The U.S. State Department approved a potential sale of 24 C-130J Super Hercules transport aircraft to Australia for an estimated cost of $6.35 billion.

U.S. approval comes just two days after the Australian Ministry of Defense announced its decision to replace and extend its average air mobility fleet of 12 C-130J Hercules aircraft with an unspecified number of new C-130J-30 fuselages as part of the phase of the AIR 7404 Phase 1 Project.

According to the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), Australia requested the purchase of 24 C-130J-30 aircraft, in addition to radars, friendly or enemy identification transponders (IFF), missile alert systems, embedded global positioning system/inertial navigation systems, radio frequency countermeasures systems, Guardian laser transmitter sets for infrared countermeasures of large aircraft and tactical radio

“This proposed sale will support foreign policy and the national security objectives of the United States. Australia is one of our most important allies in the Western Pacific. The strategic location of this political and economic power contributes significantly to ensuring peace and economic stability in the region," said the DSCA.

The Australian Ministry of Defense said it approached several aircraft manufacturers as part of its project to revitalize the average air mobility fleet. He added that the acquisition of new C-130J aircraft represented the only option that met all Australia's capacity requirements.

The C-130J will be the only option that the Ministry of Defense will advance for government approval in 2023.

The C-130J-30 that Australia plans to buy is an extended version of the C-130J. Adds 3 meters to the fuselage, increasing the useful space (plus two pallets of equipment) in the cargo compartment. It has a maximum permissible payload of 44,000 pounds (19,958 kg) and a range of 4,425 kilometers with 40,000 pounds of payload.
