Full headcanon:

Despite their nature as beyond our plane of comprehension, the Great Ones enjoy human music.

Mergo obviously loves his music box lullaby, as does his Wet Nurse. If Ebrietas had ascended, she would be fond of piano pieces like etudes or concertos, but instead weaves her own mournful melody. Kos enjoyed the working songs of the Fishing Hamlet. The Moon Presence adores the Doll's rare lullaby. If the Brain of Mensis is capable of hearing, it would be fond of string ensembles or solo violin pieces. The Amygdala are attached to different types of music depending on where they lurk, but are generally open to anything. And Oedon loves the human voice, strong vocal solos and opera.

In a kinder world, the Orphan of Kos would have been born and raised surrounded by their mother's voice, echoing the Hamlet's songs of old or an unknowable lullaby born from Kos' own nature...

So, lemme get this straight:

The 'brain' of the Nightmare was the Brain of Mensis, who belonged to 'Mensis', thus making it originally their Nightmare.

However, after it connected with Mergo (said to be the child of Queen Yharnam and Oeden, another Great One [a deity] like Mensis), it stillbirthed their brains.

Next, we had Micolash, the Host. Personally, I believe him to be the 'lungs' of the Nightmare, allowing it to be sustained.

After he was killed, it's why the Nightmare didn't collapse yet, as he is not the 'source'.

Next, we enter the part of the Nightmare belonging to Mergo, the Loft.

At the top, one fights Mergo's Wet Nurse, the 'ribcage'. The last line of defense, and perhaps also the 'blood' of the Nightmare.

Finally, after she is killed, Mergo, the 'heart', dies, allowing the Nightmare to end.

At least until you discover the Fishing Hamlet in the DLC.

So, am I mostly right?

Thinking about the Yharnam stone you get from killing Queen Yharnam is essentially a Stone Baby, or lithopedion. Really rare in real life, but it can happen when a fetus too large for the woman's body to reabsorb dies. To protect the woman from infection from the dead tissue, the body calcifies it and can remain undetected for years.

After defeating Queen Yharnam you go around carrying the corpse of Mergo as a trophy it seems like.
