injured and imprisoned Tristan out of a whim. Mare doesn’t say that Farley has to forgive Tolly, but it still comes down to Tolly receiving no punishment at all while showing no visible remorse, why is that? Why are Volo and Maven the only Silvers who are punished (with death) while everyone else gets a chance to learn?

Preliminary Testers

Thank you also for your time and feedback.
Known Issues
One new issue was identified during the release testing. This issue affects Windows users. When running Maven with parallel threads, i.e. the -T command line option, Maven may output spurious ANSI escapes such as (0m (0mMNG-6372
Overview about the changes
Issues have been fixed related to colorizations like to clean up the situation while interrupting the build process MNG-6188 and some issues related to Git Bash / Cygwin have been fixed MNG-6282 and the new options -Dstyle.colorMNG-6296 has been fixed.
The handling CRLF in jvm.config file has been fixed MNG-6255.
The wrong usage of the CI friendly version was not correctly identified which has been improved MNG-6305.
Wrong encoding of non-ascii filenames has been fixed MNG-6320.
Deadlock in dependency resolution has been fixed MNG-6323.
A regression related to parents relativePath verification has been fixed MNG-6330.
So now some more interesting things about new (small) features:
The log output contains now some progress informations related to the number of modules which looks like this MNG-6302:
The number 1 is the current number which is being built where the 9 in this case is the number of modules which have to be built overall. So we are in module 1 of 9.
Furthermore the information about the packaging type and the groupId/artifactId are now being shown during the build like the following MNG-6308:
And finally we have added the version of the modules or the reactor at the end of the build MNG-6352:
This can be helpful if you have a large number of modules to get the information about the version being built. This meant in the past to scroll up to the last module and look there for the version. Now this can simply being seen at the end of build. If you have a multi module build where the number is the same for all modules it will be given only on the first line and the last line. If you have an aggregator build the version will be printed out for each project.
One more thing has been optimized. We have removed the System.gc() call at the end of the build because this can cause costs for example on AWS systems related to the time taken to run Garbage Collection which is not really necessary MNG-6340. This means also the resulting output will change a little bit like this:
So there is no line anymore telling you about memory stuff.
If you have used the deprecated version markers like RELEASE or LATEST this will now produce a WARNING during the build MNG-6342.
Bugs:
MNG-6188 - Console color not properly reset when interrupting build process
MNG-6255 - Maven script cannot parse jvm.config with CRLF
MNG-6282 - Console output has no colors in shell (both Git Bash and Cygwin) (regression in Jansi 1.16 / Maven 3.5.1)
MNG-6296 - New option -Dstyle.color is not working
MNG-6298 - 3.5.2: ClassNotFoundException: javax.annotation.security.RolesAllowed
MNG-6300 - Multi module release creates empty directories in war file instead of jars
MNG-6305 - Validation of CI friendly version incorrect
MNG-6320 - Apparently wrong encoding of non-ascii java class filename in error messages in the maven log
MNG-6323 - Deadlock in multithreaded dependency resolution
MNG-6330 - (regression) Parents relativePath not verified anymore
New Feature
MNG-6302 - Provide some “progress” hints
Improvements
MNG-5992 - Git passwords are exposed as the Super POM still uses Maven Release Plugin 2.3.2
MNG-6306 - Replace use of Guava in maven-resolver-provider with a lighter weight alternative
MNG-6308 - display packaging & groupId:artifactId when building a module
MNG-6332 - Cleaned up mvn.cmd Script
MNG-6340 - (Performance) To make System.gc() call configurable in target summary code
MNG-6342 - Emit a WARNING about LATEST/RELEASE in parent
MNG-6352 - Printout version information at the end of the build
Xprog 5.3 Software Download
Task
MNG-6331 - Remove maven-bundle-pugin from build pluginManagement

Wrong. You need to drop JAR in /WEB-INF/lib folder. You don't need to create any additional folders.

Unnecessary. Undo it all to avoid possible conflicts.
4: I still get java.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver found for jdbc:mysql//localhost:3306/mysql
This exception can have 2 causes:
JDBC driver is not in runtime classpath. This is to be solved by doing 2) the right way.
JDBC URL is not recognized by any of the loaded JDBC drivers. Indeed, the JDBC URL is wrong, there should as per the MySQL JDBC driver documentation be another colon between the scheme and the host.

You can paste the .jar file of the driver in the Java setup instead of adding it to each project that you create. Paste it in C:Program FilesJavajre7libext or wherever you have installed java.
After this you will find that the .jar driver is enlisted in the library folder of your created project(JRE system library) in the IDE. No need to add it repetitively.

if you are getting this exception again and again then download my-sql connector and paste in tomcat/WEB-INF/lib folder..note that some times WEB-INF folder does not contains lib folder, at that time manually create lib folder and paste mysql connector in that folder.definitely this will work.if still you got problem then check that your jdk must match your system. i.e if your system is 64 bit then jdk must be 64 bit

import com.mysql.jdbc.jdbc2.optional.MysqlConnectionPoolDataSource;
import com.mysql.jdbc.jdbc2.optional.MysqlDataSource;
Mysql Driver Download
I get error under 'com.mysql'.
What is my mistake?

If the JAR file for the JDBC driver appears in the 'Referenced Libraries' branch of the project, like this:
then you don't need an import statement for it. Just use DriverManager.getConnection() and Java should be able to find the JDBC driver itself.

Family Fights - Chapter Sixteen
Summary: Even the strongest bond, the most loving family, can be broken by nightmares, and the librarian is soon to learn this. As she learns sinister things about a person who she had thought was lost forever, she realizes she will need the help of another witch to get her family back.

