Do you have any thoughts on Diriliş Ertugrul/Kuruluş Osman? And is it true that other shows like Uyaniş Büyük Selçuklu or Destan are similar to it? Because I haven't seen any of them, they just give out a similar vibe. As if there was this bandwagon on turkish "patriotic" period dramas set in pre-Ottoman past (although Mehmet Bir Cihan Fatihi, may it rest in peace, did leave me with similar impression) with very black-and-white morality and whitewashing of ancient Turks...?

Yes, you summarized them well. I haven’t watched any of them - I won’t watch any of them - but they are basically considered political/patriotic propaganda. Their viewership in Turkey is typically considered to be composed of people of a certain political view (I don’t know how true that is - there are certainly fans on places like Twitter who don’t care for their politics but like the actors etc.), and people who are not of that political view typically have a really low opinion on those shows, and I will leave it at that.

You have also hit the nail on the head by saying that Barbarossa was a Diriliş character who somehow made it in to MC lol.

The one I feel the saddest about is Destan, and that one seems to be less of a straightforward propaganda than the others. I would like a good adventure show about Ancient Turks with a female lead - but the channel it airs on does not give me any hope regarding its quality so I won’t give it a chance.

When the tv series;Fatih starts ? do you know smth about promo photos, costumes ect?

the official announcement was that the show starts airing on january, but the production had to shoot again the first episode and made a few changes because the previous director left the project, so i don’t think it will start by then.

there’s a twitter account that you can follow, who posts news from the production/cast. The lastest rumor is that we may get a teaser trailer this week *fingers crossed*

Minette finally watched Rise Of Empires: Ottoman

- Historical accuracy was mostly there, but some of the errors here should NOT be present in a documentary, even docudrama (like Mehmet hating being deposed - like WTF, he was thirteen and knew he was not up to the task, hence “if you are the sultan, come command your armies, if I am the sultan, I order you to come and command your armies”).

- Character work was... Not there, to say the least. Like I get that Mehmet II. was a gifted child, but he surely wasn’t acting like a 20-year old at the age of what, 13?! None of the characters were super complex or interesting, with the possible exception of Anna and Giustiniani, and even then Anna’s story had no actual ending and Giustiniani had that stupid romance subplot with that noblewoman.

- Acting wasn’t very good, again especially from Mehmet’s actor, which is hillarious since he had to often act opposite Selim Bayraktar, who is actually good.

- All the accents were also distracting as fuck, I don’t know why but Tuba’s bothered the most for some reason.

- On the other hand, the military aspect wasn’t half bad and I actually learned something, so that’s nice.

- Costumes and special effects were pretty good, although some of them were clearly repurposed from Magnificent Century, especially janissary uniforms, which was HILLARIOUS.

- Equally hillarious was Sümbül with a beard, although that’s kind of given considering the actor IRL is pretty much the opposite of Sümbül, like even in his advanced age he is JACKED. You also see the lady who played Ayşe Haseki Sultan crying over having her child taken away, that wasn’t very funny.

- Charles Dance provided the narration, and needless to say it was the best part of the show period.

- Overall 6/10, better than Mehmed Bir Cihan Fatihi, if only because they did justice to Constantine XI and didn’t make Mehmet II look forty. Would recommend if you are really desperate for some Ottoman period drama, but don’t expect anything spectacular.
