Saskatoon – Die Stadt mit dem wohl coolsten Namen der Welt

Hello Headbangers and other Friends!

Wir machen einfach mal genau da weiter, wo wir im letzten Post aufgehört hatten. Um ca. 22 Uhr überquerten wir noch die Grenze nach Saskatchewan. Wir erkannten nicht mehr viel, allerdings sahen wir einige Teiche neben der Straße, die uns gerade zu der Zeit eine wunderschöne Fotokulisse boten:

Wir erreichten noch in derselben Nacht vom 12.06. den guten alten Walmart Parkplatz der Kleinstadt Yorkton in Saskatchewan.

Dort entdeckten wir morgens dieses wunderschöne Kennzeichen. xD Das würde in Deutschland nicht gehen, haha.

Jedenfalls sieht ein normales Kennzeichen so aus:

Hier können wir euch endlich mal eine Kleinigkeit zeigen, die uns mit der Zeit in Kanada aufgefallen ist. Hier gehen die Leute wirklich sehr, sehr schlecht mit den Einkaufswägen um. Oftmals werden sie einfach entweder im Nirgendwo stehengelassen, oder von weitem einfach in die Sammelstelle mit Karacho gerollt. Zumindest ist das bei Walmart so, wo man im Übrigen keine 25 Cent Münze einwerfen muss, um an einen Einkaufswagen zu kommen. Irgendeiner wird’s ja schon wegräumen…

Hier könnt ihr außerdem eine ebenfalls typische Sache für den mittleren Westen Kanadas sehen: 

Wie in Skandinavien werden hier die Autos oft im Winter an den Strom angeschlossen, um den Motorblock zu heizen. Das Auto muss ja auch irgendwie anspringen bei -40 Grad. :D

Nun ja, jedenfalls ging es dann relativ schnell weiter in Richtung Saskatoon, dem „Herz“ von Saskatchewan.

Direkt nach dem losfahren fiel uns schon die typische Prärielandschaft auf. Natürlich gibt es viele Streckenabschnitte, in denen es wie im Film ist. Man fährt also stundenlang durch ein und dieselbe Landschaft. Aber auch Saskatchewan ist nicht nur Prärie. Es wird ebenfalls von Wäldern, schönen hügeligen Graslandschaften usw. durchzogen und ist durchaus abwechslungsreich. Man muss sich vorstellen, dass Deutschland selbst in die Mini-Provinz Saskatchewan schon 3 Mal reinpasst! Bei uns kam auf jeden Fall keine grooooße Langeweile auf. Das ist genau das Gleiche mit Ontario und seinen gigantisch großen Wäldern. Nur hier eben mit Prärie :D

Auf halber Strecke sahen wir unser erstes größeres Tier in Saskatchewan! Einen Kojoten! Dieses Mal schafften wir es auch, ein Foto zu machen. :)

Nach Saskatchewan und in die anderen umliegenden Provinzen sind in der Vergangenheit sehr viele Menschen aus der Ukraine ausgewandert. Gerade bei dieser verlassenen Kirche fällt es einem leicht das zu glauben (trve kvlt!)

Gegen 3 Uhr nachmittags kamen wir in Saskatoon an.

Saskatoon – Nichts zu tun – Aber weit gefehlt, sagen wir.

Zuallererst ging es mal wieder auf „Duschsuche“. Wir fuhren also zum Lakewood CIvic Center. Dort gibt es nicht nur ein Schwimmbad, sondern auch ein Gym, Sauna, Bücherei usw. Es ist also eher eine Art Gemeinschaftszentrum. Zu dem Zeitpunkt war leider keine öffentliche Schwimmzeit. Wir fragten allerdings trotzdem freundlich nach einer Dusche. Die Frau an der Rezeption war mehr als freundlich! Wir unterhielten uns eine ganze Weile und sie verstand unsere missliche Lage sehr gut. Im Endeffekt hat sie uns völlig gratis duschen lassen, obwohl man normalerweise den vollen Eintrittspreis zahlen muss. Total nett!

In der nähe des Schwimmbads sahen wir diese Baustelle. Hier sieht man nochmals wie die Häuser in Kanada gebaut werden... aus solidem OSB xD

Wir hatten danach nur diesen einen Nachmittag Zeit, denken aber auch, dass die Zeit ausgereicht hat um sich einen groben Einblick von Saskatoon zu machen. Wir parkten in direkter Nähe zum Fluss und der Universität.