Five months later
The air of the woods hummed with their magic.
The birds had all flown away as soon as they began their practice, except for a handful of owls and ravens, who looked at them as though they knew perfectly what they were doing. Other than their hushed incantations and the crackle of their spells, silence filled the forest. Even the bugs sat still to watch the witches.
Dueling was a great way to improve her control and strengthen her, Hilda had found. So every other Saturday, instead of an usual lesson, the librarian would take her all the way to the forest for them to practice. After all, it was way more recluse than any park in Trolberg, and they couldn’t very well duel inside the library or Maven’s house. Besides, Woodman liked to come and watch them sometimes.
“Be more conscious of how the blow is going to hit me!” Maven advised after the spell that her apprentice had shot at her was quickly absorbed by her wards. “But you’re doing very good in the pronunciation! Your spells are coming out great.”
Hilda smiled and nodded. Getting ready for the spell that the librarian would cast, she squinted at the book which she held on her left hand. Though her mentor was experienced enough that she didn’t need to say the words out loud for spells like these, let alone consult a spell book, Hilda was still working with verbal incantations. With her other hand, she held her wand, which she used to strengthen her shield shield in case she couldn’t cast the counter spell in time.
Purple sparks flew off of the librarian’s wand like fireworks, and in response Hilda repeated one of her favorite incantations, gronn barriere beskytter meg, which made a gigantic flower appear in front of her like a floating barrier. The sparks completely destroyed it, but they didn’t reach Hilda’s shield.
“That worked.” Maven said as she walked closer. “But the spell I shot you was easily redirectable. Your magic would have been better used if you had channeled the spell and shot it back at me. This way, you just spent your energy in a barrier that can’t serve you anymore.”
When she was close enough, she looked for a specific page in Hilda’s book, reaching the beginning of another section of spells.
“Any of these would have been good. Do you want us to study them next?”
“Yes, that sounds good!”
“Great.” Returning to her position a few meters in front of her student, the librarian came back to defence stance. “Oh, and since it was a fire spell, it would have gone even better if you returned it with a water one. You are doing amazing with earth spells, and it’s perfect that you’re developing your strengths, but I don’t want you to get too dependent on one element, okay?”
Hilda could not help but look down at her bare feet. For their duels, she always chose to be leave her boots at the side. It helped her feel grounded at all times, as well as draw energy from the earth, but she knew that she had to learn how to be ready to cast on any circumstances. Maven allowed her to be barefoot, but she made sure Hilda understood that she should not continue like that when she got more skilled.
They had been dueling for some time, sending spells back and forth between each other since the sun had been high in the sky, so Hilda knew this would probably be one of the last times she’d cast before they called Johanna’s to give them a ride back home. As such, she wanted to finish off with something more elaborate. There was this one spell that she’d been itching to try, especially since she suspected that Maven would love it, so she decided to cast it.
“Falske udode angrep.” She pronounced the words carefully, paying attention to how they felt in her mouth; the feeling you got from things was very important in witchcraft. As she did so, she motioned her wand to make a coffin shape in the air, and in each of the six points where two lines met a glow of spectral light gathered.
“Falske udode angrep.” Hilda repeated, and felt herself surrendering to the spell. She was swaying almost imperceptibly from side to side as her magic worked to turn the balls of light into skulls, and her eyes were closed in both peace and concentration.
As she kept chanting the incantation, the skulls advanced towards the librarian, who gasped and twirled her wand. A golden fox rose from it, gleaming from the magic it was made of. Ferociously, it attacked the skulls as they came, but it wasn’t quick enough to stop all of them. Maven then resorted to throwing strong blasts of fire at the attackers, however she found that they were way too strong to be taken down that way, being continuously fed by Hilda’s magic.
Two of them were already working on destroying her personal shield when she realized, feeling both stunned and proud, that she’d have to use an advanced spell to beat off the energy creatures that Hilda had cast. Lifting her wand high above her head, its tip pointing at the sky, she stomped her foot and proclaimed the incantation loudly.
“Livets bolger beskytter denne manebundne sjelen!”
As soon as she said the last word, purple waves began flowing from her wand, reminiscent of the movement in a pond after a rock was thrown in it. The skulls that had remained emitted a piercing screech as they died out, turning into thick, black goo that was absorbed by the ground, and the waves made even the branches of the trees around them shake.
Maven took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment to collect herself. She’d never even used that spell outside of training battles with her mother, and it used up a lot of her energy. Not only that, but her wards were also damaged from Hilda’s attack. She’d have to put them up again later.
She was still panting, completely stupefied by the strength of the spell Hilda had managed to cast, when she realized that the girl must be feeling its effects too, especially since Maven had thrown another powerful charm at her. Running to her student, the librarian tuned in into her energy and realized that her wards were marred as well.
“Hilda, how are you feeling?” She asked urgently, kneeling down in front of the girl and putting her hands on her shoulders.
“Whoa! I feel… kind of surprised, to be honest. I didn’t know that would work so well!”
“You are okay, then?”
“Yes, of course. Kind of tired, actually, like I’ve just run a lot, but I’m fine.” When she came to think of it, her heart was beating madly, and she felt like she could fall asleep any time, but it was nothing that justified the look of shocked wonder that the librarian had on her eyes. After a moment, during which Maven seemed to be deep in thought, she stood up without taking her hands from Hilda’s shoulders.
“That was a very advanced spell.” She said, her breathing already beginning to return to its normal rhythm. “How did you learn it?”
Hilda shrugged, and though that wasn’t what she was trying to do, it dislodged Maven’s hands from her. The witch crossed her arms and hugged herself, avoiding eye contact, a small gesture that in the months they’d spent together Hilda had come to recognize as nervousness.
“I saw it in the book yesterday and thought I’d try it. Why? Did it come out wrong?”
“No, you’ve cast it almost perfectly.”
“But you don’t look happy at all.”
After being called out on that, Maven met her student’s eyes and made herself smile.
“Sorry for being rude, Hildie. You did amazing and I’m very proud of you for that. I have something on my mind, that’s all.”
She sighed and squatted down on the ground, not at all surprised when Hilda did the same by her side, looking concerned for her. The girl’s power had been building as they trained, and Maven was aware of each step she accomplished in her path. Still, it had been easy to pretend that there was no end objective to this, that there wasn’t a goal they were trying to reach, and just as easy to tell herself that if the moment finally came, than it would be only in a very long time, in a way that kept Maven’s hopes alive without her having to face the looming possibility of failure or any harm coming to Hilda. But after this, it would be stupid to deny it that her apprentice was already capable of helping her.
“What sort of ‘something’?” She asked, and Maven felt a pang of guilt at the worry in her voice. Hilda was the child and the student in their relationship, she shouldn’t have to worry about her.
This was the moment she’d been waiting for. The reason she’d began training the girl in the first place. The chance to finally save her sister. And yet, she hesitated for some reason. Maybe it was the fear of failure, or the resentment over knowing that even though she loved her sister, Myra didn’t deserve a second chance when going away was her choice and so was refusing her help for the first times. That was, however, not her decision to make.
“You are ready.” She revealed after deliberation. “You are apt to help me perform the Soul Spell.”
Hilda’s eyes widened, and she jumped up to her feet. There was no fear on her face, only amazement as she considered what that meant.
She’d done it. After all those months, she was ready.
“That’s amazing!” She chirped, but frowned when the librarian still didn’t get up. “It is good, isn’t it? Is there any problem?”
“No, not really. I suppose I’m just a bit overwhelmed. But with that being said… Hilda, will you help me perform the ritual?”
Squaring her shoulders, Hilda felt herself standing taller. Maven was by far the most powerful person she knew, and one of her best friends. She’d done so much for her, and now Hilda had the chance to be the one to come to her aid and show the librarian that her hard work training her had paid off.
“Without the shadow of a doubt!”
_#_#_#_
It took Maven little time to realize that she was the most nervous between them all.
After they called Johanna to pick them up, the two witches spent some time grounding, to return the chaotic energy that they had gathered during the duel back to the earth and warding, since both of their shields had been damaged. When the woman arrived, Hilda was excited to tell her about how she was ready for the Soul Spell, and though there was a flash of concern in her eyes so quick that Maven nearly missed it, she looked way more proud of her child than worried. And if Johanna wasn’t worried, Maven told herself, she shouldn’t be either. The worst case scenario was getting worked up for nothing if her sister did not cooperate.
They would need a whole day to properly prepare themselves to cast the spell, and the next day was as good as any. Hilda said she didn’t have any pressing schoolwork to be done that weekend, so it was settled that she would spend the night over at Maven’s so that they could begin as early as needed. Their first stop after Johanna picked them up in the forest was at Hilda’s house, so she could pack the things she’d need for the night and tell Alfur where she’d be. Next, all three of them went to Maven’s place, where the witches sprawled themselves on the couches, still resting from the energy they’d spent on the duel. It didn’t escape Maven’s notice that Johanna had seemed amused by that.
For quite some time, they didn’t do much, just chatted and rested as the sun lowered down into the horizon. Maven ordered food and they all ate together, arranging the last details with Johanna. After the spell was cast, she’d still need to call Myra forth so she could take the help, and Maven insisted that Hilda wasn’t present for that second part. However much the girl protested, eventually her mother and mentor made her understand that it could be dangerous, and so it was arranged for Johanna to be on Maven’s street just after sunset, so she could be with Hilda when she went home after the spell.
“Good luck, and be safe.” Johanna said as she brought her daughter into a tight embrace when the time came for her to leave. “Call me if you need anything, okay?”
“I will, mum. Good night.”
After releasing Hilda, Johanna hugged Maven as well, making her blush at the show of affection and tentatively return it.
“You too, Mave. I believe in you.”
And then she was gone, leaving mentor and apprentice alone with their duty.
_#_#_#_
“So… what’s the schedule for tomorrow?” Hilda asked when she entered the room. Maven was going through the uncomfortable process of getting her sister’s bed ready for the first time in years, and she’d asked her apprentice to put their wands in the backyard, near the rosemaries. It was beneficial for wands to soak in moonlight every once in a while, and it was especially important considering their plan for the next day. Besides, she’d wanted to be alone when she put away the picture of her family that was in a frame at Myra’s bedside table.
Even though now it was clear that her sister had ripped it herself, at the time she and her mother had though that one of the Marra had torn it to pieces, and they had glued it back together. It didn’t hurt so much to look at it anymore, but it would feel too vulnerable to let Hilda see it.
“Well, first off will be grounding. I’m afraid we’ll do a lot of meditating tomorrow. It is crucial for us to be in our most connected state of mind possible, it will help us be clear minded at the time of the ritual.”
“Makes sense.” After noticing Freya rubbing her tail on her legs, Hilda picked the catowl up and scratched her ears. She had quite warmed up to Hilda over the time, and the girl was happy to have her nearby. There was nothing like a fluffy animal to ease her nerves, which did exist due to the importance of their situation.
“After breakfast we’ll see to the spell components. We need to cleanse and charge every crystal and carve sigils onto candles. Obviously we’ll also study the ritual during the afternoon. It should be cast at moonrise.
Nodding, Hilda sat down on her bed, and the librarian sat down on hers, picking up her comforter and bringing it to cover her legs.
“Just a warning-” She said as she lied down. “Freya is looking awfully comfy in your arms, she’ll probably want to sleep in your bed.”
Lying down herself, Hilda noticed that Freya did indeed make herself comfortable by her pillow and she chuckled.
“It’s okay.”
“In that case, we should go to sleep. We begin at dawn.”
Maven pressed the light switch and cast the room in darkness. Though the curtains were open, Maven didn’t live near many other houses, so the only light that came through was that of the moon and the stars. Hilda shifted on her bed as little as she could, so as not to disturb Freya, but it didn’t stop Maven from being aware that minutes later she still hadn’t fallen asleep. She tuned into her energy, and felt her unease.
“Is something bothering you?” Maven asked quietly so as not to startle her, and the little light that came through the window was enough for her to see Hilda turning to face her. So many nights she’d talked to Myra like this, both of them exhausted on their beds but still with their heads too filled by thoughts to go to sleep without sharing them. Seemed ironic to have this experience with the one who would help save her.
“It’s just normal anxiety, I suppose.” When she began this journey, she’d been nothing but excited for this day to come. But she was much wiser and more experienced now, and she knew the importance of the ritual they’d do. She knew that if they weren’t careful, it might go wrong no matter how well intentioned she was. “You are a bit too, aren’t you? I noticed you’ve been tense. Is it because you’re also worried I won’t be able to make it?”
Maven stiffened when she said that. She’d rarely known Hilda to be anything but confident. If she was offended by the possibility of her mentor worrying about her, however, it didn’t show on her voice. It sounded like she was only pointing out a fact, and that even though she hoped it would work and knew her teacher believed in her, she’d accepted that failure was a possible outcome for every situation in life. Maven supposed it did show how much she’d grown, but it had caught her by surprise.
“I wouldn't have said you were ready if I didn’t think you were, Hildie.”
“I know.” She could practically hear the girl smile. “But that’s not what I asked. You can be ready for something and still not be able to make it in the end.”
Maven shook her head, although she didn’t know if Hilda could see her in the gloom.
“You are right. But… that’s not the reason why I’ve been on edge today.”
“Then what is it?”
“Let’s just say” She sighed. “That you’ve never been the one I was worried about.”
Turning onto her right arm to face the wall, Maven hugged her pillow and let herself ignore the rest of the world. A calm feeling washed over her like waves, and soon both witches were sinking into a deep slumber.