Nahe der Universität sahen wir dieses süße Erdhörnchen! :D

Der große South Saskatchewan River schlängelt sich direkt durch die Stadt, oder besser die Stadt um den Fluss. :D

Direkt neben dem Fluss gibt es sogar einen Wanderweg, bei dem man sich wie im Dschungel fühlt. :D Den Meewasin Trail:

Wenn man sich Downtown so anguckt, kommt einem Saskatoon wirklich nicht als kleine Präriestadt vor:

Na, erinnert euch das Delta Bessborough Hotel in der Innenstadt nicht auch an das große Hotel in Québec Stadt?

Vom Trail aus erspähten wir am Flussufer sogar einen Biber! Leider schwamm er zu schnell davon, um ein Foto zu machen. Wir hätten nicht gedacht einen Biber in solch einem großen Fluss anzutreffen :)

Über die Broadway Bridge ging es dann hinüber nach Downtown:

Der Kiwanis Memorial Park in unmittelbarer Nähe des Hotels ist wirklich sehr hübsch anzusehen. 

Dort fanden wir auch Meister Lampe! Der war wirklich unglaublich riesig! Außerdem nicht aus der Ruhe zu bringen der kleine Große.

Generell kam es uns so vor, als hätte Saskatoon sehr viele Parks inmitten der Stadt.

An einer Häuserwand direkt an einem indigenen Forschungsinstitut fanden wir dieses eindrucksvolle Gemälde.

Gerade wenn man in der Innenstadt angekommen ist, bekommt man ein Gefühl dafür, wie groß diese Stadt eigentlich ist. Im Osten und auf vielen Foren hieß es oft nur: „Fahrt an Saskatoon vorbei, da gibt’s eh nichts…“. Das haben wir wirklich gar nicht so empfunden. Es war lediglich so leer, weil es unter der Woche und schon recht spät am Abend war.

In diesem Alkoholgeschäft namens Silver’s Market, fragten wir die junge Inhaberin nach Aktivitäten, die sie uns noch empfehlen würde. Irgendwie kamen wir mit ihr (Camille) ins Gespräch und kauften im Endeffekt noch ein sehr gutes Craft-IPA in ihrem Laden. Sie ließ Roma mehrere Biere probieren und traf genau seinen Geschmack! Ein wirklich sehr cooler Laden, der von ihr und ihrem Freund geführt wird. Falls ihr also einmal durch Saskatoon kommt, nehmt euch dort unbedingt ein Bier mit. Für Roma waren die Biere aus Saskatchewan neben denen aus Québec bisher die besten!

Noch einmal ging es durch den Kiwanis Memorial Park entlang des Flusses auf einen letzten abendlichen Spaziergang:

Gerade bei Sonnenuntergang wirkt die Stadt gleich noch einmal schöner!

Wir fuhren im Anschluss auf einen anderen Walmart Parkplatz der weiter im Westen lag und machten dort Abendessen. Ein gutes Bier aus Camille’s Bierladen durfte da nicht fehlen. :D

Somit ging ein wunderschöner Tag in Saskatoon zu Ende.

Turkey Vulture After making notes about the Hooded Merganser, we continued north along the trail and made a brief stop at my folks place and spoke with my mom. Carrying on from there We took a slightly different path back to the Meewasin trail, checking out the newer sections of park pathways through River Heights. From there, up on the high bank, we spotted a pair of Turkey Vultures soaring over the river! For a moment I doubted what I was seeing, but getting out the binoculars I was able to make out a little pink head… and then a Pelican flew by and it was clear how huge they were. A few days later I spotted another just south of town. One flew right over my head - and not very high up!

One of my favourite places to walk the dogs is in the Silverspring grasslands. Birds, deer, a coyote, and the 10,000 years of natural history under your feet. Every neighbourhood in Saskatoon has a special feature like this. Goldfinch

Many (MANY) years ago, Amanda and I lived on and acreage Southeast of Saskatoon. We had lots of bird feeders - including a few Nyjer Thistle seed feeders, and all summer long it seemed like there were constantly goldfinches all over those feeders. They were a bright flurry of yellow that you couldn't miss against an otherwise green and/or brown backdrop.

Since moving back to town, I feel like I hardly ever see Goldfinches. My parents would get a few in their back yard - in a house they lived in a decade ago (it was much closer to the river, and to the edge of town). So far only House Finches come to our Nyjer Thistle (which are lovely as well!).

I've seen flashes of yellow in the bushes along the Meewasin Trail, but they never stick around long enough to get a proper look. Never sure if they are goldfinches or yellow warblers or something else.

The other day I definitely saw GOLDFINCHES! TWO of them! Still wasn't able to get a good picture of them! but I saw them!

I think this is the 75th bird I've added to the Birbs of Saskatchetoon Sketchbook this year!