How To Test Skin Ph
New Post has been published on https://skin-care-routine.com/skin-care-routine/how-to-test-skin-ph/
How To Test Skin Ph
A. What Is Skin pH? How to Tell if Yours Is Healthy, and Why It Matters
Products that claim to balance the skin’s pH are in vogue today. Here is an introduction to what they do and whether they are worth it.
It’s official: pH is the new black. From the dermatologist’s offices to the Sephora corridors, “pH balance” is the expression on the well-moistened lips of all Beauty Maven. The market started to flood with detergents, toners, moisturizers, pH strips and even high-tech portable pH sensors. When it comes to beauty treatments and products that aim to restore the skin’s pH balance, today’s market is a bit like the Wild West: there is a rush to make some important statements and certainly some snake oil is being sold.
Although beauticians, dermatologists and wellness gurus have different philosophies, everyone agrees that pH is important for the overall health of the skin. So we thought it would be a good time to take a step back and ask some basic questions, such as: What is pH balance anyway? And why should you worry about that in your quest for amazing skin?
1. What is the pH, anyway? A short science class for beginners
Let’s go back to science class for a moment. PH is a numerical scale that shows how acidic or alkaline something is. On the pH scale from 1 to 14, 7 is neutral, below 7 is acidic and above 7 is alkaline. What does this have to do with your skin?
PH is not the only trend word – beauty experts are also increasingly talking about how the pH value can affect the so-called “acid mantle”, a thin barrier on the skin’s surface that helps maintain the acidity of light. Dr. Youn explains that if you disturb your acid mantle with very aggressive products, you will suffer the consequences and they will not look good. Although recently reintroduced into the dictionary, the term “acid mantle” actually dates back to 1928, when it was coined during one of the first studies on the pH of the skin’s surface. This is evident in an article published in Current Problems in Dermatology in August 2018.
2. How pH has become one of the most recent trends in skin care
“Its acid mantle is made up of amino acids and lactic acids, in addition to tallow, also known as fat-free acids,” says Tiffany Masterson, founder of the Drunk Elephant skin care line in Houston, Texas, which ensures that its products have balanced pH. Masterson is a pH-trained freelance and has become a leading voice in the field, thanks in large part to her brand success. “The acid mantle accidentally protects the skin from environmental influences that lead to aging and general irritation,” she says. The brand’s Slaai Melting Butter Cleanser debuted in April and immediately impressed beauty experts with its pH-balancing powers.
Other products, such as Tula Pro-Glycolic 10% pH Resurfacing Gel, are so popular that they are often completely sold out, both online and in department stores. The excitement is so great that retailers, including Sephora and Dermstore, have dedicated areas on their websites for pH balanced products. La Roche-Posay launched My Skin Track in 2019, a wearable sensor prototype that detects traces of sweat from your pores and promises an accurate measurement of skin pH in just 15 minutes.
3. Why pH balance products are less important for healthy skin
As far as the pH and the acidic matter of the mantle are concerned, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Much depends on the natural condition of your skin. Karcher explains that healthy skin is more than just pH. “PH is the flavor of the month, but it has to be part of the big picture,” she says. “Yes, you need to have acid pH to have healthy skin. However, if your skin is healthy and you use an alkaline cleanser, your skin will be back in a few minutes.”
Karcher believes that pH is one of several components that keep skin healthy, but it is not the only one, nor is it necessarily the main one. “There are so many factors that contribute to the overall health of the skin that if you focus only on pH, you will lose many others that are as or more important than pH,” they say.
4. How a growing understanding of intestinal bacteria sparked interest in pH imbalance
As a plastic surgeon who specializes in holistic beauty, Youn believes that one of the reasons why pH is so popular in skin care may be the growing research on the microbiome that protects us from germs, food breaks down to release energy and affect the skin. “Now there is something called the gut-skin axis, where we found that gut health also affects the trillions of bacteria that live on our skin, and if its pH is unbalanced, it can affect that,” Youn cited a review published in July 2018 in Frontiers in Microbiology.
Youn says that while many in the world of holistic beauty are obsessed with pH, the acid mantle and the microbiome, they are not yet in the medical world. “The real question is how strong and how long the pH of a skin product affects the skin. I don’t think we know. If you ask 10 plastic surgeons who recommend skin care products about skin pH and mantle acid levels, they probably won’t have a clue what you’re talking about. ”
5. The best way to find out if your skin products have low pH
You may not have to worry too much about the pH of your products if you have healthy skin. However, if you already have inflammatory skin conditions like acne or eczema, use cleansers, serums, and moisturizers in the 4.6-5.5 range to prevent skin peeling, says Cates.
Since most skincare products in the U.S. don’t write the pH of the formula on the label like many K-Beauty products, you can find out the pH of a product on the brand’s website or call the company and ask. If you want to be sure, you can also buy pH strips and test a product yourself. “If you live in a place where tap water is hard, your skin’s pH may become more alkaline,” says Cates. (If you see white spots on your glasses or calcification in your showers, you probably have hard tap water, according to Sciencing.com.) One solution is to try to clean with micellar water, which French women have been announcing as a big secret. skin for decades.
And when all else fails, it is sometimes better to remember that less is more. “There is something I call a ‘hospital phenomenon’,” says Masterson. “Each time I gave birth to my babies, I spent several days in the hospital and then in bed at home to recover. I really didn’t pay much attention to my skin at that time and guess what? My skin has never been happier. That’s because I let it work on my own and left the acid mantle alone to do its job, which it did very well. When you’re struggling with skin problems and don’t know what else to do, the answer is often “do less”.
B. Easy Ways to Test Your Skin pH Level
The pH of the skin plays an important role in the overall health of the skin. Our skin works and looks better in the middle of the pH range. 5.5 is ideal. But what exactly is “skin pH” and how do you determine your skin’s pH value? We will answer that today!
1. What is the pH?
pH means “potential hydrogen”. This term describes the acid-base ratio of a substance. The pH scale works in a range from 1 to 14. A pH of 1 would be the most acidic. A pH of 14 would be the most alkaline (basic).
2. pH and your skin
Your skin is protected by a thin layer known as an acid mantle. It is a film of amino acids and lactic acids responsible for the absorption of lipids and moisture, blocking germs, pollution, toxins and bacteria. Science has shown that the acid mantle should be slightly acidic at a pH of 5.5. If it is too alkaline, the skin is dry and sensitive. You can suffer from dry, sensitive skin and even have eczema. When your skin is alkaline, it inhibits your ability to fight matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). These enzymes destroy collagen and cause wrinkles and sagging.
In a study recently published in the British Journal of Dermatology, women were followed for 8 years. Those with alkaline stratum (the outermost layer of the skin) developed thinner lines and crow’s feet and were more prone to sun damage than those with acidic skin. It is very common for the skin to be excessively acidic. The result of acidic skin usually manifests itself in rashes and acne. If the skin becomes too acidic below 4.5, it can become red and inflamed.
3. How do I test your skin’s pH?
It is not easy to test the pH of the skin. For a perfect answer, you would need to consult a doctor or dermatologist who uses a pH meter to determine your skin’s pH. This simple eight-question test will help you determine where your skin fits on the pH scale.
4. How was your skin score?
a. If your main answer was B, then your skin’s pH is too high
You have alkaline skin. The skin’s acid mantle is released from its protective lipids and is a victim of bacteria, ultraviolet rays and aggressive ingredients. Take a look at the products that are used to wash, exfoliate and moisturize your face. Try Nayelle’s gentle CLEANING for a pH-balanced facial cleanser. Our HYDRATE Probiotic Moisturizing Cream and REJUVENATE Anti-Aging Night Cream are also formulated with a neutral pH so that your skin reaches the perfect pH value.
b. If you answered A most of the time, then your skin’s pH is perfect
This is your skin’s happy place. Having such good skin is no coincidence for you. We know that you are washing and exfoliating with the right products.
c. If your main response was C, your skin’s pH is too low (acidic)
You have oily skin, rashes and tenderness. You may be overdoing your exfoliating products (think of acids) to absorb excess fat. Although this type of exfoliation can keep your complexion healthy, your skin suffers very well. You may have relied heavily on facial cleansers and scrubs.
5. Other ways to test your skin’s pH
As mentioned earlier, testing your skin directly is difficult. You would need to consult a doctor or dermatologist who uses a pH meter. Many dermatologists agree that observing your skin’s behavior is the best way to know your skin’s pH level.
6. Test your salivary pH
Your body’s pH is a good indicator of your skin’s pH. An easy way is to test your saliva. You can try the pH ion balance strips. Simply dip a strip in your saliva and get an instant reading of your internal pH in 0.25 increments.
C. Discover How to Balance Your Skin pH – Naturally
Dry or oily skin leaving you down? Find out why skin pH is important – and how Puracy products can help balance skin pH. If you suffer from skin problems, balancing your skin’s pH may be the key to beautiful, healthy skin. If your skin is dry, oily or prone to acne, the expert tips in this article should help you restore your skin’s pH balance naturally.
1. What is the normal pH of the skin?
By measuring the pH (meaning “hydrogen potential”), you can determine how acidic or alkaline a particular substance is. On a scale of 0 to 14, water has pH 7. Therefore, it is considered “neutral”. Anything below 7 has a higher acidity. Anything over 7 is considered alkaline. The general assumption is that the skin’s pH is slightly acidic and ranges from 5 to 6 on the pH scale. Some recent studies have suggested that the ideal pH level for the skin may even be slightly below 5.
2. Why is the balanced pH of the skin so important?
When the skin has an ideal pH value, it has an improved barrier function, better moisture retention and less flaking. A slightly acidic pH value of the skin helps normal (healthy) bacterial flora to adhere to the epidermis. When the pH of the skin is more alkaline, it can potentially be related to, and even cause, the following dermatological conditions: eczema, irritant contact dermatitis, diaper rash, acne and fungal, fungal and bacterial infections.
3. Water quality has a big impact on your skin’s pH
Your daily bathing routine will have a dramatic impact on your skin, and one of the biggest culprits for unbalanced skin is the quality of the water in your home. Puracy makes cleaning and hygiene products that work very well. Our passion for natural cleaning services is our profession and we are here to share it with you.
If your scalp and skin feel dry, regardless of the type of shampoo and liquid soap you use, the water may be hard. Owners should consider investing in a water softener. In the meantime, a shower filter is an excellent and affordable option – especially for renters.
Professional tip: your community should be able to tell how hard the water is.
4. The best water for skin pH
During the bath, the best water for skin pH is soft, non-alkaline and low in minerals. Since hot water dries out the skin, it is best to use warm water whenever possible.
5. Find the best products to help balance skin pH
Cleansing and moisturizing creams understandably affect your skin’s pH. The ideal range for skin care products with a balanced pH value is between 4 and 6. Unfortunately, typical bar soaps can have a pH value of up to 12 and are particularly hard on the skin of the face.
To keep your skin healthy, use a pH balanced soap such as Puracy Natural Body Wash with a pH between 5 and 6. This formulation is a gentle blend of natural coconut cleansers, clinical grade moisturizers and pink Himalayan sea salt. Hypoallergenic soap with a balanced pH value is free of chemicals that can remove the natural oil from the skin.
Professional tip: With simple pH test strips, you can quickly determine if your skin care products have a balanced pH value.
a. Why toner is important for the skin
Immediately after cleaning your skin, apply toner that will help to calibrate your pH. Read the list of ingredients before applying any product to the skin. If alcohol is at the top of your ingredient list, it is likely that you are dehydrating (rather than nourishing) your skin.
b. Also, look for a shampoo with a balanced pH level
Also, check the list of ingredients for your hair products. Many cosmetic companies consider sulfates (such as sodium lauryl sulfate) to be perfectly suitable for use in “natural” shampoos. Since sulfates are alkaline, they can dry out and alter the skin’s natural pH.
Puracy Natural Shampoo uses natural botanicals and coconut-based cleansers to gently cleanse the scalp and hair follicles. Be sure to follow our natural conditioner to block out moisture.
Professional tip: Depending on your hair type and the health of your scalp, it may be best to wash it every few days.
c. Don’t forget to make lotion
Within minutes of getting out of the shower, ensure vital hydration by applying a nourishing moisturizer with a balanced pH.
6. Restore your skin’s pH with Puracy products
Puracy Body Wash, Natural Shampoo and Natural Conditioner range from 5 to 6 on the pH scale, while Puracy lotions range from 6 to 7. Our products are scientifically designed to work with the skin’s natural pH – all without harsh or irritating chemicals .

I'd love to hear your thoughts on Gisa Barrow. Gilorn? How will she further grow and mature? Her relationship with Mare? Se seems to me too under-analyzed.
Gisa Barrow… my analysis….and this gets long.
She’s the youngest child, Mare is 18, she is 15. Bree, the oldest brother is about 23. When Bree was conscripted she was 10. But she was also already an apprentice. When she found her job, it was probably already clear that Mare, Shade, and Tramy would all be conscripted and not apprenticed. Considering only Mare and Shade adhered to their education enough to be literate, I don’t think we can call the Barrow family conventionally motivated.
Gisa…
At 10, she had a job, responsibilities, and we can assume a long commute which she did on her own every day. This probably made her feel important and distinguished in the family. By 15, it’s a hardship and a duty that she does for everyone else - as Mare observes when she follows her sister to Sommerton in Red Queen. Gisa lives that life alone. She can’t confide in her closest sibling - seeing as how Mare only comes to understand the burden during that walk. Her mother is tender towards her, but may not have any helpful suggestions or experiences. And her father is emotionally unavailable and homebound. Gisa probably takes on a lot of the emotional labor for her family. She’s not really allowed to have complaints - she’s not going to be conscripted. She’s gifted. She’s an example. She has no worries or problems…
Except that she does. She is a young girl growing up with her mistress to guide her and a family to support. She has to mind her own business, be courteous, and stay out of everyone’s way if she wants to make it to a level that she can open her own shop / move out of the apprentice role. There is a lot of pressure on Gisa to carry the family. She may end up being the only surviving child. Her parents will depend on her more as they age. All this must weigh on her and it’s probably why she’s not the most vocal of the siblings.
I imagine Gisa… watching Mare sleep in when she’s getting dressed in the morning and wishing she could roll over.
Coming home late because she had to finish a job and missed the barge and had to walk the 10 miles home. And her mother has dinner set aside on a plate, but it’s cold and after 10 miles, not enough to crush her hunger. Handing over her pay to her parents to buy rations, occasionally thinking about saving some up for herself, but then the price of milk goes up.
Falling asleep in minutes because her body is tired and her mind is mud. Her fingers are sore, and she’s calculating the proportions of the next day’s piece. And proportions are easier to think about with her eyes closed. And then they’re open for another day, another walk, another steady stitch in an endless pattern.
She sits and looks out the window, watching Mare and Kilorn elbowing each other, mud-faced and beaming after an evening on the river banks and a night out pick-pocketing. She watches him watch her sister like a love-drunk fool and Mare laughs at his jokes and snidely snipes back. She wishes she were in on their inside jokes, but she’d have to actually live along side them for that to happen.
Mare resents Gisa because their mother often uses her as an example. When Mare’s being a jerk or hard headed, Gisa can’t help but agree–she is the daughter that best meets their parent’s expectations. But she also looks at her older sister and sees things she wishes she had: independence, freedom, a liberal and loquacious mouth, an ease of self and a confidence that isn’t even shaken by their mother’s often-angry diatribes. Frankly, the rift between her and her sister is created by her parents and their situations. It becomes easier to not address her desires to be like her sister and instead to sit stead-fast on the elevation provided to her by society. It doesn’t mean she looks down on her, and frankly, Mare is the only other sibling contributing to the household and those extra rations ease the pressure off Gisa a little bit.
Kilorn is the only non-family male she ever really gets to see or know or interact with. He’s almost like her friend… almost. Except she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have time. And he smiles at her and looks at the practice pieces her mistress sends her home to sew. Kilorn relies on her for repairs to his trousers and they smell of him as she patches the knee. And she doesn’t know how talk to him because there’s no one for her to practice talking with, or even to develop a more obtainable crush.
Kilorn is 18, she is 15, but when he’s 23 and she is twenty, three years won’t seem so much. But with Mare at the war, he won’t come by, not to see her–that would be silly. And that hurts her deep between the shoulder blades. When Mare is gone, she’ll be more than alone, she’ll be completely disconnected.
That’s what Gisa is… an outsider hanging on by a loose connection. Her destiny is as consigned as her siblings conscription. And if she doesn’t just get up and go to work, and match colors and patterns to order, she has time to think about all the things she barely has and how exactly she’ll lose them. When that happens, it’s not enough to be the preferred daughter or the gifted one. When that happens, she has to get tough and pull herself together, because no one will understand the daughter crying at home when the others could be dying.
Until her hand is smashed. And then, she doesn’t even bring anything of worth to her family. She’s another burden, and she may even be a child that will go to die. Mare getting the job at the palace flips their positions. She struggles seeing her parents happy and relieved and proud of Mare when she no longer has anything to get the praise which has been so consistent. It’s a deeply depressing time.
Until her brothers are back… well, most of them… and they bring the promise of money, pensions, an easier life. Alarmingly, Gisa wasn’t included in the “lottery” which means she could still be sent to war, but that’s three years off and maybe she can sort out something until then.
And then, they exit Nortan society. And every pattern of her life has been unstitched and torn from the fabric. They are fleeing. They have nothing. They have no control. But, she also finally has some freedom, some independence. She can find a way to help the people that have transported them from the Stilts into relative safety and liberation. They are more or less kept fed, clothed, rationed, and safe. So she works her needle as best she can, and the other kids her age are around. It’s the first time, she’s been around people who aren’t driven to deadlines or on their way to work.
It’s foreign and she struggles to cope with the anxiety of breaking the ice, learning names, remembering details, asking the polite questions. She doesn’t know when it’s appropriate to sit in silence or when she’s expected to talk. She worries that they think she’s weird. But then, there’s Kilorn. Smiling, if not per-occupied, Kilorn. And she can tag along sometimes and learns how to be a quiet, but present around to him and others. And it breaks the haze of her childhood crush seeing him:–a fisherman displaced, and her–a girl broken, in contrast.
In Piedmont, she gets healed. It renews her feeling of purpose to have her skills once again in her fingertips. And there are children from the notch that spill out in herds. And behind them, there’s Cameron.
Cameron, who’s angry and confused and determined to save her brother. Cameron, who understands hard work and staying busy and doing as you’re told. Cameron, who’s never had so much free time in her life as she does at Tuck, free time that she spends getting to know Gisa. It’s clear at first, she does it to get to know more about Mare, but that’s a swiftly exhausted topic. And then it’s about anything other than what makes them anxious.
Cameron watches Gisa stitch together flags and pillows and garments by hand. And scrambles together enough parts and pulleys to make a sewing machine. It stitches lowly, but it saves her fingers and makes her blush. She’s never had a gift that made her feel rich before.
Gisa sees Cameron attempting her own braids, her arms getting tired, her crooked fingers aching and unable to hold her hair tight. Gisa sits behind her and carefully works, at first slow and starting over three times. But she gets the hang of it. Gisa puts rows one inch back from Cameron’s face and then braids them to the bottoms. It gives them hours of time to talk and reflect, especially that first time. Gisa becomes Cameron’s go-to for hair braiding, always up for a chance to show improvement and make Cameron smile.
Cameron, on the floor rotating between her knees, starts to bitch about Mare. Not when she is Maven’s pet, of course, but after she comes back, after she stays close to the silver prince. And Gisa take over. She can finally express herself openly and loudly with whatever language she wants and hears it validated and echoed. She feels it heal wounds that she didn’t know she had. They both laugh at the ridiculousness and she cries, for hours, inconsolable in a flood of every uneven experience between her and her sister. Cameron rubs her back and stays with her until she’s calm.
When Cameron is more than tired of waiting for action, her brother a dot on a map that might as well be an ocean away. Gisa, of course, understands having siblings in harm’s way. She understands losing one, having had that pain twice. She doesn’t correct or chastise the anger, the desperation, the almost smothering ache that chokes her friend. Most of all, she doesn’t ask Cameron to be patient, to put herself second, to listen to anyone.
And this is how they cope, together, each other’s first friend. Two girls on the cusp of being grown and making the foolish choice, as we all do, to charge forward as if they are. The separation when Cameron goes to fight is an unreal level of loss, anxiety, and hope. Gisa adds one more name to her lists of prayers and doesn’t apologize for placing her first.

300+ TOP Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers
Spring Boot Interview Questions for freshers experienced :-
1. What is Spring Boot? Earlier, while working with huge enterprise computing softwares, developers had to focus both on the coding part and on the mass amount of configurations. Consequently, this resulted in a problem where developers could not dedicate the needful amount of time to coding. Therefore, Spring Boot came into picture. Spring Boot is an architecture built on top of the conventional spring framework. It allows developers to create deployment ready applications with configurations and linked jar files. Below are the 4 key Spring Boot components: Spring Boot AutoConfigurator Spring Boot Starters Spring Boot Actuator Spring Boot CLI 2. Why do we need Spring Boot? This is one of the most frequently asked Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers that you must be aware about. While Spring framework provides developers with an ideal environment to build large applications, it often involves a number of jar files, configurations, server establishment, dispatcher servlet, component scan, view resolver, and much more, which results as a hindrance to the development. Spring Boot is designed to relieve developers from this rattling problem. It provides with features such as starter projects where developers can find pre built projects for further development, auto configurations, etc., so that the application developers can focus on the conventions. 3. How is Spring Boot architecture? Is it the same as Spring MVC? Although Spring Boot is built as an architecture to Spring framework, it is not the same as Spring MVC, nor is a substitution to the latter one. In simple words, Spring Boot is a mediator that helps a developer to connect, configure, and develop more easily and efficiently with the Spring framework. Some of the auto configuration files provided by Spring Boot are database config, security config, and security config, which saves essential development time. Moreover, there are features such as Spring Boot Starters, which cannot to found in Spring MVC. 4. What is Spring Boot Starters? Moving ahead with the Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers, it is important to know about Spring Boot Starters, which is one of the 4 major components of Spring Boot. To build a single application, there are a lot of dependencies in the Spring framework. Spring Boot Starter POMs are designed to reduce these dependencies into a single one. Therefore, instead of going through a lot of data to find a sample code and copy the dependencies, Spring Boot Starters provides developers with a ready to use all in one set of dependencies. Some of the Spring Boot Starters are Web Starter, Test Starter, Mail Starter, Data JPA Starter. Jar dependencies can be added to Maven’s pom.xml or Gradle’s build.gradle file. org.springframework.boot spring-boot-starter-parent 1.4.0.RELEASE 5. What is Spring Boot AutoConfiguration, and why do we need AutoConfiguration? Spring Boot autoconfigurator is one of the 4 key components of Spring Boot. It uses defined jar dependencies to automatically add configurations to your Spring MVC application. @Configurationpublic class MySQLAutoconfiguration { } Further, a class is registered under org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure. EnableAutoConfiguration key in the location resources/META-INF/spring.factories: This class acts as an auto configuration candidate. org.springframework.boot.autoconfigure. EnableAutoConfiguration=\ com.training.springboot.autoconfiguration. MySQLAutoconfiguration 6. What is Spring Boot CLI? CLI stands for the Command Line Interface. Spring Boot CLI, as the name suggests, is used to begin quickly with the development using the Spring framework. Often, developers have to spend a lot of time after writing boilerplate code, which is nothing but a few lines of code that has to be included time by time with a little bit of modification. Groovy scripts provided by Spring Boot CLI makers sure that app developers can spend time after conventional coding parts and business logic. Such a set up makes sure Spring application is developed and deployed more quickly and efficiently. 7. What is Spring Boot Actuator? Once the application is deployed, Spring Boot Actuator allows you to bring production-ready features to it. Features for monitoring application, traffic patterns, metrics, health, env, and other operation-related insights are provided by the Spring Boot Actuator. It makes use of HTTP endpoints to enable the interaction, which can be extended further in multiple ways same as other components of Spring Boot. org.springframework.boot spring-boot-starter-actuator Note: Regardless of the Spring Boot version, the above setup remains true just as specified in the BOM(Spring Boot Bill of Materials). 8. How to create a Spring Boot Project? While facing Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers, a candidate might be asked to create a simple Spring Boot project, which can be easily accomplished following below guideline or one may create a Spring Boot project following the guidelines provided on https://start.spring.io/ Spring Boot Project

spring boot project Folder Structure:

folder structure The main method is the heart of the Spring boot application to run the application. @SpringBootApplication: The @SpringBootApplication annotation is the same as using @EnableAutoConfiguration, @Configuration, and @ComponentScan with default attributes. @Target(ElementType.TYPE) @Retention(RetentionPolicy.RUNTIME) @Documented @Inherited @SpringBootConfiguration @EnableAutoConfiguration @ComponentScan(excludeFilters = { @Filter(type = FilterType.CUSTOM, classes = TypeExcludeFilter.class), @Filter(type = FilterType.CUSTOM, classes = AutoConfigurationExcludeFilter.class) }) public @interface SpringBootApplication { } 9. What is @Configuration and why is it needed? @Configuration is a Spring annotation that is used to indicate @Bean method declaration by a class. It can be processed by Spring container in order to create service requests and bean definitions during runtime. @Configuration is: Required, only when the annotated class is defined in the @ComponentScan annotation but is not passed explicitly. Not Required, if the annotated class is passed in the source parameters while calling SpringApplication.run(). 10. What is @RestController annotation? @RestController is a specialized controller that includes @ResponseBody and @controller annotations. @RestController is mainly used to simplify the controller implementation. @RestController public class HelloController { @RequestMapping("/hello") public String greeting() { return"HelloWorld"; } }
Spring Boot Interview Questions 11. What is @RequestMapping annotation? It is not unusual to be asked regarding various annotations while facing Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers. However, do not hesitate and give your answer in simple terms using technical information such as below. @RequestMapping is used to map class-level and method-level annotations. It maps class-level annotations with the controller in the requested pattern or path. Further, @RequestMapping specifies mappings to handler methods with method-level annotations. 12. What is @RequestBody annotation? @RequestBody annotation is used to bind a method parameter to incoming HTTP requests with the mentioned URL in @RequestMapping annotation. Here, HTTP message convertors are used to map HttpRequest body to a domain object, which consequently helps to automatically deserialize the body to a Java object based on header present in the request. 13. What is @ResponseBody annotation? The task of @ResponseBody annotations is to inform the controller that the returned object has been serialized into Json, the returned value will be bound to HttpResponse body. Here, Spring HTTP message converters serialize the return value to the type specified in HTTP header. 14. What is @ResponseEntity annotation? @ResponseEntity, as the name suggests, is an annotation that represents the HTTP response entity. @ResponseEntity contains constructors that allow you to specify status code, body, header, and other information. 15. What is @pathVariable? @PathVariable annotation is used to directly extract information from the URI. 16. What is MediaType? MediaType is used to specify the type of data that is to be produced or consumed by the controller. This narrows down and aids with mapping. 17. What is REST API? Restful API is one of the favorite Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers of recruiters to interrogate a fresher candidate. REST API or RESTful API is used to transfer http requests such as Get, Post, Put, and Delete. REST or Representational Transfer is a technology that imitates communication style used for web services. 18. What are the types of HTTP methods and Corresponding RestTemplate methods? GET: Read operations Use: To retrieve the list of customers and use sorting, pagination, and filtering to navigate big lists. Status codes: 200 – (OK) valid request, 404 – (Not Found) Invalid request. POST: Location header with link to /customers/{id} containing new ID Use: To create the newrecord with new id. Status codes: 201 (Created), 404 (Not Found), 409 (Conflict) if resource already exists. PUT: To update/replace every resource in the entire collection. Use: To update/replace data Status codes: 405 (Method Not Allowed), 200 (OK), or 204 (No Content), 404 (Not Found), in case of ID invalid or not found. PATCH: unless you want to modify the collection itself. Use: To update/modify data Status codes: 405 (Method Not Allowed), 200 (OK), or 204 (No Content), 404 (Not Found), in case of ID invalid or not found. DELETE: To completely delete the collection – often not desirable Use: To perform deletion Status codes: 405 (Method Not Allowed), 200 (OK), or 204 (No Content), 404 (Not Found), in case of ID invalid or not found. 19. Difference between POST and PUT methods? Basically, Put is used to replace all the target resources with the selected/requested payload. On the other hand, Post method is used to submit or send data to the specific server or resource such as file upload, information, or changing the current status. An explicitly created object suggest use of the Put method while server-specified name shows the use of Post method. Put allows you to Put objects more than a single time and also allows creation or updation of resources using the exact object or URL. On the other hand, Post allows multiple requests at the same time to make changes to an object or URL. 20. What is @Autowired annotation and its usage? Same as the @Required annotation, @Autowired annotation can be used to bind or autowire bean with the setter method. In other words, one can implicitly define object dependency. It provides developers with control regarding autowiring. 21. How many ways the autowired can mode? No: It’s the default option. Defining not to autowire, which is set using ref attribute. byName: This makes use of property name for autowiring. If bean name matches other bean property name, autowiring is done. byType: Same way as the byName mode, if the bean data type is shown to be compatible with other bean property, autowiring is done. Constructor: byType mode defined in constructor. Autodetect: Finds the default constructor for autowiring. If not found, byType autowiring is performed. 22. What are the limitations of autowiring mode? If constructor contains explicit dependencies, they will override autowiring instructions. Possibilities of Overriding: Dependencies can be easily defined using constructor-arg or property tags to override the autowiring. String, integer, and similar data type properties have to be defined manually and cannot be autowired. 23. What is spring-boot-starter-data-jpa? Spring Boot provides spring-boot-starter-data-jpa, which is one of the Spring Boot Starters, to easily connect relational database with Spring MVC applications. org.springframework.boot spring-boot-starter-data-jpa 24. How does JPA Work? JPA stands for Java Persistence API, which is used as an API that allows the developers to work with objects. When you deal with a relational database, you have to make use of SQL statements in order to retrieve information for certain queries. JPA eliminates the need of using SQL statements and allows the developers to deal with objects without SQL statement requisite. Developers can perform actions such as accessing, modifying, managing, and persisting information. A JPA persistence provider can create a database schema by following the information provided in metadata. Here, JPA metadata has to be defined in the Java class. Metadata can also be defined using XML. JPA can handle both static and dynamic object-based queries. 25. What is the difference between JPA and Hibernate? While JPA and Hibernate both are completely different entities, they are interconnected in certain ways. JPA is an API that provides developers with specifications and guidelines for implementation. However, it is not an implementation and will require a tool that can implement the specifications. Consequently, Hibernate comes into picture, which is nothing but a tool that follows the guideline as well as compulsory and optional specifications defined by JPA and makes it functional. Using Hibernate for JPA implementation also allows you to switch over other implementation tools easily, which is not possible if used Hibernate alone. 26. What is spring-boot-starter-test? Spring-boot-starter-test is the dedicated testing module of the Spring Boot. It brings the Starter Test Modules and a certain number of libraries to test your application. Following is the list of libraries in the Spring-boot-starter-test module: Hamcrest JsonPath JUnit AssertJ Mockito Spring Test & Spring Boot Test JSONassert org.springframework.boot spring-boot-starter-test test 27. How to test the Controller class in Spring Boot? To test the controller class in Spring Boot, developers have the following 2 alternatives: To use the mock environment or To use an embedded Servlet container. 28. What is @RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class)? @RunWith is an annotation used to define if a class should run along a specific runner class. SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class is used as Spring Boot makes use of the Spring test. A developer can choose from multiple of runners based on the test. 29. What is @ContextConfiguration annotation? In order to configure ApplicationContext for tests such as integration, @ContextConfiguration annotation is used. It shows ApplicationContext resource and classes utilized to load it. @ContextConfiguration calls ClassPathContextConfiguration, which helps to identify the Java classes and ContextLoader to run on JVM. Same way, AnnotationConfigContextLoader.class is a ContextLoader used to determine the classes to load. If you are asked to provide an example for @ContextConfiguration during Spring Boot Interview Questions and Answers, use the below code. A simple example for the @ContextConfiguration annotation: @RunWith(SpringJUnit4ClassRunner.class) @ContextConfiguration(classes = Sample.class, loader = AnnotationConfigContextLoader.class) public class JUnitSpringExample {} Class file: @Configuration public class Sample { @Bean public SampleService getSampleService() { return new SampleServiceImpl(); }} 30. What is Swagger2? Swagger is used to describe the structure of APIs. Swagger 2 is an open source service provided in Spring Boot that makes it easier for the machines to identify the structure of APIs such as RESTful Web services. io.springfox springfox-swagger2 2.9.2 31. How to integrate the Swagger2? Below is a sample for integration of Swagger2 with docket: @Configuration @EnableSwagger2 public class SwaggerConfig { @Bean public Docket api() { return new Docket(DocumentationType.SWAGGER_2) .select() .apis(RequestHandlerSelectors.any()) .paths(PathSelectors.any()) .build(); } } @EnableSwagger2 annotation is used to enable Swagger 2. Once Docket bean is specified, select method returns an ApiSelectorBuilder instance. This instance is used to determine how to control the exposed endpoints. RequestHandlerSelectors and PathSelectors are used to configure predicates for of RequestHandler selection. Lastly, any() method will facilitate the documentation using Swagger. Above configuration can be used to integrate Swagger2 with a Spring Boot Application. Spring Boot Questions and Answers Pdf Download Read the full article

TestNG Not For Me: Why I Cannot Recommend TestNG Any More
When I was working with Selenium for the first time, the tool stack I learned with was Java-based. The test runner that my team used at the time was TestNG, and we made pretty liberal use of its functionalities. I also got to know TestNG pretty well. Although I liked Java, I loved TestNG. It was a powerful test framework that was well-suited to building a Selenium-based test harness. While I've worked with different languages and tool stacks since then, my fondness for TestNG remained.
Until now.
During the past few months, I've seen enough issues with Java-based test frameworks to see TestNG (and other libraries) from some different perspectives. And based on these experience, my love for TestNG has faded and I can no longer recommend TestNG as a "default" choice for Java-based test projects. The main reasons come down to characteristics of good test projects and what really matters when writing good test harnesses, Selenium-based or not.
In my experience, the most critical criteria of successful test automation frameworks are the following:
Running all tests in a test harness on a regular basis. This may mean quarantining some tests temporarily and/or deleting tests permanently.
Writing independent and stable tests that can be executed at any time during the development cycle.
Realizing that long-term project maintenance is far more important than short-term test writing.
TestNG, for all of its merits, eventually fails at supporting these three points. While there may be some helpful features that TestNG provides in the short-run, in the long-run there are simply better choices.
TestNG: The Good Parts
Before I write about the downsides of TestNG, I feel like I should mention why I was drawn to it in the first place. One thing that I've become acutely aware of in the past years is that user experience in test automation tooling is critical for both tooling adoption and day-to-day work. If a tool is nice to use and solves real problems, not only am I more likely to use it but it's more likely other people will use it as well. This creates communities and shared knowledge which can move the needle forward in general. Test automation is no exception; being able to write code that can test specific circumstances and solve key problems is important and tooling that help in a neat and tidy way will get some attention.
After working with TestNG for a while, I found it had good developer UX. There were underlying conventions in TestNG that I could get a "feel" for after some experience using it. Although there was a lot of functionality and surprisingly large number of annotations, after a while I could guess what I needed to use and was often correct. If I needed a particular annotation, I could often deduce which one I needed based on experience and logical thinking and voila, the tests would run as expected.
As well, TestNG provided some functionality to - for lack of a better term - paper over some shortcomings that Java had for test automation. For example, Java notoriously does not have default/optional method parameter values, so TestNG implemented this feature. This is extremely helpful for Selenium tests where default browser types or configuration values are commonly used. TestNG also allowed for grouping and organizing tests in sophisticated ways and provided listener functionality to perform particular actions not just on test success or failure but other events too. At the time, these features were vital for writing good test harnesses that did more than evaluate class instances as in unit testing.
Based on this, TestNG should be applauded for solving some gnarly issues in designing good test automation. But even these beautiful features have faded from glory as time went on.
Getting It All Together: Running All Tests Regularly
When I worked with TestNG, one of the draws to using it over JUnit was the ability to organize tests into different groups or suites. On my team we had acceptance test suites for each product, and on the product I worked on this was a subset of all the automated tests that were written. Additionally there were regression suites and some additional suites for more specific functionality for security or specific features. Specifying a new suite was pretty easy since TestNG tests were executed using a specific testng.xml file. In such a file we could include or exclude tests by package, class or test method name and even pass in additional parameters needed per suite. Each test suite was executed using an Ant script on our Jenkins instance. It all worked wonderfully.
Except it didn't.
I realize now that breaking down these tests into such suites was a slippery slope toward instability and extra work for us. Each new test class needed to be carefully added or removed from existing testng.xml files, and the number of Jenkins jobs executing tests became unwieldy. Eventually some suites were run regularly, and others were not run regularly and instead run "on demand" - meaning basically never. This increased complexity in maintaining existing suites and adding new tests to suites.
Test code is production code, and like production code it experiences its own form of rot. In the case of automated tests, the application under test changes and updates, along with the test framework tools and language. In the case of Selenium tests, locators, URLs, application screens, and flows change leading to broken tests. Tests that aren't exercised regularly start to rot, and when they are run it is painful to try to update them to work which in turn lowers and information or value those tests produce for teams. It leads to frustration with the whole test automation enterprise and reduces confidence overall. This is a bad scene.
The problem with TestNG is that it makes it too easy to divide up tests into such suites in the first place. With some foresight, building test suites that are designed to run all tests regularly pays dividends over time in avoiding rotting test code. Regularly can mean whatever works best in a team's context - nightly, hourly, on every pull request, on every commit, on every merge to mainline, or similar. Even dividing up tests in to two or three groups (smoke/regression or smoke/acceptance/regression, for example) can be done with a bit of planning and low overhead. Maven and JUnit are essentially designed from this perspective; find all test classes in the src/test package following a basic naming convention and run them. The TestNG grouping approach leads to suites that are too finely organized, and running tests via testng.xml files can facilitate this issue.
Standing On My Own: Why Writing Independent Tests Is Important
Another problem more applicable to web-based browser testing is designing tests that execute well independently of each other. For many teams, this is no small task. Often with enterprise applications there are limitations in creating and using test data and application instances. A team may have to share a server instance with other teams, such as other QA teams or development teams. Also there may be long or complex workflows that need to be tested that cannot be easily executed concurrently or repeated.
Here again TestNG has some easy solutions that turn out to be terrible.
TestNG allows for tests to depend on other tests or set conditions. For example, TestNG has the @dependsOnMethod annotation where you can specify a method that must execute before a given test method can execute. I've used this as testA must run and succeed before testB can execute. This means I can be assured that any side effects from testA are in place that may affect testB which was helpful working in environments as mentioned above where there were limited application instances to test again or test data was difficult to create. There's also ways to set a priority of tests in TestNG where tests of priority 1 execute first, then tests of priority 2 execute, and so on until all priorities are executed.
These capabilities are great workarounds. But to really succeed, tests should be run independently and in any order without such workarounds. This means arranging for stable test environments dedicated to test automation, managing test data as best you can, using hooks to setup test data without relying on a (G)UI layer by injecting data at the database or API level. And certainly tests should be designed to be executed independently from the start. Again TestNG seemingly provides good tools to solve hard problems but ends up making matters more difficult than needed.
The Little Things: Thinking Long Term
The most important costs for any test automation project are maintenance costs. Writing a test - even a complicated one - often takes much less effort than maintaining that test over time. This is also true of test infrastructure such how a test is run, when a test is run, what happens before and after test runs, and so on. Little things like how a test gets executed can make a big impact.
TestNG typically leans on the testng.xml for selecting tests to run. This is fine or even desirable in an development or IDE setting. Running a set of TestNG tests from Eclipse or IntelliJ is pretty straightforward. Running testng.xml files on a continuous integration (CI) server is slightly more complicated but can also be accomplished but will also look different from running tests locally. Where running testng.xml-based tests are often a right-click-select-Run operation in an IDE, continuous integration services like Jenkins will need something else. This could be an Ant script, using a TestNG-based plugin or some edits to the pom.xml for using Maven. This is true even if there's a single testng.xml with a single suite.
In contrast, executing tests directly using Maven is identical even if using TestNG as your sole test framework in code. Adding the Maven Surefire plugin even allows for running specific tests or subsets of tests both from a development environment and CI environment. It also removes the overhead managing an additional XML file. This may seem like a slight improvement, but over time the lower maintenance costs and unified approach to test execution will pay off.
It's Not You, It's Me
I really don't want to sound like TestNG is terrible (or that Maven is amazing). TestNG is a well-built library and many teams have found success using its functionality. But over time, I find that the downsides outweigh the benefits.
I'll always remember TestNG as a good first step on my journey, but it is no longer the tool I reach for first in my Java toolbox.

The Mavens slightly disappointed by the Raven
By Emory Ying and Josey Gregg
The Raven Grill is a relaxing, casual restaurant great for business meetings and mom’s birthdays. The Raven Grill located in the Museum District serves a variety of foods from seafood to burgers. Founded in 1998 by Rob and Sarah Cromie, the Raven Grill was created as a neighborhood restaurant based off of the poem by Edgar Allan Poe. When we walked into Raven Grill we noticed how the style of the restaurant is more refined reminding us of a country club, especially with all the customers being adults in business casual attire. The walls are green and white with modern art hanging on each wall, seen with dim lighting. There are tables inside able to accommodate large or small groups as well as a beautiful outdoor patio.

The first things to arrive was the complimentary bread and butter. On the plate are two different breads; white bread and cranberry nut bread. Though the bread and butter are well appreciated, they are both served cold, making it hard to spread the butter onto the bread. For appetizers, we ordered Fried Oysters, Fried Calamari and the Raven Sampler. The Fried Oysters are fresh Gulf oysters lightly battered in blue cornmeal and grit, creating a crunchy yet flakey crust around the soft filling and served with remoulade sauce. The Fried Calamari are crispy, accompanied with ancho mayonnaise and house made marinara sauce. The Raven Sampler consisted of hot fried oysters, fluffy onion rings, decent crab cakes, flavorful raven hard tacos full of chicken, cheese, green onions and cilantro and disappointing quesadillas filled with cheese and zucchini.

One of the meals we ordered was a Margherita Grilled Cheese. This is described as fresh mozzarella with roma tomatoes and pesto served on sourdough bread. When the meal came, it looked a lot like someone might expect it would; a sandwich cut up into four slices of toasted bread. In the middle warm pesto is spread adding a slightly salty flavor, while the tomatoes bring a refreshing flavor that stands out through the cheese. The only problem we noticed was on some of the pieces the cheese was not completely melted which was more than a little disappointing. Served alongside the grilled cheese the french fries were served hot and slightly crispy with the large portion proving a good partner to the grilled cheese.

Another main meal ordered was Beef Tenderloin. On the menu it is described as, “tender 8oz. bacon-wrapped filet topped with herb butter served with garlic mashed potatoes and grilled vegetables.” The dish was one of the first to arrive out of our whole group which was surprising. The filet has black grill lines over the surface with burnt bacon surrounding the edges. The filet looked and tasted delectable; tender and juicy on the inside combined with the crunchy texture and charred taste from the outside complimented each other marvelously. The mashed potatoes are filled with potatoe skins, potato chunks, cilantro and green onions. Although they are tasty, they aren't a standout side dish. The grilled vegetables consists of zucchini, tomato and a small corn on the cob. The tomato didn't look appetizing so instead I tried the corn which tastes juicy and sweet with a hint of charred aftertaste as well as the zucchini which also has a charred taste to it.

A downside to our experience was the lack of good service we faced at a few points during our lunch. Most of the time our water and drinks were filled quickly, but in the case of bringing out the food this was a little different. The food was all brought out at different times leaving many of us confused. At the end of our meal we found out this was because of a system crash during our dining which caused confusion to the kitchen in cooking our meal. After this had been explained it made more sense to us and we were grateful for the small discount of $20 that was given due to the inconvenience.
Overall this was a mediocre experience. The food quality was decent but by no means outstanding, while the service turned out to exceed expectations. We recommend this restaurant if you're in the mood for a calm meal, with a business associate or friends.
Stars - 3/5
Price - $$$
Wheelchair Access - Yes
Recommended Dishes and Drinks - Beef Tenderloin, Chicken enchiladas, Pot Roast
Food - Depending on the meal the food was very good, or decent.
Overall - Overall Raven Grill is a pleasant place to have a calm meal with a business associate or enjoy some time with your family.
